I thought my 9550 was good but damn these chips are awesome! Loaded vcore is 1.200, bios setting 1.20625 for 4ghz. :) Now its time to see what it can really do.

I was already running a Q6700, so I had the board dialed in even before I got the Q9650. I always test at different FSB speed intervals I feel are important (just drop the multi to 6x and test the FSB to its limits).
But yeah, there is a difference between a dual core and a quad, mainly voltages. The NB voltage (MCH for Gigabyte) is higher for a quad then a dual core. For example, on my previous ASUS P5E, I could run a 515 FSB with 1.43v NB. But with a quad, I could only run a 423 FSB with 1.45v NB.
With the UD3P, I've seen 500+ FSB with quads, but it takes 1.5v MCH. The default is 1.10v for 400 FSB, so you can see just how much that is. Yet the board can push 671 FSB with a dual core.
EOD thanks. HOSS331,great job, very low volts for 4ghz
Nice clockin' Hoss331, I can't wait to test mine out.
oh ya your going to like it :yepp:
thanks
whoopi! its here.batch #L826A965.looks like i got your twin here EOD.
I've just started testing mine. 1.1875 VID. started with 3.6 (only needs 1.20 vcore for stability with orthos). It may even go lower, I'm testing it in stages.
Well I had to make some changes to get it prime stable past 6 hours. To be stable at 4.25GHz I had to up the vcore to 1.368 which show an actual reading of 1.353. With this the idle temps were 38C and the prime load temps were 63C.
So far so good, 4.1 with 1.2312 bios. Im going to try for some 4.4 clocks next week, just breaking it in for now. :)
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p...mapImage2c.jpg
man, now these are so cheap I really want a new one. when seeing people like the guy above hit 4.1 ghz with less than my VID alone.. that sucks. lol I needed 1.25 to load at 3.0 Ghz.. sadness.
Still a great chip, but I want another.
So would my chip possibly reach higher overclocks with the same volts I'm using with other motherboards, some need lower volts than others to reach the same clocks right? or no, is that all how the CPU needs it.
Yea, these chips are finally cheap enough to warrant an upgrade from an Q6600. I wonder how many people are hitting over 4.0 with a Maximus?
You have a great chip Robilar! I started with my goal of 4.2Ghz and got that stable. Then today I decided to see what 4.0GHz would take. It took just +0.006v over vid:
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...GHz1256v_2.jpg
I have a Q6600 running at 3200 on a Abit P35. Would it be possible to get to to 4K with the Q9650 with a mild voltage bump with the P35 board? I know this looks like it would be possible with the P45 but if upgrade boards probably going to wait for a P55 and a i7 chip.
Looks like some great results so far....
yes, im running @4.0 right now on a MSI p35 NEO2 FR. This is a rev.1 board with bad VoltageReg (mucho vdroop). I think this is a 4 phase board.
P35 is still a respectable o/c board. Sure its no P45; but still...
I am really loving this chip
Btw.. on this motherboard with the crappy vReg. I had to run 1.6vCPU (bios) just to get my 6600 (1.325 vid) to run @3.6Ghz
With my 9650 it takes 1.28Vcpu to run @4.0 Ghz
my settings for the Nb were the same with the 6600 vs 9650 on this board. Only difference is the Vcore
Vtt 1.3 nb 1.45 sbio 1.8 sbcore 1.05
maybe i can lower them, but I haven't tried yet
9650 installed. quick run at stock to check and see if cpu is ok and to see how warm it runs.vid is 1.25.http://i43.tinypic.com/2wch9x0.jpg heres the first OC. still priming so far so good.pretty happy with temps so far.i will keep you guy posted. http://i41.tinypic.com/15nku13.jpg
Well 3825 MHz seems to be my cieling with this Zalman 9700 cooler :(
I have repeatedly with dozens of tweaks attempted 4GHz and just cant get windows to fully boot, I've come close getting past the password screen but it freezes shortly after loging in..
I have a vid of 1.16
Currently have stable occt 1 hr @ 1.175 425x9 = 3825MHz
I had to put a fan on my NB as it was pushing 50'c + now idling @43'c
I mainly played with the voltage and FSB i tried increasing my NB v but no effect there?
One thing that is bothering me is the load time to boot, my previous 6600 on gigabyte gax38DQ6 seemed much faster I count the times the bar rolls across the screen before the password prompt and it used to be 4-5 rolls across now It takes 10?? My benches are rocking @ just under 23,000 on 3dm'06 up from 18000 w/ the 6600 @ 3.4ghz I just cant seem to hit that 4ghz marker :( Any suggestions would be very welcome, heres my voltages
Asus Formula Maximus

Any help greatly appreciated
:shakes:
Vcore 1.16v to low set 1.25-1275v more maybe needed for 4ghz
cpu pll 1.632 set to 1.50- 1.54 in bios
NB v 1.632 to high try below 1.50
Dram 2.32 to high try lower <2.20
FSB term 1.344 ok for 4ghz
What to do about the abnormally high core temp? One core is 10c higher than the rest. Just ignore it?
Rest of the cores look great. I really dont think that one core is really 10c higher.
Thanks for these #'s but.... Still no go wouldn't even post 9 out of 10 times
Changed vcore incrementally from 1.25 up to 1.35
pll from 1.47 upto 1.54
NB from 1.48- 1.54v
Dram -2.18v
???
Any other ideas?
1.175v boots right up to 3.8 ghz ?
I know with a vid this Low stock it has to be able to hit 4 ghz.. I havent tried voltages over 1.4v so that might be the ticket just don't wanna fry the chip :) It might go though ?
:shakes:
Edit**
1 other item noticed, I was reading somewhere that it might be vista and that reinstalling a fresh copy might solve the problem?? Any possibility of this being true?
what is your vFSB/vtt at viccan?
well to actually run vista its @ 1.39v
ive tried uppin it to as high as 1.46v
Funny thing is even when i up my vcore to 1.206 which gets me to 3870mhz
My vcore in cpu-z as well as 3 other prgs. report it as 1.17 still?? should I kill the loadline cal and see if that helps??? I am completely stumped
Funnier is vista doesnt show the oc in the sys properties my q6600 always showed the stock then oc'd value??
vic:shrug:
so far so good. its a little scary as to the volts required to get 500fsb.but im on my way.http://i43.tinypic.com/2n7hb3q.jpg
thanks grn, heres my latest.im almost at my goal of 8x500@4.0ghz.but i wanted to run my ram at 5:6,for ddr 1200 pl8 but so far only able to run 1:1.so im 1/2 the way there.not liking the high volts though, any suggestions? could really use some help here.thanks.also i am very impressed with this proccessor.i had no idea there would be so much improvement in all aspects of its duties(yes i said doodies).i mean installing vista was fast, and everything loads so fast its ridiculous.it almost scared me when i clicked the opera browser button how fast it was up on the screen in front of me,its likeBAM there it is.http://i42.tinypic.com/2079sm8.jpg
just flashed to Rampage formula seems prettier but no beter luck?? This setting has to be there I got it to boot into safe mode @ 3.93 but thats the end of my success thus far couldn't do that on the old bios so this must have helped in some way??? HELP 1.12 vid its gotta go!!!
i dont believe it I set everything to normal except vcore (1.27v) and it booted seemed slow to boot and got an ugly smear accross screen at password prom,t but its up for once thankyou RAMPAGE!!
Temps seem high 39 39 38 38 idle ?? gonna play a bit see what come of it any pointers still greatly appreciated

nice one mcoffey! well ive finally got it stable at 500x8 half of my goal met,now to get the ram running 5:6 ddr 1200.http://i43.tinypic.com/2a856s3.jpg
whats your vid on this 9650? real temp tells me min= 1.0375 max= 1.1625
Ive currently got it at 1.28 and temps are somewhat high 39 39 40 41
had to over clock my NB to 1.73 just to get stable thus far i really need to get it down anyways any settings you might have would be appreciated i cant get over 4 ghz yet but i know its there just patience ....
Currently priming my new q9650 @ 3.9ghz at only 1.280v on air.(I'm using a maximus 2 formula)
This is definitely the best cpu I've ever owned.
viccan,my vid is 1.25 so it runs cooler than the lower vid chips, but i need more vcore.my temps are low also because i use an airconditioner.what are your ambient temps?cause if thier in the 65c-70c area, your cpu temps would be about right i think.im not familiar with your board so i cant really give you too much advice on settings.all my settings(main ones) are in the ss i posted. sorry i couldnt help much
My room temp is about 60' F heres a snap of the big pic..
http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/6...reengn6.th.jpg
Radaja, your temps do look a little weird and I dont think thats vid related. Do you have the AC pointed directly at your cpu? EOD has your same vid, batch and under water his temps are showing the same as yours but with .1 less volts. Either way good job so far on the 500.
hoss331, read post 934 i state clearly that i use an airconditioner.i have a dryer vent hose that blows very cold air directly into the intake of my computer.
Unless your chip is at the limit which is doubtful with such a low VID, sounds like your board is at the limit. Why don't you and remove 2 sticks of ram and see how far you can clock on just 2 x 2GB?
@Radaja - looking good so far. Ud3P is pretty good with quads, 500 FSB & 600 ram should be manageable on reasonable volts.
I agree for you viccan, take 2 sticks of ram out and try some more :yepp:
also viccan, if you get some better cooling like a Tuniq Tower, or the TRUE.. you'll be better off with temps.
My Q9650 at 4.0 and at 4.2 Ghz gives Idle temps around 30-35 depending on room temps, in the mornings it idles around 29c. thats with a TRUE cooler. get a new cooler over that 9700
I think I've found my 24/7 speed

I ran Intelburntest twice in a row and it passed both times, then I immediately ran occt 1hr and it passed. I also ran p95 for a little over an hour with no problems but stopped it because I don't like long stability tests. 3dmark06 and am3 were run twice as well.
Based on all this, it isn't necessary to run p95 for 24 straight hours right? My rig's in my bedroom and I wouldn't be able to sleep with the noise lol.
Ya, basically people say that OCCT for 1hr is like 10 hours of Prime95.
if you've passed OCCT, and IBT I think you're fine.. but common, you only have like 80mhz to go.. I KNOW you can get to 4.0 Ghz for your daily runs.
Thanks, I'll keep pushing
Getting closer to where I want to be, and it doent look like 4.4 will be much of a problem on air.

ok, ive hit a wall here with my9650.i can only get 500x8 with mem 1:1. when i try to get them running 5:6 no go.does any one have a solid, stable template for 500x8 for the 9650?some thing i can build upon.most of the OC's posted with the 9650 are all 8.5x500 or 9x500,just a little to high for me at this stage.i have had some success but also ive been through three installs(corrupt).dont get me wrong im not asking an easy OC,but it would be nice to be able to see some others that are simular to my goals, voltage wise.the one for 500x9 are just to different for what im trying.thanks
This is my setting for the E8400 (Stable)
I will be getting the Q9650 soon
I would like to know if I can use the same setting or where to modify

I'll keep trying its bound to happen sooner or later I need a new heat sink anyone got a tuniq for sale, I've got 100% perfect ebay feedback and even baught products from members here but i need 100 posts to shop in the proper forum.. Bummer huh.. oh well thanks for all the help guys
I need a new heat sink / water kit you guys suck hittin walls at 500*8 thats nutz im stuck @ 3.9GHz its gotta be this zalman 9700 holdin me back Tuniq looks like the way
to go.. Or should I just hold off another couple weeks and go water ? Man choices choices choicews? BUY BUY BUY!! <---( I keep puttin that in my posts to save sony and the economy :)
dont get a tuniq..... they are old and lots of other coolers outperform it. get a Scythe Mugen2 or a Xigmatek 1284....
heres where im at now, still trying to work my way up there.http://i41.tinypic.com/20sg80o.jpg

Anybody have Q9650 Batch L824B301?
Any good?
quick question about prime 95 and a quad core. is it normal when it finishes a test to go core 2,core 3,core 1,core 4.then after an hour or so its core2,core3,core4,core1.also why does it seem to be so far behind the actual time.for instance by the time the seventh test the actual time has been a little over 14 minutes?i did notice that when running 5:6 it seem to keep up with the time but 1:1 runs twice as slow.am i just being too picky here or is this a sign of clocks and volts not running in harmony?
Well guys the misteriuos things of hardware...For some reason I'm more stable on 8,5 multi at more FSB with less vcore than on 9 multi with less FSB and more vcore...

Edit: I got stuck temps at 32/32/37/37
Nice clocks here guys.. I was able to Load and do some benchies at 4.275 Ghz.. with 1.34v in CPU-Z and 1.378 in BIOS. So I'm doing ok, still trying to decide what should be my 24/7 I've been running 4.0 for a while now, but I can do better with same temps.
I'm going water-cooling next week. so after I get that all setup, I think I might go for 4.3 Ghz 24/7 but that needs over 1.38v to be stable.. I'm ok to run this thing at 24/7 under water at 1.39v BIOS, and 1.45 VTT right?
Also Zucker, how are you liking that CM HAF, I'm seriously considering getting that case, it's sweet, and the big brother to my CM 690. Not to mention that it's Great for water, can fit dual 320 rad's in there. I have a PA 120.2 coming Monday. so maybe I'll get the HAF for all my new toys. :)
Thanks for the advice, I check ed out quite a few Blocks and the Xigmatek 1284 came out shinning in a few different reviews and for the price There was no beating it.. So hopefully here by Friday... And we'll try from there.. Odd thing my temps with this Zalman 9700 are reporting pretty low 30-30-31-32 iDLE depending on my vcore the highest was like 60-61-59-59 @ 1.25v...440 fsb
The other thing making me twitch is my CPU PLL its hovering at 1.63 and I havent been able to get it lower? even when I set it to 1.5 in my bios its up to 1.63 when I check the hardware monitor in the Bios??? Odd and i was reading somewhere that that high a PLL is a cpu killer??? how can I get it lower?:banana::banana::banana: even setting to auto in bios its still the same any ideas??:shakes:
I had seen somewhere on another forum that you should run the cpu gtl at .67 for quad cores but I can see that some of you are not running this setting. What would be the best cpu gtl run with this cpu on an X48 mobo?
I was using .63 on ASUS P5E3 X48 before and now +70mV
On another note what are peoples thoughts about 'running in' a new processor???
What do you guys do with new chips? Do people increase volts to the chip incrementally or go straight for 4Ghz+? Personally I don't think it makes much difference but my brother just got his one...and errr :)
Finally rock stable:
http://img147.imageshack.us/img147/7703/primetb5.th.jpg
Check out the vcore :D
Normally I have to raise the cpu gtls as I raise vvt. I start at .635 then usually have to raise it .005 for each .02 increase in vtt.
Great work there Celcius, all that work finally paid off! As you mention your VCORE is especially impressive to say the least! With that said could/would you post your other voltages (just the main ones, VTT, PLL, NB, SB, and GTL's)? Thanks man and great work!
radaja - I've also got the same exact chip (well same stepping anyway) with the same VID however I've yet to push mine past 3.6Ghz. However I've got all day off tomorrow and I'm hoping to start pushing this thing a bit, can't wait!
Zucker2K - I see you mention your temps are stuck, just to be clear your temps don't change at all despite load (I ask because one of my cores is stuck). My CORE3 temps don't go below 38C no matter what, however as the loads rise the temp will go above 38C, just never below. Even though its not a bit deal it annoyes me big time (it must really stink to have all 4 cores stuck)!
roger D25,awesome! i wish i had the day off.ive been working way too much overtime this week, so i havent been able to do any more OCing on my new 9650.its been real hard..cant wait till the weekend.keep us posted on your OC's.
Its tough to read this thread each night about how well everyones Q9650's are clocking but not being able to work on your own system (although I'm very greatful to have a job at all)! I will definately try to post my results ASAP as long as I'm able to get some decent results that is, lol! Keep pushing it guys!
The UD3P takes a little time to get the hand but then you will see the amazing results. Some boards are very different then others that's why some templates will be hit and miss. My Rev 1.1 template won't work on my Rev 1.0 board.
You'll get there Roger, this is by far one of the best cpu's I had! Loads of fun breaking records, air priming etc. But job comes first these days
yes im also very happy to be working so i can buy all this fun computer stuff, im just happy that i got this cpu, only problem is ive had it for 1 week now but only got to mess around with for two days.but like i said weekend is upon us,let the good times roll.

Stable for more than 1 hour now
All Temps are looking good with H2O, around 35-40c
Seems like I have to pump alot more volts into the cpu and nb in order to get over 4ghz with this board and chip, scared to pump more, am I at a limit with this board?
Right now this looks to be the highest I am able to go stably with this board. It doesnt matter what settings I change or how much more voltage I give it, it will not pass anything higher. Ive been playing with this for a coupe days now and it always fails after the 2nd test or the 4th test on p95 8k. So I guess Ill give the UD3P at try and maybe some ddr3 ram this time. Any suggestions on some good clocking ddr3 ram?

i'm also having trouble reaching 500fsb. right now i'm at 490 and i can't get the last few mhz in. i suspect that it's my memory not letting me go higher, but is there any way i can find out for sure? i'm using crucial ballistixs (yeah i know, it's crucial :( ) and it won't boot at 5-5-5-18 so i loosened the timing to 6-6-6-20. i'll post a template for all my settings later.
most of the time, the unstability shows when the whole computer freezes instead of certain cores failing when priming. is this memory problem is do i need to tune something else?
These chips can boot into windows at very low volts, but keeping them stable is the problem.
9x 500FSB with 8GB RAM:
zucker2k,what kind of volts were required for 500fsb on the x48?and also is it stable or did it just boot into windows?i only ask cause you mentioned being able to boot into windows with low volts.NEVERMIND about the stable stuff you just posted while i was writing this.
thats always the challenge with the asus boards ain't it? :D
my personal experience between asus and DFI is that the DFI clocks to stable pretty easy if you know what to do, but the asus clocks past stable and comes back down. I am not sure what it is about the boards, but multiple cases have been like this for me.
either way you have a killer chip on that board
It is a feat to boot 500 fsb but unfortunately you can't blend Prime95 in none of those speeds on X48 setup. I bet is hard for you to Prime95 with 4200Mhz. They are unstable they can't handle the load.
But if you can 3D with it and use your day to day softwares thats fine.
got an early start on the weekend.busted one out on my lunch break.more to come.http://i42.tinypic.com/kaif10.jpg
I still don't understand what you're saying; are you saying I can't prime95 500 FSB or that I can't prime95 above 4.2Ghz? I've done all those, and with even 8GBs of ram. I guess be very specific what you think is undoable, and I'd try it.
I use this machine for everything, and I'm usually overclocking so I don't test stability much; here's another quick run... still priming...

I really don't know what your talking about then, you say one thing and then I click on your sig and can't seem to find any settings or screen shots?!
All I see is that you say none of them are stable so far. If stable post settings I have loads of friends with Asus wanting to get there too.
Stable and useful for others in this thread is something like this:

Zucker if you can get 500x9 stable on X48 you are the man!
At 500x9 my setup does not last in Prime95 for long. 490x9 is Prime small fft and blend stable though :)
I will try, 8GB ram should make it doubly difficult, but I'll try.
@Jor3lBR: Next time, articulate yourself properly, I'm not psychic. Take a cue from kill_a_wat and say exactly what you mean; that attitude will get you no where with me.
What is stable these days? Is it still the 8hour P95?
Sorry for your bad day, I'm not the one to blame
I've read all my posts and they are plain and simple and has more information then needed. This is Q9650 OC thread to share experiences on this cpu OC.
So when you said you're not stable in one post and couple of posts down you say that you are it confuses a lot of people.
I just said if stable please post information to back that up and share results with ss proof and templates jeez...
I posted an example of what people here expect as stable and template model.
All Q9650 chips E0? Wanna be sure
Sorry for my E0la syndrome...
Thanks...
