    Best refrigerant for a small compressor.

    Hey ppl!

    I'm planning on building a direct-die phasechange for my gpu. It is going to be a school project. I have a 80w compressor and a condensor from a refrigirator. The idea is to keep it as cheap as possible. The compressor originally had r12 in it. What would be the best refrigirant for this compressor? I was thinking about r290, but i'm not sure about the extra stress it is going to add to my compressor. Also what temps could i expect @80w heatload?

    r290 will do just fine in a r12 compressor. with a 80watt compressor you should't expect to much of it. I would think around -15...

    that's why r290 would be a better choice.

    Or just add some R290 to the R134A. Depending on the compressor, changing the oil might not be a bad idea anyway.

    How much does changing the oil cost?

    since your in the Netherlands you can't get r134a without a license. and poe oil isn't that easy to obtain as well. Just use r290, make sure you vacuum the system properly.

    R402a will be the best

    but R290 will be good also ..R22 too .

    Charging that R12 comp with R134a is a nonsense I think ...you must change the oil to POE - that oil is quite expensive...and you need at least 1 litre of it, because you must do oil rinse with POE .

    @Sandman : R134a or R404a just "kill" the mineral oil and R290 won't help .
