[News] Canada Wants Software Backdoors, Mandatory Decryption Capability And Records

    http://www.tomshardware.com/news/can...ack,33131.html

The new Canadian government is looking to further expand its surveillance powers by requiring decryption capabilities for all services, mandatory storage of both internet and phone records for service providers, backdoors that allow interception, and warrantless access to basic subscriber information.
The government argues that it should be allowed to get access to basic subscriber information without a warrant. It gives examples of situations such as as when a person is missing, when there is suspicion of a crime, to further investigate a lead, and so on.

However, these situations could be addressed by a judge assigned for emergency cases. It?s also not clear which agencies would be able to access this information, but presumably the Canadian government would want to eliminate any sort of restrictions for any agency when it comes to accessing basic subscriber information.

For now, it looks like the Canadian government is at least willing to hear people?s opinions on this, and people can submit their comments on these issues on the government?s Public Safety website.

Actually no, which is an interesting point. It seems Canada has a problem similar to the United States: when the political parties agree on something, it is the common people that should be afraid.

But my point still stands. We keep letting this kind of thing happen. You vote for one party or you vote for another, but in the end the people we send to the capitol to legislate for us become beholden to the money that makes things tick.

I would say its the result of complacency and/or wilful ignorance. The policy, I'm sure, is in good faith but the people and politicians who support this don't understand, or want to understand, the implications down the road. Someone is going to inherit these powers and may not share those "good intentions." Or maybe they do understand this and are playing the people for fools, slowly boiling the frog...
