No you are not! You just think you are.

Think of it as another of your benches that you would like to hold top spot in and the linux bit, at least as much as you need to crunch, will actually be so easy that you will wonder afterwards what all the fuss was about.

I am not proposing that you go feet first into command line rather into ubuntu or mint with gui

Good grief man, If I can get it running then I am damn sure you can

EDIT: I would be happy to walk you through it should you feel the need.

I felt that way too. But after hearing the claims of a 30-50% boost/decrease in CPU and GPU WU time completion for many projects I figured it was worth a go. D_A and OC were very helpful in getting started. I would recommend the Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon 64 bit distro. It was easier to get than the Unity interface in Ubuntu.

Nice things about Linux from a newb perspective:
No more random reboots after Patch Tuesday.
    More secure
    Faster startup and shutdown
Multicore and multithread compatibility, so no paying for this feature(W7Pro/Ultimate/Enterprise)
Ability to install one distro on multiple computers for FREE!
    Desktop rigs:
    Oysterhead- Intel i5-2320 CPU@3.0Ghz, Zalman 9500AT2, 8Gb Patriot 1333Mhz DDR3 RAM, 120Gb Kingston V200+ SSD, 1Tb Seagate HD, Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon 64 bit, LG 330W PSU

    Flying Frog Brigade-Intel Xeon W3520@2.66Ghz, 6Gb Hynix 1066Mhz DDR3 RAM, 640Gb Hitachi HD, 512Mb GDDR5 AMD HD4870, Mac OSX 10.6.8/Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon dual boot

    Laptop:
    Colonel Claypool-Intel T6600 Core 2 Duo, 4Gb 1066Mhz DDR3 RAM, 1Gb GDDR3 Nvidia 230M,240Gb Edge SATA6 SSD, Windows 7 Home 64 bit

It is truly interesting that Supermicro would allow overclocking by default in their BIOS. I thought this was something they walked circles around!

Is this feature what they call Hyper-Speed?

I know you did it because you didn't care, but is it possible to do some nice cable management with their case? Is there space for hiding and routing cables?

yes, the adjustable BCLK to 106 is what they call hyperspeed.
As to cable management, it's possible.

Wow that was sick! And then overclocking!? Wire management on that would be a real PITA so i'm not surprised.

same pal, great to talk to you. Just was expecting a Aussie accent and had to do a "Oh yes, he's not from there" LOL

Now to everyone, not long after I did this review in June I had a heart attack. They put in 5 stents and shall we say it's been a long 5 months recuperating but I did get to test the top 12 core E5-2697 V2 Ivy Bridge xeons and also the top 8 core IB xeons, the E5-2687W V2's.
I have all the info and will put it together into part 2 of this review..
Teaser: As good as the 8 core SB chips are at 3612MHz the 8 and 12 core IB chips are simply awesome!
