Just in case anyone is thinking about purchasing a new Caviar Green drive. Mine was bought ten days ago and today suffered SMART errors. A whole 500GB partition is missing without trace and the system runs slow, VERY SLOW.
Too bad WD, never again.

Yep, only "Green" drive I've had no issues with are the "EcoGreen" Samsung F4EG 2TB drives I've bought. Not one issue and they get used and abused. I can't say that about any of the WD or Seagate "Green" drives.
Just about ready to put in place my WD Red 3TB drives into a RAID1 in a 24/7 system. Just a few more days of burn-in to go, but so far they are holding up to my tests since Thursday. If no changes in SMART and/or any performance glitches from out of box state, then into service they go!

it is to bad that the first thing seagate killed was the f4eg and moved it to a broken 7200 model.
if you want a reliable 5400 your only 2 choices are the WD red, or WD green re4. the normal green and all the seagates (including samsung) are just junk, as well as the hitatchi one WD makes.

Which 2TB drive would you recommend me? I don't need a deluxe drive, just want to store music/movies.
Thank you guys.
I have 5 dead WD Green drives sitting in my junk draw waiting to be dissected by my students. No other WD drive colour has died on me in the last 3 years, just the Green drives!
I do have 4 WD Green 2TB working in Raid and they seem to doing fine for now and 2 of them are over a year old now and in constant use.

i would go WD red (i have been looking at getting one) the 2TB is $120 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822236343 and the 3TB is $140 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822236344 with the promo code on the top of the page.
if you want something else
newegg has a 3TB toshiba 7200 that should be good for under $120 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-22149408-L07C . there is also a WD black 2TB for $170 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136792
you ether bought before the 7200rpm were on the same platters as the 5400 (the 5400 goes larger platter early,) or you bought long enough ago before they changed to using failed drives on 7200 as 5400, and slow as blue.

I have two blacks I bought a few years ago and they're still running strong. But blacks are much more expensive so I wanted to buy a cheaper drive since I don't mind about speed to store movies and music.
What's the difference between blacks and reds?
I noticed no one recommended Seagate HDD's. Are they so bad?
Thank you.
seagate is not bad, they are random. they dont have the same standards of binning that WD or samsung pre buyout have, and you end up with huge variation in performance, noise, and lifespan

I was thinking about getting some WD red's, everyone says you should get em, yet they are still fresh in the grand scheme of things, trusting manufacture stats and saying "they are for nas and such" just scares me, yet ive pretty much decided on the red
so much more expensive, SOO much louder..
i love my samsung 500gb, it makes a glorious quiet steam drive
hmmm too bad ive never noticed. thats why i laugh at people when they talk about needing faster hard drives..
the only bad thing about them is the spin up time and how often they spin down, appart from that I dont really see a reason to stop using them as boot drive, and ive used a few rigs with crucal m4 and sammy ssd, I really dont care if it takes 2 seconds to boot somthing as opposed to .5 seconds.. still faster than matters..
