My buddy's PC will not boot at his house, it just hangs at the Windows boot screen. So he took it in to CompUSA and they told him it was a bad motherboard. So he bought one, brought it over to my house and we installed it. Cool, everything works. He takes it home and it does the same thing. He brought it back over to my house and it boots just fine. Obviously something is going on over at his house but we can't figure it out what it is. Anyone got any ideas?

He might not be getting proper voltage to his house or that outlet. If you have an available UPS with AVR, it's monitoring software it will tell you voltage coming into the UPS. Plus it will adjust the output voltage to what it should be, so if it boots then you know it's his lines. Or just get a voltmeter and test the outlet...and be carefull, no sparky

May be the PSU. I had a situation where a customers PC would work just fine at my office, but would not boot past the windows loading screen at his house. We were stumped, and tried several things with many trips back and forth. I finally replaced the PSU and all was fixed. Only thing I could come up with for why it would work at my office and not his house, was his house power must have been too dirty for the failing PSU to cope with.

That's actually a good idea. I'll see if we can't switch it out and see if that helps. He did take it over to his parent's house and it fired right up so it's definitely something going on at his house.

PSU.. had a FSP unit that did that..

I'm tempted to suggest that before you spend money, try plugging a known good rig into the outlet at his house. In view of the fact that most psu's run on a voltage between 90 and 260v ish, if you have the means to, measure the voltage and then the voltage under load (any 1Kw and up load will do)

Sounds like an electric issue in the house, noise in the circuit, bad earth with a voltage running in it,phase problems. Or a simple lose wire in the plug you are using!

While it might be bad circuitry i don't think it's a bad bad plug. We've tried two different power cords and several different outlets.

It should be 120v If you have one of those multi-outlet extensions like we have here then plug in and stick the multimeter prods in one of the sockets on the extension. next connect a load like a heater or an Iron, do you guys have toasters or kettles? if so one of those would do, then put the prods in the adjacent socket ....Voltage should still be 120v if not there is a problem that needs fixing sooner rather than later..

US voltage is anywhere between 110V-120V typically.

Whatever the voltage is without load (in the range 110-120 then) it should stay the same under load
