that shot is awesome and the lens flare adds a great touch.
Thanks a ton Lestat, means a lot coming from you.

Yes shooting in .raw, and also biting the bullet and getting photoshop helped a lot too. Youtube helped in learning how to use it. ; )

RAW ultimately gives you absolute control. You are not relying on what your camera THINKS is the best way to handle the image. You do it all yourself. And, RAW allows you control exposure, white balance, and even vibrance much better than on a JPG where much of the image information is already lost and the image may be more compressed than you think.

In terms of when to use what, I think it’s quality vs. quantity. If you are just doing standard run of the mill family photos with minimal processing if any and you’re not as interested in quality as much as having a good set of images to preserve the memory of the event, then go for JPG.

But if you’re going to be shooting a bunch but then weeding out only the best. Say at a 10% return rate and you will work on each one to get the best photo possible that fits your vision and your mind’s eye? Then you are doing a disservice if you shoot in anything other than RAW. It gives you the highest degree of control to achieve an end result that you truly want without any compromise.

Weevil got 200% quality increase. Nice that you found your way to RAW world, your photos are definetly much better. Though, I would say you made some improvement in composition department too. You have some nice photos on flick.

Thanks Mescalamba, all the constructive criticism from you Lestat and others on this board over the last couple years have been invaluable. The only way to learn is to hang out with people that have better skills than you.

@EagleRock, and so it begins, you're gonna blink, and then he will be asking to borrow the car keys, "see ya later, can I have them please?"

saw a shot over at POTN today you might try next time you are around kites.
the person shot up the kite string and the kite was sharp.
looked realllly neat with the super blurry string which got clearer and clearer until it was nice and the kite was sharp.

oh... i bought a 5Dc today.. so excited!
now i just need to decide what lens(es) to get... was thinking the typical 50 1.4 and the 85 1.8 but that 135 F/2L is just friggin nuts... but will have to save up for all three. i can buy the 85 and 50 right now.
