    UPDATE

    ok folks, follow along closely:

    - I never tested this mobo before I got it

    - I do not have the correct RAM for this mobo ATM (it needs DDR2 ECC+REG)

    - the mobo has four onboard diagnostic LEDs

    my thought 'process':

    1) if the mobo shows nothing on monitor when turned on with no RAM in it nor any card in my mod slot - then I presume: no RAM = no signal to monitor

    2) if no smoke comes from anywhere, especially the slot - thats a dam good start

    3) the four diagnostic LEDs can show a plethora of combo's, thus a hugh range of problems... I looked up in the mobo manual &... all problems relate to RAM issues - except one, which pertains to the PCI

    4) If I turn on the mobo without the LAN card in my mod-slot, & a particular diagnostic error is shown on LEDs - then this would be purely due to the fact that there is no RAM present - cause clearly the mobo isnt going to be able to tell if its had the PCI contacts/traces extented (which is essentially all that *any* slot is, until a card is plugged in).
    SO
If I turn it on with the LAN card in, & the diagnostic LEDs have the same combo as when the mobo was without - imo, its a confirmation of sorts

hope everyone followed my train of thought

this shows that the power comes to the card. (that is what you wanted, right?)

edit: i see another free pci-slot... go for it

power @ the very least! - actually, when I turn it on, the LAN card 'activity' LED does a bit of blinking as well (which is suppose to happen iirc) - so looks like data could be functioning as well

another PCI? actually, if this mod is 100% success - then I will add a PCI-Express slot - there is contacts/traces below the current PCI-Express slot

    Regarding the inner layer concerns:

The through-hole via connects to the inner layers. You just need to get a good solder joint to the via (without burning it) and it'll connect wherever it's supposed to go.

Definitely should check for shorts before you power it up, but it looks like you've already got it going.

Wow--that's just awesome! Now your problem with PCI Express is finding a slot and soldering it--those traces are MUCH closer together.

mm, I'd say ur wrong there - I just measured the distance between the traces on the donor mobo - the dead DFI Expert - the traces are same distance apart as PCI (2mm by 2mm)

as for the plastic slot itself, I'll just buy one of these:

    http://www.orbitmicro.com/global/pci...185-p-741.html

& grab the plastic slot thingy from that
