Unlock Conroe Core 2 Multi. Using Intel 975BX!!!

This mod has yet to be confirmed to work, but from what was said at Quakecon here in Texas this weekend by an Intel marketing rep who was demonstrating the overclocking of Intels X6800. It is possible to unlock the multiplier upwards of any Conroe Core 2 Duo, using intels 975BX motherboard by soldering or using conductive paint on a solder point located on the motherboard. I do not own an Intel system but after this I just have to try. The jumper to connect is J8J4 marked MFG and is located between the Black serial ata ports, just to the right of a fan header. Anyone owning this board with locked conroe's may want to try this. I will post results after I pick up a system later this week.

Incidently, my game pc won Dells 3DMark06 contest landing me a Dell 24" LCD. I overclocked my 7900GT's to 695 core 825 memory and scored 10151 in 3DMark06. This is not a the highest score we've seen, but its the highest @ the event & I'm happy.

only on this board, not all intel chipsets?

that could be a huge bummer, for, well, everyone.
id be more than fine with a board that only did 300fsb, but had unlocked multi...

Only on the Intel 975BXBoard so far. This info come direct from the Intel marketing rep who held an "Intel Game On" seminar. I went to my local Fry's to verify the jumper was there and downloaded the pic from intel. I didn't see the jumper on any other board capable of running conroe Core 2 Duo there. The rep says they use this jumper to test their cpus back at the lab. He said "Intel loves overclockers". It's a marketing statement from a marketing rep directed at the gamers and enthusiasts there to get us interested in there products in a market that has been clearly dominated by AMD for some time. Hey but if it is so, everyone will want to grab an intel 975BX and a 6400 or 6600.

I hope it's true, however we have to be weary, would a marketing rep really want us all to be buying 6300's instead of 6800's?

AMD allows you to select lower multipliers on all their Athlon 64 CPU's. I don't know why Intel doesn't offer this option on retail Core 2 Duo's.

burninggrave101 you can lower the mutliplier, this is supposed to be for raising it (which intel normaly only allows with the 6800, just like amd's fx)

i'd prefer it if all multiplier were unlocked across the range (up and down), with speed binning seperating the pricing, rather than locked cpu's.

I thought only rev 304 and above would run Conroe without a mod.

the jumper still looks like it's there on rev 304 on the Intel site. Unless they have not updated a picture. If it works that rep'll be for the chop I reckon. I've got a Badaxe on order, it'd be a great bonus if this works. Whilst we don't know I can imagine Badaxe sales increasing in the suspense, so the rep will have done some favours for Intel.

So who tested it already? Didnt receive any C2D yet, but just got a new Bad Axe 304 after my 1st one died. This will be the deciding factor if i continue using the P5W-DH or change back to Bad Axe.

Could this work also with Pentiums? Maybe i will break the seal on the new bad axe and test this with D930 Well, maybe after i see it confirmed working with C2D

I don't think the revision is an issue. I saw this jumper on the revison 304 board as well. You are correct that 302's aren't suppose to bea able to run Conroe but the jumper is on that board as well. I'll edit the first post maybe take out revision #. The rep said it would work on all Intel 975BX boards, I've just only seen a 302 & 304 revison with the jumper & haven't tried it myself.

AFAIK there's not suppsoed to be two jumper pins, only 2 solder pads because the pins havn't been soldered on. It's a jumper nevertheless.

Sorry, "jumper" was wrong word to use. They are the solder points, edited first post accordingly.

If this works lets hope dfi et al can copy this 'feature' onto their boards.
