doctor pepper's desk
hi everyone,
I'm back for a new build-log!
I do appologize right away for this is not a watercooled computer I wanna build, but the aircooling section doesn't have such a build-log section, and I feel more comfy over here :D
For those who don't remember, you can check out my cosmos s build here
As for now, I just graduated from MedSchool and I'm gonna start working in a three-doctor's office in France (which is where I live... kinda logical  ). So I needed a desk!
... and this is where it all started!
(by the way, my name means pepper in german, so this is where the thread tittle comes from ;) )
I looked around in different shops, and this is the one I like most. Well, it doesn't look that cool on this picture.
Anyway, this desk happens to have a quite original piece of furniture: it has 3 drawers on the front... and another space, closed by a door, on the other side!! Since I wanna use this in my office I don't need that part on the patients' side, do I???
Well I finally came out with the idea of building my computer using this space as a case... and let it be seen through a glass window!
My main ideas were to build something :
- reliable (so air-cooled!)
- very quite
- powerfull and fast enough eventhough not a high-end PC
- pretty
I chose a black and white color scheme starting from the motherboard.
Here are the parts I selected:

http://dr.pfeffer.free.fr/pc/ordered.jpg = ordered
http://dr.pfeffer.free.fr/pc/dunnow.jpg = not ordered yet

(of course the red vga cooler won't live long!)
Then I started working (just a very little bit) with google sketchup, and here's what I came up with for this project :
(the keyboard/mouse/screen are not the ones I got, but I couldn't find them in the sketchup image store... same thing for the graphic card)

STEP #1 : getting parts, measuring and cutting holes
- got the desk
- 1st mounting to make the measurements (looks great... i'll see if i make pictures at this moint)
- then preparing the cuttings (cable management mainly!) > kinda scary todrill in that beautiful shiny white... :help:
preparing the cuttings stage 1: done
> got the models for the mobo and the back of the PSU cutted out and then drawn on the taped "backplate"... look at that:

> and this is just a glance to what it will look like (ok many parts are missing and the graphic card is my 8400GS-test-card... but you know...)

Hey il be folowing this project , fractal´s are great !
Soon il post here a review fo the Newton 800 watts psu:cool::D
Keep this updated mate !
-
according to what i understood to the mail from www.csv-direct.de (german) I should be getting the rest of the stuff soon (they should ship it today)
that would be: the graphic card and its cooler, the cluster box, SSD and the jump starter... can't wait!
right now I'm making cardboard models for the future holdings of the SSD and graphic card... since I have no conventionnal case, I need to get them tight to something... should look really clean, but can't tell you more for now ;)
-
This is going to be fun to follow. Subscribed.
Your sketchup looks great. How do you intend to run maintenance on your machine if your desk is pushed up against a wall? Just something to think about.
-
no problem for maintenance...
1st of, the desk won't be against the wall
2nd of, the transparent panel is an openable 5mm thick glass window (didn't wanna take the time to sketch it up right) as the ones you can get on HI-FI furniture... (already ordered ! ;) )
see for your self!
(by the way, thanx for the sketchups!)
big size
sketchup file for those interested !

I know the room is completely crooked, but that's the way it is, and I can't modify it (that huge pole in the middle sustains the house... can't get rid of it :) )
since I'm here talking... :D
the home (alone :ROTF:)
http://dr.pfeffer.free.fr/pc/IMGP2858.JPG
pardon my poor picture quality... Waiting for a new tripod for the camera, and using my up-coming baby boy's room as a "factory" ;)
and here's the mobo and mega shadow in it's future home.
http://dr.pfeffer.free.fr/pc/IMGP2861.JPG
looks kinda small on the picture, but it ain't !!!
got only 4cm of margin (that's under the mobo + what's left over that huge cooler)... gonna be tight :yepp:
-
Thumbs up. Looks like a great plan. Can't wait to see the outcome.
-
Excellent idea mate.
Congratulations on graduating from MedSchool Doc!
Well done.
As the cpu block is so large and it is mounted horizontally, do you need to support the weight of it so it doesn't bow the mobo?
-
doesn't seem like I will have to do that.
according to what I've seen so far, the mounting devices manage to do it right... will see that! but you don't need to in a regular case so why would I ?
-
little update on STEP 1 ;)
got the drilling machine and need to get my bud's jigsaw now... ooooh scaaary :D
-
A fun project - love the sketch showing the patient on the table.
-
got the jigsaw and the last order's on its way... should be drilling/cutting this week-end !
-
Now that is an interesting approach to modding. Very good! :)
-
ah haaaa!
the glass window should be here in a week or two... sleeving are on their way!!! (thanx nils! you're fast :D)
and I should be cutting this thing out tomorrow!
stay tuned ;)
-
got nil's sleeving, but damn, it ain't easy to get those cables right... :shakes:
-
ok, here's a little treat for those following my work...
so there's many different things going on according to what I feel like doing or can do...
this is the graphic card loosing it's radiator/fan to get the bifrost on!
the bifrost actually looses it's fans 'coz they're uggly and will get a modded 92mm fractal design fan. here's what i got so far:
before
http://dr.pfeffer.free.fr/pc/IMGP2885.JPG
strip tease
http://dr.pfeffer.free.fr/pc/IMGP2886.JPG
after
http://dr.pfeffer.free.fr/pc/IMGP2887.JPG
on mobo
http://dr.pfeffer.free.fr/pc/IMGP2894.JPG
'like how it looks...
crapy picture (sorry)... cutting the edges off
http://dr.pfeffer.free.fr/pc/IMGP2899.JPG
http://dr.pfeffer.free.fr/pc/IMGP2900.JPG
will fix this onto the bifrost when sleeving's done!
http://dr.pfeffer.free.fr/pc/IMGP2902.JPG
now let's talk about holes... (no human holes here... even though... nevermind :D)
feels weird to do that on a brand new furniture, but you gotta do what you gotta do, right?!
http://dr.pfeffer.free.fr/pc/IMGP2926.JPG
before jigsaw,
http://dr.pfeffer.free.fr/pc/IMGP2927.JPG
and after,
http://dr.pfeffer.free.fr/pc/IMGP2928.JPG
getting ready for the 140mm fan-holes
http://dr.pfeffer.free.fr/pc/IMGP2929.JPG
and here's a glance at what it looks like for now...
http://dr.pfeffer.free.fr/pc/IMGP2934.JPG
doesn't look straight, but it is! the tape makes it look that way (but it ain't!)
I now have to fill in the little holes on the sides (came in like this)
I do apologize for the look of all of this, but I'm pretty confident about he final look and hell I don't have callen_1's garage or Duniek's equipment ;) (I wish I had)
one last thing...
did that just to chear-meself up a bit after fighting with 6pin ATX cables :D
http://dr.pfeffer.free.fr/pc/IMGP2939.JPG
thanx to nils !

I also just graduated from the medical school.(Greece).I m preparing for practise as an intern doctor in Cleveland Clinic in US.:)
Nice work to your desk.
-
dude, this 92mm fan drove me crazy!!! :brick:
didn't count how many hours, but waaaay too much!
twice in a row I was finished, and when I tested the thing it wouldn't work... man I'm glad I'm done with this!!!
but hey, the result is what I wanted so I'm ok.
here's the fan ready to be mounted:
(who said I'm into details... noticed the modded sticker?!)

Hey, that's looking very cool
-
Great , its this really going to be a Doctor desk?
Because if it is you will be the coolest doctor :D
-
yeap, and I'm officially registered at the board of GPs since... last night :D
I'm starting working early april, so I gotta hurry up a bit !
