7900gtx oc's ONLY

I know there is a thread for listing 7900gtx/7900gt oc's but for some reason hardly anyone posted anything about the gtx's and rather everyone is posting about the 7900gt's and its respective vmods.

I am looking into upgrading (if possible) and was trying to decide what brand is best and if its worth it to buy and pre-oc'ed card.

So please list the following for your 7900gtx:

Brand: XFX 7900 GTX Extreme (675/850)
Cooling: Stock

Artifact Free?: These clocks are my max artifact free overclocks in battlefield 2. Unfortuantly for battlefield 2 not to artifact I had to lower the memory speed below what XFX rated it at. Memory runs 875 in most other games no problem it seems.

One thing I did notice, and this maybe only true with XFX, but from the factory there was a gap between some memory modules, and the cooling. :slapass:

So some memory chips were seriously overheating probably due to the static air pocket above them. The 7900 GT is passively cool, but there no no insulatation over the chip either (ie static air).

I took off the stock HSF, and applied AS 5, then tightened the heatsink down all the way to make better contact. There was still some gap, but better, and the memory made it to 845, instead of 830 or so before.

I thought the Samsung BJ11 was rated at 900 mhz? The timings on the XFX bios too tight?

I have the same card as you seems I can even get near 700, 695 is the max at the moment tommorow I'll try ocing further what is your pci express frequency?

Just the core. It helped lower the temp a bit, but the day I did it, the next day it was like 70 F outside, so it was hard to tell a difference.

You can't really put it on the memory chips, because the gap appears to be wide between the heatsink and chips. Even with the thermal tape, some chips have gaps, even after I tightened it down all the way. To me, from the factory that is simply unacceptable. :slapass:

Have you guys tried increasing Pci-express frequency to improve overclocks?

Did you happen to take off the white pads from the memory moduals?

I took mine off, and noticed that my heat sink does not touch the memory moduals without those pads.... check it out.

Tried up to 112 , oc stays the same ( back @ 101 now )

Edit : Hmm just read that kingpin says that 118 -125 max works ( 112 may be to low )

I use 107 for 24/7 settings. I have had it as high as 115 when benching. Seems to help things a bit. I guess I will have to try the 125 setting to see what effect it has.

I've seen PLENTY of information for the GT, but nothing for the GTX

What volt mod are you guys using? The one used on the 7800 GTX?

Reason I ask is the new 7900 GT for 1.4v seems really easy where you just have to connect to pins on that one chip.

Is there anything similiar for the 7900 GTX?

hi guys, so i have been playing around with my 7900 gtx EGS, and here is my OC'ed clock: 718/1788

before i bought this card, i was indifferent between EGS and superclocked one. but i thought that the EGS one should be able OC to superclocked's stock clock. as what i predicted, both cards are the same, just with different clock speed "stock", my EGS is able to match superclocked's one, and i could hit even higher clock on stock cooling. here is the conclusion, it's not worth to spend extra 80 bucks on the superclocked one, because you can OC the EGS to the same level.

hope my observation is valuable to those who are planning to get evga 7900 gtx and indifferent between getting EGS and superclocked.

the answer is DON'T SPEND THE EXTRA 80 ON SUPERCLOCKED ONE! SINCE THEY ARE THE SAME CARD. some people argued the superclocked one comes with better memory, and i am not sure about that. but as i have seen people's superclocked card's result. their OC'ed clocks are similar to mine on stock cooling and voltage.

Has anyone seen the new 7900gtx XXX? At newegg they have them listed stock as 700/1800!!! Thats awesome! Too bad they arent in stock.

But, keep in mind the XFX Extreme cards have no /almost no delta. So, the 700/900 timings are just that. Compare that to an EVGA SC with a 740 vertex core clock after the 50 MHz delta and at the same ROP/Shader clock of 702. The EVGA, even thoughat 690/880 is, in essence, clocked higher than the XFX XXX at 700/900.

Some will argue that no delta is OK since the ROP/Shader is still higher than the stock 650 core cards and does improve performance. The ROP/Shader bumps occur at 648, 675, 702 and 729. So, sotck cards are 700 vertex with 648 ROP/Shader while the XFX is 700 vertex ( or more if any delta exists - possibly 15 MHz?) and 702 ROP/Shader.

I run my card at 720 with a 60 delta, since the 729 seems to be the ROP/Shader limit. I found this limit when I removed the delta, which locks the clocks and these cores increment a clock at a time instead of the normal jumps.

So, with the edited BIOS, when I bench, my vertex core runs at 789 (729+60) and the ROP/Shader at 729 with the memory at 910. The no delta BIOS did not improve my OC and simply reduced performance.

the mem on these cards gets worse with volts and as a good 05 is dependent on the ram oc being higher than the core i am stuck

best ram i can get is 900 but just to drive me nuts the core will oc to 950
at 1.7v

the question is can the mem on all 79gtx cards be oc to 1000 one way or the other

or is it down to luck of the draw weather your card has golden chips fitted

Me and baz got mixed results here - I love the fact his core clocks as high as it does.

My mem does clock higher but again 940 seems to be the general limit. Looser timings could help push that up I guess - but we still need a BIOS editior that will alllow this.

With Baz's core and my memory though - it would be the card we all expected to get.

The 7900TX - although performs well, is still a disappointment in my eyes.

Next time I will buy 8 series cards then wait for 9 series to come out.

I can't be having this - nvidia have clearly squeezed all they can from this generation - but I would have been happier waiitng til august for the G80 to be released.

This on the back of a launch of FX60's which in it's self was disappointing as the series reaches it's performance limits.

Thus far 2006 has been a disappointing year for new hardware and extreme overclcoking :(

watercooling by dual Maze4 GPU blocks, rad is a PA160 with single 120mm fan (~110CFM although I think even this is overkill). ram is cooled by Vantec copper ramsinks with AS epoxy used and the same 120mm fan from the rad blowing over both cards. BIOS is the stock XFX bios x.x.x.12...nothing changed there.

I found that I can BIOS flash up to 760Mhz GPU with 20 Delta - then I can overclock to 780Mhz in powerstrip, ram stays at 940.

Hey guys, for those of you wondering, is it possible that the timings on most gtx's are far too tight? I mean, isnt 1.1ns ram rated to 900 AT LEAST? I have been hearing things that nvidia ram timings are tighter than samsung spec so its possible that the people getting 1000+ clocks have either a manufactuerer that used stock samsung specs or have modded the timings to samsung manufactuerer specs. I mean, my logic is also this, if so few of us have cards that can really be pushed past 900+ memory, then how can XFX offer a card with 1800 mhz memory stock? I would think the only way they could do that is by laxing timings to samsung spec right?

exactly what i suspected weeks ago. unfortunately there is no support from NiBiTor to change timings. I am waiting patiently for the next release after 2.8a.

when you change the timings in ntimings the hex number top left changes

i think if you copy and past that new hex number into nibitors you can change the timings

timings cant be changed on the 7900gtx using the latest nibitor release. needs to be updated for 7900gtx full compatability.

So then all we can do is try and get ahold of a bios like the XFX XXX or some other card that hits some above average memory clocks right? Do you know which ones we should be on the look-out for?

Now running my XFX @ 685 / 1750

It appears to be *stable* - but I am seeing some major lockups in multiple games. It locks up for a minute (or two) and then comes right back and continues on with the game.

Also, I fired up Doom 3 to see how the 512MB RAM would help. I am at 1280x1024 with all of the effects turned on and the AF set to 4X. I tried running it at 8x and 16x, but the card couldn't handle it. I guess I am disappointed with that as I thought I'd be able to max everything out and maintain great FPS. Does it sound like I have something not running quite right?

ya that doesnt sound right.... i ran doom 3 on my old 6800gt with some AA/AF just fine and high textures...

Where can I learn about this whole delta thing and how it relates to the 7900gtx? I have a BFG 7900GTX...any info on what delta it has?

Quick question that is kind of on topic...

i am getting tired of waiting on the "superclocked" evga 7900gtxs. I want to order something else, and today!

Overall, what is the best for overclocking and sli? Regular gtxs overclocked, or 7900gts with the volt mod etc? I will be on air cooling.

Any info on how to do the volt mods would be appreciated.

Well the gtx's with voltmods would rape, but if you were comparing vmodded gt's to non-vmodded gtx's then the gt's would rape.

Well are they both easy to v mod? If that was the same on both cards, then I would go for the 7900gtx...

There might be stock in retail chains, but online there is none. Also, the GTX are even easier to vmod in my opinion. You get much more control over voltage with a variable pot then by connecting legs on the voltage controller of a gt....but thats just me.

Thx, looks simple enough. Soldering the resistors is easy, but what does it mean "Set at maximum resistance of 100K ohms. Lower resistance to increase Memory voltage"

Guys, I was just trying to hit 900 with my memory and got a "error" report from coolbits when testing. Am I really that unlucky that my memory wont even do the rated 900 or is coolbits just that crappy? Ive read somewhere something sort of strange but anyway, someone claimed that raising the PCIe bus helps get you higher OCs...

Well your right and wrong. The ram can do 900mhz with proper timings, but NV has set them much tighter than standard spec.

Ok so I assume that means that whenever coolbits gives me an error that is more than likely the limit right?

No, I think coolbits has it limits, it just wont go over 900mhz unless you mod your bios to say 850, then coolbits lets you clock 20percent higher than whatever memory clock you have. So do that, but I though you were saying artifcating and stuff when trying to push above 900.....

You know that coolbits makes you test the speed before letting you select it. Thats where I am getting the error while its doing that pretesting. Do you think its safe to ignore that or am I better off taking its advice?

click the light bulb and give it a value of 1

this will dis able any "test" feature....

I get 720/925. Coolbits detect 709/908 as optimal. BFG 7900GTX. Currently running it @700/900, it runs extremely cool. Haven't seen the temp goes over 50C yet.

Is the 820Mhz clock stable for 24/7 use..? My ram goes to 940 without artifacts (no heatsinks), but I can go all the way up to 980/990/1000Mhz with artifacts.. I even managed 1 run thru 05 at 1010Mhz ram..

My 24/7 settings is 860/940 with 1.7vgpu and stock mem voltage..

The beast in my sig is cooling the card.. :)

My problem is that I cant get Riva Tuner to show any Overclocking options. I dont know if its my 84.21 driver or the 7900 but it seems not to be supported.

Thing is, even if I go with the pathetic auto detect settings... my scores still get worse then stock speeds... or, the app freezes/crashes.

Can you give me a report on that please? I have been trying to decide whether its really worth it to go with a 7900gtx or just go with a 7900gt... I am disappointed because the gtx's dont seem to scale that well, I mean 710+ @ stock and a max oc of 820 for a lot of people w/ 1.7v? Seems like it scale pretty bad to me.

This is somewhat true, the replacement xFx YDL9 i have here
is doing 720 with ease @ 1.45 vgpu & under phase I can hit
over 800 with slight bump of vgpu. I think with DI or LN2 my
one card here should be good for over 900 core clks. :D
In conclusion my YDL9 (650/1600) card is performing just as good
as my YDE9 (675/1700) card overall.
My next step is too match up the two cards with same bios settings.
I say the 7900 gtx is still worth it in my book, but everyones
circumstance varies due to budget, etc..

Well I can afford it, but since I like to tweak a lot I figure why spend all of it on a GPU if I can get a cheaper one that performs almost the same and then get some BH-5? Lol, but knowing myself, I am going with the gtx. EVGA EGS is what I am looking out for or the XFX standard.

Well so far I have run a TON on benchmarks... none of it seems to effect the scores very much.

FYI - I put my opteron to 2600, so I could compare the results with my stock fx60/7800gtx.

Trying just the memory first - I went from 898 - 910. Scores are all withing 100 points ( average 11,500) in 3d mark 05.

Now I am trying to up the gpu.... getting tired though, probally pick up tomorrow.

I wish these damn tests didnt take so long to run!

Interested in seeing your benchmark scores as I read that after 700 core one needs to concentrate in the memory for higher returns. Keep it going dont get tired now :-)

I was just playing with coolbits and noticed something that really tells me that its very wacky. I tried 5 times 707 core and it gave me the error message but after trying each time I tried 711 and it passed all the time! How come is more stable at 711 than 707 for 5 consecutive times?!

Yea, sometimes it would pass at higher settings, then give back a crappy 3d 03 score?! No artifacts or overheating.. just worse scores. Last night with my opteron at 2800mhz I hit

Thats wierd. Well guys, after more reading and thinking, I am picking up and EVGA 7900GT CO superclocked. I figure 550/1580 @ 1.2v core voltage is perfectly fine since I will be vmodding and the gt's look to hit around the same max core 800+ that the 7900gtx hit. Memory clocks damn well too.

850 on the core with stock volts :eek: thats pretty sweet..

Your other card is mounted on the Baker GPU cooler....I'm still trying to figure out these cards and wtf I'm doing :wth:. I think I basically need to find out how much voltage it takes to get to what speed....:p:
