LDBHE 3800 x2/Sapphire RD 580 results tonight

Ok guys just finished 3 loops of memtest before I started installing windows. Am testing all components prior atm on my RX 480 board that im way familiar with to get a baseline of what this hardware should be able to do.

Test config for baseline is as follows

sapphire RX480
LDBHE 0601 XPMW 3800 x2
2x1 gig OCZ plats ddr 400 (yah i know, Ill play with Bh-5,tccd,ballistix later but first want to test high density performance)
Seasonic s12 500watt
ATI retail X1800xt

First ill do stock elcheapo HS results then high end water(DD rbx brasstop with high perf nozzle,swiftech MCP 600,and a custom heatercore with 2 delta fans), phase will have to come later.

This should wrap up 2 threads as once I've tested the x2 3800 for those that were interested I will swap the above config into a sapphire RD580 board.

ATM i can't post pics of my board and please do not ask or pm me on how i obtained the board as you will get no answer.

Good idea to set a baseline. I await the results of both the 3800+ and RD580.

Sapphire RD580 :eek: great! Is this one you have in hand is a Pure Innovation style, like the RX480 was?

Suggestions: if you have a DFI NF4 mobo, that would be nice to compare overclock (like did you acheive better overclock, etc.)

This is a RD 580 which the RD means X fire. RX is single PCI X. As far as comparing it to DFI my RX 480 is just as good as the dfi nf4 board.

The only difference between the 2 is the sapphire actually boots up everyday with no issues........and is far more reliable and consistent. However if you want me to compare a board that i have to rub once kick twice install one stick of ram pray and swap 2 sticks to the other color dimm slots you can send me one for testing as i got rid of mine along time ago. Sorry for the rant, i still have a bad taste in my mouth from that experience.

Hey chew can you test how easy it is to overclock the ram? I can't seem to overclock any ram on my sapphire for the life of me. Also please test to see if a single vidcard will work on the top slot and if possible mark any performance losses. Sorry for the requests.

Ive been told there are improvements to ram Ocing and they made quite a few changes to the dimm mapping so we shall see. the video is one of my first agendas.

I think this board will die or live by its PCI slot or lack thereof. Seriously, when people game, they want the best sound possible and lowest cpu utilization.

Well so far so good for the RX 480/3800 combo. Windows install was smooth as butter and its now priming at 2.5 gig stock volts stock cheap non heatpipe version heatsink. Since im trying to do this fast i will run for 1 hour dual sp 2004, this is not proof of stability but just more of a baseline. I will keep pushing it on stock cooler till it fails at stock volts. I'm not dumping volts into it on stock heatsink though sorry guys. I will reserve that for water. I would rather give you guys realistic speeds and 1.55 vcore is not realistic for 24/7 on this cooler. I will later pull my notorius 48 hour straight dual prime once everything said and done.

which is why i specifically showed ati system manager in screen shot to show its stock volts and that cpu-z is bugged as far as vcore on this board...........Look at the top left and youll see its 1.35 vcore.......

kb acts as a spring, since it is spring loaded. It will cushion the fall and gently wake u up so u can finally test the rd580.

i can't wait to see if the problem asus is having is only for them and not 580 in general.

Was trying to make you feel good considering you were worried when it was booting by wiggling atx connector on antec crap. Anyway if it makes you feel better there was a broken cap that got replaced and a few leaning towers of pizza that got resoldered. :) On another note It seems I'm at the high clock point where if you put the board under load + have ati system manager and cpu-z open the board will shut down so those aren't being run in background while i prime now. 38-39C cpu at 1.4 volts passing now at 2750, time to turn it up some more.

BTW situman you never answered me when i asked if you wanted that $30 swiftech chipset heatsink back.

Eva as far as i know it still uses SB450 so you can probably take whatever results were done on grouper and use those. As i got a lot of money tied up already in this I have no plan for running 4 x sata raid. If someone wants to loan me 4 for testing then i'll do it, But i think most users are gonna want to see crossfire performance versus 4 x raid so my money is going for a master card. Not only that but i think that XFIRE will put the board under alot more stress than a raid array.

Well from the look of it this board does. I see none of the chips for the master card on the board. I'll double check later with my source but im preety sure it does need one.

Ok maxxed out cpu as far as im willing to go with volts on water(1.5). Time to make a pot of coffee install the RD 580 do a fresh install and see what it can do.

Just for kicks i booted up the new board with my Rx 480 windows install and i was greeted by a pleasant surprise. A very high definition bootup logo depicting RUBY which I cant even consider a logo as the image looks like one portrayed in an actual demo. It also appears that the drivers are the same so I think ill play with it like this and see how it works out. If i have issues I'll do a fresh install.

ok so since i cant publish 2 projects this is going to have to suffice. I think the results are to close and inconclusive atm. I think I will have to rerun the bench 3 times in each slot with a fresh reboot each time and make an average to see what it turns up.

I figured i might add some things I've noticed thus far. My particular board uses the same heatsink as the mosfet cooler with the little oem fan on it. Both the mosfet heatsink and the NB have not been removed and repasted by me and neither one is warm to the touch. I'm guessing the 8 pin power feeding the PWM may have something to do with it running cooler. As far as the NB goes its a die style now versus IHS style and seems to run alot cooler then the 480 chipset did.

Initial results shows the manta is definitely on par with its bretheren the grouper and then some. Same voltage,same multi,same memory settings but this is a tad different as i have this set at 10X290X5xHT instead of where as i usually would need to use a 3x HT multi on grouper. Vcore is still bugged with cpu-z it seems but not half as bad. Cpu-z now at least recognizes startup voltage just not the vid offset.

I/O performance will be a little higher on this board. There are more lanes allocated for the northbridge to southbridge link (compared to Grouper) so you will see some improvements. Somewhere around 5-15%. Disk drive benchmarks are very competitive...especially in RAID 0. But if you want real drive benchmark data you need to run a real world scenarios like iPEAK or file copy tests. HDTACH and other benchmarks that report burst speed are not indicative of the real world performance.

For X1300, X1600 (and even X1800 very soon) a master card is not needed to enable Crossfire. The strength of the RD580 is evident in scenarios like this, where pci-e bus bandwidth is actually taxed.

The bus bandwidth is also taxed to some degree with high end Crossfire (like X1900XT) especially when overclocked..but don't take my word for it...just ask Sampsa...he'll tell you. ;)

Don't expect to see any difference between the slots...the RD580 is *true* dual x16 and both slots are exactly equivalent in terms of performance unlike some others. ;)

Grayskull surfaces again...welcome back. So you are saying even though Sapphire labelled the slot as Primary and Secondary, it really doesn't matter. We can plug the cards into any slot and it will boot right up no problems?

With a single card it doesn't matter where you put it.

I might think about this board myself if I see them release a new BIOS for the previous PI 480 board.

I don't expect companies to support ancient boards and I do expect them to support a previous model released a few months ago to a year. For example if ASUS doesn't release anymore BIOS updates for the A8R MVP.

I suppose some companies could take the position that folks should buy their latest, and I'd ask why, when they didn't support the one released a few month ago.

Top rate hardware is great and not something I am going to invest in without proper timely TS. Particularly when it is released bugged and may be fixed.

The updated bios for the PI 480 board is ready according to Sapphire and should go up before the end of the week. This is what we are being told.

Working on some tccd results atm just my darn sticks are finicky and there are quite a few new settings so bear with me. I guess most of you would like to see ddr 550 2.5-3-3-6 and ddr 600 2.5-4-3-7? I can guess why the x1900 isn't in the list of masterless cards. I'm guessing that it might actually be bottlenecked without the dongle. Possibly due to the large # of shaders versus the x1800 xt

Hmm easier is the wrong word and the wrong reason I would think. With more settings It tends to take more time. Etc this board not only has weak and normal Dram drive strength, it also has P and N DDR drive strength settings from 1-15 for both. I would be more interested in if it can clock memory higher than the previous board and am working on that now.

There is no reason that two X1900's cant go dongle-less just like 2 X1800's.... other than ATi feels like having it that way. Just like there is NO reason the cards cant work in NF4 boards other than ATI coded thier drivers to forbid it. Enough with the BS.

And if the bandwidth is a bit too low for best results dongle-less... then just turn up the PCIe clock from 100Mhz to 150Mhz. Certainly a 50% increase in clock speed will fill in the gap.

Time for ATI to knock off the crap and pull the prohibitions out of the drivers.

You wanna sell me 2 X1900's.... then allow them to work in my NF4 SLI-DR, sure it wont be as fast as using the dongle, but Ill live. Eventually if the RD580 based boards get good enough, Ill consider switching. Im certainly open to that, but if the RD580 boards cant at least EQUAL the performance/feature abilities on the NF4, why the hell would I bother.

Meantime on RD580 testing, time to see how far BH5 2x512 and 4x512 go, as well as TCCD and Ballistix goes. Get'er done.

I'd like to see UTT BH5 results. Vdimm options are still good right? If I can get 270 2-2-2-5 still with 3.6v I'll be happy :) Might even sell my DFI boards and pick this up if possible...

They are benching sticks and that is there sole intended purpose........Seeing as how real TCCD and BH-5 are no longer available or very rare I would think it is inconclusive.....2 gig dimm performance would be more realistic for most users. Of course since my bank account is dry atm I have no plans to purchase 4x512mb dimms just to test. If anyone want's to send me ram for testing i will do so....otherwise you'll have to live with what i have which is the following 2x256mb bh-5, 2x256mb TCCD F1 LA week 440, 2x256mb TCCD F1 LE week 437, 2x 256 crucuial ballistix pc 4400, 2x512 mb Corsair speed binned UCC pc 3200( i run at ddr 500 ) 2x1gig OCZ infineon 2-3-2-5 Pc 3200 and last but not least my personal favorite 2 gig OCZ plats EB PC 4000. I also have a bugdet set of 2x 512 supertalent pc 3200 that i can test for those who want to know if they can get away with using cheap ram on this board........

I've seen Macci running 390x4 in the lab. The only trick is that one of the memory timing parameters (read preamble I think it was) needed to be changed at such high HTT...which is specifically a CPU thing...not chipset.

For all practical cases, x4 (800MHz mode) is the lowest you need to go...and that will be above 320htt. For anything lower, x5 (1GHz) should be okay but it does depend somewhat on the processor so results do vary a bit. But that is the ballpark.

Understandable since you don't have the stuff. However, I'd definitely disagree that just because TCCD and BH5 are hard to find now that it's less realistic, just look where you are ;). As for the UTT BH5, I believe the G.Skill GH still uses that and a lot of people are still using older Redline, OCZ VX, etc. Maybe somebody with 4x512 of that stuff can let you borrow some for a while and see how the Sapphire board works with it. Either way, keep up the good work! :toast:

Grayskull do you have any insight to why Sapphire went with the SB450 southbridge and not the ULI? Is it because of the close relationship with ATI or what?

I would guess as to the fact that they used the SB as there is nothing wrong with it in real world applications........

Isn't the SB460 pin-compatible with the 450? That would be my guess as to the reason....

id take a working board with a crappy southbridge than a pos with sata 2 and better usb that i use for my ipod, printer and memory sticks...

Yes it will. Pay no attention to the thread crapper. He's just ticked off that he can't run 2 ATI cards in an nvidia board but for some reason doesn't bash nvidia for the same thing....

The mastercard and dongle is still required for x1900 series cards however is not for x1800 or lower.

I am new to Amd systems ... I actually just built my first Amd OC system with the specs below and I am currently geting a 1000 Mhz OC at stock volts with an Amd Stock 165 heatsink on a Ultra -d.

Now, I have another retail 165 UPMW with even a better batch number of 0069 [ I learned about the batch number issue reading one of your threads and if it the last four digits on the third line then it is indeed #0069 ] ... do you think an RD580 board will give me even a better OC on air than I am currently getting with the Ultra -d? 311 HTT, 9 multiplier, 3 LDT [ never tried any other ldt ]

The reason I bring up LDT is because from my reading, the RD580 will run at a 311 HTT with a 4 or 5 LDT but how much actual real program perfomance gains will that accumulate to, if any at all? I use 3d programs ... will a 165 [ 311 htt, 4 ldt ] render faster than a 165 [ 311 htt, 3 ldt ]

I am looking for a board to go along with this ' better batch ' 165 but I am not sure how much more this 1.8 Ghz can actually OC to

I'm honestly not sure if there are any gains atm as i havent tested but when i ran 4x Ht by 370 last night and was copying ,pasting, uploading, and posting the machine appeared to be running alot quicker. Ill have to do some further testing on that. As far as a higher OC I wouldn't go as far to say that but as a more stable platform i will say yes. Once its dialed in right from my experience its set it and forget it. No cold boot issues,warmboot issues, or any other issues.

I would like to see some side by side comparisons of running 5,4,3X LDT with the same HTT to see what are the performance numbers...

Also, let's say for arguements sake, 340HTT is the highest at 5xLDT, how much of a diff in performance is it at let's say 400HTT at 3XLDT?

Hey chew great work on that thing, you are about a week ahead of me, crapload of memory timings on this thing makes for onr hell of a learning curve, i did some math and just playing with the 5 different drive strength areas alone gives 1560 different combinations.
