FX-60 w/ LS

Hey I picked up a FX60 yesterday (CCB2E 0548RPMW), I got my LS a few days before. So, far I have gotten up to 3.2 dual prime stable. I've gotten 1M stable pi at 3555, but still working with stability issues. I've booted into Windows at 3.6, but after that I cannot.

I'd say this cpu is not crazy about the cold (nothing too extreme), but it gets hot quick and my LS is getting into the positives easily usually 4-6C. I know this thing can do more, but I will have to get my temps right. I get the feeling I need to initially boot up warm and then start getting my temps down because I can really lower voltages after I have gotten my temps up which makes me wonder what I could do if I could just keep my temps down w/ higher voltages.

Oh, if anyone has got Ballistix 2x1gb kit let me know what settings you are running w/ because it seems like I cannot get them stable over 250, but maybe it's a memory controller issue.

I have not had much time to play with it so hopefully I can get some more out it.

You DO NOT want to keep your temps down by using higher voltages.....that's the wrong way to go about the cold-bug. You'll do some serious damage to your cpu over time......;)

Very, very nice result for an unmodded LS I'd say...puts it around many 57's. Should be able to pump out some tremendous 3D with that.

3.2 dual prime stable is killer! Nice chip :)

What IS the proper way to get around cold bug then?

And why do you and so many other people say voltage will kill yet NONE OF YOU have ANY proof WHAT SO EVER of voltage killing a CPU. I've asked this MANY times without any proof provided. I'm running 1.65v 24/7 on air cooling with my 165 and it still works flawless. My other chips ran for months at 1.8v+ on water and still work.

Yes, that's what I meant...I'm just not used to speaking in terms of RAISING temps :p:

Proper way to work around the cold bug? There's a few things one could do....for example: What you do -> load the cpu with a "heating" prog in order for it to stay in windows.....

Another is to install a 1/4" cold-plate between the cpu and the evap/container head. For each 1/4" die-sized copper plate, your temps should increase ~ 4C. Your holding/load temps should improve a bit as well.....

How does one prove that voltage killed their cpu? If you think about it, there are many real-world examples of how voltage can possibly kill equipment. You say you've run your cpu's @ 1.8v for months on end. If the cpu was a 1.4V cpu, then you're talking about roughly a 30% overvolt from recommended vcore. How many electronically powered things can you think of which will function properly @ 130% of their rated voltage?

Yeah it's 130% of rated voltage. But if voltage has never killed a CPU then you have no grounds to say it WILL kill a CPU.

I ask again....how do you PROVE a cpu was killed by voltage? There are numerous threads which talk about an overclock on a cpu deteriorating over time. Wouldn't that be considered as a cpu "dying"? Look at what happens to memory with prolonged use @ higher than rated Vdd's.......YOu may not see the effects of high vcore on your cpu's if you don't keep them for long, but it doesn't mean the cpu isn't "dying".....

How do you prove it? A chip dies after you kick the volts up to 1.9-2v. Easy right? Well to each his own, you can run your low volts and I can run my high volts. I'm going to be keeping this 165 @ 1.65v for a while so we'll see what happens :)

If you're talking about sudden death from voltage, then YES, there have been quite a few cases where people try to boot their cpu's at an outrageous Vcore and the cpu just quit on them....I'm not gonna try to dig up every instance, but I've actually killed a Clawhammer 55 because either A) I set the vcore way >2.0V by accident b) the brand new DFI board that it was installed in pumped so much voltage into the cpu that the heatspreader was still hot after pulling the evap head off. In fact it was so hot that the IHS actually moved from it's original position. (I tend to lean toward choice B)
Your opty @ 1.65, imo, isn't too bad.........

i like the plate idea. nice finish, too. i hear these are also good for condensation since you can completely seal off the CPU area much easier.

1.5v+ on air isnt good, and voltage does degrade AND kill

how to keep CPU warm at minimal cycle costs... folding! folding.stanford.edu. im at 100%x2 24/7, and i have tried 3d06 before and after i lose like 50-100pts max. of course shut it down for benchmarks but no need for daily use including gaming

afi...that's not nice to suggest other people to ramp up the vcore just to keep it warm :lol: you're just lucky that your other chip survived 1.8v....keep knocking on the devil's door and I'm sure sooner or later you'll get a big surprise! 1.65v is pretty much the highest I'm willing to put through these s939 on phase change, I wonder if you ever seen OPB's blown up FX chip with big hole in the middle due to excessive vcore :D :D


The loading plate looks like a good idea, using a very thick and cheap ratshack thermal paste probably could give you couple more degree as well.

I think it was proven in your own thread if you ever bothered to read the responses. Many CPUs have died at 1.8+ volts

I'm only running 1.6V (it gets me booted and is stable), but once my LS temps go down (less positive) I can run 1.45V and be stable.

My thoughts exactly. That's what I was trying to say in my first post. I need voltage to boot up, but after that I could turn it down and be fine.

@ absolute 0: Got any pics of your Chilly1 SS in the V-2000. That's what I will do next time after I learn how to use this LS some more.

I can get you some in a little bit, right now i've only got the picture of fitting the bare compressor into the bottom of the V2000 with nothing else installs... it kinda gives you an idea of what i am doing. Right now it looks a bit nicer, got a side window for the case and some UV lights.

lol, you been in contact with jin? He did the modding. The bottom is reinforced to hold a SS, there are padding strips lining the bottom, the oval hole is enlarged to allow the hose through, and there is a square cut out for the backplate on a phase.

I've got this Corsair memory and I think I will try it after I play w/ the Ballistix some more. Do you think I should get some Mushkin Redline w/ Winbond?

Agreed, I'm not a UTT fan. But in terms of my BH5/BH6 interests, just check my sig... :cool:

Does subzero change memory behavior (actual sticks) or is just memory controller?

Mem controller is affected negatively, memory sticks are affected positively (although not a huge amount, maybe 1-2MHz, with a SS).

Nice Kyle! Make 2 pi mod folders and run two instances to load both cores though, a lot harder to run ;)

@afireinside: umm, issn't it a known fact that high volts kill cpu's? didn't pre-mature bios's for either the dfi expert or some other mobo kill cpu's because of wrong vcore values. also the ram jumpers in the early days of the ultra-d killed ram :slap:

just because at 1.65v doesn't instantly die, doesn't mean its not deteriorating.

@afi: So that's how you run two pi's, I know about setting the affinity w/ task manager, but not needing two separate folders. It makes perfect sense thinking about how pi generates files. Thanks

Without wishing to h/j the thread, what paste do you guys use? I've been using AS5, but it's out of spec below -50 so I'm going to use Ceramique next time.

I use Artic Silver ceramique, even the evercool-350 ceramique paste that came with the XP-90 works down to -48C' for months without any issue :D :D

I'm not sure what the early ultra-D's did but the experts killed CPUs because they would spike the vcore from 1.5 or whatever you had it at all the way up to 3. That's very bad. You can kill a volt modded graphics card like that. Turn the pots to fast and the quick voltage spike kills it.

Stone_cold_jimi> Arcitic Silver Ceramique is the best sub zero paste and probably the best paste all around. I've seen it be better or worse than AS5 by like 1C but it's safer (non conductive) and cheaper. You can get a 22g tube of ceramique for 8 dollars or something comapred to paying 6 or so for a 3.5g tube of AS5. BIG difference. AS5 is only good down to -40 or -50C while ceramique is good until around -180C I think.

I HIGHLY doubt drive strength works. No one has been able to get it to work AFAIK and all the OCZ guys have said is theres settings and stuff under NDA which is just absurd. Overclockers used to find vmods and stuff as a team and now we have people with inside info with mods, settings, and BIOSes that they won't release.

I agree. It is total BS with all this nda garbage and all that junk.

Drive strength did help me get my RAM over 250. - Thanks to mzdcpa

Only reason I use volts is to get started b/c my startup temp is -20C. I will lower that value and turn off my LS to let it warm up, lower volts and see what happens. Like I said I haven't had time to play with it too much recently, but I will get to it.

I will try to up the voltage some, but last time I tried I don't think it liked much more than what I've given it so far. I might be able to go up to the next percentage overvolt. I'll let you know crash.

Testing 267 x 12 (appears to be stable) as stephen suggested.

The difference between stressing the one GOOD core for 26 seconds and stressing BOTH cores for 26 HOURS is quite a difference. I bet his dual 1m is much lower, both due to heat and one core not being as good.

What's the verdict on these then? Not cold bugged in general? I'm becoming very keen to get one if it will live under my LS. I have 1/ a brilliant pair of Z503; 2/ a pair of G.Skill HZ here Monday; 3/ an A8N32-SLI that has reasonable performance while being very robust; 4/ a broken Expert that has to be RMA'd. My Venice 3500+ is frankly disappointing, my Opty 146 is almost certain to be cold-bugged.... just seems that an FX-60 might be the answer. FX-60 + Expert + Ballistix + LS. Hmmm, it's like a damn gravity well.

But yet all of them are coldbugged and the SPMW is not that much better. Talked to a few guys about this (thats why i was thinking of selling my fx60 rpmw and going for a spmw) but after tsalkin to a few peepz i realized i wouldnt be better off.....

I thought the one of the reasons for Pi Mod was the checksum validation. Here's one at Iteration 23 and Completed. I would've taken it at an earlier Iteration, but I was watching Stroker & Hoop. :D

Going to try to go higher. I think this FX is starting to run pretty well.

:slobber: try running a dedicated fully tweaked OS for pi and your times will be a lot better. Oh and internet explorer is bad ;)

There are certain tweaks for running pi and i know wondows server 2k3 is the choice OS.

I though XP was better for 8M or higher?

By dedicated OS I mean a 100% stripped down OS. No internet, no audio, no wallpaper or anything, classic windows theme, tweaked registry, minimal services. Just the OS /w essential parts, drivers, and bench apps :)

If you're gonna do a fresh install, do one with win2k3 server. You'll need to find out how to optimize it so it can function as a workstation, but once you do, you'll find that is a much, much more stable OS for spi and overclocking in general (well at least in my opinion)

that's sad.. 1gb sticks are an interesting challenge ;)

i'm presuming these are the ballistix with 5b D chips... in my experience, micronis able to do some surprisingly right secondary timings with a bit of work, provided you aren't too close to the max stable.

try to get trfc down to ~11-12
trrd = 0
twr = 2
twtr = 1

i haven't used 5b D, but my experience with a very similar micron IC that's the same size tells me that idle cycle limit 0 is best for clocking.. and generally provides best performance too ;)

and see how low you can get read preamble. you might be able to pull off 4.0ns

Switching from single core to dual core on the same install = bad. A friend of mine had some pretty irritating general instability from that, I'd say you're doing very well considering the circumstance. That said it's time to fix it. Here's a guide that shows how to trim of some of the extraneous features of 2k3, and make it generally less annoying to work with.

You can say that again.....I had serious heat problems when I installed my FX55 after previewing one of the first x2's produced. Thing is, nobody at the time had ANY experiences with the dual cores so I was left trying to figure out for myself wth was actually wrong. :rolleyes:

hmm, well i am on the same install with my Opty 148 as i was using on my X2, so ACPI multiprocessor is on.

My temps on air and water were fairly normal though... loading around 42C with 1.5 volts at 3+ Ghz on water.

Temps on my single stage are a little worse than they should be though.
Any explanation on ACPI multiprocessor? I dont know why but it makes things hotter?

It's basically the "Ricky Tweak". Your single core processor is trying to assume the workload of a dual cpu machine. Therefore, it will rarely be in idle. The only way to really fix this is to repair the install of windows......

Thanks to ozzimark for the recommendations on the memory timings. Could not reach 4.0ns, but still my SPi times dropped by ~35 seconds on each core. To ozzimark :toast:

You were able to push your ram higher i realize but what else were you having problems with that was limiting the cpu. Didnt give too many details o nthat. What did you end up changing for a higher oc.

Show us some 3DM05/06 action w/ those 7800GT SLI on 3.4ghz it should be able to pass...

Push a bit more and get a super tweaked OS and you might break into the 22m range!

I didn't think he could do this high at first becauase of the MASSIVE difference between prime on two and 1m on one core, but it seems he was just warming up there :D That's a killer chip for sure, unfortunate that it cold bugs so bad.

Here are my 3DMark 05 and 06 scores. Looks like I need 512 GTX's to hang with the big boys or maybe watercooling and wait until G71's come out. Running the GT's at 489/1270 :rolleyes: with Artic Cooler 5's and Artic Silver.

After I ran these I think my LS decided to die on me. I don't know what happened, but my pc froze and I rebooted (thinking probably temperature related freeze or something), but as it posted the case speaker is like a solid beep and the pc starts to hang. So I hit the power supply switch, motherboard shuts off, LS still running so I pull the power cord and LS is still running :eek: .

I had to leave for dinner so I left thinking maybe the starting cap still had juice and would just shut off after a little while, but after I came back (several hours) it was still running. So I pulled my bottom GFX card to disconnect the USB cable going from chilly control (cc) to motherboard and as I pull out the GFX the LS shuts off. and starting messing with the cables on the cc and the LS starts up and motherboard posts, I load bios, but then it shuts off. I look at the LCD it's lit but blank. I try making sure the connections are secure and it kicks on again, but this time when it shut off I think something bad happened :( because now none of the lights on the cc board come on and the LCD won't light.

I have tried reseting the cc, but no luck. I guess I will have to run air now and get in touch w/ asetek in Denmark. After I see what they say I might just send it to Chilly.

Lets hope I can resurrect this thing I've only had it for a week. :slapass:

Ummmm...you pulled the plug on the Vapo and it continued to run for a couple of hours? lol...That's not possible in any way, shape, or form. You sure it was the plug from the phase unit you pulled and not the TV cord or something? :p:
Regardless, you've blown a fuse on the vapo. Go get yourself a few replacements and stick a new one in. Should be up and running right away.....

Check the vapo's fuse inside.

SO can you tell me how you managed to get 3.4ghz but was stuck at 3.2 beofre...What did you wind up changing?

Send it to my man chilly1 he will fix you up. They are swapped right now though might take some time :D Oh and get the compressor, evap, and chill control v2 changed while your at it!

Get yourself something along the lines of a Mach2 compressor. The vapo compressor has less capacity and is wimpy compared to the one used in the Mach. Temps on the compressor may not go as low as the vapo's (but not by much), but holding temps should definately be better.....

@ crash: I was just stuck at 3200 for stress prime, but once I got the time to fool with it some more and learned how to run dual SPi I was able to show higher numbers. I know I lowered overvolt one step down, but it really seemed to become more stable after I got some RAM settings from mzdcpa b/c everything I had tried would not go over 250 (though I am still limited to about 270). The thing that helped I think was drive strength 7/3 b/c all of my other settings were pretty similar to what he already had. And ozzimark's suggestions really helped my speed, but I was already stable.

But seems to be a volt (to help control temp) and drive strength issue. The chip just seemed to get better, but maybe it was me getting acclimated to using phase. I busy pulling apart this LS and trying to figure out why my Expert is acting up. First the USB ports don't want to work and now it won't post (hoping it's a ground to the mb tray) otherwise RMA and off to buy a new one or use this A8N32.

@ stephen: Yeah I would love some more stable temps under load. The LS starts cool then the temps skyrocket underload. This sure would make finding ideal settings easier. I'll PM Chilly to see what he recommends and how busy he is. Maybe he can bump me to the front of the line I mean I got WR's to break :D
