7800 GTX BIOS - 50 delta - mem timings

Here are two modifed BIOS files I am currently using. After much testing, I think it is ready to share. There are some basic mods, nothing radical, but the small tweaks have added up to improve card performance.

First, the rev4-500.rom has the default clock at 500 with a 50 Mhz delta. It is agressive, but great for water cooled cards that can handle it. The 50 MHz delta improves the vertex to shader/ROP fill rates at the higher clocks. The second file, rev4-473.rom is the same, but starts out at 473 for those cards that may not get to 500.

Second, the memory has simply been bumped to 1350 and 1300, respectively.

Third, the 3D throttle is at a whole multiple of 27 Mhz (432) and uses a 40 MHz delta versus the 35 stock. Transitions in and out of 3D are a little smoother, so that when you are close to the edge, you are less likely to experience any issues like a freeze.

Fourth, the memory timings have been tightened as such to improve memory bandwidth, but not affect OC ability. I saw around a 120 point increase on 3Dmark05 with this alone, clock for clock (results below).

All in all, this BIOS has improved my default driver settings (quality, application controlled for AA, AF) to 8900 in 3Dmark05 with my CPU at 2.5 Mhz. With a little tweaking on the driver settings (no LOD cheat), and a small OC bump to 2.65 GHz, I was able to get 9600. I am looking to exceed 10K with basic watercooling an x2 AMD CPU, but the CPU is a couple of weeks away.

It is built on the 5.70.02.11.XX BIOS build. I found it had a number of BIOS bugs resolved.

BTW, I have tested the BIOS file on an eVGA GTX KO, XFX GTX EE, ASUS TOP, ASUS GTX, BFG GTX OC, and a regular eVGA GTX. All showed improvements.

The files have been fully scanned for viruses, spyware, etc then zipped.

Good work, I remember the days when i modded my 5900 128meg's bios to claim first in 3dmarks 03 and 05. have you tested this bios with any games? or just 3d marks?

Wow if this could be done for a 7800 GT, it would be awesome. Could you release a BIOS that has the memory tweaks for the 7800gt? I realize a GT would not get the same overclock, but what a=bout the timing tweaks? Could a GT handle that?

ok seems like a bios my BFG 7800GTX Stock heatsink card would like as it does 528/1411 rivatuner on stock heatsink air for 9,542 3dmark05 right now

can i do the flash with batch files (helps on blind flashes)

i.e.

to backup file i put these in backup.bat on dos floppy

nvflash -b original.rom

to flash bios to modded put these into update.bat on dos floppy

nvflash -5 -6 modded.rom

to restore to original bios put this into restore.bat on dos floppy

nvflash -5 -6 original.rom

then boot to dos floppy and type

May I make a recommendation for the mem timings? I say set TRC to 24 (as it should be....tras + trp) as it will probably provide more stability....if it doesn't drop tras to 18 and set trc back to 25.

Makes sense. I will try those memory timings and modify as needed. I will also run some more tests to confirm stability. I will post back later. Good catch, BTW. It was at 18 -7, then I dropped it to 17 - 7 to test with success, but did not revisit TRC.

EDIT:Mem timings run and tested. Good results. Links updated. I also included a 473/1300 clock version since some people may not have a card that gets to 500/1350.

Looks fine, but command should be nvflash -j -4 -5 -6 Rev4-500.ROM to flash. And, I usually make a separate floppy with the file in an autoexec.bat file so it auto executes if you ever need to flash in the dark. Just have to hit "y" after you see the floppy light stop, wait for it to stop for a bit once more, and reboot back to stock. But, I just practiced that with my monitor off. Just in case ;)

I have flashed my card around 30 times with different BIOSs to test. Never had a failure yet. Pretty straight forward. But, you should always have your stock BIOS backed up.

I am working on that next. Same tweaks, just GT based. But, since I had the GTX, first hand testing help quite a bit.

So, GT BIOS with a delta (45 seems to be the right one), fan speed changes, memory timing mods, and anything else most card will handle. I will post back in a bit with the GT version.

Great work on the BIOS! But Ive a MSI 7800GTX what wont go higher as 470/680. Will this BIOS work on this card? Would I see any improvements because of the delta being only good at higher clocks? Ive still stock cooling, but not planning to change that (yet) :rolleyes:.

Yes, I posted a second version for those cards that are air cooled. Still a steep spec, but most should make it on stock cooling. I have tested this on a stock card.

BTW, here is a link to a survey I have been tracking on GTX OC levels, stock, mod, water, vapo, etc. I wanted to get plenty of stock results, and XS is not exactly the best place for that, is it ? :D

So, no go on 473. You are probably limited by the ROP/Shader component of your core. :(

At 473, there is a significant bump to 486 from 459. Stick with the stock BIOS. You will lose the benefits of the 50 Mhz delta, since the ratio between physics and fill needs to be maintained. So, at lower clocks (<473), the 50 Mhz delta advantage goes away. At 473, the vertex is at 523(<513), and the ROP/Shader at 486. This represents the next big bump in performance. 473 was kind of the minimum that would show an improvement with a bigger delta, anyway.

why dont you get a bios editor and change them your self it is VERY VERY easy to change clocks on a vid card bios...

I am struggling with the timings and teh setting of with my GTX's - I am unable to use the BIOS that you have posted here (get throttled results for some reason?) - although they sound sweet.

Checked my ram timings with Nibitor and it shows me as have set0 which are really tight (compared to set7) this limits my overlock to 1500mhz (with up to 2.8v in the ram)

If I stick with the BIOS I have now and try to add the memory timings myself - how do it? What tools will I need?

The OVP is probably kicking in. Here is the tweaked BIOS with a 2D, 3D and no throttle setting. It will take care of being stuck in throttle mode.

Haven't got my hands on a GT yet for testing.

But, I have been looking at Volt Modded changes to capitilize on the extra voltage. I have created two BIOS's based on the Samsung GDDR3 spec for 1.26 ns memory, since it is the same as the 1.4 and 1.6 ns GDDR3 with looser timings and more voltage (spec 2.0V versus 1.8V).

I tried both of these BIOS versions on my system. You get about 40 Mhz more on the memory without a volt mod. 80 Mhz with.

Here is the normal one, with 500/1350 (mem.rom). And the "extreme" one, the same with one 3D level and no temp monitoring (mem-2.rom). Both use a 50 MHz delta on full 3D.

Both are based on the latest build of the nVidia BIOS, 5.70.02.16.XX.

Edit: Remember, use these if you have volt modded the card. Otherwise, you will lose performance!

Alright, I ran the new BIOS you uploaded--DEFINITELY good for mem. I got 45MHz extra (no vmods). My core doesn't like +50 delta though (lowered OC by 10MHz, I'm gonna play with one and make a +30 BIOS for myself--I have a feeling my ROP/Shader can go up but my geom can't). What's odd is that I can go an extra 20MHz on the core or so before I get artifacts :stick:

Do you know how nV made the gains? Simply voltage?

well, the new mem-bios gets me from 1370 to 1390 artifact free.
but compared to rev4-500 its way slower. i loose like 600 3dmarks in 05 at the same clocks so imo its not worth it

Hmmm....I noticed it was slower in 03 as well and thought I did something better last time (these runs were completely untweaked). But I think I'll try rev4-500 and take my lowered mem clocks again (and mod it for a +30 delta for my own uses).

It WILL be slower under 1400 MHz on the memory. You need at least 2.0 V into the RAM to take adavantage of the extra RAM headroom. I would not use this on anything that is not volt modded. The slower latencies will hurt performance except at the highest frequencies.

I would stick with the original versions I made with tighter timings. With those, I can easily get 9600 with a single GTX.

I scored 31000 with my x2 +3800 @ 2900 and 7800gtx sli setup and after upping the fsb to reach 3000 I can't score over 21000. I score higher in 1st test but alot worse in the other 3. Rivatuner works one minute and the next it won't allow me to oc. I dropped the fsb back down and reinstalled the vid drivers and now it black screens when launching 03. I think either coolbits or rivatuner is leaving some traces behind that are borking the drivers but I am uncertain. I do have my chiller sealed now and have both gpu's setting at -21, and monitoring with rivatuner the clocks don't throttle. Sorry for the incohesive babble but it is late and I am near to slipping into deep sleep. Any ideas?

It wont even work right, the RAM timings would be all ****ed up, not to mention the clock speeds would not let the card boot. You would have to reflash it or just have a pretty paper weight.

My RAM can do 1500MHz fine with the old BIOSs, no vmod....it's still slower, but I think it's because the my core simply can't go as high with the +50 delta (well, I KNOW it can't), gotta flash to my own +30 BIOS when I get the chance.

Well, since I have not had my hands on a GT, the process of getting a BIOS tested is a little slower. But, the 20 MHz delta and better memory timings I have tested have shown positive (300 points in 3D05) improvement. Look here Monday night for a GT BIOS. :D

The 512 cards are a little different than the 256 MB versions. I have been baselining the cards, and the have a strange scaling pattern. But, testing the 40 MHz delta BIOS right now.

Here is the GT BIOS build. The 3D fan mode is 100% while in 3D and 40% while in 2D. The card cools down at idle since it drops back to 1.2V from 1.4V and uses a 275 clock in 2D mode (like the GTX). Good for bench runs near or at limit. ROP/Shader jumps occur at 13.5 MHz, so the BIOS has a 20 MHz delta (1.5x of oscillation) over the 450 root clock. Since most cores are limited by the ROP/Shader cores, this helps the card reach a little further as you approach the card limits.

Memory timings have been adjusted to Samsung spec to allow higher clocking on the memory. Default speed is 1050.

Initial results look good from the few volunteers I have used to test the BIOS revs. This one is built upon the reference nVidia BIOS.

Anyone using this BIOS, please report back any results, so I can improve it if needed. So far, it has worked very well on the GT cards I have tested.

So, 450/1050 with a 20 delta, 100% fan 3D, and slightly looser memory timings. Rev3-450.rom.

1700 MHz!! Holy smokin' RAM bits, Batman. Try the GDDR3 1.4 ns timings first then the 1.1/1.2 ns. All the faster GDDR3 samples are simply highly tolerant versions with looser timings which happen to endure much higher clocking. Looks like you are doing close to 512 spec!

Great bios

Seems to run sweet on my GTX which is not a great over clocker. It gave me a few hundred more on 3dm 05. to 8570. I adjusted it to 473, 1250 with the 50 delta. Thanks for doing all the hard work.

Well, I have these cards in SLI, and I am CPU bound, so I am moving to a single card to validate the delta performance versus no delta for a single card. So, I will be working on that this evening, so I should have a Rev 1 BIOS for the weekend.

So, the experiment is a 50 MHz delta and a BIOS using actual timing spec on the GDDR3 1.1 ns. Looks like nVidia tightened the memory timings from spec, which would explain the 1700 MHz stock memory clock versus the Smasung spec of 1800. As far as I can gather, it appears that moving from 1700 to 1800 exceeds what the cores can process, so it really does not help to increase that much. I am going to focus on the core, and try to get another 40 to 50 MHz over the normal vertex threshold of 620 Mhz.

ok heavy h20 i see a problem here!! all 7800gt cards ive seen use non samsung memory! well mine and my friends cards use infenion 2.0ns memory.
you state that the timings have been tweakerd per samsung specifications but would this work on my card??? im gonna wait before i try this for you to respond so i hope you can tell me soon hehe :D

Actually, the specs are the same within the BIOS. There are two timing sets. One for Samsung and one for Infineon. Both are modded to loosen the timings a little to allow better memory clocking.

Hi all. So I flashed your BIOs Heavy H2O. First I tried rev4-500, but I had artefacts :( So I modifided your BIOS on 490/1375. But I have water cooling on my Asus EN7800GTX and I want to 500/1400 with no artefacst :D Is there any way, can somebody help me?

try playing some games jirii and if you cannot notice the artifacts then it is good enough imo
just one pixel discolored one every minute or so isnt enough to say that speed is no good for gaming i think
just play your favorite games for 8 plus hours heheh thats a fun test!!! :)

i tried out the 7800gt BIOS - made no difference to my vram at all, and even though i got the core a bit higher, didn't help my score much.

However, im gonna do the voltmod on tht BIOS, since that normally gains me another 20-30mhz, and see if that helps at all.

hey heavyh20 is there anyway i can lower the mem timings for my 7800gt without messing up the card or make it unbootable? some way to try it temporarily without flashing?. my memory seems stuck at 1300mhz and more volts or looser timings will not let it oc much further to be worth it so i want to try to tighten the timings for more performance but i dont want to ruin the card can you help by teling me what timings i can reduce below stock or tell me how i can test this temporarily before flashing please! hehe thanks for all th help so far btw

I just had to flash in the dark... from 500 to 473. :) my new gtx that came with a copper heatsink and cod2 couldn't handle it. That was some scary :banana::banana::banana::banana:...

Now I'm running it at about 530/1350.
Please have you a good firmware mod with some tweaks for it?
I would like to have maximum performance if possible at least at 520/1330 or more (550/1400) 50mhz delta,little low times and more voltage.Can you help me?

Flashed the bios of my 2 7800GTX
I changed the clocks of this bios to 486/1350 (default TOP speeds)

Flashing the 2nd card gave me errors, afterward it was because with flashing both cards get same ID, gave both another ID solved this problem and SLI runs ok.

Wondering why everyone has such good gains in 3dmark ?
I gained 35 marks in 3dmark06 and 10 marks in 3dmark05
So this memtimings dont do much, delta was at 50 before flash so theres no gain neither.
Isnt everybody gaining because the clocks were higher than at stock speeds?

I would like to support FireDragon in his quote.
A Bios change should not be seen as some magic snake oil.
It it extremely easy to do it yourself, and more importantly, you understand much better what has been done.

There are a few areas where modification for 7800GTX and 7800GT boards could make sense.
1) Clock settings for Core and Memory. This can also be done (on the fly) with Coolbits or RivaTuner. You do not need another Bios when looking for another clock speed.
Of course if you want, you can also change your clock settings in Bios, but there´s no need and no advantage as far as I can see.
2) Delta Geometric Clock. Can be done by just entering the number in Nibitor, somewhere between 0 and 60, save it and flash it and that´s it.
Like HeavyH20 did, see what it brings to your system when you change it.
It depends on several unpredictable factors. Many threads has been spent on this issue.
3) The 3D Core Voltage from 1.4 to 1.5 Volt. Some but not all GT boards support this feature. Just change the relevant Vid with Nibitor and voila.
Dr Leary pointed out this issue.
4) Memory timing. Some boards have dead wrong timing figures, and should be adjusted to manufacturers specs. Let Nibitor find the right timingset and the related timingfigures that are used for your board.
After that has been checked it may be worth trying with small steps what happens to your max achievable Mem speed and to your Benchmark scores if the the timing is made tighter, or more relaxed. This all depends largely on things like Vmodding or not and on the initial max Mhz values of the Ram.
To change this is again as easy as reading a newspaper and can be done with Nibitor. When you make the timing too tight, and when the Mem Clock has been set to a high value in BIOS, you may have the risk that the board does not function anymore. That´s why it is good to have a relaxed default timing as a guarantee that the board will always run at startup.

That leaves untouched what a great job HeavyH20 did in evaluating to such detail what influence each and every parameter could give you.
He made available all specificic details, so let´s use this to our benefit.

Could you please explain that? How do you give cards different ID's? I had a problem running in sli and both cards worked fine. It was on a NF4 Ultra DR with a damaged PCIE slot, so I always thought that was the issue.

I would like to use the evga ko rev 4 bios but i have no clue on how to install that bios, so i was wondering if somebody could please tell me how to install it and also will this gve me much of a peformance gain in games like hl2, fear and quake 4.

you can either boot into dos with a floppy or if no floppy drive, use nero etc to make a bootable cd. on that floppy,cd or on a FAT partiton of the drive copy the necessary things such as the rev4-500.rom file, Nvflash.exe and cwsdpmi available from

(i.e. unzip this file).
once booted into DOS type:

nvflash -4 -5 -6 rev4-500.rom
hit y for yes then when it says its done, reboot into windows and you now have new BIOS installed.

hope this makes sense.

and yes you should see a gain.

just put the files on the bootable cd or floppy if your drive is only ntfs as it cant be read from DOS.
to backup the bios just type: nvflash -b backup.rom
but obviously this will have to be onto a floppy.

Read the bios with nibitor, look for vendor and device ID
These should be two different codes (numbers and letters)
Write them down and change the modded bios with these values (via nibitor)
If these are two identical codes change a letter to get two different ID's.

I just wanted to say "thank you" to HeavyH20 and the rest of the guys here. . . . I was able to understand how the 7800GTX works a lot better through this thread . . .

I went ahead and modded my own BIOS and managed to hit 10,510 in 3DMark05. . . .

hey there guys, first time posting but great forums :D let me get to the point. i have a 7800gtx from msi, i read from a post here that one of the bios is for volt modded cards, so im guessing that the bios posted on the first page will lower my performance slightly? at the moment, my card is overclocked to 526/1357 on stock cooling with as5 only for benching and winter temps (will replace stock cooling soon). so would it be worth trying out? and how would one create a blind flash?
