Leadtek 6800LE inbound @ $149

I just couldn't resist. Newegg dropped the price on it...
In my 24/7 Dothan rig I've been running an x700pro for a couple weeks, and it's "acceptable", but BARELY. My games are a BIT slow. So the 6800LE is CHEAPER than teh x700pro series... and pretty much EVERYONE says 12 pipes is EASY and most say the Leadtek gives up the last 4 to make 16 pipes.

$149, heck WHAT costs $149? x600? Maybe a 9800xt?

So how do you do the "unlocking"?? What is the specific option inside RivaTuner?? How many pipes/ps are there in total??

I've ordered myself a 6800LE, which should be here tomorrow. Mine is an Aopen card and not the Leadtek tho. There is some info about unlocking the locked pipes and shaders here

Good luck with that. Took me 2.85ghz clawhammer power with LoD tweaks, 16 pipes, 6 shaders, and 450/950 clocks for 13.5k on my 6800nu... I know your dothan is FAST but I'm not sure how fast it will be when you're GPU bottlenecked...

my 6800 Asus was just totally unfair to the 6800 league.
those things are just death machines for killing other 6800 NU's, if your a benchmarker, it's just not fair, haha...
but, asus calls it a NU, so I won't argue with them.

however, I had 4 other 6800's before it.
the first one I had was doing 480/875 on water.
it got 12,400 back when 10,000 from those, was considerd hard, haha...
now Nvidias drivers are so ridiculous that one driver will get you a 1,000 point boost, for no obvious reason...
so my little 128 meg scores are long gone.
but the asus one still remains the top for the 2003 mark.
15,100 I believe...

that card, with a dothan, and dry ice...
16,000 would almost be too easy.
especially with all these new questionable drivers, from Nvidia lately that give the huge score boosts.

I think you can hit 14K rather easy, with alittle effort.

I got the order in before noon, and that usually means newegg will ship the same day, but since it's a Monday, they may be overloaded from weekend orders... so I'll have it by Wed. at the latest.

The Leadtek 6800LE uses a bit thinner HS than their 6800NU and GT/Ultra HS's...

then that will itch away in his psyche.
he will try to sleep.
but that itch won't go away.
he will think "ok, I'll just reformat, and strip all the extra junk outta bios, and run my OS in skeleton mode, then go to sleep"
it will work... but it won't stop.
by friday morning, he will be staring at the ORB, looking at 6800 scores, getting pissed cause he cant figure out if hes competing against SLI scores or not. so he will think... OK, I need some dry ice.
by then, he won't remember what BF2 is...
he will go through his day, doing whatever, he's suppose to do.
but in the back of his mind, whenever he's got 3 seconds alone, he will be doing math, thinking, "ok if I run 13x250, that would help me in GT1 and GT3, and if I switch to the latest Beta driver, that will help me... now I'll need about an hour to test LOD for the best settings..."

it won't really end.

Also a suggestion is use 71.89 drivers because they give the best performance. They keep the temps down, they let you overclock the most, and are the most stable. You can try 77.72, but they are the assiest drivers i have ever used.

I had the GT version and the fan really sucked on it, wonder if the LE uses a more powerful fan =P

I think the LE's have been 149 for awhile now though, I remember Tigerdirect had them for 119 awhile ago

Just reworked my Leadtek 6800nu. The backside piece is just a fancy backing plate - mostly
for asthetic purposes. If you think about it, many 6800 cards only have a plastic
backing plate there.

There isn't much too cool back there with the memory chips on the underside anyway.
Certainly nothing to mount a heatsink on. My card just had thick pads between the
back piece & card.

Now, the underside is another matter. The sink is stamped with raised pads to make
direct contact with the memory chips. Many other 6800 I've seen in the forums only
have a flat sink with thick pads similar to what's on the back of this one.

Oh, should also note that some have told me their Leadtek 6800nu did NOT have
the raised areas for the RAM. So there may be a couple versions of this card going around.

BTW ... was able to drop my GPU load temp by about 27c, and the Ceramique paste
hasn't broken in yet.

For some reason Leadtek saw fit to apply a brushed finish to the entire
surface. Not only that, the GPU contact patch was fairly warped as well. Likely
from the production process when the fan hole and RAM pads were stamped.

P.S. - taking out that fan screen will help quiet the fan, and probably make it run a little cooler too.

I got my 6800LE today, and its modded successfully to 16 pipes and 6 vertex shaders :woot: Hopefully when I get better cooling and some volt mods on this thing, so I can get the clocks up a bit. It will only run 345/950. Hopefully I can get it close to stock GT clocks.

But if i had a dothan, my gt1 would be a mile higher. If i had a Lanparty rather than an nf7, my fsb would be higher, also getting a slighly higher gt1. If i had a soldering iron, i could voltmod and really overclock this card.

I must recommend trying out various BIOS's, one i tried in particular had slightly looser memory timings. This let me take my memory from 890mhz (reasonable) to 990mhz (V. good for ddr1). Stable at 880.

nf7 and lanparty can do same fsb, just need the right bios.

what vgpu on that for 430:983?

1.4v, in the BIOS.

im using mantarays xt d26, which is purportedly the best. 235mhz is still the highest i can reach, on a cold day. Once i got to 265, in midwinter, with ambient of about 5c, but i've never been able to repeat since. Had nearly 4,000 mb/s bandwidth in sandra....:).

What Bios do you recommend?

I suspect replacing the stock nb HSF might be helpful. I guess i'll order one, and see what i can do.

FIRST off, look at the BLING!!! That back plate (and that is the side visible in a case) is a shiny "finished" copper block and looks REALLY sweet, like an aftermarket cooler!

The fan looks pathetically WEAK, though... now I know why some guys do the mod to the stock cooler!!

great mod... mine is the exact same version as yours.I won't be quite so energetic as you, I'll just upgrade the TIM and remove the fan grill. It would be nice to mount a fanto the outside of the plastic, blowing "in" after removing stock fan.

Sweeet! tell us how it goes please modding it, 139 is fluggin tempting. I was also very impressed with the looks with my Leadtek GT's HSF but it seemed like the fan was pathetic so the whole copper thing got really hot sometimes, even with good airflow! Maybe mine had a dud fan? But please tell how she mods :D

Thanx. Must admit that I almost didn't do the lapp job when I saw the raised
RAM pads. But I decided it would be worth the effort. It's definitely not for
the novice though.

A bigger fan would be nice. Just removing that silly mesh grill made a noticable
drop in noise levels. And probably improved cooling slightly as well.

I don't think so. The 6800GT and Ultra employ DDR3 RAM where the NU and LE use DDR1.

You might want to raise the voltage in the BIOS, since it's likely to be starved of it. The 6800LE starts at 1.1v iirc, raise it to 1.2v or 1.3v.

Presumably you know how to use nibitor, and nvflash?

So did everything work perfectly with the 16 pipes? Seems like many ppl are getting minor graphical errors with all 16. One thing though, these cards are a sweet deal, even with 'only' 12 pipes.....its evident from the amount of interest this thread has generated.

I had to raise my volts at 380 or so to keep clocking further, so 375 isn't unreasonable. And the sudden drop in price means these should be heavily wanted, since they are now £90 in the UK. That's the same price as a 9800 pro, but when modded, overclocked, etc, WAY faster.

Yeah, everything's fine at 16x6... I played BF2 for a half hour and UT2k4 for about 15 minutes... this Leadtek is a great find. If newegg drops the price to $139 again, I'm gonna' buy another for my office rig!

I paid $190 for my LE and that was a refurb. It looks like these also come with a much better heatsink than the one I bought.

Well ended the first night less than 50 points from 13K... that's pretty decent.
What a great card for the $$ maxes out at 378/851 with untouched hs/f and default TIM. Should get 13K with a few tweaks... I had a 417 GT1 earlier in the night :(

I'm a bit worried about this card now, today I try playinf BF2 and about 5 minutes into playing it shuts the whole pc OFF, or kicks me to desktop. This is even with no OC!!
Yesterday I was playing BF2 for 1+ hour at 350/800....

the only time i heard there is a problem on these is when it doesnt work right at stock, when you first get it.
it could be a pipleine problem though, try disabling the ones you enabled.

Well, maybe it's just BF2 online being buggy. I just finished playing an hour and it's fine... just the occasional "flickering" texture, which may be the game, too...

i had an aopen which only did some shaders wrong but its notsafe to run it like that if you see any problems in common benches with 16x6 you shouldnt run it for 24/7 like that. for benching its ok.

The stock Leadtek cooler is good, but the NV 5 is certainly better. Thinking about getting one myself.

Yeah, it's fine... just on a FEW items in BF3 they have weired colored "aura's" around them. The M60 gun has a blue flickering on it and the parachuted SUPPLY boxes that fall always FLICKER... I'm thinking Driver/Game bug.

Yeah, just played 1/2 hour of UT2K4 at HIGHEST SETTINGS @ 1280 x 1024 and it looks AWESOME... perfect in every way.

It must just be BF2... and it's probably bug and or driver related issues.

There is another cheap ($140 I think) 6800 LE at ZZF. That one is a Chaintech so it isn't just Leadtek selling them cheap.

I had that flickering thing on boxes in CS:S when I opened the pipes on my old BFG 6800OC. The pipes were bad because it didn't do that when the pipes were closed. Another thing that had a lot of abnormalities for me was the second test in 3dmark05 I think, it was the one with the firefly at night.

I bought one of those Chaintech 6800LEs a couple months ago. Very cheap aluminum heatsink. A very big step down from the standard 6800 series cooler. Probably better to go with the Leadtech.

My Leadtek 6800nu unlocked successfully, kind of. I get no artifacts in games or
3dMark but it keeps defaulting back to stock GPU speed. Which I've read over
at Guru3d is a sign of bad pipes.

Sometimes I score just under 11,000, others 7,800. And I can see my GPU clock dropping
in the HW monitor. :(

Well I figured out exactly what the deal is with my card.
It is 16+6 3DMark stable and game-stable EXCEPT for HIGH stress games like BF2. In BF2 I have to disable quad 2 and run 12+6 to be artie free...
Which actually isn't so bad... about 800 points LESS in '03 with 12+6.

Does anyone know what the stock Vgpu is on these cards? I've got 2 possible voltages - 1.35v and 1.12v. I think the 1.35v is Vref/Vtt, as it is 1/2 of Vdd (2.70v). The 1.12v voltage changes when I change the Vgpu mod I've got on the card (I've only taken it up to 1.14v as I'm not 100% sure that I'm adjusting the Vgpu). The 1.12v voltage is at the Vgpu read point that most modding guides for the card use, but it seems too low to me.

Also, I thought that the 6800 series of cards were supposed to change their Vgpu depending on if they are in 2d/3d mode, but neither of the voltages change.

I'm pretty sure they run 1.3V load 1.1V idle 2d... Weird they don't change.

I assume that the 1.12v is the Vgpu then. I might try to do a BIOS mod on the card to see if that voltage changes then. If my Vgpu is really at 1.12v, it could explain why I'm getting somewhat crappy GPU clocks compared to other cards (I can only do 345 benchable, whereas some are hitting 400+).

jesus, i thought 875 ram clocks was good... What ICs do you people have that can pull 990? Is that with a vram mod and/or looser timings in BIOS?

It looks like Aopen are under-volting the Gpu's on their 6800LE's to 1.1v. At 1.180v (0.12v under stock 6800 voltage) I can hit 355mhz. I don't want to put much more voltage than that through it on the pathetic stock heat sink thats on there atm tho.

Edit: I just checked the BIOS, and it looks like it is set to give 1.1v for the 3d voltage :eek:

if the drivers arent loaded i think i also get 1,12 (LE and GT no matter) and with drivers loaded it should be 1,22/1,23V in 2Dmode in 3Dmode you also got other Volts.....

they must chanfe if they doesnt maybe they are set to the same? cant be or you have got the false reading points plz dont hesitate to post a pic of the card.

Its ok, I've got it sorted :) . For some reason, Aopen have set the 3d voltage to 1.1v, which is why I wasn't seeing a change in voltage between 2d and 3d modes. I've managed to increase the 3d voltage to 1.2v by modding the BIOS.

I've taken the voltage back down to 1.1v for now, until I get some better cooling sorted for this card. I'm hoping for at least 400mhz out of the GPU - it appears to be benchable at 370 with 1.190v, although I'm having some problems running at that speed on GT1 in '03, but hopefully cooling will solve that :)

would it be worth it to flash this card with a different bios, like a regular 6800 or 6800GT?

and should i be worried if i ordered one from newegg yesterday at exactly this time and they havent shipped it out yet? all my other stuff i have ordered from them usaully ship out within a day. grrr, i want my new card :mad:

about 20 3D benchies and 10 hours of gaming, here's the BOTTOM LINE

MY 6800LE unlocked fully to 16+6 and was 3d stable at about 380/860... with NO artifacts.

When playing "lower" end games like UT2k4 I can play maxed settings at 16+6...
Playing BF2 I get "slight" texture flickering artifacts on some objects and the occasional instability.

I have 100% BF2 stability at 12+6, 350/800.

Not bad... the 4 pipes were worth about 800 points in '03

that is not an 6800 le... it's a 6800 nu with 12 pipes... i've one bought 2 months ago

In 16+6, no... that's bout it, maybe 385/875 with cooler air (you're in SoCal, you know what I mean) but that's about it. Maybe a little volts and replacing TIM will help her out :D

Hah, good deal on that puppy... kindof makes me wish I woulda just went with a nu rather than dropping 225 on this 6800gt used. it's the bfg with the old standard cooler, which definately needs replacement for better clocks. If you break 14k 03' before I do, I'm snapping ;) :toast:

Been benching '05... and it reaches up and grabs the sack of this little GPU and TWISTS, lol... I'm only able to run 12 pipes in '05. Now running 12 pipes is nice, because my clocks go up to 400/900. But the Dothan power doesn't help me there, nearly a full 1K behind my x800xl. But it's 800 points higher than the x700pro!!

I had about 11k with AMD XP @ 200*11,5, and LE @ 420/920.
I just wanna see the big difference with the P-M.

I had a MSI 6800 when it first came out. The first was doa and the second was impossible to run 16/6 no matter the cooling. Nice to see the newer model @ 16/6 :)

Only 800 points? Less significant than I thought.
One test after the unlock showed a 1,400 point improvement (11,200) but the
GPU clock has been flipping more often since & my scores are lower as a result.
Guess I'll have to relock and just settle for the extra shader.
Seems others always have better at getting unlockable cards than I.

yeah actually 800 points does seem a bit low.

When i was at 430/980, at 12/5 i got 11,500, at 16/6 i get 12,800, so thats a 1300 point increase. And im seriously held back by my axp as well.

I mean the highest gt1 i can managed is 270fps. If i could hit 410 like charlie, well, i reckon id easily break 13k.

which is better? the LE or the 6800 ?
