I've just purchased an X99 Deluxe and a 5960x, have it water cooled with a 3x120 rad, XSPC Raystorm block, and a D5 pump. Temps stay below TjMax so everything appears ok. However, I've noticed something strange when under load, while stock or overclocked, CPUZ reports the chip drawing significantly higher voltage than what is set in the BIOS when running Prime 95 or Intel Burn Test. At stock the chip may want up to 1.1 volts according to CPUZ under these conditions and @ 4.5GHz and 1.3V with the voltage set mnanually in the BIOS it shoots as high as 1.49V. Something's not right here. The only legitimate reason I can think of for this to happen is if it's specific to an AVX workload, which may be the case with the testing tools I've mentioned. However, my previous ROG boards never did this with Haswell or Ivy Bridge. I've updated the BIOS to the latest beta version available on the support site, 0701 dated 8/29/14. What I'm wondering is the following:
1) is this normal/can this behavior be reproduced by others?
2) is there a setting which controls this behavior? - again, voltage is set manually (not using adaptive or offset)
Edit: I've just run the standard OCCT test (not the Linpack test) which to my understanding should not use AVX and I see the exact same voltage spike. Either CPUZ is wrong, the sensor is damaged, or there's a BIOS setting that affects this behavior.
Try disabling LLC and see if that changes the readings CPU-Z is giving you. Also, I'm guessing this isn't the case, but you haven't accidentally switched the CPU overvolt jumper on the bottom right of the board, have you (see eg. page 1-20 of your manual)?
Have the same setup (5960X and X99 Deluxe) on its way to me, should be arriving late this week, so will be able to comment if I see the same behaviour then.
Thanks for the suggestions, the BIOS layout is very different compared to the ROG boards I'm used to so I knew I was missing something. I'll check LLC and the board switch you mentioned here in a bit and report back.Quote:

Interesting. Presuming accurate reporting, a 1.3V vs 1.5V core voltage should produce significantly different behaviour. Have you noticed any commensurate changes to temps or stability since changing LLC from auto? I'm wondering whether this has actually 'done' anything or has just resulted in CPU-Z giving a more accurate read.Quote:

Example: in XTU you can set core speeds 0/1 4400 and 2/3 at 4200, meaning the first two cores are set to 4.4Ghz and the last two cores are set to 4.2Ghz, I hope this make sense. You would think that two cores could lock down to 4.4Ghz but they don't, they run at the lower speed set. This holds true if you try with mobiles, Sandy, Ivy and Haswell. AMD got this right and you can lock the cores at x speed.
Where this helps me and I wish this worked. I want to leave 3 cores down at low Mhz and force core 0 to max Mhz. I then lock affinity down for my benchmark to that one core. This does not work on Intel.

Memory overclocking is working as intended and the R5E gets the most out of DDR4 so far, I say this because my other board has issues that I am sure will be fixed with BIOS updates.
My vcore is very stable, I have not seen the problem experienced on Deluxe.

How controlled are the voltage transients above set VCore during load fluctuations when LLC is enabled to give little/no droop under load? I don't mean by looking at CPUZ, I mean true assessment with a high polling rate DMM or scope. Old boards would spike well over set vcore during load fluctuations (heavy to light load specifically) - Raja can you comment on the X99 VRM in this regard?

Is anyone with an X99 Deluxe running SLi and Surround? My 680s were running fine pushing 3 1920x1080 screens in 2D Surround on my old X79 board, but the same cards using the same drivers on a fresh install of 8.1 refuse to enable Surround in the nVidia control panel on the new setup - seems to want the displays connected to a single card only:

Tested a retail 5820K, and all I can say is avoid batch 3422B711 like the plague.
5.2 with even as high as 1.7v was not stable, so kept things at 5Ghz to see efficiency on Haswell E, and for XTU it did not disappoint :)

I noticed in the datasheet for these chips, the "Absolute Maximums" does not include a value for vCore, only Vin to the IVR. Do you have any information on where these chips will start seeing near immediate damage to the silicon even with cooling capable of keeping the chip below TjMax?
I.E. For the Gulftowns it was listed as 1.55v

Have ordered an Asus Rampage V Extreme and 5960 X and been reading my current Asus Xonar Essence STX wont work on the board? Only other card I'll be using is a single EVGA GTX 780 SC, do not want to use onboard sound, so are there any workaround for the Xonar Essence STX on this board or can anyone recommend a high end sound card that will work on the board?

Uh oh - my X99 Deluxe is refusing to boot. Was running XTU's inbuilt stress test at 4.5 core, 4.2 uncore, 1.3V CPU 1.3V cache and machine suddenly shut down. RAM not yet touched. Tried rebooting and machine flicks on for a microsecond before the an audible OCP 'click' from the PSU.
Tried pulling the PSU cable and letting caps discharge for about 15min, tried booting again and machine will power on and stay on but noone's home - none of the POST debug LEDs are lighting and the board is stuck on POST code '00'. Have tried clearing CMOS several times and removing everything but CPU, RAM and one GPU with no change.
Any ideas folks?
"00" is usually cpu initialization error so possibly a dead cpu? Do you have another board to try the cpu in and vice versa for another cpu to try in the same board maybe?Quote:

EDIT: Hmm. With the CPU removed mobo powers up and while still showing error code '00', the CPU POST LED lights up. With the CPU installed the board powers up and shows error code '00', but the CPU POST LED does not light up. The board therefore appears to be at least functional enough to know whether there's a CPU installed.
Raja, opinion? More likely to be dead CPU or motherboard? I can't see or smell any burnt components, but as I'm not a review site I don't want to go pulling off heatsinks and lose warranty.

Have one guy on ROG that killed his 5960X while running 1.47 Vcore and 2.2VCCIN on chilled water. Not sure what he was running yet. Board was fine.

Depends how much current xtu pulls. I've seen prime95 28.5 break 40 amps with 1.30vcore at 4.45ghz on my clamp meter. There are psus out there that will trip ocp at 30 amps.Quote:

The point raised above re the EPS connectors is an interesting one - I was surprised that given the amount of times overclocking was mentioned on the mobo box only one EPS connector was present, given that all of the high-end boards I saw on the X79 chipset seemed to feature two as a matter of course and power consumption (particularly with native 8-core parts) hasn't dropped hugely since Ivy Bridge.

Heard a rumour that the Rampage V Extreme is getting a whole new board revision soon, any truth in this Raja? possibly you wont be able to comment because of NDA if true, do seem to be more than the usual problems from a brand new board that maybe BIOS updates cant fix properly? sure have been a lot of BIOS updates since board was released.
For sure they are in short supply in UK, put in my order to Scan over a week ago, they keep telling me tomorrow and now its status is saying waiting for an ETA, same for X-99 Deluxe.
I just wish I knew when I will get my board I've paid for.

I have 2 retail R5E boards here and both have no issues at all. Non stop testings and benchings with cold/air/h20 for the past 2+ weeks. Just make sure you get good PSU that can hold the load of your new X99 platform.Quote:

You aren't alone my friend. I own the X99 Deluxe and Xonar Essence STX, no sound at all. Not with official drivers nor the hacked UNi Xonar. People suggested changing Gen version on the port, however that didn't help. I read about this issue quite a few times now, the fact that even the Asus representative sort-of shrugs it off worries me. Starting to think I should have gone with MSi after all, because the onboard sound is dreadful.Quote:
