Blunt talk, I tried to send out a mass email last Sat and we ran into "issues" with doing so..
I tried and tried but something with the new forum software wasn't playing well with me.
Got Charles involved and he had issues also.
I'm stuck for a solution but the hell with it

I lost 8 when I tried to reinstall Linux. :( Hope to get it sorted tonight.
Already running full bore and new system won't be done till December :( but lets have at it. Maybe try and get a few other family computers involved.

Swapped memory and the hdd for ssd. Linux kept locking up during install or not even getting as far where I was able to start installing. Tried many different versions. Even Gparted locked up every time I tried to make a partition.
Lost two Win7 installs in the prosess, but who needs those on a cruncher. :D
In the end it was as simple as loading the BOIS default and starting over. Cruncher is back up on Mint 13 and it kept the same host id as it had before on Ubuntu.
Damn shame HP don't have a bunch of cloud instances they want testing under load. :(

Remember folks, it takes a couple of days for machines to hit their max scoring potential, so if you want to hit the ground running on day one you might consider taking your machines out of "maintenance mode" (ie turn them on) now.
Just out of curiousity, has anyone tried crunching in a Virtual Machine or Machine(s)?
The reason I ask is that I got another 8Gb of RAM for one of my rigs recently, so I've got enough(16Gb DDR2 667Mhz ECC FB RAM) for at least one VM if its feasible and worth the effort.
My opinion is that your overall performance will suffer, since you still only have fixed processor resources and WCG tasks are processor bound for the most part. Some folk set up RAM drives for crunching, which I believe does improve performance, especially if you use mechanical hard drives and are running multiple CEP2 units.
So can you setup the RAMdisk/drive to run separately from the other cores in the system, essentially adding X CEP2 WU's to 2-N cores?Quote:

For those who are willing to go through a little bit of setup, Windows Azure does have a 30day, 200$ trial, all it takes (along with normal registration stuff) is a phone number and a credit card number (Will not be billed) to verify you're not a bot. It takes a couple of hours for your account to get set up, but after everything is working you can spin up a few VMs and install BOINC on them. (Not sure how long the 200$ credit will last running large VMs though)
How are macs doing comparatively? I might be able to get a few macbooks.

Lots of team members dropped out of crunching at the end of the HCC project, and I think many did this because their primary goal is to contribute to cancer reseach rather than other projects. The end of a GPU project was probably a factor in some cases too.
I think a lot of those guys would come back for a new cancer project, even if it's CPU only.
How do we let them know in time for some SC Week action?

Am trying to get a new machine up - 2600K in MSI Z68A-GD65G3.
HDD has Win7-x64, trying to set up dual-boot with Debian 7.2. What a nightmare.
No wonder Linux has gone nowhere. :mad:

You do know that Debian is considered a "reference" distro, right? Not really for serious use and quite flakey but handy for building something else from (no, I'm not recommending Ubuntu for the desktop either). Mint is about the most friendly distro I'm aware of right now. The installer is also quite simple to use.
As far as going backwards ... :ROTF:
I just discovered that Linux is the OS of choice for the GoPro sports action cameras. Desktop computers really are the only place that Linux doesn't hold market dominance.

The *new* 2600K is online at stock clocks (3.5G w. turbo) crunching under W7-x64 for now, and it got me the burnt slice of pie today.
Discovered I had hardware instability, fixed that. Installed Deb 7.0.0 no probs, configured GRUB to autoboot Windows loader in case of powerfail, & put it on line, which is how it must stay til SC Week is over.

Id love to donate some resources, but I've been folding with them ( for a couple teams) id lundrog. Can wcg utilize gpu's as well as folding can? Where can I read about active programs that are using resources ? A year ago I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetics , @ 32, so I have been trying to help resource in that or similar fields when not gaming. That and I lost my grandmother to cancer at 16, and recently my aunt.

Currently WCG is cpu only. The GPU task completed earlier this year.
On a positive note, the new cancer project MCM1 is just a few days old.

I tried setting up some Virtual Crunchers on Windows Azure, but I had problems accessing them and then seizing root. I will try another stab at it after I get the DL380 up and going.
