A while back ASUS asked me for motherboard input for future bulldozer boards. When a company asks for input you have to pick your battles wisely as they are more inclined to make sensible changes than drastic changes.

Knowing the power demands thuban had over deneb and the variance between wattage and amperage draw from deneb to thuban the first thing that I felt needed adressing knowing we would be seeing 2 cores added again is more input power.

Asus delivered in this respect, however the location of the of the extra 4 pin might have not been the best choice.

Why not the best location? Here's a shot of a 790 board in a worst case scenario benched for an obscene amount of hours non stop. As you see that general area is ICE/WATER.

Moving along the next thing that was logical to ask for was practical and effective heatsinks.

The discussion of lucid was also brought to the table It's pros and cons ( of which there are many on lucids end ) in the end ASUS pushed for sli licensing at which point opened the door for 4way sli with expander supporting bios's.

Unfortunately.....when mounted this poses a problem.

Luckily, with ROG connect switched on and the provided USB cable you can power on the board remotely and reset, shutdown remotely.

ROG connect has been removed from it's solitary sideway mounting to a normal USB port and is designated as white still.

Last but not least due to the severe temperatures needed to get the most out of AMD cpu's care must be taken in component and chip placement.

I found this crystal to be sometimes problematic if the board was to cold on CH4.

More to come. This is just my initial musing and thoughts on the board for now from a xtreme cold benchers POV.

Other than the heatsink which I personally think is an improvement visually and practically none of the above mentioned should apply or concern the 24/7 crowd.

Pulled the heatsinks since CH4 was plagued by bad contact at launch. It seems Asus nailed this on the head as well and other than some users having a preference of which paste they use I find no need for users to remove sinks.

For those curious, pwm components have not changed, if it's not broken don't fix it is always a good approach.

Have you been able to get any LN to test it cold chew*? Just wondering if there is any benefit moving to this one over my CH4E or wait till BD then spring for one of these or the extreme version of the board?

Well theres potential for a guranteed AMD 3dvantage High score with an expander.

I guess 03 and heaven is a possibility to.

I'm putting the board through the ropes on a stock cooler in prime blend at stock with high ram clocks on every set I have now to see if it can break any previously known barriers....

Once I get through all this ram I will move onto some other stuff.

It's CPU power yes.

You have been using to many intel boards :p:.

ASUS has been using this driver mos setup for a while for AMD.

Me personally I don't think that proadlizer cap was doing much but taking up space and getting frozen.

I think without even asking ASUS this question it can be answered. Does the market need one and is there a market for one at this point in time.

I would say the answer is no at this point in time. I would also say the out come of retail bulldozer glass will be the deciding factor here.

So like i said doing some ram testing.

I haven't put alot of time in but so far no sets have been able to breach 2100 ram in prime 95 blend win 7 64.....

One set in particular is failing drastically which oddly enough is probably the best set.....

GTX3 on a mainstream M4A89PRO just tested a few weeks ago.........

I have access to all bios's. No need to change yet, the GTX3 issue is due to the subs the board is defaulting to by auto, just verifying it.

Yeah, you just gotta figure out the BIOS. The board is primarily for BD but it does a darn good job with Thuban if you configure BIOS properly - also why I run Memtest first, just to give you a hint ;)

Not yet but atm I'm testing module compatibility as average joe, aka set primaries and go save the GTX3's seeing as they exhibited issues right away.

Just plugged in a set of 8 gig 1600 7-8-7 so far granted 2T but they are passing slacked at 2000, thats an improvement for this set.

Ignore the 6-5-6 they are not going to impact stability for being too loose. tWR sometimes has a few offsets behind the scenes so it might be that.

Could be a Tweaker issue as that has been known to misreport at times, though I will check it out.. Those GTX3s; what happens when you leave the primaries on AUTO?

No it's fine, I have headroom to 1023 after that it's a no go, trcd at 11 probably cut them some slack.

tbh this set and gtx 3's in general I would term as a tuners model.

They have never been as forgiving as my Flares however when tuned right can surpass the flares in primary timings ( not subs however )

Well then there's no real problem Chew - because the DOCP profile is for DDR3-2000. The rest comes down to manual tuning and it's not worth us setting tWR to 10 over DDR3-2000 just for one set of modules when everything else works ok.

Well save for the issue that the ram is rated for 2400 as is the DOCP at those timings not 2000....there should in theory be a comfortable amount of headroom which there isn't presently.

We aren't talking about some budget set of ram in this case.

Is that RAM rated at DDR3-2400 on AMD or Intel?

We are looking at what most people will use and are not going to invalidate the board's general functionality for one set of modules - when you can run them at DDR3-2000 and make changes as required to clock higher. Most modules need a tWR of 12 over DDR3-2000 so that's what gets precedence I'm afraid.

We can't start doing vendor/module specific profiles, as it would soon become cumbersome. It will be easier just to help users who want the extra bandwidth out of modules like these - there won't be many that have them and those that do are generally tweakers.

I should note the board performed exceptionally well from beginning to end, no more cold issues as with previous boards. No more stolen clock syndrome after only 1 hour of benching, it performed almost flawless albeit there are a few small things I will bring to ASUS's attention to see if we can get them straightened out :)

One other tidbit I forgot to mention which i discoverd last night which will effect the extreme crowd.

For those lucky few that managed to scoop one of these AMD specific pot's up from Vince before he discontinued them be forwarned, You will either have to cut the PWM sink to make clearance or look for another board.

How much space you have to work with with your ln2cooling pot?

My 90mm pot was very tight on the CHIVx and I tend to like a "little" insulation :)

I'd rather not cut mine but it is an option, in my case I just used a different pot.

There is a decent amount of frost but diff insulating methods can overcome it. Just need to adjust methods to the application.

I've always been able to bench with my PWM soaked in water due to my methods, not gonna fly for the eraser guys but imo eraser has it's uses and it has it's misuses.

Just because there is a lack of benchers/competition in no way means you still shouldn't try to push the limits :)

There will be 1 less AMD guy around in the near future, It's time for me to step down and take a break once again like I did shortly after working with ATI on manta and grouper.

Ok so after my quick ln2 run on this board i did run into a small issue that needed to be worked out, basically this serves dual purposes.

Air/water guys on ln2 with locked cpu's and ln2 benchers.

Had an issue with higher htt, I needed higher htt as an ln2 bencher do to some recent changes AMD made to agesa code which limits NB multis.

Here's what you get with 300 htt for options.

At 250 htt 4000NB is just not going to cut it but 300 htt will max out the majority of cpu's.

Apparently there are some possible auto rule issues that are being worked on. For the time being just set the primary timings normally found in cpu-z and touch no other timings, leave them auto, even if you set them to what auto is setting them manually you will find a no post situation. You may have to hit reset a couple times to get a sucessful boot.

While runnig the above I happened to notice something else rather odd, in cpu tweaker MRL is very very high for channel A only.

Do not use cpu tweaker to change this, it will apply but it's not actually applying. Use AOD instead as a workaround for now.

As you can see from these 2 shots it impacts latency slightly when at an optimal setting.

omg, it is mega POT :). How with preparing RAM slots? Its good "only" electro-insulating tape? Or its better this plastic "modeline"?

While I was fooling around with HTT I decided to test a real locked chip, unfortunately the IMC is not to great on this one at very high htt however if you run more conseravtive settings 300+ is easy.

Quick question -
Is that your square one or a rectangular Venom? A pot like my venom rev 5 should be fine by my calculations, considering the pot is considerably slimmer (like 1/2 inch) on the PWM/memory sides. On my pot, the edge of the mounting holes for AM3 are almost equal to the inner wall of the reservoir. It will be tight to wrap, however it should fit.

You must have missed the part of the AMD specific. The AMD specific pots were only square and only offered mounting for AMD.

You have the intel variant, not sure about clearance with that.

"Intel" universal variant will fit no problem by my calculations, though Venom was designed for AMD/non CB in general...sorry, my mistake.

The orginal venom was designed for AMD, the version you have was tuned for gulfy, and also has AMD mounting.

Yes I do believe that the tuned for gulfy pot will fit, but I can not confirm so not having the pot.

A discussion about the difference in performance of the 2 pots and what/how they are tuned is best played out in another thread.

Still doing testing however i believe in this post the board may have dropped a channel.

Dropping a stick would explain that large of a gap. I have not seen more then a couple of points spread unless there is quite a bit of system bus instability during boot.

Well to see what i'm seeing you need to go for 2000 ram at high htt which should not be an issue considering the ram is only running at "stock".

I have already verified htt up to 333 is stable, the problem is when you go for a higher ram speed.

I agree. High ram speed together with high HTT will result in stability issues at bootup without careful tuning. This normally results in dropping a stick of ram along with MRL being out of whack. Which is why such configurations really need to have Task Manager or a comparable utility posted along with any screenshots to show that all memory is being used.

Yeah, 333HT is no problem. I've been running 340x12 with the memory at 1800 the last couple of days.

Yah the only discrepancy I see with that is cpu plays a rather large role there, example my 1055T which is a total dud ( on purpose ) has trouble at higher frequency speeds memory wise with high htt, swapping cpu's continually changes this.

A 1090T that I have good IMC written on ( known good to 445 htt on certain boards ) has no trouble however.

The rest of the cpu's vary as well, somewhere in the range of 6 I have checked so far.

Beta bios's that i work with are specific to bulldozer, tbh thuban functionality with dozer agesa is basic functionality and just that, nothing more so useless to endusers at this time and personally not reccomended for thuban.

I'm preety sure that when BD becomes available there will be plenty of bios's and also sure ASUS will state if using thuban do not go beyond XXXX bios version for compatibility reasons.

than I I tried these settings I've already tried before (already done memtest with 300% coverage)

- bus 229
- ram 1838 7-7-7-21 1T @ 1.65v
- cpu 4020 @ 1.4375
- NB 2987 @ 1.325

after saving changes in bios the main wont post and shut down (no post, fan at maximum rpm for less than 1 second and shut down..) !
It is strange this shut down! When I could not post usaully the led power of screen blink and I have not a post, but there was no shutdown!
It seems strange because with these settings on previous bios I could post and also I've done memtest.

After that I re entered the previous settings I use in my daily use (prime95 stable) and the main give me the same problem, no post and shut down! Power on the system again no post and shut down after few seconds..
what is happened?

Now I entered bios and selected "load optimized default"...
I've made the post and after doing a reboot I re entered the settings of my daily use and the boot was done without problems..

You won't get 2000 with Hypers stable on Thuban...unless these boards play nicer.

I'll have a CHV to play around with at the end of the month if things go according to plan...
