Motherboards for the upcoming Socket LGA 2011 based on the Intel X79 chipset will be on display at Computex, most of the manufacturers having at least one model to show, in various stages of development. We managed to snap a few shots before the show will start tomorrow, when more details will be available.

Yeah, it's 4-channel DDR3. The number of S-ATA ports is interesting too, as well as the backpanel.
EDIT: the board is in development stage, the final one will be black.

Interesting board, 12 SATA ports, with only 1 south bridge, I'm sure they can do 7 slot / Quid CF/SLi slots

holy hell look at all the boards from different manufacturers, intel is really putting amd's feet to the fire here. I can see a couple elite boards now. also note the almost complete lack of pci slots.

I'm curious about the insane amount of SATA ports...
Sure, its a server platform so it makes sense the chipset has a lot of ports, but... why use them on consumer boards?
At least now in case SATA ports die, you got plenty of fresh ports left to wear down ^^
And yeah, mounting pots might be a bit tricky...
i don't get it, why do all the boards have split memory slots on both sides of the CPU? unless there's some kind of design advantage to this, i would think it's easier to make the memory traces on the board if they were all grouped together
Gimme 8 DIMM slots, WTF was Intel thinking when they implemented quad channel and only added 4? May as well go back to dual channel if they did that. Hopefully higher tier motherboards will feature 8, but at the moment, I'm not impressed, apart from having 14 SATA which is nice.
The CPU has so many memory control pins, that they had to split them on the two sides of the CPU package to improve the speeds and reduce interference problems. It was inevitable for quad-channel memory.Quote:

ya they are SOO crazy to only put 4 slots right? but seriously, how many people would actually fill all 8 slots? even if you fill all 8 with 1gb sticks, 8gb of system memory is way overkill for most systems. and with cheaper high density memory sticks nowadays, it's almost foolish to put 8 slots instead of 4.Quote:

Also the mounting holes mid board raise hope for a big ass sink that extends from SB all the way to the socket. Remember guys: in these outward appearance obsessed times form should over take priority over function.;)
Previous slides suggest 40 lanes, but with some being dedicated for the SATA ports I'm not sure if those lanes come out of the 40 3.0 lanes or if they have added extra just for that task.Quote:

This could all be solved if they turned the whole socket and design counter clockwise by 90 degrees. The mosfets will get plenty of exhaust air from the heatsink and there won't be any clearance issues with the dimms.
I realize that Intel probably designed the pin out of the socket this way with all the PCIe pins clustered at the bottom for shorter traces. But I really hope someone breaks away from this stupid "reference" design.

I have a feeling Ivy Bridge will kill Sandy Bridge-E in games and definitely in raw clockspeed. Probably going to skip this platform just because of the stupid dimm and mosfet layout.

These must be the low-mid range of X79 boards, just wait for EATX or bigger for decent layouts.
I guess the tracing for 4 channel RAM needs that kind of layout on a regular ATX, it's not like they WANT it to be like that.
Since there are 1155 EATX boards, then we will of course see that form factor for X79 as well, just wait and see.. ;)
Any word on pricing ? Im interested in this, however i have a feeling Intel is not going to be only expensive as x58 was.I kinda regret i didnt get x58 at the start :-/.
Highly unlikely, with no Ivy bridge EE on the board Intel will just stick on a locked top multiplier and have done with. As for games, without a clock advantage, how exactly is Ivy bridge going to beat a CPU with more cache same architecture and twice the memory bandwidth?Quote:

Anyone who actually paid attention to Sandy Bridge would KNOW that the 2600k only has 57x as top multiplier. LGA 2011 + HIgh ram sticks = no cpu cooler fitting (that's of any decent size).

I wonder how OCing will be with 4 sticks. We need a little voltage bump w/ 4 sticks now on 1155. This might damper OCs JUST a tad. I bet WRs will be with 1 or 2 sticks like normal.
I'd be more than happy with a 5.7Ghz Ivy bridge on air wouldn't you? 57x 'limit' is not an issue at all.
16x PCIe 2.0 is not being fully saturated even with a 6990 which is effectively only 8x PCIe 2.0 per GPU. Why would you think PCIe 3.0 would need more memory bandwidth when the GPUs don't even need it??
Quad channel Ram & PCIe 3.0 is not a bad thing but it's just not needed at all for current or even future GPUs and games within the next year or 2. It'll be great for other applications like benching, rendering or folding but excessive for gaming compared to what Ivy bridge can offer.

All Ivy bridge will offer is a better on board GPU and some new chipsets. It's not some great white hope, it's just a shrink so Intel put a better GPU in the same diespace. @Macadamia: The reference design allows for Eight Dimm's but at a reduced frequency, the price of 4GB Dimms isn't high enough for 16GB to be a worry. For most users the motherboard will still cost more than the ram.

Try another 18 months for Ivy-E. I really don't understand where all this hype for Ivy is coming from when SB hasn't been fully launched and fleshed out yet. Ivy is a 2012 product...It will be exactly like the SB launch (minus the sata fiasco). Mainstream Ivy 1055 in Jan/Feb (now pushed back to march/april) and Ivy-E socket 2011 in the fall, 2012!!
It's another year and half away and people are talking about it like it's right around the corner...WHY!?
Also, on a side note, why would you want 6 dimms on a 4-channel setup? You wouldn't be able to run all 4 channels properly if you filled all 6 dimms.
You had 6 on nehalem/westy because it was TRI channel, and 3 goes into 6 evenly. 4 Cannot go into 6 evenly..You need 4/8/12 dimm slots..
I'm personally disappointed that 4 dimms will be the norm...But what else can you do? I don't expect the majority of people buying this platform to have 8 sticks of ram. And if they did, how many people would actually need 32gb of ram? Otherwise it'd be a waste of money buying 2gb/1gb dimms, because you could get 8gb/16/gb with 4 dimm slots anyway.. Also, I'm sure it's more expensive for the mobo companies to make and its more expensive for the user to buy that many sticks.. I personally wanted to crack 20gb of ram but I guess 16 will be sufficient until 8gig dimms become affordable.
Just engineering boards, doubt that memory slot configuration will stay there i think final retail boards will come with 4 slots in right side of the board as been so far, at least E-ATX boards if not ATX boards, that socket is just monster.

That quantum force board looks mighty tasty, I also like how the retention system is threaded for direct metal HSF mounting.
I'm wondering if waterblocks would need to be scaled up or would one be able to reuse old blocks (e.g. supreme hf) for this platform, contact area would be enough I guess. :shrug:

Hope vendors don't fall for all the whining and keep the enthusiast/overclocking boards with 4 dimm slots only as speed should be emphasised over capacity on those. Workstation and server boards on the other hand are more than welcome to use 2 or more slots per channel.

Not a great sign for SB-E overclocking unless they specifically had in mind a Xeon 8c/16t lower clocked SB-E (like the ES we have seen, but with retail-higher clocks.) But who knows... maybe they were drunk when they thought up this monster or i'm just reading into the last half of the sign too much (or else they would have combined a 1155 + 2011 if they wanted clocks + threads.) Regardless :up: for Asus for even showing such a wacky design :)
