GIGABYTE GTX580SOC test

I got one of these GTX580SOC (Super Overclock) cards from Gigabyte VGA guys and did a quick test while i wait for software to change volts lol

I know a few guys are interested to see what it's like with a few different non-reference cards being benched at the moment. I wasn't sure what to expect but so far it's pretty positive.

Main Hardware setup:

• GIGABYTE P67X-UD3R
• GIGABYTE GTX580 SOC GPU
• Intel Core i5 2500K
• Corsair Dominator GT Hypers
• Kingpin Gemini + Fatty pot
• Antec TP1200
• Windows Vista 32bit
  

I used the (red) extreme bios, it's a switch between standard and "extreme" bios

Good news > card likes full pot -184C benching

Bad news > -60C CBB. I asked for the mod so hopefully can get that and share it with y'all.

No software control at the moment other than 1.15v tab which ends up 1.1v real under load

Overclocking

On stock cooler > 950-1150. Pretty average, all my reference cards can do that and probably more on vmem. I was hoping memory would go higher but it was only 1.56vmem measured on DMM so maybe that's the issue.

LN2 with 1.1v on the core: 1200Mhz 01/03 nature and a almost GT2 vantage(crashed mid way, didnt want to waste LN2 until i can get higher volts going) > promising considering low volts though :), 1250 core crashes near end of '01 nature so not too shabby

Will post up some updates when voltage control software lands in the mailbox, in the mean time a couple of pics :)

UPDATE


I applied more volts but it didnt seem to scale with volts as well as id hoped, anyways this was with 1.24v loaded. I dont know if constant pulled down to -60C after a crash has messed up my paste contact with core or not but to be honest i wont waste any more time and LN2 until i have a CBB mod. It's really a pain in the initial stages to work out the clocks. Once you know the clocks its not really a big deal but im not wasting any more time until i do the CBB mod

One thing i noticed with this card is it would seriously take LH2, it loves cold and scales really well with it

i also tested up to 1.8vmem and got 1250Mhz on memory(so likes cold at least heh), 1300 dropped out as soon as i raised the clocks heheh. I'll try more after CBB mod, until then hopefully matose or some of the others that have a card can share their experience. 1250mhz on vmem is not too bad, i could live with that :) i wouldnt take too much out of nature scores as ive done lots of reruns. I always run at lower clocks on card to warm up before i take it to full pot (not because i have to but just something ive done always with reference card lol)

yeah without CB mod it's benchable sure but it iwll be a pain in the arse to work out the clocks as i had to warm it up after every crash :rolleyes:

yah usually when im lazy to strap on an air cooler or SS i run this and splash it every 5 minutes, pot can hold a load well :)

No, that's 2 phase for GDDR and 1 phase (without software control) for PLL.

Any news with the mods dino?

P.S: That Hynix GDDR is crap, doesn't scale past 1225MHz not even with cold and 1.7v :(

Well, at least the card have improved from 480 SOC. I had few very nasty sessions with it..after feedback and mods it was not getting much better.
GTX 580 was out by then, so I did not have more time with the card.

If the GPU binning methods are real, these cards could do well. Or did GB drop the GPU gauntlet thing Dino?

i dont give a :banana::banana::banana::banana: what it does on air however, got some software to give core and mem some serious volts so will report how it went and if the card lives :rofl:

i agree with you guys about vmem it needs to clock better. One thing that IS good about this vmem is ability to run crazy cold. Doing full pot iwth 1.56vmem is pretty damn good imo but yeah i havent really push vmem yet, will concentrate on core than vmem and see if 2.2v helps lol

Looks like your pretty CPU limited, I wonder if the card could pull those clocks in the same tests with the CPU running a bit faster...:-/

that will get tested later mate just doing initial stuff at same settings

sucks that it doesn't scale with volts... 1.24v and 1350core looks promising for 1.6v. If it can handle it.

Dino, put some load to GPU. HWbot Unigine heaven would be the best program for that purpose.

If you use those very light 3D programs like 01 and 03, you can not say much about real cold handling. The cold issues come when you are 1400MHz+ and too cold with very hard load.
My card did 1500MHz 3DM11 at -140C so they does not need full pot if contact is good.

i have to run full pot otherwise it will crash, this card is nothing like what you have man

as i said already i will bench it when i get a bloody cbb mod then i'll see how it goes in unigine and vantage

..Except ASUS will release their extreme oc vga soon (Matrix).
580 DC II was just to replace reference 580 model with better pcb and cooling design and the price was on the same level too. Impressive oc capabilities were just extra :D

I heard Matrix and CuII are almost identical? Matrix just has more pretty LEDs.....

Or has there been some PCB work done on it since then?

I have no idea really, but I think everything is software controlled, so no need to mod anything. There should be some other improvements as well.

Do you know if the software voltage limits are for pussies or for people who want to get an actual score? :D

Hopefully they work on the Software! SmartDoc is the worst VGA OC Tool at all! Even the "extreme" Version for the DCUII works just 50:50 -.-

true would be nice not to have to do any but hey yanking a resistor to get CBB sorted is not really a tough mod, the rest is addressed via extreme bios. I also asked for vpll mod which isnt part of xtreme bios and also core voltage offset to test whether its better than bumping volts from stock to whatever i need

i read in the MSI lightning thread that there is some problem with the OCP switch and that mod is required, is that right?

The ocp switch 'unlocks' OCP from 500A to 550A.

Benchbros ran 1600 03 without ocp mod. Mods only needed if you're insecure or from 1600 and up.

1650 @ 1.53V with low GT4 FPS :rofl: realy a high Leakage one

OCP comes at our 1700 run with 1.55V ...

but now we have another good one, 1600+ Full 3DMark03 with suitable FPS
nearly same voltages but realy hard to handle coz of Memory CB independed from vMEM :shakes:

can confirm CBB mod works beautifully even with -185 on the core if you crash

i've done the OCP mod as well which pushes it now to 1000A not that you'll ever see that sort of load lol

mods are dead easy even ur grandma can do them

havent done the LLC mod but it will be handy as there is droop, later

had a fail session but noticed that once i crashed first time clocks and everything just went downhill from there, during initial test crashed past half way in 03 nature with 1.25v on core at 1400Mhz core -120C and then it was really crap no matter what change just couldnt get anyrthing past 1300, 1250 vantage GT2, nothing worth posting yet. Looks primising just have to work out how to bench it. Got some ideas from the godfather of overclocking himself (masbo) so will try to see how that goes next time :D

It's a...."shame" the GPU thermal shutdown has to be in-place for day to day users. It would be sweet if the thermal recognition was tuned properly and "hot" & "cold" were split, so genuine hot could still be protected against but there was no limit on cold

i seem to have some sort of frequency wall i cant figure out how to pass

im maxing out at 1300 core in both 3DMARK11 and 3dmark03/05 i tried :confused:

this was done with 1.38v loaded -160c, it can run full pot just during initial testing used this and didnt really make any difference going colder :shrug:

1300 is nice but wtf why cant i get 03 to run stable at 1350 lol

have you tested 3DMARK11 with your card, what are your max core clocks on it?

unigine xtrm + gemini pot = broke my shoulder lol......after 10 (25/25)passes..and constant small pour every second....LOL

temp control was awesome...i didn't go beyond -150c ...

i didn't have 3dm11 os setup...
