Swiftech to release optional HSF for MCP35. pumps

Hello All,


I am pleased to report the upcoming release of a new cooling accessory for the MCP35. pump series (MCP350, 355, 35X).

This is an Aluminum extruded Heatsink that is fastened to the pump using its base screw holes and thermally connected thru a thick thermal pad/gap filer.

It can either be used in passive mode, or receive an 80mm fan, and it includes a set of rubberized feet to decouple the assembly from the chassis so as to reduce vibrations/noise.

ETA is 3 weeks.

That seems a bit large. Kinda knocks the crap out of the compact nature of the pump to begin with. :shrug:

It does add some size to it, but with just the passive sink, it wouldn't be all that large.

True, but the idea was to enable 80mm fans usage if desired for low rpm/low noise, so the form factor was mandatory..

While I agree, and that radiator test was god horrid, they have come a long way and I'm willing to give them a chance.

I started my water cooling with swiftech, but even they :banana::banana::banana::banana:ed up, see the apogee GTX with aluminum and the colbalt coating that didn't really hold up:down:

Everybody screws up, koolance has come a long way. But still when I look for WC parts, switech, EK are on the top of my list. :yepp:

That's not true, thermochill and hardware labs, and swiftech did not. There was a BS article trying to prove ALU was better, and even with glycol some people had reactions.

BTW, you know how the pump housing only has 2 mount points. The HSF has 4, so you can rotate the HSF in the correct fin orientation to take advantage of an existing fan for example..

Interesting stuff as always Gabe.

The fan may make the overall unit larger but I think the sacrifice of a little space is worth minimizing the chances of pump failure which in turn would cause hardware failure. It's a decent solution for people who don't want to take a dremel to their DDCs and void their warranty.

Even though Koolance may have come up with the heatsink idea first Gabe went the extra step and added the fan to the setup.

People need to stop hating!

Nice Gabe. One question, it looks like those feet are threaded. If it is mechanically fastened at the feet, does that bypass the rubber piece used for decoupling?

I have swiftech and koolance in my system .

Swiftech rads and pumps, koolance blocks and fittings.

both are top notch at what they are, but those koolance fittings are just sweet. It's hard to tell the difference in pictures but they just seem a notch above when using them quality and ease of use.

Never considered anything but swiftech rads and the mcp-35x is great.

You need to look at what is now not what was.

The custom male/female post reaches thru to heatsink, and features shoulder holding fan against heatsink; the male and female threads are standard 6-32. Rubber bushing is secured to foot of post with a 6-32. if no fan is used, the posts can also be used with rubber bushings to decouple assy from chassis.

I'd say they are completely different, and I'll tip my hat to them doing a completely 180 and turning from "avoid at all costs" to "one of the best", it's really impressive and I'd recomend their products to anybody as some of, if not some cases, the best out there.

Technically Koolance wasn't the orignator of the DDC heatsink either... Naekuh was, who got his idea from something Rocky (evil98) did. And trust me, I hate to even admit that Naekuh was at the start of it, because now I'll never hear the end of it.

And I believe BeiFei was the one that made them for him. I still have a couple laying around. I never really thought the MCP355 needed one, but it was a nice idea. Gabe, I love the fact that you are improving your designs. You have brought a lot of new products to the community lately and I am really looking forward to seeing the new rads. I would like to see some acrylic tops come from you for your blocks, but other than that I am just really liking all your new products and revisions. Glad to see you are not just sitting around playing WOW. :D

It's good to see all the vendors rather healthy and neck in neck. It's good for the whole genre, and provides actual choice for those that care more about aesthetics then strict performance, without having to worry about one being completely terrible but looking good, etc.

Earlier I was looking around for 60mm fans (to make something similar), but I couldn't find much and very much agree with the 80mm concept. 60mm fans are getting to be few and far between and any you can find are high rpm. 80 is the way to go..:up:

i'll revise my statement:

A lot of people used aluminum rads because they didn't want to buy all those expensive 'watercooling' radiators that were just painted heater cores.

what I'm saying, go back 10 years ago and ppl freak out a LOT less about aluminum.

Ask Gabe about alu and the MCW5000 series (wich was way before koolance alu rads). Im shure there is plenty of "happy" memories regarding that block and its alu top.

Ok, so then the paradigm is that it's not's physically attachable to a case and rather held in place my the tubing and the fact that it'll be relatively heavy and sitting on rubber. (and that the case is stationary and not sitting in the back of an empty tractor trailer) That correct?

I'm not being silly, just making sure that I understand.

Edit: +1 on swiffy QDCs!@ (no drip and metal of course)

I wonder if this would work with an apogee drive :D just slap in on top and bingo less heat from the pump inside the loop :p:

Ehhh aluminum is fine as long as you use decent antifreeze and well more important all aluminum parts, good luck finding a decent aluminum water-block though. So yes copper and brass it needs to be if you want the loop to live a long time.

Don't forget copper-coated is also fine to mix with Alu. Koolance used to use Gold plating to get round the issue.

How would plating with Chrome or Nickel hold up? (I'm not too good at understanding the galvanic chart).

Ummmm swiftech has a larger base, so i cant speak for them.
But when i was playing with them, and i still have some of them on... they worked fairly well.

I use koolance versions now tho, unless the fixture is made so it cant take the extended koolance housing.



Now i dont see why u guys got your panties in a bunch when the alu isnt even wetted.
The only time we avoid alu is when its wetted.

I can name 1 epic fail from every vendor out there, except AF, probably because he's always been small, and always followed the way of the wise.

But everyone has failed epically.

No vendor is perfect, but its the effort they make to become perfect. This is what makes the vendor important.


So far, all the vendors who comes on XS alone, are trying to become perfect.
The wouldnt listen to our rants, and our opinions, unless it was important.

To look at a vendors mistake in the past, and not see how much they made an effort to change now, is only looking at them with the back of your head.

Koolance especially, you guys have no idea how much work DEAN, yes... the guy with the futurama robot avatar, had put into XS, and Koolance, to get the image and name they have now.

Swiftech wouldnt be the company they are now without.. Gabe.. and michelle... <-- sorry gabe u know how much we love her...
He is another vendor who strives at making things perfect.
Even if his own product isnt perfect, gabe will sit there for hours pondering why.. and test things out himself.

New Rads: Stephen has substantially upgraded our test bench, and it has allowed him to conduct very throrough tests with superior accuracy to what was possible before. The new rads reflect our findings. Nothing revolutionary, but substantive performance improvements in the most commonly used configurations.

Acrylic tops: up until recently, despite our best efforts, we've had cracking issues wit those. The guys at Koolance have a good approach on the design, using S/S cover to fasten the acrylic plate, which spreads the stress and prevents cracking, and I noticed that EK is now using a similar concept on one of their latest offerings. Personnaly, I am always reluctant to use someone else's idea unless I can innovate and improve upon it, and make it "my own" so to speak -but in general, I do stay away from others' ideas, and would rather innovate pure and simple, just for the joy of it!

This being said, I have not given up on acrylic tops. We recently bought a piece of equipment to treat the material. Let's see if it produces positive results.

I edited my earlier response . Bugt yes, the assy can either sit on the panel unnatached, or be bolted to the panel. If you were to bolt it, you'd keep the rubber bushing in place on the feet, and drive a 6-32 thru the back of the panel, preferably using another rubber washer to decouple the screw.

Yes, why not if you have enough room? the Drive motor has the mount holes. You could even recut the HSF to fit the pump, it's very easy to do with a hacksaw. In fact, I wonder if we shouldn't release another HSF just for this. Need to discuss with Stephen about it. But note this: the amount of heat that goes into the loop remains very limited, so the primary benefit of installing an HSF to the pump would'nt be noticeable for loop thermal perf, but rather to remove heat from the pump.

regrettably you discontinued the apogee drive, wondering three things
A. what are the difference between the xt and the GT/drive.
B. if the pins are different on the xt would it be possible to upgrade the drive by changing the copper plate
C. back to the heatsink I was thinking of adding the heatsink because I was thinking of doing the mcp350 to 355 mod and the additional heat from the pump might bleed to the coolant are all the drive ones the ones with the mod-able board?

No. it was mentioned that MCP35X is among pumps this heatsink can be mounted on, but not that it's needed for it. Imho it's not needed on MCP350/DDC-3.1[0,5] too. It's 18W versions that sometimes tend to overheat.
As for heatsink itself .. i see same drawbacks in this, starting in what was in original BeiFei's one - bad heat transfer from original plastic case, - imho this time Koolance did more "right way", and not just cooling wise (metallic and not airtight casing replacement), but also size and mounting holes wise (not too sure about the last, but am too lazy to recheck). - As in imho one of main features for such heatsink to have - for it to be mountable on pumps mounted in as many ways as possible, not just one scenario - directly on case wall/floor. Because of bigger size - double tops can be striked out, one should check also how are things with bayrestops, (UN)design mounts probably also are out because of bigger distance between screws on this larger heatsink.

The heat amount of the 35X also depends on how PWM is used or not. I've got one setup right now that's running a 30% to 70% dynamic scaling using 42C coretemps as my loading switch using speedfan. The sunbeam rheosmart doing the same for my fans and the MCP35X are both connected to the MB header. It's not until I bench or render video or game really heavily that it ever really hits that 42C mark.

There is really no reason to run the 35X at 100% all the time if you make use of PWM.

At 30%, the power consumption reduces from a possible 22+ watts to only 6 watts at which point heat is pretty minimal.

I just like the idea of keeping the pump cool, both for the pump and also to minimize heat dump into the loop.

To all above:

Primary reason (incentive) why Stephen designed this, is that he saw interest for it in these forums.

Second (rational) reason: since it cools the pump further, it's win-win. So why not?


My take on it: it is simple, inexpensive, and according to Stephen's tests, effective in removing heat from the pump. So I green-lighted it.

gabe: any hints on approximate pricing? "inexpensive" is a bit vague :)

Nice design Gabe, though I find it a bit big. I know it's meant for active cooling as well, but one of the things I really like about the DDC's is their size. They fit in very small spaces, and I think in some places such a heatsink prevents placement. Still a great design nonetheless, and I like its design better than Koolance's (sorry Tim, it's just a matter of preference ;)).

I can't wait to see how well it does in Martin's decoupling test :D.

If its too big, break out the dremel. Nothing says you can't mod it for exactly your size requirements after purchase. :)

For 15 bucks i wont be afraid to dremel it atleast :)

Oh and just for the record. Im a fan of Gabe and swiftech and have been for some years. Shure they made some mistakes but they do make good quality products and Gabe always seemes so proffessional on this forum :)

I for one like the compactness of my MCP355 but I gotta admit there is plenty of room in my case (around the pump at least! :P ) so 60x60 or 80x80 is going to be the same for me.

Well, I can't argue with the price but, it looks like the fan is limited to a 15mm or 20mm thickness at best and if you cut the sink down to the size of the pump, your also going to have to rework the sink by adding the holes for the standoff screws if you want to keep the isolation system intact.

I think I'll stick to Koolance's as it's a bit more proactive about heat removal as well, what with the thermal pad touching both the sink and the PCB. Could really care less about keeping warranty in place. I'm actually more interested in the new 140mm rads Gabe. Depending on their size, I may have a home for a MCR140 right now. :D

Looks nice! I never thought these pumps would need a heatsync, but for ~$15, why not? Great work as always!

A simple G1/4 coupler can stack them like this, and nothing stopping you from adding a heatsink to the base of the others too.

Okay... that looks odd. Surprised it can maintain it's balance. (and even when running!) But yeah, I meant a 'real' dual pump top that most would use for a dual pump setup.

Yeah, I think he meant with a dual top. I am in the same situation. I have the Heatkiller dual top and this would have been nice, but the pumps sit right next to each other, so this won't work. However, I picked up my pump to see if it needed any cooling and even sitting on a towel with no airflow it was just warm. Worst case I can use the ones Bei Fei gave me. Back on topic, I really like this, probably more than the Koolance because of the built in stand it gives you. It's a great idea and the price is right. I will say it again, Gabe and Stephen, awesome job on the new products and innovation, really liking the direction. I am really interested in the new rads, hopefully we will see some more details soon.

Ahh...I see.

If I understand it right... these heatsinks simply mount to the base via the two base screw holes. You could probably make it work by drilling new holes and using a dremel to create the screw head socket.

Or you could simply cut one side down whatever that overhang is. You would loose the inner feet, but that's probably no big deal when you have two mounted to a solid two pump top. The latter option would probably look the best. The cuts would butt against each other, so you wouldn't even see that.

That could be good for anyone who wants PWM but plans to use an aftermarket top or maybe one of those bay res combos...

I have a mcp355 for 6 months now but havn't noticed any high temps with it, its on top of a noise damping foam like thingy as well. Is pump heat a big issue when it comes to longevity?

This one is not PWM regulated. The MCP350 (or a 35X @ 50%!) is very, very quiet already. :D
And we wouldn't be able to offer such a price if PWM was included ;)

stephen: I noted price regarding "MSRP of the MCP35X dropped to $99.9" :), though 35B being priced even lower then 350 even while having new top is wonderful aswell.
15$ imho is reasonable premium for PWM, even in cases if enhanced top is not used.

it's summer time, my mcp35x always run at 100% after turn on few minutes:shocked:
there seems a temperture sensor inside the pump, it will run at full speed if the pump internal temperature is over a predefined value. No response to the pwm control from the motherboard at this situation.
Anybody can help to confirm it?

Sounds wierd. Somehow doubt it. I suspect rather it's not some sensor in pump, but rather higher ambient temps > higher resulting cpu temps > above set temp threshold for min rpms. I'm guessing you should be able to tune temp tresholds how pwm should act. Pump's heatsink in this case will do nothing to change that.

I used oscilloscope to check the PWM wire, it's 60% duty cycle but the pump run at full speed.
When I use a fan to blow the pump for a few minutes, it reduced speed and under motherboard pwm control again.
hope there are mcp35x user can help to confirm

I can only confirm that when the PWM duty is at 60% the pump runs at full speed no matter the temperature. That's your issue. The PWM curve doesn't scale from 0-100% in a linear fashion.

That's what I got too, here is the PWM to RPM response that I got using a Gigabyte board and Easytune 6.

35% is really about 1/2 power.

I guess it probably depends on the motherboard and software used too.

It also responds the same when hooked up to an Aquaero 5 (XT/PRO) using the PWM header which I have it running under currently.

When I performed the validation testing for the MCP35X-HS I've had a MCP35X run at >50 C (pump back panel) for several hours @ 100 % PWM. Data was logged for the whole duration of the test and it never throttled down.

Prior to that I did some validation testing at high coolant temperature (> 50 C) and it didn't throttle down either - the actual pump temperature (back panel) wasn't recorded but at this coolant temperature it was likely > 60 C.


I am thinking your CPU temperature might have been high enough to increase the PWM response. After all, easytune6, fan Xpert, etc are actual "temperature controller" reading CPU temps and increasing PWM accordingly. Maybe what you experienced was just that? If it's still happening right now, can you give me your easytune6, fanxpert, bios settings and and your current cpu temps?
