wow this is awesome! congrats your chip is golden :)
Very interested on seeing if more of these cards can unlock successfully.
Isn't Device ID # wrong ? 6970 should be 1002-6718 and 6950 1002-6719.. it would be better to see before-after performance results at same frequencies..
Will this work with a Sapphire 6950?
Old 3d mark score was x1100
New 3d mark score is x1789
Clocks are the same, as far as I can tell it works, seems there is no laser cut
Its a HIS 6950
Should've post this here - http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...&postcount=750
Btw guys, i get artifacting in ati tool scanner, quite badly. But in all the benchmarks i've run i haven't seen any
My 6950 never artifacted in the scanner. I tried lower clocks, 6950 speeds, still artifacted. But i haven't seen any in game
Artifacts in 3D mode for me.
powercolor 2 cards.
Getting artifacts too, but the card flys along in game :S
Only getting artifacts on atitool 3d scanner, nothing else, furmark is fine. Bios 2 is the backup so flashed bios 1
Run for 5 mins so far, seems fine!
15 min mark and its still not artifacting
NICE
I just ordered a 6950
I have no self control rofl
I flash my sapphire 6950 and it worked gained about 100pts in 3dmark11 clock for clock
Any artifacts? :D
30 mins in and still nothing :)
Ran it for a good 10-15 minutes as well, no artifacting. I remember it being a good tool to test my 4890 core with, but same with ati tool  gpu tool tester is hotter though, more on terms with furmark etc.

Some more benches here: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...&postcount=758
^its the ony thing that will do it, no idea why! Furmark has no issues and GPUtool is still running with me (35mins)
Remember one thing guys, the chips are locked to certain number of SIMDs for a a reason ;). If you encounter instability or artifacting you should revert back to default bios or clock down.
More crysis benchmarks
6970 flash at stock:
http://paulyd.co.uk/oz/6970%20crysis.jpg
6950 at 920/1450 doesn't even touch it:
http://paulyd.co.uk/oz/6950%20crysis%20920_1450.jpg
I just note that gpu-z shows me 1600 shaders vs yours at 1536.
no idea why though.
Old GPU-z?
@Oztopher:
so you did flash your hd6950 with the asus6970 bios and than did a run with crysis before and after? and the RAM of your hd6950 (stock @1250) can stand the high clocks of 1375mhz (stock of hf6970) without artifacts and voltage increases? what do the temp sensors say when you run with hd6970 bios instead of 6950 while crysis?
thanks
^must have a bad card :( Seems some can handle it and some carnt. Mine just powered through a couple of BFBC2 matches
What happens with the texture units? Do they go from 88 to 96?
I want do this with my sapphire 6950 is it worth it?
An extra 100 point is 3D mark 11 doesn't seem exciting enough
what about real game performance?
Currently running 900/1350
They do, and go for it. Report back.
Which one is for flash 6970 ? (the Flashable switch BIOS)
1 or 2 ?
@Gaul: i think you are wrong with your purple markings: no 1 is the position nearer to the bracket, but you labelled it in the pic as No 2, just have a look on the metal backplate above the switch of the card: its written there, and do not forget to -unlockrom in DOS mode before trying to flash new bios to position no 1.
greets
Maybe this just stems from too high Core/ Memclock ?
I mean 1375 is a huge overclock from 1250 on the memory...
Ok run this again, flashed cards one and one, my top one articfacts bad, the other one seems to work.
saw some glitches in the benches I did run.
but seems ok.
Yep Gaul, the markings are the other way around. Just follow the instructions from the guru3d link :) should work fine. If anyone else has their card not recognised after flash, wait for windows to install its drivers, then disable the card in device manager, renable it and restart when prompted. Worked fine for me after that.
Max overclock with stock volt 1.175v:
http://paulyd.co.uk/oz/6970%20crysis%20975_1475.jpg
It's only just hit me, i bought a £275 card for £220 :D ... fingers crossed nothing bad happens or anything...
Another instruction from Techpowerup
http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/...ng/vidcard/159
I can't wait to get to my house to give it a try :)
Flashed mine and its showing as 1600 SP?
you're using an old version of gpu-z. update it and it'll show it correctly.
seems like a high success rate :)Code:Manufacturer Cards Unlocks and Unlocks but Does not unlock
tested works fine rendering errors
AMD 1 1 0 0
HIS 3 3 0 0
ASUS 1 1 0 0
PowerColor 1 1 0 0
btw: does it only unlock the shaders or the texture units as well?
wow and 6950 r starting to get rebates and free shipping!
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-356-_-Product
$279.99 with $20 rebate
looks like it unlocks the 8 TU's as well.

The extra shaders are clearly working

I tried to flash my Asus 6950 but i have a message : adapter not found .
I used atiflash 3.79 .
Any idea ?
Nice work guys. That is about $100 savings on a card.... hmm :yepp:
try this one ;)
http://www.mediafire.com/file/0dt0cw...y/atiflash.zip
or use winflash linked in the techpowerup guide linked above
Does it perform as well as a 6970 after the unlock?
Mine unlocked, testing it in futuremark benches next.....

Has anyone had success on an XFX or are you all running Sapphire and HIS for the most part?

I think there maybe something more to this unlock or maybe my drivers got corrupted but I'm getting artifacts with supersampling aa in nfs-hp, but I'm sure it worked fine just after the flash. I turn aa off and it's fine. heaven and 3dmark11 run fine so I'm confused now.
Anyone run some games on high settings for a few hours and post back?? Wanna get some more info before i take the plunge.. :)
I have been running lots of benchmarks and so far nothing weird other than temps. The fan profile seems to be a bit strange as temps were maxing in the 70's prior to unlock and now they get to upper 80's. As well I heard the fan kick it up a notch for the first time and it takes its time to cool it back down to idle levels. ATI CCC manual fan control will not work with the updated bios/unlock.
great
thanks for the update
$293 free shipping at Amazon (no tax in CA) for Sapphire and HIS versions...
Why did I get that silly 6870? It's straight to Ebay for that card...
@Rattle - my self control might be similar, LOL!
Heh I got mine from amazon for 297 overnight
unlucky i don't have 6950 ie..ie
I picked mine up for $280 @ tigerdirect.com :)
This is so sweet. Like the old days...

I wonder if artifacts are due to different timings on the RAM chips (since they use different chips on the 6950'ies and 6970'ies and certain circumstances may "break" certain cards RAM?). And don't forget to increase Powertune to 20%+.
does RBE support the 6900s yet? time for some BIOS modding regarding memory timings ;)
Do you think the 2 x 6 PIN PCI-E connector will be an issue in the long run for 6950's flashed to 6970's?
I've seen a few threads with people reporting artifacts on just Atitool with 6870 as well. I wouldn't take that as a sign of instability. If you google "6870 Atitool" more threads will pop up.
TPU thread
This is so awesome, thanks guys. I knew that HD6950 was far better deal ;)
So we have a pretty decent success rate here, after flash it is the same card as HD6970? AMD is going to be very very mad :D
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
Are you all running with the power setting @ +20?
I'm getting artifacts in Heaven when I run at +20
I've finished my first vga unlock/flash. I have an Asus 6950 and used the Asus 6970 bios.

1. When I run Heaven after 30 seconds it hangs. Do I have to change settings in CCC? <-- I've reinstalled Heaven and the problems are gone!!
2. In GPUz 0.5.0 it says that I have a 6950. Is that correct? My shaders are 1536
Hmm...maybe GPUZ is wrong because it report from device ID look at on device ID
list it still 6719 that is a ID for HD6950 but for Shaders i think it real increasing
you can checking with 3D bench
btw. hangs after 30sec maybe your gpu/mem can't running on HD6970 clock speed
try reduce little speed and benching again if it still hangs maybe you a one of
bad luck
Cheers ;)
very good news for all 6950
None.
I think I had the fan speed to low
Anyhow I did another run @ 20+ and had no issues although having the power on 20+ does nothing to improve things
