EK-480 block on GTX580?
I just got my 480 not too long ago, within 90 days, so yay for evga step up program. I look at the PCB photos, it seems like it might fit, except where the opening in the back, the 580 doesn't have them, but it does have holes for screws.
So what do you guys think? Would it fit?

I'm in the same boat. It looks like the holes line up from the pictures you posted.
looks spot on.......would be interesting....that would make me change my current train of though about adding a 3rd 480 if I can use the blocks on 2 580s
I just ordered 2 EVGA GTX580. And hope a GTX480 bloc can fit on. I think yes.

The only real difference i see is one more bolts near bottom ram chip, and the added 2 small volts controll chips that dont interfeer.
Guess we'll have to wait for Eddy's word on it... Another on the same boat here :)
From the photos I think the RAM on the right side of the GPU has shifted up about a half a chip. I think there is a height change on the GPU also.
Nothing a thick thermal pad shoudn't be able to fix though.Quote:

The 'extra' volt control chips shouldn't matter unless they need cooling, they're not in the way.
But if there's height differences on the mem & GPU it might not work...
Very true, 1/2 a RAM shouldn't be an issue. If pads are needed on the RAM be sure to check the Vreg area too..may have to double those up. Let us know how the test fit goes nusihb!Quote:

Apart from that I don't think there isn't any major differences, than the Added mounting points at the bottom of the far right bank of memory chips, and the holes where the Fan hole used to be.

Maybe it will fit with some 'modding'... maybe not.
You know, this gives me an idea. Why not have "recertified" blocks?
Imagine if rather than half to find someone to buy your current block there was a company or even the manufacturer who repurchased it from you and then resold it. I think this could really help in situations like this. In addition it could open up new possibilities for buyer loyalty programs that let people trade up to new blocks for a price or something of the sort.

Block des not fit, because of the changed mounting holes at VRM.
Holes seem to be added, not changed... but I'll find out tomorrow, I guess, if it's possible to 'retro-fit' a 480 block to 580 (DD in this case).

Sure it fits on 2D picture, but it will probably leave gap or not tight contact on VRMs. Go for it and report temperatures.
I m going with what designer of block actually has to say.

GPU is a tad higher, maybe too high to use pads on mem/vrm's, if so I give up...
Looks like a fit to me. The top ram chip on the right should cool just fine, DDR5 runs uber cool anyhow. also if the GPU is a little higher/taller then some themal pads on the mem, and vreg section should fill the gaps.
im half tempted to test fit one at work tomorrow to lay this to rest.
i dont think companies would go to all this trouble to make new 580 blocks if the old one did fit

Just tested the DD 480 wb on one of my 580s.
I had to use pads on mem instead of TIM, GPU is a few mm higher on the 580.
Result from a quick run at 850/2100:
Temp while running MSI 'multiGPU DX11 path' combustor was around 50-60+C on the back of the water cooled card, even around the VRMs.
GPU monitor at 55+C.
The other 580 (with OEM h/s) had board temps around 75-80+C... and GPU temp was almost 100C+.
Probably not as good as the 580 block, but good enough for me...
Now on to the 2nd 580...
Oops - slight correction, GPU temps was 53C/91C...

As you can see, TIM is showing imprints, so by just adding pads to mem 'banks' on the wb it's working OK...
You 'miss' half of the mem chip on one of the banks though, but it doesn't seem to have any adverse effect.

Is it even worth upgrading from a gtx 480 to a 580?? I already have aGTX 480 with EK waterblock.. seems like Eddy says we need to buy the new block for the gtx 580 but I am not sure its worth the huge loss to sell the 480 for the 580...
I don't care if i won't be getting the best contact with the waterblock, but what I do care about is the ability to OC higher, only actually have to be pay 18$ per card for evga step up, and More shaders.Quote:

Hey, DD block has used diferent mounting holes for mosfet chips.
EK block used the cutout lids in the PCB to mout the block for mosfet contact, so did Aquacomputer, and as 580 card does not have those lids blocks are not recomended to mount as mosfet chips vill most likely not have proper contact and the care will be bent. Therefore EK does not recomend to use 480 block with 580 GTX card.
Yep, I agree with EK&AT - the DD block is made 'simpler', that's why it fits 'better' on the 580.
I just got the 2nd DD block fitted to my 2nd 580, this one took a little more effort to fit - VRMs was not as tight towards the wb as the first one.
In the end, O/C did not gain anything from these 480 waterblocks - it was no difference from the OEM H/S (except the noise, of course):
- 855/2150 w/o voltage hike
- 925/2150 at 1.125v
Good enough for me, but maybe not for everybody else... YMMV.
Eddy, do you think it would be ok, at our own risk of course, to ghetto rig the 480 block to 580? Or is someone willing to trade? The only main mounting point that concerns me is the VRM, but it shouldn't be too hard to just grab a ziptie or cable tie and tie it thru the screw hole as tight as I could.
I'ts up to you. But we'll have 580 GTX block fitted perfectly.

just tested my old EK 480 full block on 580 works a treat with no modding to! Temp are really low 2!

How do i find out vrm temp there not in gpu-z like on the 480! Had card running vantage for about 3hour and its been fine!

Vrm are fine just took the card off and there making contact with the waterblock! When i installed the block on the card i made sure i put 2 lots of thermal pads on the vrms! This card will do till i get a proper 580 block!

I compared two of those visually. In VRM area only 1 side screw match (between 480 and 580 versions) and two other (middle and other side) are different.
There is also extra screw on 580 block in RAM area next to VRM. That extra screw on same side as mismatching VRM screws.
