Rumor: Intel Core i7 990X Extreme coming next month
Intel's fastest desktop processor on the market, the Core i7 980X, remains unattainable for most people at its current $1,000 price range, but that isn't stopping the company from releasing a quicker successor sometime next month. According to TechPowerUp, the Core i7 990X will be based on a new stepping of Intel's 32nm Gulftown architecture. It will feature the same six cores and twelve threads, but clock speeds have been upped from 3.33GHz to 3.46GHz.
Turbo Boost performance scales up to 3.6GHz, and if our experience with the 980X is any indication, overclocking this beast past 4.3GHz without resorting to anything more extreme than air-cooling shouldn't be a problem. Otherwise specs should be similar to other Gulftown parts. Intel's cheapest six core desktop processor to date, the Core i7 970, still sells for around $900 today, so here's hoping the new 990X helps lower the price for its predecessors.
The site also claims Intel is about to roll out a Xeon X5690 processor for servers and workstations, based on the new stepping and featuring similar clock-speeds as the Core i7 990X.

Alleged i7-990X May Be One Of The Last Gulftown Chips From Intel [New Rumor Pins Intel As Coming Out With Six-Core Extreme Edition Processor, Not Using Gulftown]
While most computer enthusiasts are looking ahead to Intel’s next-generation Sandy Bridge offerings, a new rumor being reported by site Fudzilla alleges that we’ll see Intel bring out one last Gulftown-based chip for a final Extreme Edition hurrah.
This Gulftown processor will be dubbed the Core i7-990X, and as you can tell by Intel’s naming scheme, it’ll surup the current -980X as the top dog in the Extreme Edition processors. As mentioned, instead of going with the upcoming 4-core Sandy Bridge generation, it’ll stick with the tried and true 6-core Gulftown.
The -990X will have a clockspeed of 3.46GHz and will offer a Turbo Boost of 3.73GHz. Of the six cores, expect 12 hyperthreated cores. The processor will allegedly be unlocked for overclocking delight. Unlike the upcoming Sandy Bridge processors, the -990X won’t have any extra on-chip graphics cores, so there shouldn’t be any extra silicon to hamper your overclocking efforts.
Fudzilla says to expect this card to come out in Q1 2011, with the typical Extreme Edition price of $999. As Intel ramps up for Sandy Bridge, Fudzilla says this’ll be the only new six-core Gulftown processor introduced between now and Q1 2011. We’d also imagine that it’ll be one of the last Gulftown processors to be introduced by Intel.
Intel, as a rule, does not comment on unannounced products and rumors.

this is crazy Criminal, 4750 MHz R11.5 air, mad chip :-). Now is clearly, the SB-K chip will simillary for OC.
-
PS:can show max OC in LINX (15 rounds or 30 minutes time)?

Wow amazing. very good chip 990X
Well done. Bro~:)

The 970 should be like 350$, the 980X 700$, and the 990X 1000$ ... I know how fresh and new the six-cores are, but there is no reason they should cost as much as an entire computer.

I hear the 990x will release at $1149.00 and the day they sell 970's for $350.00 the XS WCG team will order 200 of them!

How can you guys afford to do this stuff?! When I show the forums to my friends, I'm constantly pointing out things like:
"This dude's CPU cost more than my entire PC"
"This dude's GPUs cost more than my entire PC"
"This dude's RAM cost more than my entire PC"
"This dude's motherboard cost 3 times as much as mine did"
"This dude's storage setup cost is comparable to that of a Fortune 500 company"
"This dude spent more time perfecting this case than I have playing tennis... he deserves a varsity letter!"
Have any of you guys started with budget builds and then started becoming enthusiasts?

4650 Mhz stable is impressive (now im tested my new CPU baby i7 980X, to time 4400 MHz air stable with 1.37V), really and with +- safe voltage for 32nm....Uff! Sb will go higher, i heard about 5 GHz stable, but it is crazy idea :D

My first build cost me $1250.00 back in 2000.
A 700MHz AMD slot A.
As to these high end systems it's all about what your interests are.
I don't drink, do a vacation once a year for a few days.
This is what I enjoy spending my money on.
A laugh for you:
A friend of the family is a big shot with Cisco.
Was talking with him one day and PC's came up.
I said for a chuckle " I probably have better machines here than you guys do.
He said I doubt it, then he came over and for 20 mins was standing there doing a

So you prob. have about 100k$ worth of machines there, how you manage to pay those machines.
I can spend about 1500euros a month for any new hardware i might need.
I only have 2 dual-cpu Xeon X5680 servers, 2 older amd systems, i7 980x system, Xeon X5680 gaming machine and phenom 2 1090 machine and htpc.
Anyway impressive criminal, good chip, my i7 980x is crap, 4.5gh linx stable air and 4.8ghz max without load.
-
this is impressive Criminal, to time with good 980x chip, il ended at 4580 MHz LINX stable....And think, no more is possible, amybe 4600.

My personal feeling that the "right" price would be $500-600 for the 970 and add a $150 premium for the unlocked XE models.

No,no where near that much.
Systems:
SR2 rig: Investment of maybe $2500.00
There are factors in that as the board, case, memory and PSU were given to me.
Dual 24 core AMD MC system: $750.00
The cpu's were a gift, an unexpected one.
Dual Westmere:$2000.00
Board was a review sample
Sammy: Maybe $300.00 total
New 6 core Intel I just built;board, cpu and memory arrived in a box 2 weeks ago as a gift from a good friend.Totally unexpected.
Maybe $250.00 into that build.
If I had to go and buy all of this retail it wouldn't be here as no way in hell could I afford all of this.

I would so much like to afford an 990x, but tbh 1000+ euros seems too much for me atm  :shakes: Damn Greek economy!
Nice cpu btw
-
Yeah, greek economy, EU really threw hammer there :/.
Oh well, you dont get paid anymore 14month payment from 12month work, i heard greece had something like that.
Wish my 980X would be able to do 5.3Ghz Air :/.
-
rintamarotta: i wish the same, because im here to time :-D, 5128 Mhz aircooled

I only have 2 dual-cpu Xeon X5680 servers, 2 older amd systems, i7 980x system, Xeon X5680 gaming machine and phenom 2 1090 machine and htpc.
Anyway impressive criminal, good chip, my i7 980x is crap, 4.5gh linx stable air and 4.8ghz max without load.
I got crazy-arse watercooling... 19C water no matter how much load you put on it.... /9x 120mm....
And I got 4450mhz vantage looping stable.... So, wouldnt say your is bad at all... and mine is actually screened :ROTF:

Not all came as gifts..;)
Lots of money, but think all of us has been there, I think let alone cooling devices exceeding 15K isnt abnormal...

Yoko hits high but things are not good
VTT wont go higher than 1.35v
SO will not load when we set more than 1.55v vcore
cold bug at -124c
cold boot at -115c
X58A UD5 take to much time to post :(
but boot at 5700Mhz @ 1.55v is OK
