Guide on how to unlock GeForce GTX 465 into GTX 470

Hello guys,

Reference based GeForce GTX 465 will unlock to GTX 470 in a couple of simple steps. You can find the guide and also some results with the unlocked GTX 465 in benchmarks and games over at lab501.

Also, why isn't the PhysX checkbox checked in GPU-Z?

I like this. Better-performing and less costly than a 5850 (going by newegg's prices atm).

I will pop in a word of caution here.

Some of us have been trying this with the cards released to reviewers prior to launch which ARE retail samples. Of the 12 cards we have tested, 4 "unlocked", 3 recognized the BIOS but didn't "unlock" and 5 are now paper weights. Nothing was going to be published for several days until we found a way to successfully flash the dead cards back to their original state. Seems like caution has once again been thrown into the wind though.

You SERIOUSLY do this at your own risk ESPECIALLY if you don't feel comfortable reading translated Romanian.

I call BS... you can't unlock whats not physicly there and ALL the GTX465 I've seen so far has had 8 RAM chips and not 10 like the GTX470.

So? It might be missing adressable memory but have you seen what happens to GTX470 scores when you flash a GTX480 BIOS? 1000 point jump in Vantage. :ROTF::ROTF::ROTF:

Didn't notice that the price of 465 on newegg US is cheaper than 5850. In the UK 5850 is still cheaper.

I bought the 5850 for my girlfriend several months ago, and now 465 still needs to be unlocked (with risk) to overwhelm it :) and 5850 really consumes so little power so I just started to love this price-efficient choice I made :D

Notice the GPU-Z tool is reporting more ram for the flashed card? Is that a bug?

By the way the article talks their card is a 470.. extra memory chips and all.

it says that the 465 uses the same ram on the same pcb that the 470 so i would guess its got the same exact cards just a new sticker to drop prices and to take care of chips that were broken or needed way to much voltage.

if they work with the 470 bios and some 470 work with the 480 bios then can use a 465 with a 480 bios and get the same thing as a 470 with a 480 bios.

Ummm...no.

The GTX 480 PCB uses 12 x 128MB memory ICs for 1.536GB

The GTX 470 PCB uses 10 x 128MB for 1.28GB

The GTX 465 uses a GTX 470 PCB but in a 8 x 128 layout for 1.024GB

The reason GPU-Z is picking up additional memory is that it simply reads the BIOS of the card for clock speeds and identity and to it a GTX 470 = 1.28GB. So when you flash your card it tells GPU-Z that it is a GTX 470 and the program assumes it has 1.28GB. That is until Wiz gets information to the contrary from any board partner that releases a card with a larger amount of memory.

That's my point. The chips AREN'T on the PCB of the retail cards...

GTX 470 = 10 chips

GTX 465 = 8 chips

You can flash anything. Whether it works is another matter altogether. From what I understand, the GF100 cores are VERY well binned with very few "unlockable" cores failing the QA process at any one bin level.

This is probably why so few people I have talked to have been able to achieve a successful unlock and rather ended up bricking their cards.

IMO, until further research is done by people who have better access to cards than I do, I would avoid trying this unless you have a very good fall-back plan after your warranty on a bricked card becomes null and void. As for me, I'm not willing to give up any more cards to the chances of unlocking.

That was probably done to get cards into the hands of reviewers. Every review I have seen uses full retail samples and they all have 8 chips as I stated above. Voila:

I can attest to the fact that my two cards (one ASUS and one EVGA) also have 8 ICs installed.

Like I said, not enough research was done before posting this which could very well lead to some consumers wiping out their cards in one stroke. For all we know, the ONLY reason this card unlocked was because it was actually a flashed GTX 470 which was done to rush it into reviewer's hands.

Yes. However, the original program that many reviewers used to flash their cards with the retail fan speed profiles and dual monitor fix requires the card being flashed to be designated as the primary GPU in your system. You then boot from a flash drive that presents the command prompt and go from there.

My reference was to people who would be SOL in this situation if they don't have a second GPU which would be used to boot to Windows in order to set up with rescue media after the flash goes wrong on their primary GPU.

I'm not talking about myself here. I'm talking about the people who will take this guide, run with it in the hopes of increased performance and then end up with a paper weight. Or they'll just have to buy another card in order to boot into Windows and begin the BIOS recovery process.

i call bs... some manufacturers sent 470 cards with a 465 bios to reviewers, whether they did it on purpose i dont know... but i doubt actual retail cards will have 10 memory chips
they might still be unlockable... at least gpu wise...

i wouldnt be surprised if point of view and other card makers did this on purpose to boost sales of their 465 cards... :rolleyes:

the chances seem to be rather low though... not like back in the radeon 9xxx days where you had a 90% chance of unlocking successfully :/
still, extra for free is always nice :D
but dont buy a 465 EXPECTING it to become a 470 or 469 (470 with 256bit memory)

so even IF your 465 will unlock to a 470 gpu wise, it wont score as well as the unlocked card in the lab501 review, as it will only have 256bit memory...
the unlocked 465 in the lab501 review is basically a 470...

The language barrier indeed creates misunderstandings; the article stated not all the cards unlock and you should be aware of that, but we have added a few phrases here and there to make sure now people would understand, even trough Google translate, that there is a risk and you should at least make sure you have a card with all the 10 memory chips present. On the other hand, even the unlockable cards do not brick after reflashing, they can be recovered by reversing the process, using another card.

Unlocking is not possible on consumer cards, because they're hard locked, and physically lack two memory chips. It just may have been a case where NVIDIA rushed in GTX 470 modified to GTX 465.

its funny, this thread sounds exactly like the AMD X2 550 thread, when it was first announced that you could unlock it to 4 cores.

Xbitlabs GTX 465 gpu is a Qual Sample, so in my opinion Nvidia hasn't "cut" enough GF100-030-A3 gpus......may be there are some 10-15% GTX 465's in GTX 470 pcb's.- i mean GF100-275-A3.

Anyway when more people will buy some GTX 465 retail, than will see what is truth. Anyaway i recomand buying Point of View brand.
And another suggestion, can someone do a modded bios which use 320byte bus and 1024mb memory but unlocks 448 SP instead of 352?

I don't care about your opinions on either ATI or Nvidia products, but please do not make allegations with no basis whatsoever. If you look around the web you will see that all the reviewed Point of View GTX 465's are identical with the GTX 470 (the 2 extra memory chips included), and there are few other sources that claim they have unlocked the cards, although with no proof. Although not in english, the lab501 website has always offered valid and verified information, is well regarded in the region and WILL NOT start fake rumours.

The sample I tested had 10 chips of memory, so GPUz shows correct 1280MB of memory. Also, please note that this is a retail sample taken from the distributor not a sample from NVIDIA. The same card can be brought from the store from the same batch even :)

This is great and all but knowing Nvidia, they will lock the ability to unlock these cards down in the next wave of products. It's almost sad this news got out to the general public because that is how they will respond.

This makes absolutely no difference. If the card was sent DIRECTLY to you from the board partner prior to launch, you can't very well assume that retail boards will have the same layout. In this case it simply makes no economical sense for an AIB to use 10 chips on a board which is priced ~$100 lower than a GTX 470.

There is however one way to confirm how things went down: ask your contact at Point of View and see if they 'fess up. ;)

it's a BIOS replacement and they can't lock down the BIOS in case something arises like when it was first reviewed

They confirmed that their current boards are all like this, with 10 memory chips :). However, I am sure that in the future they will sell the real GTX 465 (GF100-030-A3 marking & 8 memory chips).

So far I have seen 8 memory chips on the following:

ASUS (in hand, would not unlock)
Gigabyte (in hand, would not unlock)
EVGA (in hand, would not unlock)
Zotac (in hand, would not unlock)
MSI (unknown flashing capabilities)
Galaxy (unknown flashing capabilities)

I am hoping to get an MSI card by the end of next week so I'll update when it arrives.

Trip down memory lane, remember when we where unlocking ATI Sapphie 9950's, then after that came X800 unlocking to X850's.

Those where the days free performance, if you researched correctly, had the right tools and the balls

It remembers me 9500 Pro, X800GTO² and X1800GTO² times.
That was very cool for the price but a little bit hard to find.

Concerning those GTX 465/GTX 470 unlocks, I will be patient and waiting for more feedbacks. Thanks for sharing buddies :up:

To recover it you need to place the dead card in the primary slot , any other way and the flashing wont work

Think its possible anyway if you know the card id in atiflash. Recoverd a 3870x2 since i did a bad flash on one of the gpus with a pci card :)

Haha. I have an ASUS card right here. With the software package. As I said: SmartDoctor + GamerOSD is all that's included. Unofficial tools? I am sure there are tons that the North American office has no access to. ;)

The ASUS tweak didn't work on an Inno3D card.

I'm thinking that if I flash it with an ASUS BIOS it might work.

I have an EVGA 465 that I reviewed for nVNews.

On their forums I've asked them if they plan to release a tool similar to what ASUS has made available.

... I'd like to do this by the book if possible (this coming from a guy who has made his share of Franken Motherboards/video cards in his day) and minimize risk IF I CAN, but time will tell. :p

Why in the world should they? This is an unofficial ASUS tool that wasn't released to the public and will work on very few (if any) retail cards. I don't see why EVGA would do such a thing.

risk? what risk? if it doesnt work it doesnt work. if you flash a bad bios then use a second video card and reflash the other card... i really dont see the risk, its not like its going to turn into a paper weight

I got a pny that I unlocked and stock vantage gpu score was 11,8xxx, and unlocked and overclocked went to 21k gpu score.
