Thats all I could find without removing anything.

PWM sink is very warm to the touch just idling.

No HT fluctuation but vcore reports wrong in both AOD and cpu-z.

Turbocore disabled and C&Q disabled works :up:

valid is 1 core on air. Thats what the chip should do and thats what it's doing on MSI so thats a good sign.

on vapo 5.0+......I can vantage at 4.6.....

Bios V1.4 have compatibility issues with 4870X2 and 5970. Boot up ok with other Gpus

Chew at this point what is your opition of this mobo, As of 5/18/10 a new bios has been released for the GRAF X card issue..

Will address other issues as we go but first I wanted to find a baseline of how the board should react before I toss newer gpu's at it that cause issues.

Currently i'm afraid to run prime 95 on it. PWM runs very warm. If it was mine i would to see if it would blow up but it's not mine so trying to be gentle ;)

So far noted 240 bus not bootable, 235 will instacrash prime due to memory, not my GTX2's though so i say 1800 6-6-6 is not bad :)

When Lan 1 or Lan 2 disabled in bios hang on windows splash/load screen.

When set OC dial to reset on boot, keep option comes back.

I usually don't take air benching to seriously or get competitive but my buddy mad22 is making my life difficult raising the bar all the time. :up:

thats 1.6v i just am not fond of tossing 1.6v on air.

1m is 14.50 running 32m now.

Room is 72F whatever that works out to in Celcius.

Hmmm...so there are a few issues with the board, specially the NB area and HTT clocking...I think MSI has made the same weak PWM setup here as they have done on the MSI GD70 790FX. Fine for x4, but not all that good for X6...

Not sure where you got that info on the NB......

MSI has always clocked NB higher than any other board. We were hitting 5000NB on retail chips np....I doubt this board is any diff as i've been up to 3400 on air so far.

1m and 32m is certainly not this boards strong point but ehh ran it to show you guys.

How much volts did you need on those 1600C6's for 1840 6-6-6 32M stable? Or can't you tell cause Dumo is not supposed to hear? :D

Yah we noted even with the other board it was stellar at validations, NB clocks insane and 3d was very good but was somewhat behind in 2d performance.

Likely something slack but nothing visible that can be changed to pull it in.

The ram is mine. Seems they needed 1.7 on MSI. I'm using them becasue thats what he has. Need to play with vidcards and drivers and issues next figure out bugs to list them then try the beta to see what it fixxes and breaks.

im a little lost, all these upper 4ghz runs are single core? on air? at about 1.5-1.6v? why do all cpuz show 6 core/threads?

Becasue cpu-z valid always shows 6 cores/threads on AMD.

The final 1m run and 32m run don't show any amount of cores considering it's covered ;)

wow so how does 1 core reach 4.8ghz, while on water keeping the same temps, 6 cores cant reach it?
is it from vdroop or just the power of the motherboard not being able to provide all that energy?

It's partly due to taking stress of the chip and also the fact that most chips do not have balanced cores. Yet to find a chip that does identical speeds across all cores at the same voltage.

Yah easily, I would say 3400 NB on msi = to 3000-3200 on asus/giga.

Probably a 100mhz discrepancy PP wise for core clocks to.

Should be a validation monster and likely decent in 3d like previous board if they didn't cut corners from previous boards PCI E bandwidth.

Doubt average users will notice any diff but benchers will in 2d.

well multi core currently is weaksauce, could be this chip though. If issues persist I will swap to a more balanced core chip to see if it makes a diff.

I was dissapointed iirc 4200 failed wprime 1024m.

Not quite sure I understand that question. Why doesn't your chip do it or why doesn't my chip do it?

If why doesn't my chip the answer is simple I have more than 1. 1 can't do high single core but is stable across all cores.

Another can't do stable across cores but has 2 really good cores.

I just described 2 out of 5.

Also many times i'm lazy or tend to be more skimpy with volts. I know the degradation points on air. Over 1.475 is degrade territory.

Killing a good ln2 chip on air is painfull and somewhat stupidity......killing it going for a result on ln2 is far less painfull.

So the msi is the best for 3d benching or asus and gigabyte are better? Currently looking to get into 3d benching

I'd say from what I've seen that the Crosshair 4 Formula is the best all around and that includes 3D. :shrug:

Not sure yet. Eventually I will get around to a 3d shootout with all 3 boards but likely not with dumo's. I'd like to compare on mature bios's across all boards.

The particular board your currently using is an excellent 3d03 board for instance.

The MSI looks itself to be a solid board...just nobody has really tested it much.

A friend of mine is reviewing a few boards, with the same CPU the Crosshair 4 Formula and Gigabyte GA-890FXA-UD7 did 200MHz more NB than the MSI 890FXA-GD70.

I'm torn between the two (this one and the Gigabyte), please swing me in a direction. The Gigabyte looks like the much nicer board but I'd have to import, which poses a problem should I need to return it under warranty.

I am are in the same boat!! I am torn between the ASUS and the GIGABYTE. The MSI is having a few to many issues. I wont a good stable platform that will run about 3.8ghz 24/7 on air without any problems...

I have some OC skills, but you do in days what it takes me months to come up with, and even then I never quite reach the hieghts you achieve!

It looks to me like the MSI board has alot of potential....
In a way I wish I wouldn't have been so impatient an gone for the CH4F so quickly (always been an MSI fan anyway;))...

It may just be my board, but the more I've tested it the HTRef still seems to be a serious problem, and maxes out around 285 HTRef.

I'm limited to a locked 1055, so HTRef plays a big factor, and that limit on my particular board plays a pretty big part in what I can achieve... :(

I know you put alot more time in on this stuff than I do bud, and it shows!

It's likely tied into memory. I tried 2/1 ratio on this board to. It's also not liking much over 350.

Yeah i was thinking something along those lines. Maybe the 3:10 divider will work better?

TBH I can not without shoooting myself in foot reccomend any brand or model board over another.

Have to understand that i play on delicate ground here.

Most hardware backed guys are "brand loyal"

I choose to remain neutral so as to help all endusers out.

Not many can get away with testing/reporting on any brand they like unless it's a review site or out of pocket.

What I can do is show results and point out potential issues so you can make the best decision that suits your needs.

I have no brand loyalty whatsoever after DFI stopped being the king they were. The only thing I won't buy in a hurry is another Asus board, as the CH4F is over $130 more than any other board locally.

So best thing to do is get the motherboard i want based on what i need for features, pcie slot order and other stuff like that and then try out the effiency in every benchmark,find the one with the best effiency and have fun with it ?

Ok, let me put it this way. It has come down to the MSI GD-70 and Gigabyte UD7 fitting my needs fine, what I want to know is does either have strange niggles like the Crosshair 4's floating HT speed? Does one have higher quality components than the other? Which has the better OC profiles? There are so few decent reviews out at the moment, and even if there were I don't want a review - I want an answer from someone who has actually USED the board properly.

I have to say; I am impressed with the MSI board from reading this thread. I thought the board was much slower than the CHIV at first, but it looks to handle itself quite well. I still am partial to Asus over MSI, but I can't say the MSI is terrible. If I wasn't waiting for the CHIV Extreme I would have a tough decision between the Formula and the GD70.

I wouldn't be running 4gig prime on this board personallly and i can't run it and won't run it because it's not my board....I can't afford to buy dumo a new one.

The chipset in on your motherboard.

The "NB" that CPU-Z and guys talk about is actually the Internal Memory Controller on the CPU die. That speed also controlls the speed of the L3 cache.

On the off chance that a waterblock is made for the PWM and NB area of this board, with your best guess, would this comfort you enough to load a 6 core fully for extended periods of time?

I've got a PWM block for the 790FX GD70, I assume that it will fit the 890FX variant as they share the same PWM and heatpipe setup. I don't have both boards on hand but I get paid the 10th and the 890FX should be coming my way. I will post some pics once it's good.

i´m afraid the block for the 790fx gd70 won´t fit the 890fx gd70, because there´s a capacitor in the way, that isn´t there on the 790fx.
if u have the anfitek block... i don´t know about other pwm blocks for the gd70.

Prime does nasty things to cheap boards and while the 890FX-GD70 might be an awesome board in alot of ways, it only has a 4+1 phase PWM. With a ~180w load (About 4 Ghz with 1.475v) That puts 45w on each primary phase. These are not heavy-duty volterra phases that EVGA uses on it's $400 Classified boards. They aren't built to withstand 45w on each phase. More like 35.

He doesn't want to kill Dumo's board...and even though a waterblock lowers PWM temps it's really no guarantee that the parts will hold up over rated spec.

i primed 4.1ghz@1.475v on the 790fx gd70. i bet this board can handle this too, if u cool the pwm properly. there´s a screenshot of 1hr prime blend in the gd70 thread.
i´m sure that the ones that fried their pwm either didn´t cool them, or they enabled some power saving functions in the bios that made the pwm go crazy.

i didnt think they were that bad w/ x4, hella people had that board & i never really saw complaints here. there has already been more fried boards w/ x6 than there was the entire time gd70 was around w/ x4..

i primed the :banana::banana::banana::banana: out of my 790fx-gd70 w/ 965c3 x4 (1.6v+) and never had problems, just didnt want to take the chance w/ x6

edit: and i thought i read one time that msi 4+1 is basically the same as asus "8+2" but just labeled differently.

Chew*,i have read a review on this board over hear in the UK,saying that early bios's dont have the option to disable "turbo core",is this correct,and has this option been dealt with in later bios's,as i am considering giving one a go,as i have 2 790fx gd70's,and never had any problems with MSI boards.Thank's in advance.:)

You guy's really are not having a discussion based on my decision are you? The answer is NO unless you want to send me the funds to cover the board.....I already stated at stock it's extremely warm and that i can't cover cost of board.

While some of you may have gotten a "good" GD70 how many of you had more than 1?

I can raise my hand ;). Can you? Case closed under my testing they can and will blow and i know exactly how to pop them instantly right at boot ;) 4+1 or 24 phase it doesn't matter. A mosfet that doesn't like heat or spiked load is what it is. Adding more doesn't make a diff or have you guys never seen an x58 blow up with XXXX amount of phases.

Moorhen, turbo disable is working fine.

I also remember reading that MSI's 4+1 phase was the same as Giga's 8+2 because 1/2 of the giga's where "ghost" fets or something like that. I don't know if that applies to Asus and the others or if it's even true.

My 790FX-GD70 has treated me extremely well and I'm willing to put some faith into MSI so I will be picking up the 890FX board and hopefully my waterblock fits.

I have the mATX GX version of this board (890GXM-G65) and the early BIOSes (1.0 and 1.2) did not have the option to disable it, but the most recent 1.6 does disable it. :)

Chanell the water block you are talking about WILL fit on the 890FX chipset.. I know for sure.....

awesome nickel plating on that anfi-tec block TBC! it would surely look good on your mobo, if the shipping cost wouldn't be too expensive i would have gotten it already

It's actually Chrome, Joel stopped doing nickel plating all together. Shipping cost is expensive, but I was lucky enough to pick mine up when I was in Europe of Christmas break.

I had my Supreme HF Cu plated, along with my sb heatsink. So the whole board is gonna be black, blue and chrome. :up:

Finally had time and fixed my 5970. see what drama this board has before i flash the latest.

Looking good dumo, but high ht etc 270 bus for 1800 ram fails to post. Board doing soem odd things with timings as well.

Yep and it's not a beta :) this one looks strong in 3d like it's predecessor.

If you want me to test phase I will. Rather not risk your board on ln2 though, there are open box buys popping up already :D just need to sell my NIB 4890 :)

I will finish bug reporting it on air first though, no reason it should not do 1333 divider with 270 bus. It's preety clear 1800 ram is stable so likely premature bios.

Still a bug with OC knob stuck on keep versus setting to reset. Will check lan disabled bug next and search for whatever else.

Its main purpose its for cold benching like the predecessor with early phenom II that you and MSIMAX benched:)

I'm still struggling with humidity in my benching room:(
Twice it gave me D5 on post code reader after 15 mins on LN2
Gotta invest in A/C which I hate in the summer

dumo you need to use conformal :), bench with water on board. I can conformal this for you but, you will never be able to rma it afterwards :(

Now alot of you hear me say msi runs slack perfromance.

Here's a perfect example. This chip maxxes at 4270 on almost all boards in 06 on air.....MSI is doing 4440mhz and performance is still slower.....this should be in 28K range easily and 8K+ cpu score.

On a side note a 1025mhz core stock cooler 5970 isn't something you see everyday :) Looks like 4 hours of custom bios work did it some wonders.

Any updates or new info? Just bought one of these myself and haven't had much of a chance to play around with it yet. One thing I noticed was the first 4 voltage options in the bios are not changeable. Am I missing something here?

using the wrong keys to change them?

Dont believe so. All the other voltage options allow me to just type in a number. The first 4 are stuck on Auto. What keys should i be hitting?
