What do you guys think of this? Might be pretty cheap to build up a few of these. I haven't had an Intel chip [aside from my XPS 1530 lappy] in ages. I'm not familiar with the performance of the Core i5/i3's.

I have always beleived that if you buy cheap boards you get cheap boards..and they die..

True, I've had an ECS board that was on sale at Fry's years ago. I returned it until I could get one to boot. Too bad it's ECS.
The ECS K7S5A was a decent office Socket A board, but it eventually died too
For the cost savings, I'd say stay away.

Cheapest graphics card <-- perhaps a G92 or a RV670/770 ($20-80)

Better deal on an H55/i3 package going at Fry's atm if you happen to live near one.
The WCG results snip beside it is my own H55/i3 HTPC.
Running flat out for SC week here at about 3.5.
Crunched better than I had thought it would actually.

Biostar is much MUCH better than ECS. Every brand has their cheap products, but I'd put faith in an *inexpensive* biostar.
I've been surprised by some inexpensive Biostar boards. I built around an AM2+ 790GX board with a Phenom X4 940 BE that quickly and pretty decently overclocked to 3.6GHz. RAM timings were tighter than I expected and it's been rock solid stable, from what I've heard, for closing in on a year now. That Biostar X58A board is supposed to be very good for good fast overclocking, though I know the original version didn't like tweaked settings.
I currently have this crunching at 4ghz with a 1055T X6 :up:
Low power usage, integrated GFX and overclocks like a champ (for a relatively cheap board) :up: :up: :up:

This is good little board. I prefer the P55M-GD45... it's just a little more and worth it in headroom. I owned both and still run the GD45.Quote:

lol no, i did not crunch with them. i knew about ECS reputation, so i did not risk a cruncher with it. it was a daily pentium4 machine that lasted over 4 years until retirement. the other was from the athlon A, socket 462 days, lasted over 7 years until retirement.Quote:

Even bclck of 140 at stock volts isn't stable.

The i3s, if you didn't know, do not have turbo.
The dual-core i5s do but they're so much more expensive I'm not sure what Intel is thinking the market for them might be.
my little i3-530 about doubles the output of my e6600 at equal clocks. And the bugger will clock to 4.3-4.5 no problem... It's head first into a wall after that though.Quote:

well since the i3 are alot cooler than the i5 750, you can clock them higher and get very close to the i5 750 number while eating a lot less power and being cooler. My i5 750 at 4100mhz is doing around 20-24k ppd

My i3-530 will only do ~17k clocked at 4.4gHz. It was very cheap though and very energy efficient (even at very high clocks). The difference in price for the total build from an equivalent i5-750 build though is only around $100. I don't know if this makes it a win over the 750. Her is my daily output of my i5 750 on boinc 6.10.45 at 4100mhz. Just dont take in account the 8k wcg point day. Something went terribly wrong with boinc client that day.

Well i messed up a bit with boinc setting to see if i could get better ppd and also solve a problem that i have now that i have some workunit that i have started but for some reason the calculation for them is stopped and its calculating other work unit so i tried to solve but i still havent found a solution for that.

Mezcal's results suggest about the same as the bloomfield for the 860. I would put this at the best bang if they reliably overclocked. If I was going to buy a dedicated cruncher right now, I'd put best bang on the 1055T. Considering power consumption and having an extra gpu laying around, I would probably lean towards an i5-750 build.

ATI GPU folding is going to create a little more of a dent on WCG as it uses more CPU power. nVidia, not so much.

I have started runing collatz on my ati hd5770 on may 13th with minimun cpu usage and i use Win 7 64 bit familial version with eset security as my anti-virus.I never keep any other apps running in the background and i rarely game so its pratically a dedicated cruncher. And with wcg and collatz running i have around 2.57gb of memory used. School is finished so i will let it run for week without touching anything and will post back my result to give you a better average. I am sure it could get better when i will completly set it as a dedicated cruncher with only light win 7 install, boinc and probably only everest for temp and setting. Oh and i also got a i3 530 from whitefiredragonthat should arrive at my home during this week so we also be able to give you my result on this one. I might also try some tweak testing on my i5 750 to see what you could possibly get me such high number. For the moment, i think it might be because of the high uncore speed or memory speed.Because every other thing is normal, might have to do also with os and a v which my dad choosed for the house because it didnt eated alot of cpu power.

be careful with that mobo; I had one with a mild oc and fried the mosfets I think they are called. make sure you have fans blowing on them
