Lazy fan syndrome has caused me to manually set (or in the case of ATI cards, reflash) fan parameters to keep them from cooking themselves for a long time. So those morons finally did it to the point where people notice the fan isnt doing a damn thing.

These drivers seem to be nothing but trouble. I think I'll skip 196.anything for now, until a driver comes out that people confirm to be working properly...
My Nvidia card has no fan control anyway (lazy custom PCB designers :down:) so if that's the only issue with the 196.75, I think I'll happily stick with them because I quite like the performance bumps here and there. :yepp: Bad for those cards who actually have fan control though, one might burn their card without even noticing...
I have experienced massive frame drops in BF BC2 using the new driver with my GTX280 but I never thought it was the drivers... hmm any fix for this?
no problems here. I've been using 196.75 for days and haven't encountered a single issue. My gpus fan is at 40% the same as every other nv driver I've used with this card.

I thought these drivers were a complete disaster, not sure if my fan worked or not, I thought it was buggy and I'm glad I reverted to the previous driver quickly. I would be pissed if these POS drivers killed my card as well.
I thought its a common knowledge here that with new drivers there could be fan issues. And usually it will affect card that's overclocked the most. That's why you use RivaTuner or EVGA Precision tool to set your fan speed. I always set my fan speed to 95% when i game. Sure your drivers suck when fan sits there:rolleyes: Did you at least checked the temp?
I wonder how they will treat RMA's of overheated cards due to this accident.

Further the WHQL testing takes a week or 2 wich is why Nvidia often releases a Beta after a new game release to quickly fix issues so they dont have to wait a week or 2 before they can launch a WHQL one.
Its one of the reasons why i never understood why ATI stopped releasing Beta drivers and started doing 1 official driver per month.

I noticed that both Furmark and Rivatuner report GPU temps about 24-25C higher than normal. Everest reports the same as previous drivers. Haven't experienced overheating due to water cooling.
I was thinking the same thing. 191.07 had the same problem, it was a great driver too. This doesn't effect me anyways since I run an HR-03GTX.Quote:

My cards started to cycle van speeds up then down, it started within 12hrs of installing. I rolled back. The gpus run too hot and are poorly design IMO, all that plastic crap and when you have 2 - 3 in sli its a fooking room heater. Someone needs to design the casing with a brain.
I have experienced this first had not the burnt gpu, but woke up the other morning of using the new drivers. I've been running gpugrid manually set fans to 100% before I went to bed. Came downstairs and no fan noise but computer was on I figured it restarted in the middle of the night and back to default. Go over to computer gpugrid still running, computer did not restart, and gpu fans were completely off on both my gtx295's. Go to check temp cores were sitting at 120C. Way to fail nvidia:down::down::down: Went back into precision and cranked the fans back to 100% and they worked.

def a problem w/them. Noticed the second I launched SC2 beta, screen would flicker and the game would constantly crash. Only has happened on SC2 though, playing LoL was fine.
I noticed that my BFG GTs250's fan was oscillating between a higher and lower speed every few seconds after installing the newer drivers. Thought something was screwy. It broke battlefield Vietnam too.....

Yeah, NVIDIA totally screwed up with these drivers alright, I thought they were buggy and they give me issues as well, and now the fan control does not work, WTF. Way to go NVIDIA, next time, they better test it properly before releasing it to the public. And people say NVIDIA's drivers work better than ATI, but this is unacceptable.

Been useing 196.75 for a while now , no problems , with Crysis Warhead , Just Cause 2 demo , SupCom 2 , AVP.
I got Evga 295 stock , temps and fan rpm same as always i have everest open on second monitor at all times.
Could it be only on specific brands ? :shrug:

I got no problems with this drivers and I use a 8800 GTS 512 (GTS 250 oc level) and the temps are quite normal.
80° at max during BC2 with stock cooler sounds nice, no ?
Massive fail from Nvidia. Always a bad sign when customers immediately identify driver problems when Nvidia are supposed to have thoroughly tested them before release.
its weird how its mainly the SC2 players are affected? I've got these drivers installed on an 8800gtx and a gtx260 and have had no problems with fan speeds, been playing bc2 all weekend...
Every news report about this goes back to the sc2 beta reports, its weird why there havent been other reports regarding this from other sources... Nvidia will pull the driver just due to the bad press, so its not an admission of guilt, if there is nothing wrong then chance are we'll have the 196.76 drivers in a day or two ;)

It's a common misconception that WHQL means that everything has to work right. WHQL only means the main driver connections work perfectly with the OS they are intended for. And that it works right with DirectX. It doesn't mean anything else really.
Maybe it is not the driver teams fault. They just were all using liquid cooled rigs and could not notice that the fans did not work. Or maybe they wanted it to run hotter for a new ad campaign:

This driver issue is exactly why I manually set fan speeds for gaming.
It will be interesting to find out how many cards were actually damaged due to this driver issue rather than from overclocking the heck out of them. This is a perfect opportunity for dishonest people to claim their overclocked-to-death cards were a casualty due to this problem.

The day couldn't start better...
Turned on my PC with my 9800GT in it, unknowing about this issue at hand after just installing the drivers some nights before (first time I fired up the comp with the new drivers), went to get coffee in the morning as I usually do during the computer start-up, I come back and the card's dead.
Tried to wait 15 mins for it to cool down, but it was to no avail. The fan goes up to 100% in the beginning, but the screen will not display anything except the usual "no signal".
I'm really starting to doubt the fact that Nvidia drivers are better than ATi, because it just fried my god damn card.
I remember during the 191.07 fiasco, that some people (using monitoring software) noticed that the gpu was overvolted and some mentioned the voltage was constantly fluctuating.Quote:

Anyway a 9800GT might be more susceptible to such issues in idle, as lower-end fan cards don't have massive fins to dissipate heat. If the fan stops you can basically stay cool until the heat capacity of the metal parts (not much) reach an equilibrium. And the 9800GT should use ~30+ watt at idle.
I'm not so sure that was 191.07, I noticed the core voltage on the gpu going up to 1.60 because of GPU-z 3.8, I saw a few other people reporting the same thing on other cards with volterra chips. Was that their monitoring software?Quote:

I have not been effected by this issue, but I rolled back to 196.34 BETA anyway as you cannot be too careful.
I just thought I would clarify that there are TWO issues with the 196.75 driver:
1) Fan control does not work on some cards correctly, the fan sticks at idle speeds of ~40% and stays there... even during heavy loading of the card.
This issue can be bypassed using either RivaTuner, eVGA precision, or MSI After Burner to create a fan profile. OR searching the registry and deleting all occurrences of RmThermalProviderInfo and RmThermalProviderNum.
And then rebooting your PC.
(Many thanks to Unwinder RivaTuner Creator for that information).
This would then force the driver to re-detect your sensor.
2) After system has been resumed from Standby the Graphics Card Fan does not re-engage. Therefore your system is running with the Graphics card fan @ 0%. This effects EVERYONE with a reference design nVidia card. Even if you do use eVGA, RivaTuner, or MSI Afterburner to control your fans, this issue can fry your card.
I would suggest rolling back your drivers because it is not worth the risk. nVidia have confirmed that they have located the cause of the issue and a fixed driver will be out shortly.
Although people who have non-reference cards such as the 2GB Pallit Cards, or Water Cooled cards are unaffected there has been rumours of WaterCooled GTX 295 cards running @ 80C when usually they run @ 53C underwater, so there could be a potential unconfirmed 3rd issue with this driver release. (Voltage regulation perhaps?!?)

Suggest that there is OFFICIAL confirmation from nVidia regarding Fan related issues in the 196.75 driver.
BababooeyHTJ is right, software can do strange things, which is why I think nVidia should have some sort of fail safe option which throttles the cards clock speeds or even shuts them down when they exceed a certain temperature. (This should be hard coded into the BIOS/firmware).
I hope that people who genuinely did have their cards fried by the 196.75 driver are compensated with replacement graphics cards... even IF their card is out of warranty.

What nvidia has done is PR damage control, they had two choices either ignore the issue and get flame for that, or recall a driver just in case there was a problem and look like they are being proactive.

and honestly fan control is a bit of a screw up but its no where closed to the monumental screw up that ATI did with the drivers for the 5 series where my nice new $400 card cant run dual screens without flashing and which STILL hasn't been corrected. On the plus side for these drivers, BFBC2 is running smoother for me compared to the last official 196 version.
FAN cannot goes OFF without some explict modification on the windows registry or some kind of catastrophic hardware failure, even if you fry the card the fan shall still spin on.Quote:

I had that problem with GPU-Z under 196.21 and noticed under Rivatuner that my card was drawing more than normal while idle and beforehand Sirius Sam HD made the card run quite a bit hotter than normal so I doubt that it was just readings. I rebooted and just ran GPU-Z without starting any other monitoring software to be sure that was the cause. I also saw a few people reporting GPU-Z 3.8 causing the same thing with ATI cards running the same volterra chips as well. Remember it's not hard to adjust the core voltage via software on these cards there are quite a few programs that do this.Quote:

My point is - there is MUCH more than a driver that can cause your card to die.
IMHO that is blind zealousfanboyism, nVidia DID mess up on this one. A new fixed driver should be out very soon.

i did a clean install of this driver and i havnt had any problems. my card folds 24/7 too. i guess my setup is immune to whatever issues this driver has.
I think that all we can say right now is that the driver may break your card if your not using liquid cooling. We know that even NVIDIA along with some users here have said that the problem only effects "some" users not "all" users. Therefore it is possible that the problem is caused by a driver conflict or some other error on some machines. These people likely have some similar link between them such as how they installed the driver or what sorts of programs/mods they have. It is also possible that it is not even the drivers fault and is some random app that somehow is messing with it. We just do not know, but we do know that if you use that driver there is a "chance" that your card will get fried.
For now we just need to warn as many people as we can to get off it and then sit back to hear what the real cause was. Or perhaps we could try to see if there is any common link between those who had the problem ourselves.
New forceware drivers are en route this week which will resolve this issue.

Nvidia drivers and products are perfect and sent to us by God jensen.
This problem was caused by a spy from ATI sneaking into Lord Jensen's HQ and replacing the 196.75 driver with a trojan that shuts the fan down on Nvidia cards.
