New i7 930!

I just upgraded from an XFX 780i with Q6600 and 4GB or ram, to an EVGA Classified 760 and 6GB of Corsair with a new i7 930 proc!

now, what to do with it....

I've ran some benches with the basic setup, no fancy cooling except the H50 with 2 unmatched pushpull fans :( and the best i can get stable (10 mins with LinX running at standard settings) is 4.3Ghz but that's slamming it with voltage. i can game with it @ 4.5Ghz but not much more than that. i'll realy have to tweak with it and spend a few hours getting it above 4.5 stable for a 24/7 OC. i guess i should be happy with 4.3Ghz on a 24/7 OC :shrug:

Time to overclock man!!!

Test around 4ghz to be on the best side of things...

the proc came in a box set with the same cooler as the 920. it ran me $288.99 and they had like 30 in stock. got some specs in my sig atm. im still kinda new @ overclocking, and i know jack :banana::banana::banana::banana::banana: about OCing the i7s on a brand of board ive never owned before.
im not so sure im gonna be happy with this asus. it doesnt have all the bells and whistles i'll never use like a classy or ud7 ... and the ram, not dominator ; ; sooo... but im still stoked as to being one of the first to have a 930!

They have them at fry's? I looked online and it didn't show any, just 920's.....The closest fry's from me is 2 hours away....

I tested a 930 --- 3001A117 and that cpu realy realy sucked .... 4.4 1.45v (not linx/prime stable only boot win ...... :eek: )

Just got it but it ran thru 25 runs of LinX and running a few hours of Prime Blend so far at these settings. Temps are hitting 85 degrees celcius max

Few things I noticed it has a 21x multi but turbo goes to 23x

I'm using the corsair H50 which performed a few degrees better than my original Thermalright Ultra 120Extreme. I would try to go higher but this is about the farthest I want to go with these temps.

lol it seems to run hotter than my i7 980X but then again i have not tried it with corsair H50

One thing is true tough this is good enough to put pressure on i7 920 D0 prices, its not that great but price decrease on the i7 920 D0 woould be a very good thing....

my old 920 very stable 4.5Ghz @ 1.40000 Vcore

If the rest av 930s are like these 3001A117, then it could actually increase the price of good old 920 :p:. These can't do anything to 920, but we can hopefully get some better 930-batches too, otherwise it would be too bad that they are replacing the 920.

It seams Intel has learned some lessons from last rounds. A good OC headroom on these late batches of "cheap" CPU could ruin Intel's fun with the money you are spending on those 980x.

So far they seem just Ok when compared to the 920. I hope someone gets a new stepping that shines but right now my 920 at 4510mhz at 1.4v is Prime stable and holding its own very well.

From my knowledge its just the new version of the 920. intel will just replace it with the 930. obvious in the name. Just like a 1999 honda civic, the 2000 honda civic had no changes other than paint color options and fabric color options. The D16 engine in both those cars was identical.

at least we can see a bump in stock performance with the 920-930s. 2.6Mhz - 2.8Mhz.

its just this year's version. i never expected to see this processor perform leaps and bounds better than any 920. in fact, i know some 920s will OC better than some 930s. its just the luck of the draw. and those 930s that will be great CPUs are still stacked up neatly behind counters and locked up in security cages, are all waiting to be purchased and tested. give it a month.then we'll see.

as far as my overall concern, the 920s could be good @ 4.2-4.5 on air, i expect the 930s to be capable of 4.4-4.7 on air.

That's a fair call I suppose....the i7 930s are slowly appearing here in AUS (after a quick Google search)...i'm thinking overclockability-wise the 920s (D0s) and 930s will be more or less similar....I guess time will tell when more and more 930s are available and tested.

whats the REAL difference between a 920 and a 930? I dont see anything different -.-

Initial results seem quite bad. I was holding off on buying a X58 platform because the 930 was so close. Should have gone with the 920 a month ago :p Let's hope these are just some unlucky bad clockers, and on average it will clock better than 920 :up:

If you don't do your homework, you will get a CPU based on "luck of the draw", but Intel doesn't manufacture CPU based on "luck of the draw". These guys do this for living and know exactly what they are getting out (with a small variations and within a predefined margin).

This kind of big variations that we have seen in i7-batches, are most probably intentional based on marked analyses and such, basically based on how AMD is expecting to compete in near future, and other business-factors.

I ordered a 960, should get it today or tomorrow. After seeing results with these new chips I have my doubts on how well it will OC.

Well this is something...

I bought 3 930's so far, 2 of the same batch which was 3001A187 (Great batch so it seems) and 1 of another batch 3001A135 (which was crap)! The best so far done 4.0ghz at only 1.17v-1.18v (load, and it was fluctuating back and fourth, but mostly on 1.17v)... Got up to 58c during load on the hottest core running linx and IBT! Not bad if you ask me... I also got 4.4ghz stable on air at 1.37v.

sure they can. those chips that are as good as what you mentioned just get binned higher. those 2008 week 45 and 49 were able to be binned higher, however demand for the 920 wasnt being met at that point in time, so they found themselves sold as 920's rather than 940's or 965's. thats just the way it goes sometimes

Are they going to release a W3530 soon as well? I would rather buy the Xeon equivalent of this 930.

why spend the extra money if the 930's are doing so dang well! 4.0ghz stable at 1.7v is pretty good last I checked! This was actually the best chip out of 13 of them that I know of that have been tested though.

Thats some good news on the 1.17v 930@4ghz. Some screenies would be nice *hint hint*

well for me(just my opinion) 4GHz w/1.17v is average.
now 4.2GHz w/1.17v is what i call a great chip.like the i7-920
3845-3849 batches.most of them can do 4.2ghz with 1.20v

Absolutely no doubt. My 3849B041 runs at 4510 at 1.38v 24/7.:D

4.0ghz@1.17vcore is above average for newer batch chips. Can you post a screen of your stability run?

There were older batch 920's mentioned that were just insane overclockers but they aren't making them like that anymore. I have a new i7-960 that is a real POS. It requires 1.456vcore load for 4400mhz. This is probably the worst chip I have had, I should have stayed with my not so good 920do, it did better than this. Live and learn I guess but I wont be buying "high end" chips again.

What batch# was your 930 ? At least a few of the 3001A187 chips out there seem to decent. I'm headed to Fry's in Phoenix, AZ tomorrow and may pick one up to try out, if they are even selling them yet.

welp i used to have one of them gem D0's. 4.62Ghz @ 1.4V cooled by a crappy CM V8 HSF. The only reason i couldn't squize more our of it was i hit the BCLK wall @ 220 on the Giga EX58-UDP4 with locked PCI-E... I know this screen doesn't prove anything but for what it's worth it was stable.

Please m8 I can do it also, but 1M spi is NOT prove for a processor to be stable.
Try to execute linx and it will be unstable, it's obvious on AIR, maybe on water also.
The point is - 4,6GHz 1,4V 4C/8T linx stable. In my opinion it's not possible on AIR. Stabilizing it will be impossible just because of the heatload.

Like i said, i know it doesn't prove anything.

I was too busy trying to get passed the 220 BCLK wall but it did pass 20 mins or so Prime95/Small FFT's/Blend runs. Yeah yeah i know, i should have ran Prime for atleast two weeks in a hot room.

Isn't the 930 just marketing hype by Intel. Knowing the amount of 920's out there Intel hopes that new customers will take the plunge and grab a "better" cpu that's available now rather than wait for a 980? The average Joe is not checking the o/c potential, just that 930 is a bigger number than 920.

trust me,zsamz says his i7 can do 4.6 on air it can.his i7-860 and his E8600 does nicely on air too so does all his d9 kits of ram
just look at his batch number.these are the batches that can do 4.2 with 1.168v

930 is not an alternative for the potential 980x-buyers, but I believe 2 opposite scenarios may happen right now, and it depends on Intel wants to keep the 45nm-line up going, or discontinue it in favor for 32nm Quads/Hexa-Cores soon.

If Intel wants to discontinue the Bloomfield-family, then may have good reasons for a last push to get rid of the rest of 45nm chips. In this scenario I would expect to see some good batches to lead the 930-pack at release date. In case, some good old 4845-49 batches (or similar new ones) will be out soon to lead the pack, because the hype around this will convince/excite the average Joe too.
Also, a scenario where Intel dumps the rest av 45nm, but Intel may try to keep this move as secret too, because with the news about cheap 32nm-quads in near future, nobody would buy the outdated 45nm-crap right now.

This 32nm-move will more depend on Intel's assessments of AMDs ability to compete in near future, than Intel's own desire, I believe.

On the other hand, if Intel feels no danger from AMD in near future, and wants to continue with the 45nm-line up, then the 930 can be a marking-hype for getting back to $280-price points, and In case we won't see many good 930-batches. Because in this scenario, a good OCer with x22 multi will kill the 960 totally, and make serious problems for 975 too. A good 930-batch will be a bad business for the rest av 45nm line up.

930 wasn't on Intel's road-maps, until it came out of the blue suddenly, recently!. Something that may indicate a last push before Intel is going to shift the whole line up to 32nm soon? I don't know, Just some speculations for now.

That's not so long ago, but yeah that 32-transition plan is the common understanding among the majority based on Intel's announced plans. But Intel may have good reasons to to keep the transition time secret, too. You may still be right, though.

I personally have a hard time to see how those expensive 975 and 960-45nm can survive a cheap 930 with x22 multi for another year, unless most 930-batches are really crappy OCer.

I don't know, yet.

I have a really crappy oc'ing 920 CO from launch that I want to get rid of and get either a, w3520, 920 DO, or the new 930. I have been trying to decide what would be the best option. or should i wait for the non Extreme 6 core? I will probably sell my core I7 that only does 3.8@ 1.352v for like $160 and just make up the rest.......

Those " non Extreme 6 core" are too far away in the fuature (based on current announced plans), but I've been speculating/hoping that we can see them earlier.

I guess the big question is: when will we see a 32nm Quad or Hexa-Core for us deadly on earth?. Because anything else would be obsolete compared to, actually.

@ BringerOdeath: imo wait till Q3 and get a Gulftown then... Not like 4GHz is not enough for anything you're doing atm.

Unless like 50% of Intel users OC their CPUs, there's no need for Intel to deliberately "strangle" the OC-ability of their "low-end" i7 chips. Good batches come and go, there will probably be decent ones out there if they produce the 930's for a while. But I certainly wouldn't buy one before we KNOW these good chips are in stock:)

I don't know if they are bust. I have only seen 3 new batches on this forum, all from Fry's, and one of them seams to be good, so far. I have also seen a great 45-batch a wile ago : Core i7 930 - Quick Air + LN2 and still hoping to see more of the same.

Well people, you just make my day nice again :) I was going to sell my actual Q9550 and Blackie for a new 930 and a decent mobo, not selling a :banana::banana::banana::banana: :P

I got a question, when the non Extreme Hexa-cores will arrive? They will be more expensive than a 930 but those 32nm will gave them nice OCing capabilities... Hope so :P

That's the big question. When are we going to see some cheap 32nm Quads/Hexa-Cores? Nobody knows for sure, yet.

I believe it will more depend on AMD's coming CPUs and plans, than Intel's desires or plans.

You can get a AMD Quad-Core for ~$100 today. That's really cheap, but Intel's current 45nm Quads-Cores still have a good lead on OCing and performance edge. If AMD can close this performance-gap (or at least Intel's assessments suggest it will happen in the near future), then Intel have to release some 32nm Quads/Hexa-Cores to keep the performance-gap to AMD, because Intel can't/don't want to compete on ~$100 price-point.

Nice. So my Q9550 will keep fighting till some new really nice cpus appears in the market.

Plus, what they said of Sandy Bridge? It will be more powerful than Westmere or it will be something like that with other things?

Looks like 930 = 920 with an unusable (for oc) 22x multi. No suprises here. Intel, give us 32nm quads or hexas for a reasonable price then I'll get excited.

So , maybe you can advise me for the better :D I'm thinking on a 1336 build , and I was thinking on a eVGA SLI motherboard , some Dominator GT , and I was if I should wait for i7 930 or buy already a i7 920 ? Which is better (OC , Wattage , ...) ? I don't want to spend a lot of money , so I'm not even thinking on those 32nm CPUs that there are to come :(

You're buying Dominator GT and EVGA (Classified I assume?) so you are already wasting a lot of money on tiny gains.
Get some G.Skill or OCZ RAM, Gigabyte X58A board and a good batch of 920 paying a few extra $$$ or just a random one as cheap as possible.

I was thinking on a eVGA SLI (that one after LE and before Classified :D - but used so I wont spend a LOT of money) . Those RAM is something that I've always loved so if I'm saving some on the motherboard , i thought spend a little more on RAM . The CPU was my only question , 'cause i7 930 is about to go out :rolleyes:

Any of the second gen boards will do great and yes the Dom GT is awesome though I agree with Zalbard on the ram. Right now for the money Gskill is kicking some major ass on many boards.

hmm get gskill ram mate much better then the dom gt's!! mobo go with what you need, no point being excessive :)but also remeber they all will be able to accept 32nm i7 later on so when 32 quads come you can always go to that
aswell :D

so depending on what you want to do have a system for a long time then upgrade eventually to 32nm 6core or 4core etc... or wait for new arch after this build .. its your call if the latter i wouldnt go too expensive.. buying used from here is a great way =)

i origionally wanted a Classified, but ended up getting an Asus P6T (base model) and im doin just fine. my gut says i "want" a classified, but my budget and wife say i dont "need" one... a UD5R would be good too. and also at fry's the dip shat sales guy told me the E758 EVGA mobo is a horible board. says it has bios problems all the time and he would "refuse" to sell me one... the moron prolly wouldnt have made any money if i bought that board. and he bashed it severely. pissed me off. EVGA has always made good stuff. im happy with my 930. it's not huiccupped yet. im positive i can push it further but i dont really know how to do it.

My Batch # was 3001A135

Well you certainly have the right hardware. I have a P6T in one of my systems with a 920 that can do 226 which is decent for the vanilla.

I think 3rd & 4th digits matter the most. So, 45th to 49th week.

If you don't overclock the 930, whats then full speed of the CPU when Turbo Boost is enabled?

If you don't overclock the 930, whats then full speed of the CPU when Turbo Boost is enabled?

yea, im gonna be swapping out my P6T for an E760 Classified. im gonna have to go back to my old Q6600 for the time being. /sulk
but on the bright side, i'll have more options to keep my rig cooler down the road.

Yes, I have tried one as well and it was the worst out of the bunch. You want a 3001A187.

Yup, I have tested several of the 930 chips so far, and by far the 3001A187 batch is the best performer! I got 4.0ghz stable at 1.8v on one of the chips... I have bought and sold several of them. :up:

im glad that i have one of the better batches so far! my first post is proof i have a 3001A187! i can get it to 4.5 so far, but i cant do much at that speed. if i load up a game, like Mass effect 2 or Crysis Warhead, it plays superior for about 5 mins, then locks the game, but windows continues to run no prob... seems the games close for some reason, but i dont get a BSOD unless im not running enough voltage.

Why buy an I7 930 (45nm) when you can buy a Xeon 32nm chip on or about March 16?

Because it costs $700 less?

Those Xeon 32nm's are probably going to all be $1,000+, not even in the same ballpark as a 930/920.

My fry's quit selling the dang things until the 28th :( It sucks, I have bought 7 of them so far and they absolutely refused to sell me one, even after throwing a fit LOL:down:

I went to The fry's in Sacramento yesterday and the girl said it was in stock, but when she tried to sell it to me the computer said they could not be sold until a certain date. This was pretty lame a sI had to drive 2 hours to Sacramento.....I gues they weren't supposed to be selling them before and maybe got scolded by intel and had to stop selling them!

I think "Sam Oslo" answered my post about this on page 2.

thats funny and all kinds of sad that Fry's would sell them for 2 weeks, and then stop selling them. My guess is they want to clear out thier invnetory on the 920s. i used to work for Fry's and thier buyers would sometimes make the most rediculous decissions when it came to hot items. once they took the commission on a $10,000 TV and made it $300 for 2 days. then they made the commission $0 from then on. why stock a tv that costs 10k, and not pay a sales person to sell it?

i think these 930's were released to keep the market in intel's favor. what has AMD done in the last 3 months to excite the market? the Radeon 5900 GPUs? well, nVidia had a card that was on the same level as ATI's over a year ago. GTX295. now the GTX300 series are comming and AMD wont have bullet in thier clip to fire at the army of nVidia customers for a great deal of time... what i mean is that durring this economy, we're seeing the big corperations pull out all the stops and make the best technology they can, in hopes of shutting out the competition. im afraid we wont see gains as strong as we're seeing now, in the next 3-4 years. so companies are releasing all they got now, (or very soon) to try and gain market share.

think about it, how often does the average end user upgrade thier PC? (average, not people like us that get the best every year or so) about 4-6 years. so, while the economy is down, the companies are selling what they can. because they wont be seeing progress in sales the way they are now.

No, what is really sad is that my fry's was freaking completely out of 920's and the manager I was throwing a fit to really wanted to sell me one of the 930's but couldn't due to his "system not letting him do it"
