I finally got my new rig up and running. After months of planning and delays and almost a full year after selling off my Q9450/P45 setup I'm glad more than ever to be back on an AMD platform. :D

The specs are in my sig. I have been playing around the past few hours and I ended up with the clocks in my sig. The setup is being ran open air as of now because I haven't had the time to finish my case mod and put it all back together.

I'm still stock cooling at the moment so I don't want to push it any further till I build my loop and get it under water. The only HS I have lying around is a Enzo Ultra-X and I don't think that would net me much over the stock cooler.

I'd like to thank the whole XS AMD community and especially those whose words have helped me get where I am now and understand the gem that is the Phenom 2. Chew, MSIMAX, Tony, DaveBurt, Charged, Titan, Simon and more. You guys are :banana::banana::banana::banana:ing awesome and make this forum an extremely pleasing place to be. :D

This is all I've got for now. I will run through it through some stability tests later but as of now I'm just kinda tinkering and toying around a bit and getting a feel for the bios. I'm going to update to the 1.63b bios and see what i can do with 1600mhz and a little voltage. I also just noticed I'm running my card on an 8x lane. haha.

That is a good start, or heck nice daily clock. I keep my 955 at 3.6ghz 2400NB 1.32v 24/7. It runs cool fast and not a ton of power draw. Keep us updated.:up:

I can get a couple of those tomorrow. Ive actually got a nice little setup here, with a large window fan blowing cold air right onto the pc. Do you think it would be worth it to swap the stock cooler for the Enzotech and MX3?

I'm excited as well but it will be a couple weeks as i'm ordering a couple parts a paycheck and I have to rivet my case back together.

Maybe you can post your overclocks here once you do get to install a loop? I just want to make sure if the mosfets can handle high voltages properly since I've read some stuff on the net about GD70 boards with their mosfets blowing up :confused: lol.

The thread will be updated frequently over the next couple of weeks. I'm installing/downloading PC/3D Mark Vantage at the moment so I will update with scores from that as well as pictures and other stuff.

I'm extremely pleased with the board so far. I had an extremely tough choice choosing between the Giga and this. I chose this and so far I'm happy. If I were able to experiment with Phase or LN2 I would of gone with the Giga but as far as water/air go I'm happy with the MSI :D. Don't get me wrong though, I'm still going to figure out how to put a fan over the PWM section once the loop is installed.

First 3D Mark Run.

My first 3D Mark Run. I did notice that it detects my Caviar Black as my main HDD and not my SSD. I'm not too familiar with futuremark stuff how do these scores look?

I went ahead and replaced the stock cooler with the Enzotech and some MX-3. I had a little scare with a semi-bent pin but I remained cool and all is well. :D

My idle temps, according to overdrive, went from 43-45 with the stock cooler to 30-35 with the Enzotech. I also updated my bios to 1.63B so I'm going to start fiddling with the memory and see if I can get 1600 6-6-6 out of this kit.

I will post some pics of the Enzo setup later.

Finally got Windows to boot with 1600mhz 6-6-6-24 @ 1.85v. I increased the volts by .01 until I got it to boot. I would like to figure out what kind of IC's I have before I begin any rigorous testing. I need to know if these are voltage tolerant or not. I don't want to kill them. :D

I just spent the past hour or so doing some experimenting with my board/cpu. I was trying to find the lowest amount of volts needed for the CPU to successfully boot into windows at a given speed. I figured it would be a good thing to know when and a good starting point when trying to oc/optimize. I wrote it down on a little note card.

The voltages are as set in the bios.

I need at least:

1.455v for 4ghz
1.435v for 3.9ghz
1.365v for 3.8ghz
1.305v for 3.7ghz
1.265v for 3.6ghz
1.225v for 3.5ghz
1.225v for 3.4ghz

The system wouldn't boot with anything less than 1.225v @ stock speed so I stopped there.

I also noticed this gray area when settings voltages, which may or may not of thrown of my test but I am unable to set my voltage in between the ranges of 1.435v-1.405v. I can go higher than 1.435v but not lower and I can go lower than 1.405v but not higher. Anyone know why that is?

kickass system you have there.

I keep my 720BE at 3.6GHz for daily use as well. Its a good speed for me, because Its stable under IntelBurnTest with my fans at 5v across the board. Quietest system I've built so far. If you want to get fancy, you can also test undervolting and use Custom p-states using PhenomMsrTweaker. I have my 720BE scaling down to 1.00v / 2.00GHz at idle / nighttime

What voltage settings are you using to set cpu voltage?

I use cpu vdd voltage as a rough setting and cpu voltage as an offset up or down from the cpu vdd v.

I've been using CPU VDD with CPU Voltage on Auto. What is the difference between the two?

The offset +- is smaller with cpu v vs. cpu vdd. Cpu v is centered on cpu vdd value.

Cpu vdd adjust voltage in 0.0125v steps
Cpu v adjust voltage(offset) in 0.01v steps centered on Cpu vdd

Example

Cpu Vdd = 1.3625
Cpu v- = 1.352 / Cpu v+ = 1.372

If you raise Cpu Vdd = 1.375
Cpu v = 1.365v or 1.385v
depending if you added or subtracted voltage in first step

Your GPU score is near 9000, and what i see as normal in a 5870 is between 17000 and 18000 GPU Score. How on earth is that happening?

I'm not too sure. I thought it was low but not that bad. It's reading the card as a 5850 and it's possible it's running it in 2d clocks. I've got it pushed to 900/1300mhz in CCC. :(

I'm using the latest drivers too.

its probably GPU throttling this time if you clock them too high the "throttle" etc on purpose to stop any problems, try lower the oc a tad like 800/1200 (just to be safe) and see if your score shoots up

I will try and do that. I just uninstalled the 8.66RC6 drivers and I'm installing the RC7's atm. I can't imagine that'd be the case though, I'm running open air with plenty of fans and the cards fan is @ 60%. :/ We shall see, thank you for the input.

I received a couple more parts today for my wc'ing loop. UPS dropped off a box with a HK3.0 LT, Micro Res V2 and 12 feet of Primoflex UV Blue. I will update with pictures later and possibly some rough pictures of what I have done to the case so far.

I just need to purchase my fittings, fans and the pump and I'll be ready to set up the loop. I am unsure of which pump I want though. I am thinking it's going to be between DDC 3.25 or the MCP655. I'm mulling over the idea of setting up a 2nd loop for the 5870 and possibly a 2nd card in the coming months.

I'm also a little worried about tubing size I picked up it's 1/2 ID 3/4 OD and it's a lot larger than I had imagined. I personally like the look of larger tubing but I'm afraid it might be hard to work with and from the looks of things it might not be able to fit it on the HK3.0.

I've been doing a little testing with no avail. I re-ran the benchmark on a completely stock system and the results where same but obviously a little less than before. I than tried running it with my current OC but with default card clocks and still no dice. I'm a little stumped here I even tried increasing the fan speed to 75% and running.

I'm a little miffed by this. I've also tried the 8.66RC6 and RC7 drivers and both net me the same ballpark performance. I also don't seem to be the only person with this issue. I did a google search and came up with a few people having the same problem with hardware ranging from i5/i7/Ph2 to Core 2's.

My games all run beautifully though. :(

This was done on the system in my sig using a 4870/512 OC'd to 790/1090...
Your score does seem a little low for a 5870.

Using CPU-Z check to make sure your PCI-e Link Width is set to 16x (circled in SS).

I can't imagine it making a huge difference, but it's worth looking into. ;)
If it's set at 8x you'll have to find and set it in BIOS.

I'm not the only one then!

I have been pulling my hair out with these low scores. (Lightman I'm sure will attest to that :))
I have support tickets in with both AMD and MSI trying to get on top of it.

I was concerned there was something wrong with my 5870 so I had a spare Gigabyte MA790FXT-UD5P here along with a 955 and some Cl9 corsair 1600mhz ram and surprise, surprise all my 3D mark scores were where they should be.
There is definitely something up with the GD-70 and the 5870's.

Now that I have found this thread I will send it off to MSI for a bit of extra proof...If you don't mind.

I would like to get this sorted fast because I'm getting choppy video.

Funny thing is I had crossfired 4870's and they worked perfectly in this board.

I will keep in touch if I hear anything useful. :up:

Some good news

After contacting MSI support they have got back to me with a new bios (1.7B5) and it has fixed the problem.
The board and card are now working correctly together.

It's definitely a bios problem as I had been given some new drivers to try which didn't help at all but the bios certainly did. :up:

If any GD70/5870 owners need access to this bios pls PM me.

House Cleaning Update. :D

Been really busy lately with work and things. This weekend was also sweetest day plus the Girlfriends B-day so that kinda made things kinda hard on the watercooling front. I wasn't able to order anymore parts for my loop this week.

I'm hoping to be able to get my loop up and running before I leave for Europe in December but we'll see how life treats me. :D

I've done some other work with my comp when I had the time. I updated my Agility to the latest Firmware 1.4 for trim support. I flashed my 5870 to the Asus bios and I updated my motherboard bios to the 1.7B5 that's supposed to fix the 5870 issue.

I'm also waiting on a kit of ram that can do 1600 6-6-6 with a decent price tag.

Here's my latest Vantage Run, for some reason GPU-Z didn't detect my clocks but I'm running 1000/1300 1.2v. I still think MSI has some headway to be made in the 5870 compatibility department. I believe this GPU score still seems a little low. That's all I've got for now.

It's been stable in everything I've thrown at it. Vantage, Stalker, CSS, TF2. I played a 6 hour session of Fallout 3 with no troubles last night.

The 965 really is a good chip.

i forgot...u have AIR cooling or watter? I can too with ~1.385V at 3800 MHz, but its stable only for superpi and easyly benchmarks, think, u can get 4 GHz stable ,-) (or 3950+ MHz)

That gpu score does seem a little low. I'm getting around that score with my cpu and card @ stock clocks. Apart from me using 8Gb ram our systems are pretty much identical.
I'm using Windows 7 x64 build 7100.

I've got everything setup next to the window like in the pictures.

4ghz is my ultimate goal. I've been playing in the bios now and testing as much as I could make time for the past couple of weeks and I've come to the conclusion that I'm not going to get much farther than I am now with the tools available. I should hopefully be completing my loop in the next few weeks if all goes as planned. I'm going on a trip to Europe in December so I'm trying to save for that.

After everything is up and running I would really like to see if I can push 4ghz for 24/7 under water. It appears as if I have a nice chip on my hands. I'd like to get a kit that can do 1600 6-6-6 so I can actually start to see how the nb is going to treat me.

Here's a 3D Mark Run that I did for fun. It seems as if I need a better CPU cooler or my chip has an extremely weak NB. It wouldn't complete 3DMark @ any less than 1.43v. :/

CPU @ 3800 1.4v, NB @ 2800 1.43v, and RAM @ 1600 6-6-6-24 1.65v.

GPU @ 1000/1300 @ 1.2v

I've spent the good chunk of the morning here doing some testing with my card and Vantage.

I started tweaking and I found that 1300mhz on the RAM was a pretty happy medium. It gave me a healthy boost in performance over stock clocks and also allowed me to gradually raise my core clock without errors. I found that anything over 1300 caused 3DMark to crash when the core clock was higher than 1075.

These are done with the Cat 9.11 Beta and the MSI 1.7b7 Bios.

I decided not to post SS's for bandwidth's sake but here are the GPU scores of my past few couple of runs:

1000/1300 = 15,330
1050/1300 = 17,731
1065/1300 = 18,445
1075/1300 = 18,616
1085/1300 = 18,755
1090/1300 = 18,831
1095/1300 = 18,794

It seems that I begin to lose performance when the core was clocked higher than 1095 and I couldn't even get Vantage to complete a run with the core clock @ 1100. I stopped there.

I'm going to run the same test's with the ram clocked @ 1325 and 1350 once I find some time.

Lastly, I'm going to leave you with an SS of one of my last runs. It's a 1090/1300 Run. The score is a wee bit lower than stated above but this run was done after a reboot because 3D Mark did not like 1100/1300 and that's the way the cookie crumbles. I decided to do a full run with these clocks and called it a night. The sun is coming up soon which means my room will get warmer. I had a 4gig valid but I lost it in a reformat. The 3.8ghz in my sig is the highest i have atm.
