ATI HD 4770 reference @ 1000MHz-stock cooling with 4770 Top bios and Asus stuff

Decided to flash one of my new ATI HD4770 to the Asus TOP bios so now I can use CCC to 1000Mhz GPU , 1200MHz GDDR5 and Asus Smart doctor's voltage adjustment works fine ^^ and now 1000MHz @ 1.21v and GGDR5 @ 4580MHz is possible just with fan @ 100% with is just crazy for that cheap card

well its not safe to use cz at these speed have started to show random green lines and artifacts on the display while using Vantage.

Would be fun to LN2 one of these :D

That is not a big feat, i can do 960/1100 with my 4890 all day long and that is with the older process at stock vcore. I was expecting something in the 1200mhz for the core :(. Hope the new process gets more refined for the high end cards in the 58x0 generation.

What do you expect ? the 55nm tech is as good as it will get. And 40 still brandnew and not optimised. + the HD4770 is made for low power consumption. And it should not get faster becuase then it will hurt HD4850 and HD4870 sales. But it can be clocked at 900 with no problem.

Also dont forget that the HD4890 stock is running higher voltages then a HD4870. (1.31v vs 1.25V). I think we will see 1100+ air with those HD4770 cards. And more in the future when the 40nm process gets more mature.

It works for the Sapphire cards. I bought two of them and flashing was no problems at all. But the clocks were crap, I got 870MHz on the core and only 860MHz on memory for the best of the two on stock volts. When added volts up to 1.2 volts I got 930MHz on the core and memory the same :banana::banana::banana::banana:ty clock. Max temp were 78c in my fairly warm room. Not happy with these cards, especially mems...they should do at least 1000MHz.

Drivers are crap ofcourse, based on Catalyst 9.2. But it's just to far from acceptable for me to give faith in correction with better drivers.:shrug:

Strange that you mem OC is so low :| i realy hope my card will do well. Else i will keep the HD4850 :) and put this one in a other PC.

In that case i guess PcCI2iminal has some handpicked samples.

I will also try a other cooler on it. And i will try to install a 4p fan connector so i can fan control it trough the bios. But i will first check if the ASUS TOP bios has support for fan control.

Owh well i will know whats what soon enough :) Getting the card today. First run will be tonight. I will also try to use the 9.4 driver. Forcing it to be a HD4850 or something. Sometimes that works aswell.

Yes, considering it's AMD branded cards with the skimpy cooler and lite PWM I believe they can be handpicked. Gonna be interesting to see what your card can do.:D

UHmm 850-1100 so far. Cant use the Asus tool because my max clocks in that tool are 850-900 :S And if i use it to set the clocks and then use CCC its setting my clocks back to stock.

How did you guy's go over those clocks with smartdoctor ? if i close it i think it sets the voltage back to normal again. I will try to measure it.

Edit: Never mind. Its holding its voltages when closed. You need to set your voltage with smart doctor. Then close it. Open CCC and set your clocks. I noticed that if i set max 1.3. I get 1.324 idle and a whooping 1.4 at load. And then it crashed. With 1.1 (1.17v load) its running just fine. So ill be testing that. i also got a Zalman VF1000 over here that not being used. I will first max out at stock cooler and then Try the VF1000 to see if it helps.

I tested my sapphire and it maxes out at 860-1115 fur mark stable error free. I could get 900 core with 1.15v. Everything over 1.15 would make it worse. RBE is not supporting the HD4770 voltage tweaks yet so i'm sticking to 860-1115 for now. If the suppor comes i could upp it to 900-1125/1150.

100% fan speed did not do much over stock. It boosted it only 10-15 MHz max.

Furmark 1680x1050 750-850:
Score: 3236
FPS Min: 45
FPS Max: 80
FPS Avg: 54
Time: 60000 ms

To: Furmark 1680x1050 860-1115:
Score: 4185
FPS Min: 60
FPS Max: 100
FPS Avg: 70
Time: 60000 ms

at almost stock mem was 50 MHz higher then stock. Cant go lower anymore with this top BIOS :P But a not to bad score for a 89 euro card :)

Astennu, intersting clocks. Especially the mems. It really bugs me that both my cards not even managed 900MHz on the memory. Did you use the drivers that came with the card, or did you force the Catalyst 9.4 like you said?

Not totaly true see the stopic starter. He is getting 1000 MHz out of a light version with the cut down power regulators. (but i guess they are handpicked). But still you dont need the extra power regulators you need a good chip. But i think the OC editions will have those better binned chips and will clock higher. And Maybe allow a higher v-mod voltage.

They are out, just not available in retail.

I think we are all thinking the same, I am just surprised to see stock voltage achieve this kind of clock (when compared to other cards).

Yes, and I tried with XFX's 9.5 drivers for HD4770 yesterday. Still can't clock the mems over 860MHz. Must be a POS batch.:shrug:

You should check the voltage on that memory. The chips are rated at 1Ghz and I get 1.2Ghz out of mine.

How did you force it as a HD 4800? I suppose you must have some kind of hardware-ID for the HD 4770 card?

As for the Sapphire's, they have been sent back. I now have a XFX HD 4770 with the reference cooler WITHOUT the heat pipes...!!!

They have actually shipped the card without the heatpipes, now there are two holes there instead. :shakes:

Anyway, the card will not do more than 920MHz on the core...no matter what volts I give. That's with the ASUS TOP bios. Temps are very quickly climbing up towards 90C when above 1 volt. The memory is maxing out at 880MHz, same :banana::banana::banana::banana: as the two Sapphires I got. The modules are Qimondas idgv51-05a1f1c-40x, that is rated to 1000MHz.

I will try the new Catalyst 9.5 that is supposed to be released today, and also try forcing it as a HD 4800...if no improvment is made on the memory I will ditch the whole idea with a HD 4770 and not look back.

it seems the drivers for xp dont work with overclocking the ram, they overclock well for me in vista/7 but cant go above stock on xp.

HD 4770s are cheap, got high overclocking potential and perform really well - considering their price. :up: ATI HD 4xxx was definitely one of the best hardware in 2008. I'm glad that ATi created some nice cards to carry on the legacy :cool:

Lets hope this is the reason. my powercolor 4770 is at 800 and cannot go up or even down. not even by 1MHz !!!!

so it is confirmed! In win7 64b and latest 9.4 drivers the card can be easily OC 850/830
yes the memory cannot go far, but it's ok. Thus it was a matter of drivers i guess. Better drivers better OC ;)

How can 830MHz on the memory be ok when the reviews all did 1100+??

I just got my XFX 4770 w/ ref cooler. I got it at 830c/850m with no problems under vista 64 w 9.5 drivers.
I might try the asus bios and see if i can go higher, but I'm hesitant.

Do you guys think the memory needs heatsinks on them.

But so far so good, I went from the 4850 to 4770. overclocked it is def. smoother. Not to mention i maybe able to get more out of her.

I can only use the tool from ATI catalyst since rivatuner never worked for me :(
As for the memory chips, i saw from the chip maker that those particular
chips can reach the limit of 1000MHz with the reference voltage of 1.5V.
The max safe voltage can be 2 volts. but i didn't saw any reference to any heatsinks.
I believe that the PCB design is efficient enough for the memory chips to be cooled by the airflow of the fan. so little room for heatsinks !

Got my 4th HD 4770 yesterday and finally I hit a flawless card. It does 1200MHz Furmark stable on the RAM, with the Asus TOP bios. I can even get it up to
1215MHz before it starts to show a couple of minor dots in stresstesting. This is with a XFX card and the crippled reference cooler, meaning it doesn't get any cooling or airflow at all over the memorychips.

Core does 880MHz at 1volt, which is default for the XFX cards. It is quite obvious that these 40nm chips are very sensitive to heat, anything over 65c and it freezes. This crippled cooler is really crappy, card gets hot like hell. It picks up a lot of heat from the scorching RAMs as well.

I will do some modding to the card later on this week, looks like it has some potential.:up:

Considering the cheap components of the board, can this card handle high volts? This cards seems specialized for low energy consumption and considering the cooling on this board, what long term effect will this have?

Unfortunately i cannot flash my Powercolor to ASUS top firmware, it says that it is not
compatible, or something like that. Maybe i have to try a special firmware update tool.

RAM voltage is stock, I assume 1.5 volt.

I'm pretty sure you can flash your card, use atiflash with switches -f -p to force it.

"atiflash -f -p 0 biosname.bin" (without "")

about the RAM voltage mine it is reported as ~1.25V. so it isn't 1.5V or i get a wrong report.

Pretty moce cards man.New ATi cards seem to overclock great.....

Clint, how did You bybass the 1200MHz limit? Is there any possible way to go over 1000MHz on GPU also? If I changed the limits on Asus TOP BIOS, then the drivers can't "read" the card (known problem with most HD4xxx series).

After maxing out the CCC I went with Rivatuner, no problem passing 1200MHz there. As for core I haven't even tried so high, need better cooler first. I doubt it will do 1GHz though.

I must say that cooler is a piece of art, weighs in at a whopping 500g or so...all copper. They simply don't make them heatsinks that good anymore.;)

Well, if you have said 1050MHz on 1.34v, and not 1150MHz on 1.34v I could have believed you. But this just doesn't add up, sorry.:shrug:

1150MHz is impossible, at least if we are talking about anything remotely usable/stable.

I you mean running vantage remotely usable/stable you are right but just wait i am not at hom to bench the card for you i have testet 15 of the XfX HD4770 cards and they all do 1075mhz+ on a copper heatsink from a hd4870x2 and 1.34v wit asus top bios and asus smart doctor

all the cards do easely 1000/1200mhz on stock cooler with asus top bios and 1.34v

What video 4770 may cause the above frequencies with lower voltage but with this bios?

Why should i use furmark i use the cards for bench and they kan bench 2001-2003-2005-2006-vantage no problem

He is using ASUS TOP BIOS on his card. You will need to flash yours to get 1GHz core in CCC ;)

First a greeting.
I have two ATI SAPPHIRE HD4770 in crossfire, with asusbios to flash, windows xp Servipack 3, net framework 3.5. Install the latest asus drivers (catalyst 9.87) as well as the latest version of SmartDoctor.
My problem is that the first card up correctly the tension and lets me get to 970/1050 on core and ram. The problem is the second card. I noticed that the SmartDoctor not able to raise the tension of the second card, and I can only get the second card to 825/1000.
My motherboard is: DFI JR 790GX-M3H5.
I beg you to tell me how you could get the second card in crossfire with the SmartDoctor. That is, driver versions are installed on your computer.

I dont think smartdoctor can control the voltage of multiple cards on XP.

If you look at the second photo, the one with the headline "cross HD4770 @1000/1100 vgpu@1.239v:" in gpuz it is clear that is xp and are two cards in crossfire. So he asked as pvhk had.

in my case, yes! no way to "clock" both card (vgpu) with cat 9.7/9.8!
But there is another condition: i have to use an asus mb (maximus 2gene) because it does not work with my DFI JR P45...

on max 2 gene + cat 9.5 : i only have to apply the vgpu w/smartdoctor once for all to raise both vgpu!!!

i can clock both of my 4770s to 935/1150 in crossfire at 1.225v using cat 9.7/9.8, with single cards (crossfire disabled) both can reach 1000/1200 no problem

so ocing both cards work up to 935 @1.225 using smartdoc but not @1000 for both card!

okay tested cat 9.5 and clocked both of my 4770s to 1000/1200 in crossfire. thanks

What model hd4770 video card can change the memory and GPU frequencies with low voltage and change bios (asus top bios) but with native HDMI ? I want to buy a video card hd4770

Does anyone know what would be safe voltages (vGPU) to use for a 24/7 full load overclock ?

I'm running 1000/850@1.1v using an after market cooler.

GPU temp is 50C mem 54C Shader 56C

Is that not just 10% over standard VGPU? My guess is that'll be fine :up: What bios are you using out of curiosity?

OK Thanks, I just wasn't sure if the standard baseline was 0.9 or 1.0v, it's a lot different to CPU overclocking ;) I was just very surprised that whatever clock I hit it stuck - no errors :eek: Which got me thinking that maybe I'm pushing to many volts through it. I guess not then ;)

Yes the BIOS looks like being the Asus TOP as downloaded through these forums. If you have any other recommendations let me know.

Card is a bog standard reference 4770 branded VTX.
