This is great news, AMD are really using the advantage that their current process is really good, (trying to make up for their rather poor 65nm Phenoms)
I hope the quads perform well, and also come in at a still affordable price point, as thats the thing that makes them worth buying over the i7

before some people start commenting on those caches. I think they calculated l2+l3, also the reason why you see 8 for a quad and 7 for a dualthere is no way AMD is going to increase the current phenom2 line to 8MB on L3.

Phenom to get fat cache

After spending some time trying to work out what Google's translator makes of the story, we gave up.

In short the nuts and bolts of it are:

A quad-core (Deneb) Phenom II X4 955 should tip up next month, running at 3.2GHz with 8MB cache.

In May comes a Dual Core (Callisto) Phenom II X2 550 running at 3.1GHz with 7MB cache.

Also in May comes a Phenom II X2 545 running at 3.0GHz and also sporting 7MB of cache.

We can't really see the point of that though.

We'd ask AMD about the story but all its PR representatives in the UK have been sacked so there's not much point in making a fuss until the US wakes up anyhow. µ

Intel isn't the only one saying what I said right after the deal was made. Sooner or later AMD will have to sell products with higher ASP.

i doubt intel will make new line up for the lower end market and if they do it will be with 32nm soo....

its a tough call but i think amd wont regret doing this though

Yes it is a tough call but even Intel knows folks are value shopping when times are tough. Not having very compelling low-end products during a market downturn is a no-no. Intel and AMD are watching how the Atom took the market by storm. They are even being sold in Low-end desktops. Intel isn't about to concede the low end without a fight IMHO. That doesn't make much sense.

Margins can go down but on the other side Dirck Myer said that this move made by AMD will cut expenses from 1.5Bilion to 2Bilion dollars if you sum everything until the end of the year.
You don't have to pay fabs expenses, you don't have to pay Fab investments, you don´t have to pay 3000 more jobs each month.

Intel says: "It´s a bad move, it will be very bad" and on the other side is going to shift Intel ATOM prodution from Intel Fabs to TSMC. So says one thing and do other thing.

So do the math and AMD did it. And Intel is doing them also. Conclusion: Put TSMC building Atom.

Hm, i hope for x4 945 will be to Black Edition, not only x4 955 :-)

Because TSMC can under cut Intel's own FAB with an already low margin Atom. Intel already talked about TSMC doing NAND for them anyway. If AMD were only talking about low Margin products, that'd be fine but clearly they're not. AMD Saxonia GmbH, (company within a Company) look them and their contract up? AMD also paid less for the parts within their company than what they'll have to pay Abu-Daddy. Big risk! AMD will need pay a lower contract price then higher ASP and brisk sales to just break even. Yes, I could be wrong.

True, but then again, I doubt there are many companies out there that have innovated more than AMD has, especially in the last decade, and look where that got them. Anywho, my money is on something happening in that space from Apple, AMD, AMD/ATI before the end of March. As always, I could be wrong! :D

You might be right but I remember when folks were saying Apple would never use Intel. When the first announcement was made, the headline was Hell Freezes over.:rofl: Same thing happened when Dell went AMD. I remember folks on this forum saying AMD had a better chance to be the next Apple processor than Intel. I believe anything is possible if the deal is right.

last time i checked TSMC produced 40nm products and Intel 45nm, altough TSMC is a generic process and not as good voor highly demanding things like complex CPU's (not including Atom, which is a simple low freq CPU)
But TSMC can produce higly low freq GPU's, as long as they don't have to produce things above 2Ghz everything is fine i think

For Atom and Larrabee to meet Intel's goals for each product, they are going to require Intel's 32nm process.

Also I don't agree that Atom is NOT a complex CPU when you take into account it's power characteristics and die size, nor do I feel TSMC's by comparison simplified 40nm process compares that well now to Intel's 45nm process, let alone the 32nm process Intel will use in Q4 09 and beyond.

Atom isn't complex, it is an in-order architecture for example

btw, TSMC will not be able to use Intel's 32nm process, they don't have HKMG, and they don't use standard nodes (like 45nm for example) so how on earth will they be able to do Intel's 32nm process? Their next full node step is 28nm...

Go read again on why TSMC gonna make Atoms. Its all about competitors that are using ARM chips that Intel wants to use Atoms. Its about SoC designs and since Intel is a direct SoC competitor they dont want Intel to fab their SoC designs aswell.

Intel only stopped production in a 130nm factory that was to be closed a few months later anyway.

The "They" I was referring to was the goals that Intel has set for Atom and Larrabee. i.e. cracking into the markets where their toughest competitors are.

Anyway, I think lots of sources, but also stores, are messing that L3 amount up badly. It's 2MB L2 and 6MB L3, not just 8MB or even worse, 8MB L3 (although it comes down to the same level of stupidity).

Im curious whether AMD is going to release FX CPU's sometime again with Deneb or just sod it all and have BE's:rolleyes: In the end FX's do require another special feature over BE's now since BE's took over FX's features.

Phenom II X4 910's are already up for pre-order, ~250 Euro. But not really interesting since it only has a 13x multi and so you'd need a motherboard able to do 300Mhz+ HTTto have some good results.
