Why Quick Discconects are so Awesome

Well, cuz of my friends, well i think there more enemies then friends. :rofl:

I underwent a SLI bridge change.

I wanted to show you guys how easy it was because i had quick disconnects.

The problem with QD's is they are flow killers. But on your GPU loop, the 3-4C's wont help your overclocking at all.

So i am gonna show you why losing those couple of C's is WORTH it on your GPU loop.

My Loop started like this:

What i needed to do was pull the QD's off so i can get at the cards and drain the cards without card removal.

Tissue is the best leak detector. It bunches up and you know instantly when its wet. I put them on my QD's because you'll leak a few drops. Not a lot, but still a few drops.

Once QD's were pulled, i needed to use my drain line QD:

You guys know the rest... So i'll skip the elementry stuff.

Once water was evacuated from the cards, i pulled the SLI bridge:

Installed a Bitspower Dplug. To make it work, you need 2 koolance couplers.

After bridge was installed, i do my leak test live. I once again put tissue arround the new modified area, and do another 5 hour leak test while live.

So guys tell me now. Is the 3-4C really worth the convenice QD's bring? Total SLI bridge time replacement took no more then 10min.

great little log of the whole process. It looks simple enough., and great idea using another QD for a drain line! :up:

I'd be surprised if it's even 3-4C....blowing through a coupled QD is pretty easy. But I suppose I'll have some actual numbers soon enough :wasntme:

He was like might as well.

I put in the extra flash for snipe, and skinnee tho.

If the performance drop is 3 - 4c, I have to reconsider my plans :(

im picking high numbers.

in actuality it depends on your cooling supply.

For me it would be around that much cuz i have more heat on my gpu line then cpu line.
2 x HD4870X2 = massive heat station.

A good thing to note is that we actually rate all our QDCs for total flow-through.

VL2 have a 6mm flow-through
VL3 have a 10mm flow-through
and a week or so ago we released VL4 with a 13mm flow-through :)

Picking the right shut-off valve can almost eliminate a noticeable performance drop.

The ones you have are very selective.

I use QD's from Koolance and it is SOOOOO easy to fill and drain that I don't mind swapping stuff out anymore. I use the VL3's and I don't think they hurt me at all.

Its definitely something we have considered, it will depend on demand and feedback from customers regarding current items. :)

you know koolance just created the vl4 model for there qdc
they are extreme flow i dont think they will kill your flow at all i saw them at performance-pcs

Question though, what are the inner springs made out of?

Oh, and any plans for a VL# line with female G1/4 ends? :) VL4s with the ability to switch barbs/fittings would be nice :) (like VL4s with 10mm compressions :cool: )

Thats why I have mine setup the same way!

I never even knew these existed. The ability to have shutoffs on both sides of a piece in the loop would make working on just a part of the loops so much easier. Wish I had know about these!

I need to get some of the VL4 QD's then.

although that seems very handy for you. I don't really think draining a system is all that troublesome. ;)

I think it depends on how often you need to disconnect it and what sort of setup you have.

I've gotta get some of these when I move my stuff over to my case. I need one big one for a drain, and want to use them on other parts in case all hell would break loose and I'd need to pull the loop down.

I'm at that stage now where I've got it setup and running good, but don;t wanna take it apart becasue it's gonna be a pain to break loose. I'm gonna have to use some vise grips and paper towels in strategic locations. :)

At least I don't have a AA Battery for a T-Line Plug now. :ROTF:

But the vl3's have 10mm flow through so why would you 13mm flow with 10mm tubing? :shrug:

10mm flow through isn't quite the same as 10mm tubing...much, MUCH more restrictive than a 2in strip of tubing :p:

It's basically a 10mm bore with lots of 'stuff' in the way, heh.

13mm flow through would hopefully alleviate some of the restriction :)

The inner springs are stainless steel.

I don't think we will put a female g14 thread on them but we do have a male g1/4 thread available on both the male and female nozzles. Along with a female/female adapter (ADT-XFF) you could do exactly what you're asking :)

Also my entire board and 4 gpu's are fed though that line. :X

On load, my coolant will be about 2C over ambients on the gpu line while running fur mark.

I figure your right about the 1-2C mark, but as i said at start, im picking high numbers here.

wait, you can connect those qd to a waterblock? The pictures were confusing. Definately picking one up now. I always thought that it was for drain because i saw no male thread sticking out to screw on to wb.

The VL4 line has not had their g1/4 threaded pieces released yet, but VL2 and VL3 do have them available (VL2-MG, VL2-FG and VL3-MG, VL3-FG are their skus). :D

They have made the removal of my cooling system really easy. Thanks to the qd's I can isolate the part of my loop that leaked and fix/test it separately. A grate time saver :up:

VL3-F10-16S goes inside of VL3-MG right? I screw VL3-MG to the waterblock/pump and vl3-f10-16s goes over it correct? 24 bucks is expensive though...

in all quick discconects, you need 1 male and 1 female.

i think you need to keep VL3 with VL3's and VL2 with VL2, and also VL4's with VL4s.

I so wish I had QDs. I wanted them, but I couldn't find any when I was on my search. I ended up getting those compression fittings and at slightly over 100 bucks for them, I'm afraid to know what the QDs would run!

I just might get some though, cause I'm really thinking of getting a second loop so my video doesn't have to share. I'll give it a few more months and then see.

What I did was buy a female that has g1/4 thread and a male one which has a 1/2 barb:

Male - Barb

I bought 2 pairs, so I could put one on each hole on the radiator. Then, when dismantling my loop, the radiator comes of easily :D

BTW, It's true that when you disconnect these, amount of water gets out, but nothing a little intuitiveness with tissue paper can't fix :)

Dean....Do you guys have any 3/8 - 5/8 QD elbows? (possibly rotary)

Nice idea! This would allow me to keep all my 3/8 without losing any flow. Hell you could QD everything! ;D

These QD's of Koolance are realy cool, especialy the threaded pieces.

To bad a single coupler costs about 10 euro's in europe. So, for the connection of one block, i would spend as much cash on the QD's as on the block it self.

Despite of the high prieces, I am thinking about using these in a chilled liquid loop as these QD's use a silicone O-ring making them suitable for sub-zero temps.

Its good to see the first dedicated QD's for computer cooling.:up:

Hey Kap, I use male and female Koolance QD's on both of my 24/7 DCing Q6600's for my external water cooling containers (the containers sit on my window sill). Both the male and female QD's I got came with threads to go through my cases. (one case Antec 900 and the other an older Antec)

I noticed if I used the QD's that I had from a Nautilus 500 it caused my MCP350 to whine (restrictions :confused:), but with the Koolance QD's things were quiet. (no noticeable whine) :D

These pics were taken many moons ago. The boxen on the left has the Nautilus 500 QD's that seemed to cause the MCP350 to whine (since replaced with more Koolance QD's) and on the right are the bulkhead Koolance QD's. If you can see the Koolance QD's have threads and I've since made a plate for the pressure line to pass through the 120mm exhaust fan hole and a washer for the return in the lower line from a MCW60-R WB on a eVGA 8800GS VGA card :)

I know the pics ain't too clear, but if you really scwint your eyeballs you can see the threads for bulkhead fitting. I hope it kinda' helps :D

This is so you dont have to drain your loop to unplug an element right? Sounds nice if this is now also in high flow versions.

I was looking at those Koolance QD's when I was putting my new stuff together a couple weeks back. I had read a lot of posts around here stating that QD's were such flow killers, they weren't worth using. So I ordered these instead. They provide almost the same functionality as the QD's, with the drawback of them putting kinks or weak spots in your line. What I've been doing is using them to stop the flow, then sticking a stopper in the end of the tube so I could release the clamp quickly, hoping to reduce the crimping damage. So far, they've worked great. Kinda pricey, though.

I'll definitely be getting the vl4's as time and budget allow.
