AMD Phenom II X4: Highest AMD score in 3DM06 ever

Hi all!

Now is the time to start 3DM06 benching with AMD platform. Team Finland already hit great scores in 3DM05, but we have to move forward :up:

So, I benched 3DM06 last night with my new toys:

ASUS M4A79 Deluxe
2x 4870X2 @ 800/950 (again :rolleyes:)
Very cheap DDR2 ram 2x 1GB.. can do 800MHz 5-5-5-18 2T :D
Thermaltake 1200W toughpower
Windows 7 Beta (32-bit)

Note that my CPU can go high in MHZ, but NB is not clocking at the same time. They can clock well separately, but not together.

NB is inside the CPU, so it is already cooled with LN2. It's all about this sample. New CPU's can do easily 4GHz NB speed.

So.. When we can find sample, which can do 4GHz+ on NB and high MHz in 06, scores will be a lot better. NB is affecting the efficiency greatly.

The performance is better than in yorkfield, if we can find good CPU. DDR3 will help also in the future :up:

There was weird bug in this CPU.. only other value could be high, CPU speed or NB :shrug:

We used this one in Chicago event. This did 3DM06 CPU test at 6GHz in there, but I couldn't replicate this yesterday.

AM3 boards can be used with AM2 CPU's and with DDR2, but AM3 board with DDR3 will be usable only with AM3 CPU's.. (how unclear sentence can be :D)

come on...see your CPUZ stepping 1. It's AM3 CPU, not AM2. AM3 CPU can match AM2/AM3 mobos, but AM2 CPU cannot use on AM3 mobo.


I know this cpu is AM3 945 ES. Early AM2 ES cannot show stepping 1 on CPUZ.

Andre, c'mon why so aggressive? .. that CPU is from Chicago event (beginning of December) where me and SF3D first tested Phenom II X4 with LN2.

CPU is from old batch and has HT cold bug as you can see from screenshots (HT = 1 GHz). New CPUs with AMD's latest 45 nm process don't have any cold bug with HT and NB overclock alot higher.

Current AM2+ CPUs works just fine on AM3 motherboards like M4A79 Deluxe _IF_ they are equipped with DDR2 memory connectors. M4A79-T Deluxe is AM3 motherboard with DDR3 memory connectors and current DDR2 Phenom II CPUs won't work with it.

SF3D, good job with '06. Next target +6 GHz on all cores and +33k ;)

OK, just ask macci comfirm that. Why do CPUZ show AM3 CPU stepping? Some AM3 already sent to some guys before you went to Chicago event.

CPUZ can read all AM2 cpus no problem at all. It's only AM3 CPU different. Prove it I am wrong.

Why not say it's early AM3? So it has cold HT issue. Or AMD want to say they have 2 different cpuid on AM2? CPUZ already can read all AM2 stepping no problem at all. It only cannot read very new cpu, such as AM3.

very nice scores on the amd platform there petri :toast: how are you liking clocking with windows 7?

Impressive scores with a crippled chip and crippled memory :up: Once you have some nice GMH/GKX that'll do DDR2-1200C4 and a 4GHz NB those scores will take off :eek:

Any possibility of another LHe run when you either get a new CPU or AM3 samples? Might be time to use an evaporator design for a pot rather than an open LN2 pot :shrug:

AM2 cpu only has DDR2 memory control. It cannot worked at DDR3 mobos. All DDR3 mobos named AM3.

I start to test AM3 mobo now. I know 940/920 AM2 CPUs on AM3 mobo no post at all. Why did you say AM2 cpu worked at AM3 mobos????? Who told you that?? You test AM3 mobos???

What Sampsa said is that AM2+ CPUs will work in AM3 motherboards IF those motherboards are DDR2 based,like the one(ASUS M4A79 Deluxe) Petri used in the OP.That motherboard is branded like AM3 since it has BIOS support for the AM3 CPUs out-of-the-box,while the socket(as I believe it) is still AM2+.

There will be "real" AM3 motherboards that will have DDR3 memory support.In those boards,AM2+ CPUs won't work.

If SF3D said that it was 940 ES(AM2+) than I have no reason to think otherwise.
As for the other dude's thread(user cdawall),his chip is probably not recognized properly.IN any case,Sampsa or SF3D didn't brake anything,they just used the same CPUs they did back in Chicago event,like they mentioned countless times.
But there is no need for me to defend them,since there is nothing to defend and they can speak for themselves(like they do).It's all straight forward...

This is the last time I say this. This CPU is AM2+.

maybe my question got lost a bit in all this ... - Any problems you had with CFX? Or will you go with that next time? I am preparing a Windows 7 installation also currently and would be happy about any information as I plan to do 3x4870 again. A pic shows 2 cards in the system so I am wondering a bit ;)

M4A79 Deluxe, is a great motherboard, though we need a ROG edition from Asus to take AMD's new products in a higher level.:up:

CFX is working just like in Vista. GPU-Z is bugged even more in Win7.

Talk about Win7 being faster than XP are nonsense. Performance is almost identical with Vista or even a bit worse.

As far as I know this CPU is early 940 AM2+ ES, earlier revision/stepping than press samples / first retail parts.

I'm waiting UPS to deliver AM3 CPU for testing on Monday together with Asus M4A79-T Deluxe (AM3 + DDR3), and it ain't even X4..

no problem, thanks a lot for the infos. I read some tests meanwhile with Intel and they showed a good advantage for 7 compared to vista. I have the feeling the difference is not that much on AMD.
For GPUz I read that there are somtetimes problems even opening it. so it's good to know you can't trust the GPUz window yet under windows 7. I personally have problems installing my drivers on w7 (some old ones bundled with GPU) but ran Vantage with 2 cards...then I realized (another time) my basic edition wouldn't give me any scores without internet connection and I decided to give up on that another time :p: Then I returned here, watching your opening post, dreaming of finally get kicking with LN2 again and see 6 gig like you've done many times :D

Superresults by SF3D and rest.., lifting AMD like this will bring alot of new benchers to the scen...! :-)
.., bout W7.., nice thing bout benching is that experiences/handling and approach are different.., makes it more exiting! , times like this.., AMD rising.., new plattforms.., a forrest of HW and on top of that a new OS.., golden age for benching :-)

STEvil- MCW 30 is working pretty well. I use 1.45V for both cores on that card and depending of room temp, idle is around 35-38c and load 45-50c. Other card is around 70C with default voltage and fan running auto, so it is worth it.

SoF- Try 8.12 drivers. Those installed without problems.

Phenom II X3 720BE and X4 810 is AM3 jep? Sorry, but cpu-z 1.49 in this moment showing me the same things as my X4 940BE. And how you want recognise AM3 if you see the same as AM2+?

Well.. it's not our problem at the moment. CPU-Z 1.49.1 or something will fix it for sure. It should be out before NDA ends for AM3 parts.

Like I wrote in first post, new memory sticks are coming. They just couldn't make it to this session. Memory speed and latencies + higher NB will give nice boost to the score.

This was just the start of the 06 testing. CPU did already 6GHz in Chicago and we have some other samples to test. It will take some time to prepare, but let's see how far we can get.

Superpi + other results were not my priority in that session. Win7 is not fast in some of those tests. So.. If I'm interested in the future, I could try some Spi1M.

Windows 7 doesn't seem so bad after all for '06, i have the 64 bit version now but it's not good with 3d mark 01 and superpi, not great at all, haven't tried '06 yet.

Those cards might not be supported well (yet). I hope you have some other cards, cause it would be nice to see some results.

I have heard, that there is many users with problems at the moment with Win 7. I had some yesterday.. 3Dmark tests wouldn't start at all. Then I installed cards again and it was working again. Well... it is still beta :shrug:

Only driver working as far as I know is 185.20.., Others work too (181.20, 181.22).., but not for bench... :-) .., red cards work fine too.. both with W7 beta drivers and 8.12

First I read "W7 faster than XP is pure nonsense"..,:eek: so I belived what you said and erased all W7.., then furter down I read "just how I feel" :rolleyes:

Now I must install again to actually see for my self how it is..., and.., isnt that exactly what benching is about.., different individual experiences..?

Have you tried the software based voltage mod for VT11xx pwm? Its comfirmed working on 4850/4870 but Im not sure about 4870x2. Might help you get the extra mhz needed for 06 :)

What mod are you referring too?

I have all the mods needed, if I like to do them :) I can go up to 1.65V with LN2.

I just didn't want to have any troubles, so I used safe values.

We will see better scores later and with more VGA clocks. Those are only helping in GT3, so it's not really important at this point.

i have high hopes for the 9.1s, as the delay drags on and on for the drivers to be released. hopefully, they will make w7 work properly for me (or at least well enough to get some benches in) if not you will see a bunch of xp and server2008 runs very soon.

Yes, but that was CPU produced in week 0825. Way older than most of the samples we've seen from Phenom II.
I think lower end AM3 will still be Stepping 2 for some time, but X4 950 will be Stepping 3 or in other words RB-C3.

According to my latest info many of the early Phenom II X4 engineering samples (earlier than press samples) are actually AM3 parts so yes, this CPU might be as well.

SF3D counted the pins, 940. (940 contacts for AM2 processors, where 938 contacts for AM3 processors).

This thread is all about AMD 3DM06 score. Why do we have to talk about some CPU steppings here. We have used this CPU first time in December and nobody didn't even mention it back then :)

If someone have some real AM3 CPU's and is feeling bad, cause can't post results, why should I care.. There is NDA for those results and I can't post anything either.

I though this preliminary score would have made different kind of conversation, but no.

This thread is all about AMD 3DM06 score. Why do we have to talk about some CPU steppings here. We have used this CPU first time in December and nobody didn't even mention it back then :)

If someone have some real AM3 CPU's and is feeling bad, cause can't post results, why should I care.. There is NDA for those results and I can't post anything either.

I though this preliminary score would have made different kind of conversation, but no.

Sorry about my reply made some troubles. You are right. This thread talked about 3D06 score, not for what AM3 stepping you have.

Great 06 score on AMD you have.
