4870x2 CF - i7 920 @4.4+ Ghz Air Benching DFI Style!

HD4870x2 CrossfireX with i7 920 still on TRUE120 air cooling :)

While my HIS HD4870x2 can do 850-860Mhz on GPU, my Gigabyte HD4870x2 hits a wall at <840Mhz, so settled for 837Mhz on GPU in CrossfireX. Weird GPUZ v0.31 isn't registering my ATI CCC set GPU/MEM clocks ??

System peak wattage draw = ~915 watts! (probably need a beefier psu ? )

• 3dmark06 @837/985 = 29,412
• 3dmark05 @837/995 = 37,175
• 3dmark2003 @837/1000 = 127,708 <- some reason I haven't been able to publish 3dmark2003 results with HD4870x2 lately ??
• 3dmark vantage = unable to bench keep getting create pixel shader failed message in cpu tests even at stock cpu/gpu settings ? Vista SP2 Beta 64bit related ?

thanks, i just hit the unlock padlock pictured in overdrive to get to adjust the sliders :)

sweet clocking there eva :toast: btw how much does that ocz sdd drive help in 3d (or does it help at all) ?? im starting my own 3d benchies with the dfi board today i just have to get my vmods on my evga 9800 GTX to work like they should :D

looking back I don't think it was the psu holding me back as 915W was draw from wall so at 80% efficiency means around 730W draw on system.

Thanks both my i7 920 3836A758 can do this on air cooling - one needs a bit more vcore but it also has better max bclk needing less cpu vtt :) Only have my Kayl Black Frozen SS 1/4HP here but it doesn't have LGA1366 mounting gear only LGA775 so will be a while.. H20 coming up next though as I just ordered a Fesser 480 rad which I'll pair up with Swiftech Apogee GTZ. Wonder if that is enough for 4.6+ HT enabled 3dmark ???

First time using HD4870x2 CF on Win7 64bit RC OS and first time I've broken 30K mark in 3dmark06 and did it without even touching GPU/MEM clocks yet! :D

Eva great benching mate. I suppose that 4870X2s are still worth benching, mainly 'cause I just saw a kick-ass 2k6 30k score with 2 of 'em @ stock clocks :D :up:

Thanks.. i'm just glad the drivers work - wasn't too great driver wise with vista 64bit sp2 and previous drivers even for pulling off stock runs in vantage had app errors hehe.

Have you noticed as well "the boost" you get when benching Vantage on Windows 7 ? ;)

@makaka: I don't want to start an off topic in eva's thread, but I wouldn't personally spend like 1200€ to buy 3 IRams and bench ONLY PCMark05 ... It's a shame that the breathtaking performance deriving from SSDs in Raid 0 is limited due to these stupid caps :( We want a new PCMark Futuremark ...

Haven't noticed much specifically as i don't play with 3d benchies much these days compared to in the past - but 3dmark06 definitely a big boost for me. Vantage i couldn't get to run at all on Vista SP2 64bit due to drivers for some reason so didn't compare much at all. I just so glad i can bench vantage now without problems!!!! YAY :)

Yeap you're right ;) 3DMark06 works great with XP when on single card and Windows 7 when on multi-card setups. :D To hell with Vista ... they are only for PCMark05 :ROTF:

hello great scores i have 2x HIS 4870x2 in single i can run 3dm06 at 839/965 whitout overvolt whit stock cooling ... i had problems for overclock the x2 until today ... i find out rivatuner 2.24 works whit catalyst 8.12 but i dont know if it works also whit 9.4 or 9.5 why i just burnt the rampage x today under phase ( hope is not the cpu qx9650 )
i see you use a catalyst control center that allows you to overclock the gpu over 800mhz ... until 900mhz !!!! i dont know where to get it .... it works for both 4870x2 when in cf ?!
please give me a link or tell me how to get it ... please
in the next days i want to buy a gigabyte ex58 extreme whit i7 920 d0 and kingstone hx pc16000 cl8 3x1gb and i want see 30k in 3dm06 :D:D think is possible

Both my 4870x2 as listed in first post specs list are flashed to Asus 4870x2 TOP bios which maxes at 900mhz GPU in CCC for single and crossfire usage. Only downside is GPUZ won't show correct overclocked gpu/mem settings after flashing http://i4memory.com/f18/hd4870x2-cro...op-bios-11471/

i have another question ... your OS in the bench is windows 7 ultimate right ?! is it the RC version or what ....?!do you had to install some fix files ?! i m skeptish about win7 ... it sims to work good on your system just the 3dm03 dont work ....in win vista it also dont works 3dm03 ?!why win7 and not vista 64 ?!better performance ?!
