I'm going to be doing that on one of my Clover rigs once I get some decent cooling on it. I think I know just the cooler. Been living way too long with ill-fitting Coolermasters.

Yea, on your clovers instead of booting at 2667/8mb/1066 they would boot at 3000/8mb/1333 and thats using JUST the 9 multi.Quote:

Pin mods are the same for all CPUs on the same socket, LGA 771 in this case.
Noob question: What does the Bsel mod do? I googled it and found just a bunch of Oc'ing threads. If someone could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. Thanks
On clovers it makes cpus boot at 1333 instead of 1066 and on harpers 1333->1600 :)

You have it backwards: all Clovers are FSB266 chips, Harpers are FSB333 or FSB400 chips. :p: Is voltage automatically adjusted for a decent clock speed or can a BSEL mod fail because it doesn't have enough voltage?

True, I got the names wrong.
BSEL mod does not adjust voltage, BUT: VID (Voltage IDentification, target stock voltage) is also selected with internal configuration of several pins. You can pinmod your CPU to higher voltage as well, to make a permanent overclock which will work on any motherboard, without the need for any BIOS configuration. I can post the pin mod for LGA771 if you want.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS NOT TESTED. IT IS ONLY A GUESSWORK.
This is only true for X5*** series CPUs, but same method can be used to find VID mods for other CPUs.

Best way to mod would be to check your CPU's VID (afaik CoreTemp sees it; if not, it should be on the box, where FPO code is),
then compare and find at least one 0 and one 1 that are common for your VID and your desired VID.
Then you would mask and connect the pins appropriately.
For example: you have 1.000V and you want to have 1.400V.
1.000V is:
1-1-0-0-0-1
1.400V is:
0-1-0-0-0-1
Only VID6 is different, so you just have to connect VID6 pin to ground or to another pin with ground. VID6 is easily conectable to pin AM4 (between 2 and 6) which is ground, as can be seen in the datasheet I posted. To set 0 connect pin to the ground. To set 1, mask the pin with electric tape.

I get the idea. We will trick the mobo into supplying some other desired voltage, instead of letting it do it automatically.
I suppose this is the same scheme used to mod a socket 775 chip? I realize that you have not tested this for 771, but it looks like a reasonable thing to do, at least for us on XS!! :ROTF:
One thing that I wonder about is grounding a pin that is trying to be held high by the chip. If I take a "1" and ground it to make a "0", do I run the risk of blowing the logic output of that pin since it is trying to drive the line high? I could see the reverse case of driving a "0" with tape should not hurt anything since it is disconneting the chip? ...Or perhaps the outputs of the chip are buffered to prevent hurting them. ....Just rambling on here. Please excuse me.:rolleyes:
I think I may take my crappiest quad and mess with it before actually doing this to a mainline machine. I would like to try it. The question will be when do I have the time??.....:shrug: :rofl: The other problem I will have is my "old farts" eyes. (I started in electronics when you could actually see the stuff. Discrete transistors were king and tubes were still commonly used...:eek:) I may have to get a higher power magnification headset, or perhaps ask my daughter to do it....
I'll have to see if it's needed on my next build, coming up this weekend.

How do you connect VID6 with pin AM4 ?
Some sort of special marker ?
I'd like to try this on my E5420's . I'm stuck at 3 Ghz now.
440x7.5 is my goal. 1.3v should be enough. (then I just need to tape VID5 , VID4 and VID1)

So I'm going to do the mod for 1.35V on my X5450's, as they already have 1,25V stock I only need to ground Vid4 :)
Stupid mobo, it undervolts to 1,21V bios and gives only 1,17V after Vdroop, so I need more juice to run 4Ghz+.

I was worried about grounding the pin too, but seeing that BSEL mods (and Shamino's VID pinmod) involving shorting the pins work without blowing the chip, I assumed it is safe.
Of course LGA775 chips can be modded all the same; you have to find correct pins and vid table in Intels datasheet.

If what is here is all true then connecting VID4 to AK5 will change all 1.25v CPU's to 1.35v.
AM4, AL3, and AK5 are all VSS. Pretty much anything else is labeled as "reserved" or "VCC_DIE_SENSE"
Yes, and I intend to do just that STEvil. BUT not until Asus releases a working bios for E0 CPUs.. I ain't touching the X5450's until then.
You just don't risk a 40k/d cruncher for the sake of an added 5k/d at the risk of losing all 40k for the time being.

What Mobo do you have?
I was all excited to try this until it occurred to me that my Asrock GS41C-GS tops out at 1333 (333 on the bus) so you could ask the CPU to run as fast as you want on that board and the most you are going to get is 1333,,,,,, :(
