Asus M3A78-T + 9950BE overclocking... wow its all new again

Well I've had a day to play witb my new setup and without access to XS.

Now I'm not used to the bios layout of the asus, as I'm used to dfi and biostar more so there are a few new things that I have no idea wtf they are for or do.



So far just using multi adjustments and vcore increases I can get into windows at 3ghz and almost get in at 3.4. Adjusting the fsb from 200 to 350 and setting the multi at 10x attempted to boot at 4.55ghz! WTF!

How does fsb work on phenom? Is it now based on the cpu multi?


What's the difference between processor nb vcore and nb vcore? Even under northbridge I can adjust cpu vcore... I'm lost totally.


So what do the resident experts have to say? Brother...I need ya ;)




I forgot to add this was all on stock hsf. So once I put 1.45v temps hit 60c+

I'm hooking up the watercoolin now so the only access I got is from my phone

cant find it ATM but it shows how all the clocks are related via cpu-z and such.

Its better to over clock with the MULTI than the FSB on the Phenom.
So if your getting them sort of OC's doing it the hard way then you may get 3.55ghz stable doing it the other way.

you are indeed very correct about that cooper, but many and i mean many, (as you know (including many top hardware review sites)) still refer to the bus as FSB, and for calculation of ht and so on, is less confusing for people who are not familiar with the new system layout.

if you have a real need to stop this, then i would suggest starting with the 'tech guys' who know all about HT's and so on, on the big review sites tomshardware, extremetech, and so on, who still use this term. :mad:

then we might not have people being confused about this, when they enter the forum. :D

there is a long way to go, and will get even more confusing when Intel start this change as well (eventualy)

we can only try :up:

I still have the Old school AMD habit of calling it FSB when its CPU Freqency Bus or HT.

That about the time I stopped using FSB also. That's why I was a bit shocked when I seen a setting in my bios labelled FSB. I figured I would use the term used in the bios just incase that's something common to asus mobos and since adjusting it didn't have the same effect adjusting HTT did on all my other mobos.


Anyways any tips on overclocking these things? Like safe maximum voltages for each thing?

Haha 4.55ghz was what was shown at the post screen. By no means was it actually running at that. If I tried I imagine I could get it to show 9ghz at the post screen.

Windows, I was almost able to get in at 3.4. But any number of things coulda been holding me back since it was on the stock hsf. Thanks for the heads up, ill pm him :)

@ Jimmer 86 the stock HS or lap it smoother and use MX2 or As5.. your results will be little cooler all the time// with colder LOAD temp. The stock HS is a little rough and will use more paste than if you had it lapped.Thus the rougher it is the more the CPU hold the heat and dosnt transfer it as good.

Every little bit helps with phenom ,, Especially when you choose to run the Stock cooler:shocked:

Look for a setting that canges CPU to SB/NBvolts .. helps stabilize the ram while running tigh timing at High freqency with a high NB.
Only a little extra is needed..

Example: Say stock is (1.20v then bump it to 1.25v/1.30v) This also helps when running 1 or 2gig sticks in all four slots. More Mem will usually need more Volts to stabilize the ram.

Also make shure you have the 0306Bios has many updates ..
Ill checking the manual out to see what settings are availiable for volts...will post in a few what i find.


1st ,, These two VOLTAGE settings

(Processor VOLTAGE) = CPUvid or Vcore
(Processor -NBvoltage) = NBvid on the CPU,,NBvcore

Which you can see below.. 9x50 Phenom x4's can run 1.55 for both if you have enuff cooling.. 1.31 will be ctock for CPU and 1.25 should be stock for NB.. I usually Raise the NB up to Match the CPUvid when i use High NB clocks and CPUclocks.

Example :
3.2ghz//2200mhz Nb stock volts only for my 9950.
3.3ghz CPU = 1.35/1.37v and with 2200mhz Nb= 1.35v

3.4ghz CPU = 1.40/1.48v and with 2500mhz NB = 1.40/1.45v

3.4ghz+ CPU = 1.55v and with 2600mhz+ NB = 1.55v ,,do not exceed 1.55v with the NB..

The NB will max @ 2700mhz no matter the volts..Has to do with HTlimits and Heat.

The CPU ive reached 3.55 with 1.62v but my Mobo cant handle it,, its only SB600 hahaaa.

2nd,,
Clocking the HTT and or go above 3.0ghz using the CPUxmultis you need to run the CHipset for NB @ 1,27-1,30v..

This is with in its spec range..This will be needed to keep the Ram stable while comunicating to the IMC on the CPUNB..Allows for tighter timing @ Overclocked and High Freqency settings.

3rd,,
Setting HT volts,, Allows for higher HTclocking..
You will have to enable(NorthBridge VOLTAGE) to(MANUAL from Auto) for the HTvoltage setting to appear.

Set it to 1.30v- 1.35v max.. Every mobo ive set did not need more than 1.35v max to go High HTT 280+/300+..

I've already got most of my loop setup in my ufo, it should be up and running tonight on water. Is phenom really that sensitive to heat?

I was able to see idle temps with in 1-3c of ambient and load temps no higher than 40c on my am2 rig. Ill post my phenom temps once I have it running later on this evening (after work).

For equipment I'd reccomend the stuff in my sig, tho replacing the block with an apoge gtz or fuzion v2, which I plan on doing.

Dual MCP655 is pushing for the average OC'er. I run double pumps too but I've got them both turned down to P3.1± to keep them silent (they're external). The main reason I went with dual pumps was the same reason I have 320 Gb of RAID1.

I'm looking forward to playing with this same set-up - 9950BE and the M3A78-T w/DDR2-1066 RAM (for the first time!). It's all here in the boxes but I'm kinda' busy at home this weekend - just enough time to stop in for a browse then back to the Honey-Do's ... ;)

True dual is overkill. At the moment Im only running 1 on the phenom system as Im going to use the other one in my wifes build down the line.

Im running my ram at DDR800, it will do DDR1066 but I dont like the idea of putting more than 2.1v to my ram as Ive already killed 3 sticks of Ballistix in the past at 2.2v and 2.3v.

Well Im sitting in windows at 3.4ghz right now after finally getting things all setup and I am working on stability as I type this.

Right now its mostly just a multi overclock. I did drop ramspeed from DDR800 to 667 and set it to 2T aswell as dropping HT link speed to 1800 for now, Im hoping both of those will increase as i tweak things.

@ Jimmer i am thinking of getting m3a78-t too...
I just rma'ed my crosshair II and thinking of taking instead the 790gx.
My 9950 only went to 3.2 and not stable on the crosshair II....
Will this do anything better or should i stick to a cheap board and w8 for something better?

For a dude coming from 3800+x2 you are managing the Phenom and taming it rather well :D.

Just think that at one time it cost $250+ just to get a 3.4ghz X2..

Thank you :) Im pretty sure that this chip can atleast boot at 3.5ghz+ once I get this whole thing figured out. I still have not touched HTT yet tho I suppose that I should start doing that soon.



Im still tweaking it and trying to get it stable, tho Im having alot of issues. Im starting to wonder if the problem is more Vista64 rather than settings since even at 1.55vcore, 1.45v cpu nb and ram set at DDR400 and 2T with 2.2v I still get crashes in orthos all the way down to 3ghz.



Im going to install XP again and see if things are better. One thing that I do not like about this board is that while Vcore goes upto 1.8v, cpu-nb voltage caps out at 1.45 in bios.




Update: Im now running the ram in unganged mode and things are much much more stable. So far its beed running orthos blend for about 45 mins at 3.2ghz without crash where before it didnt last longer than 3 mins. I think Ima stick with vista a bit longer and see how things go. Once I pass a couple hours of orthos or get impatient Ill work my way back upto 3.4ghz+ and then Ill try to push the nb some more.

Hi Anandtech did some testing with vista 32 bit and 64 bit with Phenom they did find the the vista-32 bit would over clock 1.5 ghz highter than the 64bit vista something you can try for your self if you want. But if you are running a all AMD cpu and video cards i stay with vista of some kind and not xp .

Hi err .15 highter so if you got 3.15 in vista-32 you got 3.0 in vista-64 it was working out to about .15 diff. sorry for the bad post ealyer.

Anyone else have experience with ganged and unganged and its (possible?) effect on ram stability? So far unganged is far and above more stable than ganged.

Hi i run ganged all the time my hightes posted front FBS was 245 with my DDR-2 800 A-DATA 5-5-5-18 2t ram was running about 980 . I use a 3.003 ghz. mulit x13 FBS 231 ram running at 924 from my 24/7 clock . My 9850 be not as good a chip as that 9950 you got . My max posted has been 3.2 ghz .

O that with the HT and HTlink running at full speed defalut v and the FBS running at 231 on the 24/7 clock .

Started messing with HTT speed trying to get 3.2ghz+ and so far so good at HTT246. Ive gotten in windows just fine at 250HTT as well. The thing is that when I try 260x11.5 it fails to boot and lists clock speed at 3.38ghz, its driving me nuts because it seems to randomly just decide to use its own multiplier.

Anyone else have issues with this so called random multiplier?


So far it seems that my 9950 favors multis below 16x. But Im still testing things. Im still able to get into windows at 3.4ghz with the 17x multi, tho not stable as it randomly crashes. 16.5x is stable for about 5 mins of dual orthos where 17x would crash as soon as I hit start on both. 16x was rock stable for a few hours before I decided to end it. Now Im working on HTT overclocking while keeping the NB clocks as high as possible :D

Hi I'm sure you know already, but about the random multiplier, you have got C'n'Q and C1E disabled hanv't you....also make sure that you have Vista/XP power settings to - Performance (Vista) - Home Desktop (XP) - to make sure that its not trying to use ACPI states....

Otherwise I'm not sure what could be causing the random multiplier, BIOS problem maybe.... theres a new BIOS available for this mobo I think its v.0304 at the ASUS website.

Ive also got a chart for which HTT speeds I need to attain 3.2ghz from each multi going from 10x to 16x just so I know which HTT to test to find my max. I plan on doing the same thing for 3.3ghz and possibly 3.4 so that I can find my max. Makes things a bit easier to have something to refrence without going to a calculator.

Once I get office installed Ill make a few excell sheets people can use for their own refrence.

When i use cpu-z 1.47 and look under mainboard, it says that my M3A78-T is with chipset AMD 780G ATI SB750, howcome its not 790GX and SB750. Why is that, and what about other boards.

2700nb seems to be the Max for 9x50's.. Ive tested several CPU's( 2500 to 2680 is optimal) Depending on cooling and Volts run on Mobo . This ive found with most of the CPU freqencies ive used while running Ganged and Unganged (Both6400/8500 ram)..

Sometimes the Bios is the biggest factor with this.. a good Bios = great Oc period.


Note:
Ive found that the HTT likes 230/250 max Most Ram freqencies ive tested . Even though I can push the HT to 5200 it is Usually = to the Max NB you run for your given Oc with out exceeding 5200 .


My conclusion,,
Stable HT above 5200 and NB above 2700 might not be possialbe until 45nm and DDR3 Mobos which is desinged for HT5200+. Then we can push that limit further i believe.
More so i believe the Mobos and Bioses ATm are responsible for the limits of 9x50's. I can push my CPU to 3.55 with 2000HT 2000NB but Mobo holds it back(:explode2: ,,Particulerly the PWMS cook with the Voltage it needs to Do it.:D

Your chart would be very valuble and save lots of time tweaking . Especially fo those people that have no unlocked multi going UP:up:

P.S. i think CPU-Z need more updates for GX/750

Mine shows the same things. Technically its still a 780G board, just with an updated southbridge which I imagine is why its called the 780GX rather than 880G.

Whats the max HTT your board will run? Also do you know what the SB Spread Spectrum does? There is a warning about not disabling it aswell as enabling it and another spread spectrum along with it. Ive ignored every other warning up till now since I started overclocking but Im not sure why I dont ignore this one lol.

I think that I found my max HTT. 250+ the board will not boot at 3.2ghz, but 249x13 http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc.php?id=415130.

Usually Spread spectrums are DISABLED for Overclocking and can affect the Power States/voltages used for CPU/satas/HDs when Enabled.. 750ATI chipsets may be different now to where it need to be Enabled for SB only..

Only Way to know is to try it out,, Wana be the Giunie piG:hehe:

Technically it's the same but the graphics clock is kicked up a notch or two and there is the added "Sideport" memory.


BTW - You tried turning down the NB and HT Link multipliers for 260x11.5 ...?

The 790GX NB is as QuietIce describes--it's got a more powerful GPU solution. I'd not call it it the same thing as the 780G unless you would call a GeForce 8400 and 8800 the same just with a couple tweaks on the same basic core. That's just a personal opinion on conventions though.

If you get higher clocks in unganged, by all means stay in that mode. While Honda's Everest results may seem to favor ganged, please remember that that is a synthetic benchmark. In my own testing, I found that unganged without exception outperformed ganged in all 22 configurations of my gaming/3DM tests.

The graphics core is really just a faster clocked 3200 though, so I'd say 780G +SB750 +Faster onboard is pretty accurate. Why re-spin something great and not just add to it?

Yes I did try turning down the NB multi but was still unable to boot at 260 HTT. Right now Im running dual orthos at 246x13 with SB Clock Spread Spectrum disabled. I attempted to run dual orthos while at work at 249 and it crashed tho Im not sure at what time it happend. Same goes for 246x13 overnight. Im hoping that stupid setting is the culprit because Ive been able to play COD4 and Stalker just fine at these settings.

What do you guys use for testing stability in Vista 32/64? Could there be a chance that orthos just isnt the way to go with vista?

If Orthos is crashing, you aren't stable even if you haven't yet experienced a system crash outside of Orthos. Same goes for Prime95. Personally, I like to use Prime95 25.6 beta (MT enabled).

Orthos should be able to just fine from what ive seen and read for Vista.

Phenoms are very sensitive to High HTT/fsb Above 240/250..( Volts on the HTchipset to 1.28-1.31v are safe to use
24/7 with stock NB/SB heatsinks)

Ive found that some memory dividers will work better than others because of freqencies the phenoms run at..

The Higher the HTT the lower the Highest Oc will be ..

@288 i can only run Max CPU @ 3340mhz no matter the Volts or NB/HTT/HT settings.

@ 260 i can run 3450mhz STABLE but not Stable @ 3.5ghz NB2680
@ 250 and lower i can run 3450+mhz with Max NB 2690

Depending on the memory divider and BIOS will determin how how it can go..Even using HIGHvolts i can NOT go above 3340 @ 288+ with high NBfreqencies

There are so many variables with HTFreqency . Seems CPUxmulti and RamXmulti are a main key for stability.

Using DDR2-8500 1066ram allows a better Oc in my opinion unless you have real good 6400 that can run 533+..

@ 266 i run my Ram @800 = 1066 5-5-5-15-2T

Some memory xmultis will work better than others with same htt/ht setting.. i can use 533 but not 400 . I can alsouse 800 and 1066 but not 667 dividers when i try any HTT/HT combination. Memory dividers will chage as the ram and HTT go higher some just work better at all speeds vs others..

But to go Higher with HTT only causes you to lower your Overall OC and stability by not keeping things closer to 2000HT and HTT

My Max (Not Prime or orthose stable)..More of a Suicide run:DThe Boards PWM's fail @this speed from heat. i can only do this run with HTT200

34.8ghz/Nb2680 .. that goes out the window once i try to raise HHT over 268..but if i keep it below 260 i can do 3.5ghz with a little less on the NB with better performance.

Overall CPU is Higher but with lower HTT on this run...Performance is better @3.5/nb2600 vs 3.84/nb2680

High HTT isnt all that and i can get the same performance using lower HTT = Stability @3.45ghz vs 3.5ghz HTT260 and be UNstable.

Very nice, but now I get to throw all instabilty testing Ive done out the window. Vista auto updates at 3am everyday so my overnight orthos may have been stable after all. I caught it today doing a countdown to restart. It had killed one process of orthos, the others was 11hr stable and running. grrrr

Basic tenet of OC'ing: Always turn off the automatics. :D

Anyone have any idea what the option CPU Tweak does? Defaults enabled...


Also I didnt notice and automatic overclock when putting my phenom into a SB750 board like AMD claimed. My 9950BE defaulted to 2.6ghz rather than 2.8ghz.

I think Tweak is the adjustment for the TLB bug on B2 chips.


IIRC the 9950 IS a 2.6 GHz chip. And I think MrMojoZ is right - I don't remember anyone saying anything about an "automatic overclock". Linky please ...? :)

hey gotVoltage, what is your vdimm? i noticed you got trc = 26 which seems really low, i have to have mine ~40 if i wanna keep vdimm low (when running ram @ or near 1066)

@2.2v to 1120mhz and @2.3v to 1175mhz.. ther revision 1.2 Dominators..one of the last with microns by Corsair:mad:.

CPU Tweak changes how the caches are managed
It increases individual core performance but there is minor lost in multi-threading

Cinebench10 is best way to see the difference

I enable CPU Tweak all the time now

Im looking for the link, but the way I understood it was that the Sb750 would increase any phenom by 200mhz by default, so a 2.6 would boot at 2.8. maybe I misinterpreted it

Ya - I've never seen anything like that anywhere. And if you find it I wouldn't trust the site it's from ever again.

But a lot of people were saying that 200 MHz is the average increase in OC for the 9850 and older chips using an SB750 board ... :)

It was first being said in some sort of way that with ACC and a SB750 you'd gain a 400Mhz boost with a Phenom BE (I think it was BE only?) and 200Mhz with a SB700.

However, I dont think this was automatically and actually recquired some input. Also Im unsure whether that SB700 statement was true after all since it does not feature the same fixes as the SB750 had.

Maybe it was a bit based on that with a SB750 a Phenom BE can simply OC 400Mhz at least and with a SB700 only 200Mhz, I dont know really. But first it was put in a complete different day light than before. However, after all SB750 does its job, but it's not automatically. Or maybe you got to leave everything on auto in the BIOS? Including MP's/HTT/V's and ACC? Is that resulting in a standard 400Mhz+?

I dunno, everything auto was 2.6ghz. But who uses auto these days?


I finally got burnt by vista :( Ive got some problem where it cant connect to the group policy holder service so anything I open fails just about. failed to load driver. Happens at 100% stock and overclocked.

Also anyone know how the oc profile tool working on this board?

Thats just a registry corruption issue.... just do a repair install with the Vista Install DVD, and this should fix the registry for you....

I did a clean install of vista again. For some reason my XP and my Asus drivers just wouldnt get along.

I hope they get along with Win2K ...

Pretty much every driver would do the quick command prompt window close fast when opened. Those were the updated drivers off the asus site.


Forgot to pull disk out of other dvd drive while I had it setup out of case and too lazy to find a paper clip...lool

Can any one help? I keep getting blue screen of death with this board Asus M3A78-T. My ram, harddrives and CPU worked with out any problems on the Asus M2n32-SLI Delux. I was getting blue screen of death evey hour until I turned off the onboard video & put my old video card back in. Memtest did not find any problems with my ram. I was still getting the odd BSOD until I uped my ram voltage from 1.9 volts to 2.0 volts. Is there any other votages I should set that should make this board a bit more stable? Many thanks for any help.

Check for Bios updates pertaining to the Onboard Graphics..

The Bluescreen i believe is Bios Driver Related for the Onboard Graphics...Biostar had simalar issue with GX/GX2/GX3.. But new Bios release fixed it.. Also ACC will be very buggy sometimes..Dont use it if you can Oc good with out it..

Im shure the ACC funtion will be better with Bios updates as well...
Ive been trouble shooting my friends set up and all his problems go away when he disables the onboard graphics and ACC. ASUS 78-T..Im also looking at the 79-T for myself:D

P.S. i still have my M2N32deluxe with 1903bios too..Great Mobo for X2's/X4's with the 1903..although HT/Nb is limited.

But I had the on board video and ACC turned off and was not using AOD, had the CPU running at stock & my system still crashed, I took out the montherboard on Sat and sent it back, put my old Asus M2N32-sli back in & I have not had one problem all weekend. I must of tried every driver and Bios that was out for the M3A78-T and just could not get it to work for any logger than a few hours.

Does any one know out of the gigabyte 790GX and the Biostart 790GX board which one would be the better buy?

I find my system is most stable with ACC set on auto. Also have you tried the 667 ram speed vs 800?
