After reading about youngpro I had an idea.

There are many thousands of you here at this forum who have recently read about our member Youngpro being diagnosed with Leukemia.
Nasty disease to get and to see this happen in one so young and full of promise is a sad thing.
As many of you know my passion in life is in doing medical research with the hope that the work we do today can help the next generation.
I also sit back and see 80,000+ members here but only a small fraction of those participate in the work we do.
I wondered why and thought on this quite a while.
Some think the work is useless as it doesn't give an instant response to the work done and I can understand that a little.
It's like building a house and we've just completed the foundation.
I also thought that many here aren't interested in or financially capable of having "electrical sucking, heat producing" machines running 24/7 in their homes.
I have an answer to that problem.
If you are capable of spending app $300.00( and have some common parts laying around) then read on.

A while back I happened onto a little system that intrigued me.
It was a dual socket server quality board that used what are essentially 2 Yonah laptop cpu's.
31w each and at 100% load run at 34C, draw 117w and can run quietly and generate essentially no heat.Even if a cpu fan failed it will run passive.
This is literally one of those systems you can sit on a shelf and forget it.
The problem at the time was cost. Server boards aren't cheap but times change.
I found a supplier for the boards at $29.00 shipped( Yes, $29.00) out in California. I've bought from them and straight to do business with.

The cpu's come in two flavors: 1667 and 2000mhz..

The special stepped heatsinks for these are available from OEMXS:

The good part is that they are 19 miles from my home and I can do a "pick up"
I just recently grabbed 8 of them.
Last is memory, the board uses DDR2-400 ECC REG and thats available from Newegg for $72.00 shipped for 2x1 gig.

Now you will need a EATX case,and a PSU with 24 and 8 pin board connectors.
When complete you have a machine with app 60-65% the computational power of a Q6600 at 3600mhz.
mhz for mhz it is actually dead equal to the Q6600, just has 1/2 the mhz.
It makes almost no heat, runs dead quiet,is server grade dependable and it's cheap to build.
I have built two of these, one I sold to a member and one I have running in my unairconditionaed office.
I stuck a 36 gig raptor I had sitting around in it for the OS and I doubt I'll have to touch it for months if at all.
I use this on the WCG(World Community Grid) that does aids and cancer research amongst others.
If you want to make a positive contribution then this is a way that is doable.

edit: Those few things being a badly needed car, and a needed DSLR.

But after that, I plan on getting some cheap, low power crunchers (the mini-ITX, Intel Atom powered ones look attractive)

The only difference is on the first one I used one of those blue plastic 120mm to 80mm adapters with the 120mm side down covering both heatsinks.
I didn't have the adapter on hand this time so I just screwed the 2-80's to the HS.. Same effect and actually same temps.
The one fan method is a little cheaper on the elec though in the long run..:D

Yes, agreed..and special to this board..has a step on the bottom to make it work right as these are a different height from the other duals.

I have mine in this, a Lian LI PC62..EATX version of the PC60
Nice quiet stated class I think.
Not that great for a high heat system as it is just 2-80's front and one 80 rear but perfect for Sammy..

A post-it taped to the machine saying:
DO NOT SHUT DOWN!
Medical research in progress"
Also stuck to the edge of the monitor will help.
If that doesn't then a electrical charge to the chair when the machine shuts down.
400-500v should do it!:)

Another option when the Sossamans run out is that Opties are going for as little as 50 a pair on Ebay. I'm getting DC Opties for my WA6 for 66 a pair, and the better ones aren't too much more expensive. A bit of searching and you can build a dually for close to that price.

Seeing as I'm benefiting from the research as well, I have no problem dedicating what it takes to the cause. There have been breakthroughs that can give me a new aorta, which would mean a natural lifespan, and a new drug that will keep me from coughing up my lungs-both of which mean I can live a full lifespan. That's not too bad, all told. Proof it works.

The only issue with the Opties is heat and electrical draw.
This runs so cool that it doesn't heat up your house, draws like one 100w lightbulb and is so simple there's not much to go wrong.
Like I said, even if a cpu fan dies it will run passive.
Add in that the board is server quality and that this system was orginally designed to be in a 1U rackmount in an unairconditioned envirionment and it is a total winner.

If you build a gpu crunching rig Dave, you will be cheaper and crunching faster... Most work done for science for the least money is the point of this thread? Then you can not dismiss Gpu folding imo.

There are some AMD based boards which can have 4 dual slot cards, and allot of board who can house 3. if you pair it with a cheap dual core and run vista, it can even feed four 280's ( or 3 9800gx's as the max supported gpu clients iirc atm is just 6 ).

That's allot of crunching power for allot less money needed to get it through the cpu in any project.

I think I only adjusted the 'more science part' not the 'cheap' part.

Currently I think you can get a 8600gt for 50 bucks or so, and it will go in any running system you have already. That 50 bucks pos gpu will outscore most current cpu's which cost's allot more. My 90 euro's 9600gt I think would outscore your permawood causing intel rig, maybe that's an even more striking point to make?

Yes, but GPU's take a lot of electrical power and make a lot of heat.
This system is for the person who isn't your "average" cruncher as we are and doesn't want a high electrical or high heat system
This is for the average Joe or Mary to build, set on a shelf and forget it.
For that use it can't be beat.

In that case, the high performance clients are out as they do require allot of attention :(

But, Angra measured his 9800gx2 at 43w per core I think, that's 86w in total for 9000ppd in Folding at home. Sorry I have to bring in points, but they should always reflect the science being done and we don't have any comparisons. Let's just say a higly clocked quad with dual smp is capable of 4500 max I think ( don't know, can't clock this high enough and thus run single smp for quick return times ) and that's about 3.6 or up. Kentsfield ( most would run with those still I assume ) will draw more at load.

Offcourse, compared to sossaman, it is still high, but considerbly less then I think most people assume. I though it would be the max wattage as defined by the manufacturer but the actual draw is allot less.

Edit: btw I should really change me saying my card would outscore your dually, as it actually wouldn't if you ran it tweaked. Though with just two smp's (instead of four clients) I would still feel capable of taking it on :)

The problem with those is heat and electrical use.
Here's something to think on in regards to older equipment;
In 2005 I built a state of the art dual xeon 3600/2mb/800 rig.
Cost me over $3500.00 to build.
The best of everything and where is it now? Sitting on the shelf behind me doing nothing.
Reasons are heat and electrical.
It draws over 300w at 100% load, pumps heat like a small furnace and in WCG produces app 6500-7000 points a day.
That sossaman rig draws app 117w at 100% load and does app 7700 a day.
There are other viable options besides the sossaman system.
A macmini is a good choice.
A Q9450 at stock speed doesn't toss a lot of heat and is reasonable to run electrically.
I chose the sossaman because as a total package it makes for the almost perfect cruncher for those who aren't interested in crunching.
It's a lasy system; cool, quiet and doesn't need much if any maintaince.
Build it, configure it, then stick it anywhere you have a net connection and walk away and forget it.

I would also like to thank you all for your comments and prayers - I worked with James and Thane and spent many evenings benching with James enjoying many humorous times at work creating scripts in the name of "fun". Thane and myself have been keeping each other as up to date as possible with news and support during these difficult times.

James is a very strong guy and his determination and will power will push him over this hurdle in life, he will be stronger for it and no doubt look back and smile with the confidence that he beat this disease - I am sure he will prove to be an example to us all. Our prayers and thoughts are with him every night - the road may well be rough and narrow but it won't be long before the way ahead is clear.

Funds raised for the foundation will go towards creating this drug. So i'm doing whatever the fk I can to help get James back.

It isn't a workstation.
Onboard vid and just a x8 PCI-E slot BUT you can mod that to take a X16 vid card or get a x1 vid card from the egg..I think Gigabyte makes one for app $100

4 cores, with a bunch of ram could make a decent server or rendering station as I see it. I'll see what cash I have available and cook something up :)

PCI-e 8x? I thought it was a PCIX133..

Dave do you have a picture of this 8 pin? Might try and create a simple adaptor for it instead of having to find an 8 pin powersupply, which maybe I dont know the proper type, can't seem to find.

also sossaman is around 15-20% slower per clock than conroe(as a whole I'm not entirely sure about DC projects), just letting you know. 1666*.8=1333. and then both have 4 cores, so really a 2.4Ghz kents would be around 80% faster and would probably draw about as much power after factoring undervolting

Weird but true and tested by me against my Q6600 at 3600 but you have a point in a way.
The difference's come in time. That board you'll get at fry's in a combo deal is probably cheaper than hell while this Intel board was orginally a $430.00 server board.. There is more than meets the eye here.

Two Mobo's on the way. Once I get them expect a nice buildlog where I create an open Acrylic T case ;)

Thanks again Movieman for the help, so now that's 2 mobo's, 2x512mb ram for the first mobo, 2 heatsinks, I have hd, power supply, and cd, so just need CPU's and some thermal paste it would seem. Probably put my X850XTPE in this, dunno, just maybe :P

Now if only two people on ebay would pay up.

Just a sidenote for those who have more to spend, but care very much about efficiency: The most efficient rig for WCG you can currently build is a dual Harpertown (Octacore) rig.
Initial cost is high, but with outputs ranging from 30000 to 40000 points a day at below 300W power drain, this is a force to be reckoned with. It's also about the fastest thing you can get if you're doing CPU-intensive simulations of any kind, raytracing or video editing.

Parts needed:

- 2x E5420 S771 Quadcore Xeons, approx. 600 USD
- Asus Z7S WS mobo (there are cheaper mobos, but this one's overclockable, standard ATX size and also draws very little power) - 500 USD
- at least 2x1GB DDR2-800 FBDimm memory, appox. 110 USD
- good quality EPS capable PSU (24pin + 8pin + 4pin connectors), should have high efficiency (for example Corsair HX520) - approx. 110 USD
- Case should be well ventilated, other than that you can use pretty much any case as long as you're using Intel stock coolers
- generic hdd and any GFX card, even PCI and you're set

So if you have appox. 1500 USD to spend this is the way to go.

sossaman is basically yonah so that surprises me since, at least consumer side, conroe is roughly 20% faster. I will take your word for it though as I've done no testing and most things you say are usually dead on.

I got the board installed. Still waiting for the CPU's. I still need to buy a PSU too.

Build quality on the case is pretty good. They did a decent job on cooling too. Two 92MM fans up front (one included) and a 120MM in the back.

Anyone know how the front panel works on this board? And would I be OK with a 4-pin to 8-pin converter for the 8-pin plug?

4 to 8pin adapter should work fine (or even using only the 4pin, but maybe the board doesn't start up then, I dunno, ask Dave) :D

I have the adapter and the PSU, both are installed now along with a 40GB IDE hard drive. Just waiting for the CPU's now.

i think ill try and get the stuff for a setup a bit after christmas, but i need a computer i can play games on first(only ever had hp's and whatnot) but, they'll both run wcg :D

i think i may very well order two of them, i might have to wait a bit after my birthday in order to get the 4 cpu's though(bit short on cash)

Hey guys, first post, been lurking the news forum forever though =P. Anyways, I've got one of these rigs set up, however I think I'm running into some temperature issues. I've got the heatsinks from OEMXS that have been recommended and I'm getting idle temperatures of upwards of 60C...I tried remounting the sinks with Arctic Silver 5, no luck there either. Are these Sossaman's supposed to run this hot on idle? I thought they'd run really cool since they're LV, but maybe I'm mistaken...or maybe I'm doing something wrong. Anyone have any ideas?

Without fans I saw 69C at 100% load during a test.
temps all in the 30's with 80mm fans at 100% load.

my mobo just came, will the stock backplate work with the heatsinks? mine should be up next weekend after if i get enough cash

OEMXS is 19 miles from my house. I am going there later this week to pick up these heatsinks and yes, I agree, $25.00 is nuts.

If still bowing, shim the backside of the bracket to move it "out" a little.

Nope, no fans. At 100% load I was up in the 80's and around 90C without fans >_<. Are there fans I can get that are meant for the heatsinks or are any fans going to require some sort of custom mounting? I'm not much of a modder myself...

I'm wondering if your mounts are good as I only saw 69C in a 72F room using the 1667's at 100% load.
With 2000's with a standard 80mm fan at 100% load I see in the mid to high 30C range.
Mounting the fans is easy. just get 8 screw from the hardware store with heads bigger than the mount holes in the fan, coarse thread and shorter than the thickness of the fins on the HS from top to base and screw the fans slowly between the fins.
Works fine.

What software are you using to do this research? Folding @ Home or something more specifically targeted at cancer research that is GPU enabled?

The program is called World Community Grid.

And I finally ordered that heatsink mounting plate, gonna be here Friday.

I've been all over their site without finding any sort of client software. This is proving to be a major turn off. =|

We do WCG..World community Grid.. cpu only, no GPU app and this works thru boinc.
In the WCG section here at the forum there are stickies on setup and links..
