Danger Den GTX 280 WB

Hey Darth Beavis, you around???

I ordered 2 of these DD 280 blocks and just saw they come with Zalman ramsinks and now I'm concerned... I run an add on card right above my top video card and there is no way I can put zalman heatsinks there. One of the reasons this block was so attractive was that it is a single slot soloution, but with big ramsinks on the back, this is no longer the case.

I am sure that I'm not going to be the only one running into trouble with this and a simple backplate type soloution would be attractive to us

Is there any way that you can talk to your people over there at DD to produce a different soloution for cooling the back ram? Like an aluminum retention plate for the back of the card?

Just another rant, I like using full card waterblocks, but
I hate having the PCB exposed on the other side, it would be
sweet if they made them with some back coverage, especially if they
have some ram to cool. Like the Koolance did with the 2900xt, they had a
nice copper/gold heatsink that goes on the back, it is so sweet looking
when combined with the waterblock....

dengyong, while we wish they can sell it separately, they are proprietary design so only EVGA will sell them. If you want it, you are forced to buy their block but it's a very nice looking block.

Wait for EK since I think they will also make a watercooled backplate.

To late, EVGA GTX 280 HC on the way. :up:

I don't want a watercooled backplate either... I just want something simple and low profile so as not to interfere with the rest of my components.

The evga block is a perfect example - low profile aluminum retention plate that also cools the rams on the back of the card. Simple and doesnt take up anymore space than neccisary!

C'mon DD - can we get some help on this? Really $150 on a WB should get me better than zalman ramsinks :p

What is "Tieton" and how do I remove that name from the water block? :p:

last I checked, acrylic doesn't do a very good job at heat dissapation... sure would look badass though

I'm pondering if it would be a good idea to create a custom backplate from copper or aluminium (just cut fins from the surface and drill 4 holes) and colored to your needs. I would definitely kill for a copper backplate ;)

I honestly don't understand why anyone would buy a full cover block for the GTX 200 series cards. From my view, the whole point of buying a full cover block is to cool the GPU and the ram. If you're forced to use the passive heatsink(s) anyways, why not save yourself $100 and buy a universal block. I dunno, maybe the EK block will have a better solution for cooling the ram on the backside of these cards than the evga/DD blocks.

While I did not specifically ask . . .I notice someone did and DD replied they are making a backplate they just do not have it out yet . . .They have alot of stuff in progress and some things ready but not on their site like 780i blocks, SKulltrail SB blocks, etc. I will ask about an ETA for you guys tho.

its gonna cost alittle more, but Id go for that over the DD one.
I am not spending $150+ dollars to get ramsinks glued on half the card.

I will wait and see what comes out first, EK, or EVGA.

I just dont want ramsinks on videocards, cause I am not a fan of permanantly modifying something, as that makes it way harder to sell later on.

Can't you use the stock cooler backplate? Screw it on with the waterblock screws.

I admit the backplate will be a nice feature . . .but at least Danger Den had a card AT LAUNCH . . .EVGA and EK did not . . .so funny people will take an opportunity to flame DD . . .someone made a comment about why they had a smoked cover and said perhaps it was to block the new of the internals . . .guess that person needs glasses . . .as you can see from the pics in this thread. Even EK Eddy commented about how disappointed he was in DD blocks yet he would not say why . . .yet DD refuses to say ANYTHING bad about his products or any other vendor for that matter (not just on forums but in personal conversations). Heck ,I saw them helping a guy out with a mod when he was upfront about using Koolance projects for that paticular project (Koolance is sponsoring him this round). Then you guys wonder why they do not venture off their company forums to come over here?

BFG chose Danger Den, EVGA apparently went on their own (and seem to have good solutions) . . .so why hasn't an AIC vendor gone with EK? There is the same fanboism that people have with Thermochill over Black Ice when test results have shown TC is not really superior in meaninful ways . . .and they are so much smaller and have almost NO marketshare . . .and probably will not be around much longer. . . I hope EK can elevate themselves to a better market position . . .they do have good stuff . . .and we can have to really dominant players . . .

DD should at least bring out a completed product. No quick fixes with that blue Zalman heatsinks, even though those aluminum heatsinks do work quite well. Its not just about working well. Good looks sell, and you should know that yourself.

I'll be the first to bash Swiftech, my usual suported company. Apparently, Swiftech prefers to dwell in the n00b-ization of the liquid cooling market. I don't blame them because the market of TT and Koolance users is humongous, and Swiftech's laughing their way to the bank without having released a single high end product in over a year.

DD does put out compelling products. It could use a better cpu block than a simple re-hash of its aged TDX, but otherwise, its product line is excellent, albeit sometimes a bit expensive, but that's alright.

If DD wants to play in the high end space, then it shouldn't be immune from criticism, whether warranted or not.

I've got opinions to bash every single company. When you vie for my dollars, you better believe that I will be highly critical.

Eddy probably realized he made a misstep (which is the FIRST time I have seen him do so which leads me to think it was a fluke). I TOTALLY support holding Danger Den's feet to the fire . . .hell, I kept begging them to go back to the older style acrylic top instead of delrin for their gpu blocks . . .

You have to check often, because they sell out fast.

Something about Danger Den will ALWAYS have me coming back from more. I am sure I have spent over $3000 on them in the last six years, and will spend more in years to come. I always saw them as the pioneers, when everyone else was making mass produced crap (TT and koolance) They made sure to cater to enthusiasts. They spend a lot of time watching the forums, listening to what people want, and building it! Their prices are not bad at all, for years they have taken custom orders and for very very good prices have not problem at all making you a case from scratch that is perfect for you.

What really have they done? Their CPU blocks are pretty much the same design as 5 years ago and their GPU solution is nothing revolutionary. Step back prior and their block was a lot like the Spir@l and TC-4. :rolleyes:

IMHO the only smart thing they have done is lock in $$ for all Thermochill and Bitspower sales in the US.

sorry darth, i've done 1 W/Cing build my entire life and i've been reading these forums silently for the past some 3 to 4 years... i must disagree... DD doesn't cater to enthusiasts at all... DD like many only companies now caters to mainstream... it's like DFI and asus... EK=DFI and asus=DD... they have begun there conversion to a business... I, like many others here, love having EK-eddy to talk to on the forums and be one of us... EK knew what a W/Cer needed in a reservoir and built it, his one of his... DD has become corporate... and also i even roasted EVGA blocks alittle and they still responded to my post... DD may have good quality and CS but like asus, they just dont understand us anymore... BTW i choose the GTX over thermochill anyday :yepp: i also agree DD has been a BIG BIG pioneer in W/Cing i remember reading about them in a PC magazine and got so excited at W/Cing then which led to tomshardware, which led me to these forums...

bottom line, companies need to understand us and DD doesn't anymore, if they did they would post more reviews ,have CS on external forums, start innovating on what we want, and not whats easy to make and largest margins... one example... if they were on the forums would have been martins copper T-line or copper 90-degree fitting... that was a big hit and if they were on the forums they could have gotten it... hell even aqua-computers is on the forums... lol

last example... look at how successful petrastechshop is... because he was and is one of us... he knows what we want and need... hopefully he'll stay one of us :up:

DD actually pioneered Full Cover Blocks which all of XS goes oogle gaga over.
So whats this thing about nothing good comes out from DD?
Also my MPC Universal Chipset block would give any EK chipset block a good run for its money in restriction and performance.

Oh wait EK came after DD, in there FC blocks. SO if you wanna continue this, then EK and every other company RIPPED off DD.
In fact i cant think of a Company came b4 DD in full cover blocks.

I dont like there TDX's cuz they suck on a performance scale with others, but as for GPU's blocks, i think it will perform quite well.

Seriously, DD products fill a service niche as do Eddy's. I don't belief either produces shoddy work. This thread started with a request for a backplate and turned into a DD flamefest! WTF guys?

Darthbeavis, I'm grateful for your presence here and your willingness to give DD a semi "presence" here on XS. They were where I ordered my first ever WC kit and those were the forums I started on. Since everything I know about wcing and most of what I know about pc building and ocing comes from these forums, I guess I could say I have DD to thank for where I'm at today...

Anyway, in terms of these blocks, EK or DD = fine for me. I have components from both companies in my rig ATM and both are top notch. I went with DD for these cards cause they were out NOW! Sometimes NOW is what's most important (I'm sure everyone here can relate)

Anyways, settle down guys. Create a more positive environment here and we might actually get to talk with Jeremy over here instead of having to relay messages through DB

I love how the focus has turned from discussing a product to defending a company. This is XS, not [H] or Anandtech or any of those other forums. The only thing that matters here is performance. Simply put, this new block from Danger Den isn't going to perform with cheap ramsinks like the ones provided. I have nothing against Danger Den, bought my last FC block from them. I just don't like what they did with this block. Its just that simple.

i just recently bought my first DD product, The DD MPC universal chipset block for my DFI x38.
I gotta say the block is awesome looks good and cools very well. The craftsmenship seems top notch also.

@DarthBeavis hey does DD have a walk-in store i could go to? i don't live very far away from them, and it would really save on time and shipping.

On topic: anyways i like the black/smoked acrylic on the block looks damn nice. Sadly i wont be getting a GTX this time around or i'd prolly pick one of them up. Good Job DD :up:

o well DD throws lan parties with there employees and gamers that makes them sooooo connected to our community right? or omg they know what martin is doing... your logic doesn't make sense just because they know doesn't make them a better company... if anything it makes them a worse company for ignoring the voice of their customers... they need to integrate the customers feedback... for example maybe some better performance numbers? or better idea how about they make a BETTER aluminum res better than XSPCs... just throwing some ideas... maybe more powerful pumps like iwaki but can connect to PSU... im a lurker... i agree and im speaking form the customer side... but im at least being somewhat objective about it using real examples not just attacking you... i love it when someones argument goes bad and they respond with answers like "why do you like to argue" or "are you retarded"

i'd like to point out another example, look at the TC rads... they are pretty popular among our market segment correct? good temps, quite, durable, etc. well if you notice many companies, PCCs, PTS, etc. have started catering to TC rads even though GTX has much better supply... thats the invisible hand of the market at work... DD has another invisible hand... the mainstream market... it's a business choice... i respect that...

DD is a fairly decent company... better then the money hungry Nvidia or other computer companies out there but they just aren't correct for the market segment we are in, i wish them the best and i hope they keep driving the W/Cing market to mainstream... better them then TT or coolermaster or Coolit...

last thing... im not flaming on any company... i considered DD many times for many different parts... they somewhat made some wrong decisions on this product according to me and UObean... and well i take it a step further and say they made some other mistakes and therefore would not be a good company for my future builds, not off topic at all...

I am so glad you brought up the TC issue . . .as you have no idea what is even going on with TC. Thermochill rads did not sell for crap. Period. Did people want them? Sure. Why did they not sell many? Because TC did not produce many . . .Danger Den did not hoard them then distributed them . . .I have been at Danger Den many times and always notice their TC shelf either empty or almost empty. Now if you look at the sales volumes (ask PPC, FrozenCPU, etc to verify this as well) you will surely find Black Ice dominates this market. Now go look at Martin's tests and you will see this is justified by performance, price, and availability. I will fully admit the PERCEPTION is TC rads are better (I bought into that myself for quite a while) just as the PERCEPTION here is that DD is a corporate sellout who used to cater to the enthusiast and now they are catering to the Hana Montana crowd . . My point is that you clearly do not know what they think or what their intentions are . . .they are at tons of LANS trying to get to know their customers first hand . . .they are trying to push water-cooling out to more people such as being the first decent hardware available at a brick and mortar store like Frys. They also have pushed into complimentary segments like cases so we, as consumers, have some better choices that boring ass metal towers.

Their biggest fault seems to be the lack of communicate on external forums because this allows all this misinformation to occur and really it seems almost every person who has problems with them really is upset at the feeling they are not being listened to and have no contact with DD (hence the 'corporate' or 'sell out' tag).

I am not at all saying Danger Den could not do some cool stuff like refreshing their lineup if that is what you all want.


I brought up Martin because they provide him with whatever he asks for to test out without putting any strings on him just so our community can have access to unbiased test results regardless of whose products come out. I think instead of you bashing DD in that regard you should thank them. Martin sure does.

The funny thing is the guys from Danger Den would come here to other forums in a heatbeat . . .if this constant flaming and attacking did not take place. I am not saying you in particular are flaming but if you read through threads you will see what I am talking about (like saying they have not done anything since stealing someone's waterblock design).

I don't know much about water blocks. I just know how to deploy them. DD has the expertise, and I leave it up to them to come out with the most innovative and kick ass product. What do I want? I want them to take the performance crown convincingly. I want them to rip D-Tek and EK new ones, and smack the rest of the industry at the back of the head.

Just release the best performing water blocks, bar none, and they are guaranteed to have my business. Once upon a time, they did have the best water block...

They also have pushed into complimentary segments like cases so we, as consumers, have some better choices that boring ass metal towers.

Their biggest fault seems to be the lack of communicate on external forums because this allows all this misinformation to occur and really it seems almost every person who has problems with them really is upset at the feeling they are not being listened to and have no contact with DD (hence the 'corporate' or 'sell out' tag).

I am not at all saying Danger Den could not do some cool stuff like refreshing their lineup if that is what you all want.


I brought up Martin because they provide him with whatever he asks for to test out without putting any strings on him just so our community can have access to unbiased test results regardless of whose products come out. I think instead of you bashing DD in that regard you should thank them. Martin sure does.

The funny thing is the guys from Danger Den would come here to other forums in a heatbeat . . .if this constant flaming and attacking did not take place. I am not saying you in particular are flaming but if you read through threads you will see what I am talking about (like saying they have not done anything since stealing someone's waterblock design).

ok, so heres my question... if DD caters to our market, provides martin with test samples etc... why aren't they designing products that beat EK(such as no back plate on GTX280 block or temps) and CPU blocks such as D-tek fusion??? I mean UObean was right, forget the company forget the market, wheres the preformance? i dont get how a big company like DD with the money, labor, and resources cannot beat a small company like EK? or a new comer like D-tek? i would jump all over DD if they had the most quantities AND best products... but instead i have to wait an extra 4 weeks or so for EK blocks which im willing to do... thats what i mean by unconnected... almost same prices but not same performance why?

One thing to look at though is, what does a 1-2C difference get you? What does even 5C get you? It's really almost nothing if anything. Thus are there prices and quality not good enough to satisfy

Test results showing more than and 1 or 2 c delta would be good to take to Danger Den as a justification for a new design. The only results I remember seeing are flow tests done by Martin that show the MC-TDX was top (or close). Bring the evidence and I will present it to them (tho they will read it without my being involved I will just let you know they listened).

I have argued the same thing but most of the guys here probably have never cooled a rig with a phase unit to realize how futile a few degrees are in cooling . . .busting your butt to drop your temps a few degrees is silly when you can drop them 40 degrees at a minimum for not much more hassle . . .

I had a phase of yester-year. I disliked it because it was a true hassle In any event, my sole differentiating factor among the different brands is their ability to wick away heat.

I totally agree and I love Eddy for that. He can do that because he does not have obligations like a major vendor to supply blocks to. The beauty is we can have two kick arse companies so if you do not get what you want from one you can go to another. Heck we have more than just two. I have a MIPS ram freezer on my Skulltrail build. I have used EK mofset blocks with matching NB and SB blocks on Asus builds. To everyone who is :banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:ing but not offering ideas, there's a fine line between constructive criticism and biting the hand that feeds the industry, if not you. Some commercialization is good. AnFi-Tech blocks are bloody gorgeous. You'd love it if they got a bit bigger so they could fill all your orders, right? Hey, what if Cathar has a production line? See where this is going?

DD has actually been trying to give the community what it wants. There are things I want them to offer (either more silver blocks or silver plating, for anti-algae) and I'd love to see a new block design too, but how many here actually sit and try to design these things? It's not easy. Nothing is perfect, and nobody can be everything to everyone.

DD has been here for forever-my first block was a Maze2. For a lot of you, that's well before your time, though I know there are some diehards that were back there when we didn't know better than to use well water and stuff... These guys have been there all along trying to make sure we had what we needed, and they've moved along with the industry as best they could.

They're trying. Give them some credit for that. If you have a problem, state your problem and offer a solution. If you want more community involvement, be more welcoming. This place is not welcoming. Hell, you try and run off the regulars every other week.

I honestly don't buy the excuse that DD reps stay away from this site because of flaming. Its a two way street. If you're not going to come here and participate in the community, then you don't have a right to complain about your treatment in said community. Its not like EK blocks drastically outperform DD blocks. DD make a great product, they just don't have the customer service that their competition does. (Despite what some may think, participating in this forum actually does constitute as customer service.) That being said, I could care less if they hang out in these forums. I just want the best performance I can get. Its the same reason people buy thermochill. I'm not sure what testing you're referring to Beavis, but the PA series has always had the best performance with low speed fans. Hell Martin's latest testing proves this against a BlackIce radiator that has more surface area and an additonal fan for crying out loud.

edit: Also, if DD is going to provide a backplate later on, they should really list that on their website. I see nothing mentioned on the product page.

I am sure they would love to spend more time on R & D for new blocks . . .so where is the justification? The only test results we have from Martin show their MC-TDX has the best flow . . .we need data to tell them it is time to make a new design . . .we need some temp tests to to complete Martin's tests.

EK and EVGA both have some nice GPU blocks . . .and they can thank DD for the full-coverage market. EVGA only started offering blocks as a result of BFG beating them to the punch, and then they used ALUMINUM Innovatek blocks under the Black Pearl name . . .and I raised hell on their forums . . .and now they make their own copper blocks . . .Koolance blocks are really sweet as well now . . .they used to use aluminum, then you guys constantly had a cow . . .and I managed to get the word to them through Team Next Gen (who helps them with design ideas) to turn the tide. . .

All that feedback I have channeled was a result of . . . .you guys. The only difference is you guys (many of you) post your frustrations . . .I find a way to get the companies to listen to it . . .first filtering out the mindless flaming and bashing . . .if you eliminated the bashing then the companies would pick up on your good ideas themselves . . .instead you drive them off as once they read people saying they plain suck they will go elsewhere.

They sit down with the gamers, visit, and don't care if you buy something. At a Lan about a year ago, I had a leak spring up in the middle of the LAN. Dan from Danger Den came to my seat, and helped me fix it, and even gave me a free bottle of coolant to replace the coolant that had leaked out.

If thats not customer service, I don't know what is.

Jeremy from DD has just responded that they are now working on a backplate for the ram on the back of this card and it will be included in all future block sales, and provided at no additional fee for previous orders.

sounds like pretty good customer service to me... we asked, we recieved :D

To put things in perspective, D-Tek make great blocks but did anyone see a D-Tek representative here ? Flaming DD for not listening to customers is just childish ;)

Hey, you have made a really good point! Their product page does need more TLC . . .one area they can definitely improve is keeping their web store updated and fresh.

As far as TC performance . . .like you said, low speed and volt-modded fans . . .I am sorry but if you look at that benefit verses actually being able to buy the radiator and the price/performance I say Black Ice edges out TC . . .that I just a personal opinion . . .it may be all academic if Thermochill does not change the way they do business or stay afloat. You guys may know watercooling better than I but I understand business somewhat (my wife and I run a multi-million dollar business, I have a BS in business and currently am working on my MBA) . . .being constantly in a position of operating at way over capacity and not being able to meet your market demand in a reasonable time frame is a recipe for failure. Feser is poised to step in and take up the slack (the prices will level out folks) somewhat . . .now the question is will most folks really want a TC or just the hardcore people here . . .

Their customer service has been excellent when I've dealt with them. They were actually at a lan party I went to. Hence, the first time I setup my water cooling loop, I bought all my stuff from them and have since made subsequent orders. They're a great company. To be honest, I have never bought any of EK's equipment, but I'm sure his customer service is quite good as well. If it wasn't, I'm sure members here would say something about it.

Regardless, people are still missing the point. If one company interacts with a community and another doesn't, all things being equal, who would you choose? Likewise, they'll probably treat that company better in said community. Telling your customers (or through a representative) that you don't want to interactive with them on their level because they're immature flamers is not really a good business decision IMO. Ultimately, like I said earlier, I could personally care less. They will get my money if they have the best product. (Or even if it performs the same since they operate in my state and shipping is fast.)

Ok I just going to put my 2 cents in doesnt matter cause hey iam a rookie at wc...

First off I have built 3 wc rigs first 1 using all DD cause thats what I was reading about, then wanted to try something new took off DD product put it on something else, and ordered all ek + vregs same system the DD was on and there was only 1 or 2 c difference between the EK and DD...

I dont post in forms to often cause iam the type of person that I want to find out myself the difference between product lines or a Company. For example I am the one Darthbeavis was talking about on the first page about running Koolance (sponsored this time) and DD is still helping me with things.. Not only that they have not asked me why I am running Koolance product vs DD stuff no questions, I asked and more then welling to give a person a hand, great customer service. I even sent the same question to EK and got no response but got a response from DD the same day months later still havent received a replay from EK no big deal, maybe got lost in the mix, and no it wont stop me from buying something from EK.

Its human nature to flame other company's product its been going on for years ford/chev, toyota/honda its one persons perspective... Let everybody live and learn.. Its just everybody wants to jump on a bandwagon and ride it for what its worth..

Again just my 2 cents doesnt matter iam a rookie (and iam stocking up on TC rads hehehe)

+1 and IMO, people also want good looks, as well as performance.
Even if the part will be out of sight, a nice looking part makes you feel better about your purchase.

I have to admit, one of the reasons I don't post in this section much is because of all the flaming. I've been reduced to visiting just to see what new products/testing have been released.

People have preferences and we need more people like Martin to do thermal testing and gather other empirical data. Then we can stop bashing companies because of ignorance. Chipset block? Id settlefor just a freekin Silver plug cap, or a Brass one with a Silver core facing the water. Just use it to plug a hole in the res and it will work for every loop you ever make :P

OK So I am trying to install the DD backplates now but it seems I am missing 3 screws for each backplate? Has anyone put these on yet and did it come with the screws for you? I have the seven screws that go through the backplate and screw into the actual waterblock but then there are 3 more holes in between the barbs that I have no screws for? I checked to see if one of the seven screws they shipped with the unit would work and they do not thread in? So looks like I am bringing my waterblock to the local hardware store(Trial and error time).

I would like to take this time to thank DB for his efforts in working as a s#%t filter on our behalf. I would like to see better pics of DD blocks the one on their web site shows it on a card but no view of the actual working side of the block this is what I want to see and they still have not posted a pic of their backside plate, EK has a w/c back plate for this card the evga one uses a heat pipe, you can buy the evga block on new egg price 159.99 after mail in rebate, I myself will get the evga gtx260 core216 hc16 as an early Christmas gift for my self 494.99 usd. @the egg not bad if you figure in the price of the SC card (309.99) and the w/c block.
One question does anyone have a n.b. water block that will work on an Asus P5N-D (750i chip)??

I do have a DD GTX280 block with the copper backplate on a BFG GTX280 OC. Got the card a few weeks after it's release. Fit perfectly, been running it for a few months now. The backside is milled nicely, all screw holes were good and the backplate snugged down just fine. My temps at ambient 28C idle were 39C GPU and PCB temp 33C. Load comes in at 45C using Furmark at 1680x1050 (22" monitor).

Temps are good, I'm sure the other FC block makers come close to the same temps.

This block worked for me just fine.

Ohh, I haven't OC the card yet, just no need to now.

Edit, ran Furmark again temps got to 51C, still awesome.
