I was able to get a copy of Windows 7 Milestone One early this morning. Here are Some screenshots. It's not fully working since It is Not active because Milestone 2 coming out later this month, Early next month. When I find a way to make it work correctly. I would be able to answer all the questions I CAN, But Remember I'm not a Microsoft Employee.
How big is the footprint, and how much memory did you assign to it.
Did they reduce the number of background processes, and have they gotten rid of UAC :mad:

Well, If You look at the hard drive room it is currently using(16gb HD,Around 8GB Free). It's not very big at all. Compared to Windows Vista, It's Smaller.Quote:

I just dropped a DXDiag Picture in the link. Well. The Windows Folder itself is 4.25gb. The DVD was 2.9GB.
Hopefully the 64bit Version isn't like the Windows Vista 64bit in size atleast. Since Vista 64 was 10-11gb from a fresh install.
it looks the same of Vista, but if really the it using 337mb of virtual memory probably the final system could use less memory than Vista. It's very good if it's real!!

Very nice Warboy. What I don't like is that there is also a 32-bit version, alas still no future for 64-bit computing! But other than that I like that it is Vista on SlimFast. Very sleek, and yes the dusty loading screen had to go so nice 1 there Microsoft!
Does Windows 7 recognise and fully map 4GB's of RAM?
Is it DX10 only?
When you can get it non-virtual, we would like to see performance impact on games since I wasn't pleased with that in Vista.
Windows 7 looks like Vista SR2...

If I can get my hands on Milestone 2 when it hits, I'll let you guys know. Till then, I'm going to start working on M1 tonight and tomorrow. From What I know, DX11 Should be getting Previewed this Fall. If this is true, It should still make it into Windows 7. When W7 Goes Beta hopefully. I wonder....There is a modded UXtheme for it already too. If You look at WithinWindows.

Footprint should be smaller, their aim with Windows 7 is to make the install modular, much like Linux. Their currently testing how that works with Windows Server 2008. You can choose to install just the core OS.Quote:

UAC emulates that. The only thing its missing is a "Always perform this action" checkbox, so it wont bug you again for that specific program, letting you create a sort of accepted list.
And of course a list you can view and edit that shows all the allowed programs in case you change your mind.
And if you Really don't like it for some odd reason (The equivalent of using Linux as the Root account, something any Linux user would laugh you out of the room for) it can easily be disabled.

you can see on my taskmgr that the whole os is taking 133mb.
the 2008 server is almost linuxish and fast. but when u add gui and all of the other stuff u get vista......... !

I have heard conflicting rumors about the so called "MinWin" kernel. First it was in. Then it was out. Now it seems to be unconfirmed out. As in most people think it's out but aren't quite as sure of it as they used to be. OTOH, your version doesn't sound very "min" to me. I would still be using Windows 2000 if Asus would continue to offer motherboard drivers for it. I will stick with XP until a killer DX10 only game is released. XP SP3 is bloated enough as it is (although SP0 was sleeker than 2000), but Vista is just crazy with bloat.
Someone already posted about your Question I do believe. And No, I don't think it's using MinWin. The What MinWin is, Stripped down Vista Kernel that could run the minimalist things.

then you'd know that backing the bios clock to Dec '07 then using the activation crack will give you 6 months of play time with it...

Win7 from start cached every single MB I have [3GB ATM], I hope it will distribute memory much better than Vista, because on Vista with prefetching it was really bad for me, Win2008 with prefetching disabled by default was OK :).
all i want to know is how it manages the ram, because i tried running vista 64 on 2 gigs and it ran horrible, it used 100% of the ram and was using a swap file on the hdd, i dont think ive ever had such poor performance like that since windows ME
is the 64 bit version of this going to be like the 64 bit version of xp and not support most games?

Yeah, i'd like to see that too. One of my current beef's with Vista is how it takes like 1-2 minutes to thumbnail my movie folder (about 2-300 GB of ripped DVD's). Takes about 5 seconds in XP.Quote:

Vista doesn't just thumbnail the video or photo, it reads the header of each file, in the case of video it uses which ever directshow codecs you have with highest priority to extract the video/audio information from each file. It retrieves resolution, video codec, bitrate, video/audio track lengths, etc...It's much more intense than XP, as why it takes so long. Don't delete your thumbnails with disk cleanup and it'll only do it every so often instead of every time!Quote:
