WC in an Antec P182

Hello,

First of my apologies for me terrible English :)
Second; I hope I have posted this in the correct part of the forum.

My little story:
I want to switch to watercooling.
I have read a lot, but still there are some thinks I’m not completely sure of.
For starters let’s get clear about what I want:

Demands
Everything internal
Silence
Cooling (enough for a C2D or C2Q @ 4Ghz)

I currently own 5 Scythe S-Flex F fans with the Sunbeam Rheobus fancontroller.
I would like to have the fans @ 7V = 900rpm because i find them near silent at that speed.

I have been / still are doubting about what to take. A 240 or a 360 rad. A 360 rad is not so much more expensive as a 240 and it’s more ‘future-proof’ (if something like that would exist with computers).
The demand is that it can not be thicker then 30mm (tops 35mm) because it would hang over my motherboard.

The P182 is a bugger to put internal WC in..

best one i saw was drop the lower HD cage, you can get 4 single 120s one on the back, 1 in the middle then 2 where the lower hd cage was, you might be able to drop a 5th over the top spot but depends on mobo setup.

you could also drop one in the center spot instead of the lower hd rack, but this requires a pretty hefty pump to circulate it through all the rads and blocks

or if u put casters on the botom, and cut out a rad template on the bottom while getting rid of the HD cage you could have a 220, 120.2 in there plus maybe a 120.1 from the front if you have a short PSU and your rads are thin enough.

30mm RAD + 25mm fan = 55mm + some isolation.

Build with a 2*120 RAD internal on top

@ Flip_Lx, no not an option, to mnay sacrifices and to high flow restriction.

@ Pedalmonkey, an 2*120mm on the bottom blowing outwards could indeed be an option. Although i would have to sacrifce the genius system of mounting the HD's in that box.

@ pvtdonuts, i think he has space if he would remove his fillport.

@ NoobCake, it's (like pvtdonuts said) Google Sketch-up.

But besides the question if everything will fit, any remarks? The biggest doubt i have with the RADs.

Card Nox - My bad.. loong time since i played around with my P182 - probably gonna rebuild it agian - can't which case i like the most (P182 or V1000)

To nice builds you linked their - but as you can see bout will have trouble with high end boards that have mosfet heatsink.

pvtdonuts - I think there is space for a 5.25" drive up their just need to make a custom mount thingy..

And yes, high mosfets on the top of the board can give trouble, i currently have the GigaByte 965P-DS3, so that would not give me any troubles. For future updates i just have to take that into account with my decision.

I wanted everything internal, so I did manage to get a triple in the top of the case. The fans had to be put on the out side of the case (in push... boo), but only because on my MB there was a 3 or 4 MM clearance issue with the ram.
Look for the P182 case thread started by me.

I have since added a MCR120 to the front upper HD area with no modification necessary.

@ Intern, sjee that's one giant of a PSU :) Your RAM is located very low on your motherboard, you would have no problems fitting a a RAD + Fans at the top of your case.

@ WoZZeR999, yes i have seen your thread, although it might be effective I would rather have everything inside :).

I really wanted everything inside, but that was really the closes I could do with my motherboard. I could have used just 2 fans on the rad, and had everything internal, but I didn't want to waste fan space.

Unless you can find a motherboard with lowered ram and nothing on the top of the motherboard, it won't fit. My EP12v runs directly under the 320. I spend a good day trying to figure out how to get everything internal, and the closest I could do is to have the fans connected directly above the case. You could create a stand-off around the top of the case to make it *look* internal-ish.

I have a mcr320 rad in the top, a lain dcc 10w in the upper harddrive area, then a res in the back. That + 2xgpu blocks and cpu block. I'm planning to upgrade this to 2loops one with a lain dcc 10, mosfets, sb + nb and a BI pro, then my second loop with cpu + 2x gpu, lain dcc 18w, mcr320. I going for to get it all inside the chassi but i looks like i will have to place the BIpro rad in the back of the chassi if i don't modd my tagan 530w easycon.

Do you have your fans in the case as well on the top? What motherboard did you have? I *almost* got it to fit, but I couldn't get the fans in. I hope you have a good plan, or know you will do a decent amount of cutting, because I don't think 2x MCR320's will fit inside.

MCR320 are 34mm think if i'm not mistaking...BIP PRO and AlphaCool NexXxos are 30mm think...I think i can make an exact fit in the case, but off course the only way be to sure if to have the materials and start building.

Would the MCR320 give me a noticeble better temp then a MagiCool / BIP or NexXxos, because otherwise it's not worth taking that risk.

It depends on the fan. With quiet fans (lower CFM), the MCR is reasonably better, but at higher speeds(75-80+ CFM, LOUD!), the BIP is closer to the MCR.
I would not sacrifice the performance of the MCR just to make something fit.

Note: The BIP is 25mm thick (Much thinner than the 34 on the MCR).

Like I said in the topic start i'm planning on using my Scythe S-Flex F fans (1.600 rpm version) in combination with my Sunbeam Rheobus. A rpm of around 700 to 900 would be great because the fans are close to inaudioble for me then.

The most important thing for me is quitness.

The BIP also has another advantage over the MCR in this situation. The barbs are slightly closer to the middle of the radiator. This gives a bit more clearance for motherboard parts (if you have your barbs where the mobo is).

Thermochill FTW. anything else just sucks. :0

@ Tw1st3d, yes i have read that review, and yes it sucks assuming the chrome version performs the same as the normal one.

But at this review at Over-Clock UK the BIP GT performs pretty good, better then the AlphaCool NexXxox in every situation. It even comes pretty close to the former Cooltek and the current god of RADs : Thermochill.

@ Erasmus354, that would be usefull knowing the barbs are indeed above the motherboard which would allow for a wider bend from the RAD to the CPU.

@ Pedalmonkey, thanks for you complety useless reaction cause the fact that the RAD is to thick. Furthermore i hate flames.

woah card, srry didnt mean to offend. i was just having some fun. but if you want my actual 2 cents of what thin rad to use, it would be a BIP GT. especialy if your willing to suffer through loudish fans. and GTX will outperform the PA series with higher flow fans and i think the GT is the same just thinner IIRC.

Lol no problem :D. And thanks for your opinion, I indeed heared that the BIP performs pretty well cause of the tight space between the fins, which automatically means that it performs well with high CFM.

I want to spin my fans @ app. 900 rpm. Although connected to a RAD the air movement will make some more noise then when they are being used as a casefan. Therefor i will probably drop the speed to 600 or so.

Nja, i think the choice of the RAD will not make a difference of 5 degrees, but i just want to make sure i buy what's actually the best value-for-money for me :)

Dose any one know if the thermalright mosfets + sb/nb blocks will cool my striker extreme enough with my E6750 @ 25% OC? I will be getting this h2o upgrade for a start:

The loop will go res-pump-radiator-cpu-gpu-gpu-res or res-pump-gpu-gpu-cpu-rad-res. The second one will look best in my p180b.

@Card Nox: I would go with the MCR if you want low cfm fans. Thermochill may be a tad better, but it's also way too thick to put in the top (or almost anywhere in the tiny P182).

@LsdBoy: First on the Mosfets, I noticed that the P182 has a dead spot in the corner, even with the 2 fans there. The NB/SB should be fine with a fan in the upper HD area, but you will want some other form of cooling for the PWM area. The Thermalright may work ok since it has a larger height, I'm not sure because I never ended up actually using it on my mobo. As for the loop, what kind of GPU's are you running, because 2 will dump a decent amount of heat. A 25% O/C isn't that much, so it may work out ok, but the temps will not be as low as they could be (if that is even your primary goal).

I have 1 120mm noctua NF-s12 @ 7v in the rear, and 3x120mm noctua NF-s12 @ 7vin the top outside my p180 sucking the air out. My gpu's are 2x6800gs. My goal is not super low temps, but i want low temps and a silent system.

My current rig is:
Astek WaterChill Antarctica ghetto modded to fit socket 775
2xAlphacool NexXxoS NVXP-3
Alphacool Laing DCC 10w + ultra top
MRC 320 radiator
+6x120mm noctua NF-s12 @ 7v. But my orginal nb/sb + mosfetscooling isen't good enough and the system shut's itself down when i play a game o long without a fan blowing at the NB + mosfets.

I'm thinking of having the Thermalright HR-05 SLI/IFX "High Riser" @ my nb with the base @ the rear fan. Then a Thermalright HR-05/IFX "High Riser" for my SB. My striker E has enough space betwen the pci- 16x ports and it would not block my standard pci port where i have my x-fi extreme music.

For the water loop, you would probably be fine, since you are looking for silence over the best temps possible. You may want to look into getting a spot cooler for the PWM area, as the NB area should have a decent amount of flow.

Have you tracked the temps of the NB and PWM after your long gaming sessions?

@ WoZZeR999, Thermochill is indeed way to thick. MCR = 4mm thicker then the others. Sjee why did Antec not build it 1 or 2 CM higher :)

@ LsdBoy, i understand u want feedback but maybe it's usefull to make a new topic so that it will be 1 subject per topic?

I wish the P182 was just a tad taller, wouldn't have to have my fans in push. I will keep that in mind for the next mobo/case purchase though, which ever comes first.

I'm going to cut a hole in the 5.25" drive baycage so i have that and a dual radiator in front at same time.

There is space for 1, 5.25" drive in the top, if the radiator is tad smaller than MCR220 or have the fittings at the buttom..

Has a Alphacool NexXxoS Pro III Radiator - Rev. 2 and it seems it's not hanging over the motherboard at all, and even if so it's just a tiny bit. The nice thing is that he also has his fans in pull mode.

I think it would be a problem for me to have my PA120.3 in the top, since the PA is just to thick or the case isnt high enough. Ur choise how to see it :P
The mosfet cooler might be in the way aswell...

Maybe Ill just mount it external on top of the case, or on the back like xisio. Time will tell :)

@ xisio, nice build, only a pity that you mixed two kinds of metal. Furthermore is has nothing to do with my needs because i wanted everything internally.

@ Intern, yes it's way to thick to be fitted in the top. You could choose to have or your fans or you RAD outside the case and the other component inside.

I'm using all Copper components. I don't want to add any chemical fluids to improve my temps with 1 degree. Don't really like it, besides i'm going to use black tubes so any visual effect would be invisible, except for in the RES.

Either mount the radiator externally, or bring it all the way to the 'front' if on the inside, and might be able to slip the edge of the motherboard BEHIND it.

Yeah old revive. Should be moved to Work projects maybe?

I tried that rad setup in a p182 and it wouldn't work. Not enough mobo clearance. I ended up replacing the blackIce stealth with a thermochill, mounted fans internally and rad on top.

This was my first P180 watercooling system. It was also the inspiration for making my brackets! Maybe it will help you.

That fillport holder... is exactly what I've been trying to construct some form of for a WHILE! Are they for sale, super-cheap?

I think it's just a pom holder for the EK multires reservoirs and other reservoirs ;)

I have the same case, i have a 3x rad on top of the case, i wanted to fit it inside, but there is no way without losing a cd rom drive or other space for more then 2 hds

I also have a P182 with a 360rad on top, PA120.3 to be exact, and i't's on the case, and the fans are on it at the top :)

maybe I should buy some extra fans so I kan do a pus/pull config on the PA120.3 :), would be awesome :)

Actually I machined that custom to hold the fillport.

Indeed Quad-Damage. Orginally I planned to make it all internal, so RAD and fans, that's also the reason why i choose the MCW320 instead of the PA120.3. Unfortunately I couldn't get it the way i wanted because of the lack of space above the mobo. Anywayz i'm still happy with my case and the performance it has, especially considered it's low low low noise ;).

If I will buy a new case the Silverstone TJ07 is a big contender, but for now this case is enough for me ;)

You can build it youself. Just but a piece of Acryl from A.C. Ryan and start reading how-to's ;)

There are much better ones already, but here's mine. I'm pretty happy with it for now.

@ Card Nox, Yes indeed the Silverstone TJ07 is a very, very good case, but muchos Euros....:cool:

@ Adderall, define better? I'm currently using atleast two 5,25'' bays so your build would be useless in my case. Beside that i'm also cooling my GPU so your RAD would be a little bit 'tight' for me.

And why am I now receiving email from a reaction in this thread made 11-16-2008, 08:06 PM ??? Some software bug or something?

yeah I got a bunch of emails earlier this week to threads I had subscribed to... but they were very delayed. something must be messed up.

Ah, I didn't know you had more than one 5.25 bay... so yeah, my setup wouldn't work for you unless you cut and dropped the rad lower where the HDD are.

Looks like most of the 'heavier' (cpu,gpu,nb, etc) cooling setups are difficult to achieve in a p182 if you want to keep everything internal.

I'm also like using 3 5.25 bays of my p182, and in the nearby future like all the 4 of them :eek:

but atm, no watercooling, sold my gigabyte bord, a asus P5Q-e is the board I'll purchase this weekend, than back on wc, now @ my secondary pc ...

I have to say the P182 is a bad case to WC, i had one, I gave it to my mother for her PC... I went the TJ-07 instead... forget the cost, and just buy one ;)
I spent many months measuring the P182 to see what I could squeeze in there... its TOOO tight for comfort regardless of how much modding you are willing to do, for a BIG case its really small inside, I would say unless you want to completely redo all the internals, your not gonna fit a triple rad in well... IMHO of course

Here is my solution, just needed some bolts and spacers from Lowes

@ gazmtk, i assume you didn't read the whole topic since i've done the build already a long time ago. I know it's not as spacious as some other cases but it does well imho. If I'll buy a new case it wil probably be the TJ-07. Just LOVE those murdermods!

nah I kinda skimmed through, ive been awake 56hrs roughly atm, so my brain is going into lock down, nothing is really registering anymore :(
Just had nothing but dramas with my P182, im looking at getting another and ripping out all the guts to see what I can actually do with it.... :)

wcing this case is a nightmare. I gave up and will be building an external radbox instead.

Is there a way you can fit 2 pa120.2's at the bottom in front of the PSU. It would take some cutting but i was worried about them not having enough air flow going to them with only one fan pushing in air and 4 pulling out air.

You may be able to fit a rad sandwich down there, with rad grills on both side panels...

I would have tried to put the res the other way. So that the output is to the right ;)

I also have S-Flex 1600rpm on the rad connected to a Sunbeam Rheobus fancontroller. But i choose to put the fans internal to reduce the noise and keep it as much in the case as possible.

nono, I ain't LC'ing my secondary, that's for the future, maybe march (Supreme/fusion V2, PA120.2, LAing DCC, multires) , My pc is currently a mix of the part's of my main with my secondary, since my E2160 is sold, also my gigabyte EX38-DS5 is sold, I'm like kind back at aircooling, and the HD4870 is quite noisy, tomorrow I'll clean my PA120.3, because there's still a lot of dirt in it, and than maybe I'l build my current PC in my lovely P182 untill I have a P5Q-e in here

but I'm out of coolant, there's just distilled water ... ^^
