3 big rads, I would like to see this... although I think the Cosmos S is more water cooling friendly interesting what this will be :)

You could undermount one of the 320s...but the support rails would have to be modified...but it could happen...then the 220 would have to be mounted vertically against HDD cage..if all it does is chipset cooling with a 355 recirculated case air would still work.

It would be nice to have three loops...I'm still cogitating.

You plan on fitting all three of those rads inside the case? Either way looking forward to updates....

Where did you order that model from? Newegg doesn't have the windowed ones... Also, is the front door removable? Would be pretty annoying if you had fan controllers.

The windowed version is a FROZEN CPU mod option...

The front door is hinged w/ option to open from either side: the front door can also be completely removed, so front mounted fan controllers are not a problem.

These case companies never make it easy for us. Why can't they design cases where the radiators are just a drop in perfect fit? I guess that's the reason why MM is in business.

Cosmos S has good compatibility for 360mm rads in the top of the case with no modding.

Well I spent a few hours doing layouts and thinking about options and ended up fitting the 320 to the bottom, the 220 to the top and a PA 160 internally.

I was wanting to maintain the stock appearance...and not get some funky looking top that stuck up past the case profile. So I went with the 220 up top as it would fit under the plastic shroud with a little trimming of some webs in the shroud.

The 320 fits without much modification on the bottom and is 90% hidden from view anyway.

The PA fit perfectly in a vertical position against the HDD bay.

I was able to leave a lot of the chassis intact which was the plan.

The RaptorX HDDs are going on display so I am not concerned with the funky HDD trays that slide into the bays. Cooling for the Raptors will be via an inexpensive HDD cooler that screws to the underside of the drive.

This will free up the HDD bays for the pumps...

I checked the thickness of the rad against the trim and rails (chassis upside down in shot) and found there was sufficient room to mount the rad.

I test fit the TT 850PSU and a pair of 120mm fans in the floor of the case. Sure enough CM has allowed enough room for these. It would have been even better if the floor of the chassis did not already have a grill in it..as the grill does not line up to a dual fan location.

Even with the shroud and fan there will be clearance for the largest of GFX cards. There's 10.5" from the backplane to the fan on the shroud.

As you can see there is plenty of breathing room for the bottom mounted fans and plenty of clearance for the plumbing and HW.

This looks good. I hate rads mounted outside of the case. They just look horrible and unstable. I think you maximized the space available very well and have come up with the optimum solution. Good job for now. Can't wait to see how it looks when finished...

RE Custom res...I was thinking of making one to occupy two optical bays divided vertically into three chambers...Then put a matte balck face plate over that with three "sight glass" slots...

Might go with Black Red and Clear fluids...

Another option is to use three EK reservoirs and have them mounted in some tasteful manner...I prefer external reservoirs..much easier to deal with.

Just came back from AFK...RAD positions are clever and Spot On CD...can't wait to see tubing routes...waddaya think about paint colors guys...internal will be matte black...leaning towards the black/red family; shows off lighting best IMO...

Cool update: the special rivets and high strength Rivet gun arrived while I was out of town so I am going to be ready to take apart the chassis tomorrow. Unfortunately it's not painting weather right now: rain and cold.

So anyways Cyber, why not use a 140mm fan on the PA160?
It would allow the shroud to be much smaller, and not jet into the case awkwardly.
Just a suggestion mind you, don't want to step on the mighty CD's shoes. ;)

Well the 140mm fans are pretty good that I got from Petras (Yate Loon) so that's a good idea. I just have so many PA 160 shrouds it was an easy solution...but further down the line I might make up a shroud for a 140.

A quick preface: the chassis is complex...meaning lots of areas to paint/coat and before I took it to pieces I needed to get some special rivets that mount flush. And of course I needed to document the process.

Part of what I enjoy about taking things apart is seeing the thought some designers put into it. The Cosmos is etremely well made. Every part keys together with a specific combination of rivet hole and detent. It's virtually impossible to put it together wrong...if you are paying attention.

Something like this will allow me to keep the structure intact and still p;romote an exhaust "breeze" for the PA160. The WD 400GB HDD will mount on Scythe AntiVibration Mounts directly above and catch the cooling..win win.

It's not the powdercoating service that is expensive: it's me taking the case apart, putting it back together and the time involved.;)

For something simple like this which is just satin black I got lucky: the place is doing a bunch of parts so doing mine with them is expedient.

There are literally thousands of colors to choose from...and textures. Everything you can imagine really.

Some of the nicer finishes are three coats: base, color, clear...so they are triple the cost in material.

Add to that the interesting colors that need to be ordered in are an extra expense....then triple that extra expense for the process.

Sooo this particular job is not too expensive...and beat painting them.

But for a really custom coat it might be cheaper to paint...

Got the parts back this AM and they are perfect. I am loving it...super fast turnaround, excellent workmanship...I'll be sending them all of my powdercoating work from now on.

Putting the case together this PM and will be posting some shots of the glorious satin black (color code: Cascade) chassis.

I'm getting a 'Ferrari Red' Cosmos tomorrow (for £50!) and because the Tubby Custard Machine (named after the pink coolant mix I use) needs a bigger home (can't fit my Meanwell clone TEC PSU), the red goes nicely with the sofas in our living room, the wife approves and gave me the retro idea and a Cosmos 1000 for £50 is a bargain.

I'm planning to do a Retro-Futurist make over incorporating analogue dials, shiny polished copper cooling pipes with glass view ports, blood red fluid.

One major mod I plan to do to the case is to cut access holes in the motherboard tray behind ti CPU, VRMs, Northbridge & Southbridge. Will this have a negative impact on EMI (received or transmitted) or structural integritty?

Who are you getting that form for 50 pounds?

Well guys I was really hoping to report better news but the Damned Powdercoat shop LOST one of the key parts: that part pictured above that has the PA160 attached to it.

The part also supports the optical bay sides, motherboard tray, attaches to the front and bottom panels and basically makes the chassis rigid.

I discovered this after I started assembling the chassis and called and they looked but did not find the part.

So I bought another Cosmos case just to get the part.

Not a happy monkey about this turn of events but my #1 prioroity is to get the job done regardless of obstacles.


This makes another delay and I appreciate flyingA2 for hanging tough while I await the new case.

TBH I never want to see those powdercoat people again...but they are going to have to coat the new case for me...and I will replicate a part from acrylic for flyingA2's case once I have the new piece to work from.

Lucky for me I already have the new case sold and will just need to take it apart long enough to get the dimensions of the piece.

Seems like every build has some challenge to hurdle...

I wonder what a teflon coating would look like? Aside from the expense, which I assume would be high, I wonder if teflon would promote "slick" airflow.

Once again I gotta hand it to Provantage.com for having a great price and super fast shipping. Two days by UPS Ground is pretty nice.

I'll tear down the new case and geet the part out and use it to design and fab up one from acrylic that will also be a shroud for the PA160 and a 140mm fan. This part will also hold, cool, and display the two Raptor X drives so it's a complex item...an it's structural because it supports the HDDs, ODDs, attaches to the mobo tray the bottom and front panels...

I have the chassis rivetted together except for the top panel. This way I have all the parts almost in proper alignment and I can easily test and mount the acrylic part.

I'll take some shots of the chassis today. It looks good.

(if you did teflon, or another kind of non-stick, you'd have to call your PC the "teflon Don"....sh1t doesn't stick to it LOL).

Maybe even duracote...like you'd do to a .45 cal 1911.

TBH the stock finish on the Comsos chassis is really nice for a PC chassis... but this color suits the theme of the build best.

I was wanting to know if it is possible for you to teflon coat
the interior (dismateld into pieces before shipping of course) pieces
of an aluminum PC case? My cohorts and I are looking into this as a
highly slick, and dust resistant coating to promote "slick" airflow and
fewer cleanings. I can provide dimensions and number of pieces if this is possible.

I got the new case taken apart and have pretty much figured out how to make up the acrylic part...it's going to be a royal PITA...especially with the HDDs mounted in there in some removable manner...

I should just hot glue them in place :p:

I own a Cosmos 1000 and have a question. I'd like to spray the inside of my Cosmos to black (using paint) but does it affect the thermal aspect of it since aluminium reduces heat a lot better?

Initial observation shows that my CM690 gives better temps/air flow compared to my stock Cosmos :(

Cosmos 1000 chassis is steel, not aluminum.

Cyber - wondering if the CPU is as good as the 6850 that I sent you?... Have you tested it yet?

I guess that was the point of your query, sorry. My gut feel is that any effect would be negligible? I'm planning the same thing, though, so it would be excellent if someone could confirm my guess.

No worries Ted :) I know that the paint would form a layer over the SECC/aluminium and if it traps the heat then there's no point to do it. Not to forget that black absorbs heat the most, lol.

I'm guessing it won't cause too much of a problem, but I suppose that's really only because I've seen so many (skilled) people do it.

I was thinking the same thing about the absorption, but it occurred to me - isn't it the case that black just absorbs light the most? So here it'd be okay? Note: i failed science class.

LOL, I'm just as confused when it comes to the laws of heat, etc. My physics and maths sucks. I guess we'll just have wait for someone to respond. Btw, most of the paint produces glossy finishing and I'd like the inner part to have matt finishing instead.

You'd think I'd be better at this stuff, considering all the classes I took 2 or 3 times.:D

Black does not reflect light, meaning it absorbs the UV, Which causes heat.

Honestly, you would be very hard pressed to notice any difference between a normal coloured case (or even one that has a reflective inside) and a case with black insides. The amount of heat dissipated from the actual case itself is so small that it simply won't make any difference. You'd see bigger changes in temperatures just by tweaking airflow inside the case.

That sounds reasonable. You know, I'm also thinkin' that, if there were any noticeable difference, we'd probably be seing ads for all kinds of "extreme gaming paint." ;)

I seriously doubt it. That was a very nice CPU you sent me. THat booger was Folding stabe 24/7 at 4ghz...a first for me. I ended up selling it and the killer Voltmodded P5K3dlx with total Chipset LC as a package on a techstation I had built last year. Reports back say it's still running strong.

Sorry Guy UV does not cause heat, your thinking of infrared wavelengths. Black absorbs all wave lengths of radiation, it also will release heat faster than any other color, matte black especially.

You know, there's so much mention of black interior paint, without mention of any thermal issues, in the painting 101 sticky that I'm positive there's little or zero diff.

The only real difference is the case will warm up to its maximum temp slighly faster. On a pc running 24/7 it's not going to make much difference unless the outside is also painted matt black. Then the material the case is made of is also has thermal resistance so an aluminum case painted matt black inside and out will transfer the heat to the outside of the case slightly faster but not enough to make any real difference.

In theory it could aid cooling, in practice it probably only helps in underventilated systems.

Teflon is a nice idea though!
