[Uni] nVidia 9800GTX overclking test (Air)

single card pre-test,

will finish dual-sli & tri-sli soon after.

9800GTX Spec：
vGPU=1.2v~1.21v idle, 1.26~1.27v load
vRam=2.0v

ambient=18c，GPU idle=35c，load=53c（100% fan speed）

overclking results summary：
1）Driver 174.20 might have some bug，3Dmark03 result 20% lower than normal，3Dmark05/06 ok.
2）heat same as 8800gts (better cooler but 0.02v vGPU higher)
3）GPU core overclking better (better PCB/PWM/Cooling)
4）vRam overclking better (0.8ns, better PCB/PWM)
5）perf_lvl same as 8800gts clk 2 clk. (only deafault clk higher)

Pretty good 06 score for 4GHz Wolfdale too. So it looks it will have a slight advantage over 8800GTS (of course won't change my fact that this 9800 series sucks still but at least it's something).

I'm surprised it can do 850 MHz with only 0.02v more than the G92 GTS. Ahh, must be because of better PCB/PWM/larger heatsink and slightly better quality chip. On the GTS, the voltage has to be increased by a full 0.1v before it can do 800 MHz.

Shaders at 2160Mhz is amazing, BUT

BUT...

BUT...

The memory still sucks man, big-time and there are still only 16 ROP's. We need a 100% better performing card for those DX10 Vista games, not just a 20% better card... and it's long over-due.

You are using a 45nm 4Ghz quad core. The 9800GTX is getting 16k in 06 with a 45nm 4Ghz dual core

A quad core will add about 1k - 1.5k to the score in 06. If you take the 3797 that the dual core scored and substituted it for your 5.5k CPU score, your score is not even 11k. Compare that to the 16.4k that the 9800GTX scored and we have a significant step up from a 8800GTS 512MB

I have my answer. You cannot compare the scores from a dual core to a quad core in 06. As I said if you substitute your 5.5k score for the 4k score that the dual core got, you score is not even in the same ballpark. 11k vs 16k. The 9800GTX looks like it has some teeth.

if i put their 4k score for cpu then i am about 14500.
so there is a slight increase.
my GTS is at 800/1100/2000

If you add roughly 5.5k CPU score (which is roughly what a quad will score at 4Ghz) to the numbers that the 9800GTX got. The score is almost 18k.

8800GTS @ 850/1150MHz E6850 @ 4275mhz

And the wolfdale they're using is quicker than the E6850 clock for clock so evens out.

i said it will be no difference if 8800gts 512m at the same clk.

if u like to see quadcore score at 4Ghz or 4.5Ghz or even more, i will update later.
with card at the same speed, 4.5G qx9650, 3dmark06 break 19k easily :)

Not all that. Mine, stock cooling no mods.

If you make the assumption that Nvidia is releasing this card thinking that the enthusiast community (who still own 88 GTX's/GT's/G92 GTS's) is going to spend $400 to get a couple hundred extra points in 3D06, or 1 or 2 FPS in Crysis, it just doesn't make sense... Who would actually do that?

No one goddamit! And I was dreaming about finding a really cheap GTX when this will be available.I guess people will be holding unto their GTX's and Ultras untill DirectX 11 comes out...

Yeah. A DirectX 10 game would be perfect. And please bench Crysis with that CPU and the 9800GTX oc'ed, if it still doesn't run well, that game is hopeless.

With the stock heatsink and fan turned to 100% and default volts set to the same as the default volts of a 9800GTX, yes.

They're the same core.

Awesome sounds good!:) Imo 19k is quite alright(better then what i thought it was going to be anyway!) I'll be getting two just because i currently have no 8800s, but if i did i would certainly say not worth the upgrade. Unless it manages to pull some nice numbers in games which we have yet to see...

VERY Nice OC's. But i still hate the 256 bus and ram.
This will be a super quick card though. But really if you have 8800GTX/Ultra or G92 then you wouldn't need it.

Unfortunately Crysis seems to be the only real strain on a GPU. Someone said it earlier, I think it's going to take a complete architecture overhaul, more mem bus, higher vram to attack Crysis.

@ fornowagain, the 174.20 drivers are a bit slower than the 169.21 set. For comparable results you need to use the same drivers. When using the 174.20 set I loose about 300-500 points in 06.

holy moly! my 8800gtx that is a weak overclocker 620/980 max will get about 12500 points so for 9800gtx and 8800gts 512 to get 16k at 850 core with a dual core cpu is very nice i must say. I wish that we could get like 20fps more in games instead of 4k in a "useless?" benchmark.

But calling this card a "9800gtx" is pretty much useless just like the 06 benchmark is nowadays.

as an 8800 GTX owner, results like this are hard to interpret. With my quad at 4.5 I can almost hit 16500 on 3DM06. So these "inferior" cards outperform mine by a serious margin. I know that conventional wisdom states that the GTX is a better piece of hardware than the GTS 512 but seeing that it scores so much higher on 3Dmark kinda shakes my confidence...

Confidence in graphics hardware, graphics benchmarking, and most importantly the companies that are trying to sell us their products. If the GTX is truly better than these G92 cards, what are we left to assume? Is Nvidia creating products that produce no real world performance increase, but look better and better in benchmarks to facilitate more spending?

Should I get an 8800 GTS 512 so I can keep up with 3dmark???

I don't have the card any more, on to the X2. For truly comparable results they need to be on the same machine, either way the results won't change that much. Its the same core, pretty much the same card save for the 0.83ns ram and improved power. Sad :down:

The only thing that's missing is a Ultra model for the 9 series, than they have a nice cashcow series....

Man this really sucks, hope the RV770 will bring some power. This nV 9 series is a real suck out.

The 6600GT was a killer part in it's time. The 7600 to 8600 was a little sad, but the 9600's 2x faster if not more than the previous part it replaced. It looks like getting 2x the NV perf will require the SLI on a card 9800GX2 + a game optimized to use it. :down:

actually, I'm excited about the 9 series... The result of these new cards is a firesale on 8800 GTXs. I'll just pick up an extra one (or two) of those for 1/2 the price of a 9 series... Tri-sli on the über cheap!!!

err, you don't get anymore RAM in a SLI setup. If you have 3 cards with 2 GB RAM each, you still only have a total of 2GB of video RAM not 6. This is because all 3 of the cards RAM contains the same information since they are all working on rendering the same scene at the same point in time. This gives you a total amount of RAM of one card. = 2GB. ;)

Well thats true as I do ;) 512mb hardly cuts it for my HD3850 and try it with a 256mb with texture packs..

But the massive improvement in smoothness of my Q6600/8800GTX system was as much due to many other reasons though.

If possible, could you undo your overclocks, raise your PCI-express bus and use core monitoring software to check if the card is automatically overclocked with the PCI-e bus? Like in this article on the 9600GT. Would be sweet if it's this easy to overclock GPU's in the future and no more software running at Windows startup.

Thanks in advance and it would be great if you could have some game benchmarks (just benchmarks, you don't have to play them).

but... he'd need to test the performace in 3dmark or games at difference PCI-e clocks since current monitoring software doesn't detect the PCI-e based frequency properly.
