Hello, I have the following Q6600 CPU's to choose from:

L736B272
L737B437

Which batch should I take? I'm thinking L737B440, since I've googled it and found out that it has a VID of 1.2V, but that's all the info I could get. Any fast feedback here would be awesome, I need to order tonight :up:
The VID isn't the same on each CPU, regardless of batch similarities. Sorry. :(
mine is 727B I think and runs 475fsb at 3.8G with 1.4V on water but is not stable at 4G any settings.Dont see it on the list.
Had a 738B needed 1.75V at 425fsb and 3.8G.

Either a L737B, a L737A or a L748A (I think I've read somewhere the new L748A were wuite good, but the L737B might be a better safe choice...)
737B can be a bit of a gamble, as some carry high 1.325 VIDs. In my experience, higher numbered 737Bs are more likely to be poor OCers than low number 737Bs.
Ah, what to do, what to do... I guess it's all gamble, just wondering which batch will give me the highest chance for a good chip :)
I'd be inclined to go for the L748A475. I've heard a lot of good things about the mid- to late- L74x's, with quite a few getting 4.0+ Ghz stable for 24/7 clocks.

Look, my batch is L740B126 too, and it is a very good one:
3.6GHz at 1.33v real, 3.8GHz (8x475) 1.43v real
Look in my signature link. I also saw a guy here (see G0 topic) with same batch and same OC but lesser volts at 3.8GHz
L737B high numbers like you are reported to be really bad
In any case, don't get anything previous to L737B as they are more prone to be higher VID
Go with one of the L737B's, they have the best track record of the ones you are considering.

I have had the pleasure of working with four Q6600 G0s before settling on what I believe will be a golden chip for my needs.
The first is an L734A with a VID of 1.275. Not a bad chip, but certainly not a superstar. On my evga 680i, it maintains a stable 3.6ghz at 1.48v with temps in the mid-high 50s at load on water. I've had a rather rocky relationship with this chip, but at least it's stable at 3.6ghz.
The next two were high number L737B6s. Both had VIDs of 1.325 and both couldn't maintain 3.6ghz stable. Both chips have since been sold. One of them, in fact, has an interesting issue where one core runs a good 10-15c cooler than the other three, regardless of cooling used or the quality of the mount. So far the best speculation I've heard about this chip's issue is that the cool core isn't receiving as much voltage as the other three.
The final chip, and the one I'll be keeping long term, is a L737B266. This lower number L737 is proving to be quite a chip, although I haven't yet benched it at high clocks. It has a VID of 1.2375 and can do a stable 3ghz at at default BIOS voltage which results in 1.173 under load. No other chip I've had can do 3ghz stable with stock voltage.
Ultimately it's always a gamble, regardless of the batch you select. Based upon my own experience and research, I would avoid high number L737B as I mentioned in a previous post. The 400s you're looking at may be quite good however. Unfortunately, you can research until your blue in the face, but since every chip is different, it really won't amount to much. Just consider th e trends you've seen and make a pick :)
How high were the numbers in those 2 crappy L737B you tested?
I don't remember the final two digits since I sold them, but they were both in the sixes. One distinct difference (on the packaging, no less) between these bad 737s and my current good 737 is that the bad 737s had a pack date in December 07, while my good 737 has a pack date in November.
If you can take a look at the actual box, see when the pack date is and if the word SLACR is seperated from the product code (as it is on newer boxes.) If so, I would be inclined to avoid those chips and select another batch.
Well, the problem is I can't look at the box - the chips are OEM editions. So I only get the chip, without the box and stock cooling.
Also, the chips I presented here are suppose to be made in 06-07/2007, at least that's what the guy selling them says.
I'm still not sure which to get, I'm thinking the L737B437 or L748A475.
Well that's interesting. Later batches are made at later times. The G0s available in 06-07 have batch numbers in the low L720s. Every L737 I've seen has a pack date in 11/07 or 12/07. 740s are obviously more recent chips. Of course, a pack date may not correspond at all to a fabrication date, but who knows when that was? The only date listed with a specific processor is a pack date.

I wrote to the guy who's selling them if he can give me some info about the VID's of those chips. He told me he's testing each portion of the CPU's he gets before selling them, he has acces to hundrends of chips. Perhaps he will help me find a good batch with a decent VID, that would definitely boost my chances in finding a great chip, but I don't know if he's that much willing ;) Either way he has good price on those Quads, they are only 250$ when I turn my home currency into USD. The normal price for a Box version here is 330-350USD :)
OK, he agreed to search for a good batch + VID this week, since he's getting a new portion of chips which he has to check anyway. When I get more data I'll post it here.

It's simply a listing of people with G0 chips and what VID and batch they have. Note that German convention is to use , as a decimal seperator instead of .
I have that exact batch and VID is 1.2000V. It goes all the way to 3.6Ghz with ease. Haven't tested anything above that as I don't have watercooling so the 4 cores are up to 70s and I had to stop. That was based on 9x400 with just 1.3V juice.Quote:

The L737 is by far the best of the three, only problem is cores 0,1 are 7-10C hotter than cores 2,3 always. I have crappy cooling (freezer 7 pro) and crappy MB (ip35-e with huge vdroop, 1.4050v bios, 1.288v under load??!) and temp is stopping me from clocking high, was priming at 400x9 for an hour when temp hit 78 and I chickened out. Will get the xigmatek and test more.
The L738 was a lot cooler though, had it 24 hours prime stable at 385x9, 1.5v bios, 1.4v under load and was under 70C the whole time.

thanks for clearing that up, i had no idea and it just look similar....
of course changing it will change nothing about your cpu, but volt mods are useful for el-cheapo ECS boards. in fact i remember doing exactly that to my e4300 so it boots at 1.4v

OK, I ordered a L737B393, the guy tested it and give me screens from CoreTemp 0.95.4. The VID is 1.0875 so it looks fishy, but my m8 checked his Q6600 with the same CoreTemp version and it showed his VID properly so dunno :shrug:
Anyways I'm getting it on this friday or next monday, I'll post some results then.
When VID is that low it means Speedstep is enabled. This can cause the VID reading to fluctuate. I guarantee that it won't actually be that low in reality. However, the 737B should be a good chip indeed. Let us know how it performs!
The vids should go in this range: 1.20v - 1.3250
Anything lower then that is because Core are not in full load or using power saving options.
I also got a new Q6600 and I started to play with it. My last one (L739A466) had a 1.2875v VID.
The new Q6600 Batch #L745A793 has a 1.2125v VID and the first thing I noticed is the low volts the mobo posted for stock speeds, only 1.20vcore against 1.31v from last cpu.
It's only using 1.26v-1.28v to run stable at 3600Mhz (400*9) and I'm finding way easier to find the sweep spot then the high Vid version:

Yes you are right, still all the other tested models had a detected VID of 1.1625. And what about SpeedStep and frequency? On the shot CoreTemp still showed 2400mhz.

So what about VID and speedstep? I asked my m8 with a Q6600 and ASUS Maximus to enable it and set frequences and voltages in bios on defaults, still even the old CoreTemp does not change VID.
If not the speedstep, I did noticed VID change on my QX9650 after Vdroop pencil mod on P5E. It went from 1.0350V to 1.1250V.
OK, I got the CPU yesterday and build the new rig today. The VID of the CPU is 1.2125 :up: I'm running 3600MHz at the moment with 1.35V, but that still needs stability tests and perhaps I'll be able to push it higher. I'll post some stable results tomorrow or later this night.
This is a bit off topic, but I'm trying find some sort of relationship between VID and core temperatures. Has anyone had a number of Q6600's with various VID's that can post core temperatures in relation to VID? The reason I'm asking is because my Q6600 runs stable at 3.76GHz, 1.53 vcore, 8x470 but my temps are very high even with a generous watercooling loop!
