780i SPP/NF200 (NB) Water Block from Viper John - Finally!!

Sheesh, I knew it would only be a matter of time....

I saw this on another forum but wanted to make sure everyone here saw it who is interested in cooling the massively hot SPP/NF200 (north bridge) chipset in the new 780i board.

My SPP temps hit 90c at boot up and easily get over 100c during benching runs with the POS air solution that nVidia provides. Here's the missing link to get the NB, SB, and mosfets cooled nicely. Can anyone say better overclocks...certainly more stable oc's?

It will not interfere with the card in the #1 PCIe slot. It's a big block because there's two hot little chip to cool...the SPP chipset (the 680i NB chip) and the NF200 PCIe 2.0 bridge chipset. It has to cover them both and have 4 point to mount to.

I have one on order...I'll throw it in a loop with my EK NF4 Rev 1.1 for the SB and my EK 780i mosfet I & II blocks for the mosfets and report my findings. I know my SB is hitting 100c during benching runs...this with a 50mm 19cfm fan blowing directly onto the nVidia heat sink. I am looking for 30c on the SB, 40C on the NB and 30c on either mosfet area....

I have a 680i and thinking about going to a 780i i already have the ek rev 1.1 and mofset blocks but i know the ek 680i nb block doesn't fit.

MIPS has released SPP and MCP blocks for the 780i. Here's a link for SPP version:

I don't understand german but I'm pretty sure from the description that you can use the MCP block with 3-way SLI.

I really like the size of the block, even if size itself doesn't say much about cooling abilities. The $75 is a bit steep.

The Asus Striker II Extreme... (Extreme and not Formula ! ) has its own built in NB waterblock, like the Maximus Extreme.

Aren't those pretty restrictive? It'd be great if it were just a waterblock for the northbridge, instead of directing the water through an arcane heatpipe maze over the MOSFETS and southbridge.

Oh yeah. They're restrictive. However, you wouldn't care if you were to build a seperate loop for that. After all, its only the chipsets, and once you get it out of the way, you can get down to cooling the important stuff.

I personally wouldn't put the NB with the cpu anyway. The SPP and MCP are hot suckers.

I agree...my SB hits 102c when I am benching:shocked:

I want to get the NB/SB/mosfets under control so when I have to crank up the volts for extreme benching they won't hold back my other overclocks due to thermal instability. That's why they'll get their own loop with decent if not top notch components. (see my sig for the planned loop)

In all fairness, the Viper John block looks less restrictive than the MIPS solution so that's why it gets my order as I'll have it in a loop with three other blocks. When the EK 780i NB cooler comes out I will prolly order it and compare it to the Viper John block....and sell off the lesser performing block.

The WB is 3.100" long by 2.280" wide. That is as small as I could make it and pick up all four mounting holes and the NF200 chip too.

Negative on interference with the GFX card. The stock cooler is a heck of a lot closer.

REMOUNT the stock SPP/MCP cooler before your loose the MCP. The foam surrounds used on the stock coolers are to thick and do not compress enough to allow good cooler base to chip die contact....especially on the MCP.

When I first got my 780i MCP was running 70C_ but would drop 20-25C just by pushing down on the stock MCP heatsink with my finger. I pulled the stock cooler off and level cut the foam surrounds (just the surrounds) on the MCP, SPP and NF200 chip to .050" high then remounted with Tunig TX-II. MCP temps dropped to 45-46C after that with the stock cooler.

None of those chips are not particularly hard to cool. You just need a good mount.

For a production block I can agree, but for instance the CPU block I just made took me from 6PM on a saturday night until about 11:30PM, and then another 45 minutes to clean up the shop.

That would work out to about $8 an hour if you take out materials. In-N-Out hamburger starts at $9.25.

Thanks for the sage advice...this board I currently have is getting rma'd due to the dreaded "FF" post code that won't go away. When I get the new board I'll be water cooling the SB so there'll be no worries....

No, theres a new bug where 'FF' shows up upon startup and won't go away, the C1 error was the 680i's memory issue

780i is an improvement on the 680i in many areas but they've still got the same guy mounting the chipset sinks.
Remounting them should be done first thing out of the box.

@Philly Boy,
That S/B finger poke was fun with the 680i too. Watching the temps go up n down as the sink rocked back n forth.

I actually got to bench a little last night. I had the CMOS battery out of the original board for days and tried it and whammo...it booted. But that's in another thread...

I tried the finger poke mod that Viper John said and dang if I couldn't reduce my SB temps from 81c in BIOS to 68c just by pushing on the heat pipe cooling solution above the SB chip. I had already re-TIM'ed the mosfets, SB, and NB chips. Someone should write this up and get it stickied...13c improvement just by shaving the foam around the SB cooler. Remarkable...

nope i have a striker II formula too and im waiting for the ek solution, tried a mcw30 and the mount is too short, there probably a block out there that could be retro fitted to work but its not the same as the 680i thats for sure.

if i had access to a cnc i would have a block for it in a heartbeat. i already have drawings, just waiting for other before sharing :)

I bet when you trim the foam surrounds down you MCP temps will drop down to around
45C or so...assuming 1.50V MCP volts which is all ya need. That is what my MCP ran
after I did the foam trim and remount thing with the stock cooler and before I yanked
it off completely.

I don't have the patience to "trim" the foam. What I do is remove it and put some kapton tape instead.

If for some bizarre reason the hs tilts, it won't short the SMCs. Of course, if your stock heat pipes are exerting excessive torsional force on the hs, you should carefully correct their positions first.

The whole point of the foam is to free the assembly line of these considerations. We put foam around the chip and that way we ensure that it won't short or tilt. If the contact is less than ideal, tough.

There are no internal picture because there isn't much to see. The SPP only dissipates 20w
and the NF200 about 7-8w so you only need a wetted plate (1.9 Sq In wet area in my WB)
to cool the crap out of them. Swiftech MCW30 is another example of simple wetted plate).

My 780iWB has bi- directional, asymmetrical flow so more water is directed toward the SPP
die and less toward the NF200 die with less in block flow restriction than a .400 ID hi-flow
hose barb.

It is 3.100" long a 2.280" wide which is as small as I could make it and pickup all four mounting
hole and the SPP/NF200 chip dies.

You do not need WC on the 780i MCP. An EverCool EC-VC-RE cooler (available for $8.95
at SVC.com) will hold the MCP to about 40C which more than good for that chip.

WC on the Vcore mosfets is even more pointless than it is on the MCP. It does look cool
though.

You might be right...then I should be able to hold my mosfets, SPP/NF200 and MCH to 2c above room ambient. This is just the thing I need when doing extreme benching with LN2 or Dry Ice or my cascade.

My Viper NB Block and Mosfet Heatsinks finally arrived :up: . This is really a nice piece of work. Unfortunately, my better half had the digital camera today so I couldn't take pictures of it. I won't get a chance to install it until Tuesday, then I will take pictures and mount it to the motherboard. I will also lap my Evercool EC-VC-RE and mount that as well. Now if I can just finish modding my case, I'll be able to fire this bad boy up !!!!

I am 100% satisfied with this block. Everything was machined well and the block surface was true. Instead of using the evercool fan, which I had on my old 680, I found a great use for my EK680iNB block. If you use the mounting hardware backwards (brass thumbnut on the bottom of MB) the NB block fits very nicely on the SB. It is a tight fit but if you use zip ties you're all good, but forget about a clamp, way too tight. My MCP is happy at 21C as I type this. Going to do some benches later to see if the Viper block can help with a higher/stable OC on the 9650.

From your signature it looks like you're using the EK NF4 Rev 1.1 on the SB. How about a picture showing the clearance with your video cards. Will it be worth $35 to put a waterblock on the SB? Did you try to install the other mosfet waterblock?

I tell ya there is really no need to WC the MCP southbridge...unless you already have the WB.
The EverCool handles the MCP great plus it is cheap (althought they seem to dig you on the
shipping 1/2 the time though!).

Yes Petra's is selling the my 780i mosfet heatsinks. There are no plans for them to sell my
water block at this time though. That is mostly due to the fact I am giving everyone the
wholesale price for it and that doesn't leave room for me to sell the water block to Petra's at
a lower price which they can mark it up and make a profit on.

If you want a Viper 780i SPP/NF200 water block I suggest you get your order in for a kit from
batch 5 that will be shipping March 10th and 11th. I am making that a 15 kit batch instead
of the normal 10. I still have a 2 or 3 spots open for a kit from batch 5. After I finish making
all the parts for that batch I will be taking a short break to let the cuts and nicks my fingers
heal up as they are getting mighty dang sore!!!

You do tighten the water blocks mounting screws firmly. You just do not need to "killer" tighten
them lol.

The mount is a precision spaced, spring less hard mount in the same manner as Intel's retail box
coolers are (or Swiftechs MCW30). The SPP and NF200 chip die surface stands .094" above the
motherboard surface. The spacers supplied with the water block stand the heat sink base .084"
above the motherboard surface when the mounting screws are tightened. That gives a .010" MB
compression flex/bow and a solid mount which is industry standard (except for Intels CPU coolers
which flex/bow the motherboard a hell of a lot more).

I am surprised you can even see the slight MB bow.

I believe it was because I tightened the screws town alittle too much at first, but after I loosened them and re-tightened until they were just tight enough, the bow was barely noticeable. BTW, I just wanna compliment you on the mosfet sinks, the single row sinks mesh perfectly with all the mosfets thanks to your slight bow and to top it off they look great too. Before my aftermarket 60mm fan on the frankencooler was the loudest thing, now my enzotech SLF-1 is the loudest thing, though turning the fan speed down does help. Thanks again John.

That Crown I put n the single row mosfet heat sink is just an approximate compensation for the bow the MB's take in that area when a CPU cooler is mounted. The clamp pressure the CPU cooler you use applies to the CPU, if you are using a backplate or not, etc, etc all effect how much the motherboard bows in that mosfet area of the motherboard.

Sometimes the crown I put in the base makes for a perfect fit and sometimes not. The installer can alway increase the crown in the heatsink base if needed although that is easier said than done. The thermal compounds I recommend in the instructions will fill any small gaps that do exist if the fit is not dead nuts perfect.

In any case the mating of my single row heat sink with the mosfets underneath it will be better than the stock, flat, thin base unit the motherboard comes with stock. Most of the time there is no contact at all between inner mosfet and the stock thermal pad used with the stock mosfet strip heatsink.

John, do you mind me posting up pics of the inside of the block? I know its a flat plate but I still want to see :) and I am sure others do as well.

also are the little foam dots for something?

I'll have my review/pics up this weekend when the work load is a little less and me and my P5k-deluxe (P35) have a good-bye TF2 session :)

the foam dots are for the SB when you use an aftermarket cooler, since there are only 2 holes,t he foam helps stabilize the cooler

The use of the foam stabilizer pads was covered in the MCP Foam Stab Pads.jpg that
was attached to your instructions...unless the attachment pictures were stripped out of
the email I sent you.

Thanks John. The mailman delivered my Viper WB kit this afternoon. The installation went as good as I would expect considering I don't have any friends that were willing to loan me their fingers.

I do have other problems that will delay getting back up and running. I was hooking up my fans making sure they were running but the PSU kept stopping. I finally figured out that one of my (x) radiator fans was the culprit.

That won't keep me from installing the tubing and bleeding the system once I get some feelings back in my fingers!

Yeah it really helps to have three hands. I do the installs by myself as well and have
gotten used to doing it that way.

Reservoir fan??? That is a new one on me lol.

The first thing I noticed was that fan made a couple of turns, stopped and then the PSU stopped. When I disconnected that fan the PSU and my other fans were all spinning. This is the first time that I've had any problems with my fans.

I meant radiator fan. I removed it from the radiator and it failed by itself.

No what I meant was I have never heard of putting a fan on the reservoir.

Probably not. Viper doesn't want you to break it open cause he laps the base to a flat shine. I did see a shot looking down through the barb though :)

No but there isn't much to see really except the flow channel detail in the Acetal top and
with that being all black I can't get that to show in a photo worth a damn.

The SPP and NF200 chip combined dissipate about 27w so they are ridiculously easy to cool
with simple water (the mount is a whole nother story though!).

That heat sink base is a wetted plate with 1.9 Sq. In. of wetted surface area. The Swiftech
MCW30 is another example of a wetted plate WB but with a lot less wetted surface area.

The water flows asymmetrically in two directions with more flow directed toward the SPP die
(roughly 70%) and less toward the NF200 die (roughly 30%).

The reason I ask users to not open the block up is because I fly cut and them lap the heat sink
base after I assemble the copper base and the Acetal top. This insure all distortion that sets
into the base when the screws are tightened is removed and the base end up flat and true. If
you open the WB up all that will be lost when you reassemble it.

Beside there really isn't all that much to see lol!

Normally no. The 780i SPP/BF200 WB is a special case though where you have to have a very
large copper base to be able pick up both chip dies with both of those die well off center of
the mounting hole pattern. Heck the NF200 die is completely outside the mounting hole pattern
and the base in cantilevered out over that die.

Well the mosfet heat sinks for the 680/780i will not work thats for sure. I can easily make mosfet
heat sink sets to fit a reference 790i no problem. I just need a reference 790i motherboard to get
the measurements from.

Who ever sends me one first to get the measurements from will get their heat sink set for free.
They just have to pay for the shipping.

Anyone using Koolance compression fittings with this block (or any other brand of compression fittings for that matter)? If so did you leave the stock recessed o-ring on plus the o-rings provided with the block?

The standard machining on the water block is not compatible with Koolance nozzles
or any hose barb the has a recessed o-ring in the hose barb itself. I can machine/
remachine so they can be used though.

That is correct. There is one exception that I know of. I do bore the ID's of the SwifTech hose barbs I install and they fall into the large bore, hi-flow class after doing so.
