Ok I've found a solution for Gigabyte HD3870 512MB DDR3 Qimonda.... System setup

VGA Gigabyte HD3870 512MB DDR3 Ultra-Durable vGPU + CoolerMod AiR
Default 780/1900Mhz @ 1000/2150Mhz
Intel 975xbx BadAxe 417Mhz fsb
Core2 Duo 6600 @ 3.8GHz Single
2x 2GB (4GB) Corsair 667Mhz @ 700Mhz

1 - Original Ver 70 locked bios 1.22V @ 1.34v 3D

maxed out at @859/2100Mhz (11800 Marks 3D06)

2 - Used a Sapphire 3850 512MB DDR3 Qimonda Bios

It wont change much, first of all this fix should not work for u as u have hynix memory, and for last the voltage is changed by a SMD resistor in the back of the card, not by capacitors... but u can get a small increment maybe.

I'm aware of the Hynix memory, and the SMD is probably the same on both cards.
Voltage command is given from bios btw, and that can be modded.
The bigger capacitor will allow for more power delivered, and I prefer to go with the design Gigabyte has decided.

Anyway, I'm grateful if you could just open the side panel and scribble down those values for me...it would really be helpful:)

how much MHz could u reach already?

Your card has a locked bios, and for a while there is no way to pass 860Mhz wall, since ther is no unlocked bios for hynix 1.4ns yet... but if your best attempt is way lower then 860Mhz then u can get some extra performance increasing voltage in your original bios using the editor...

I'm telling that cause I coudn't get any extra Mhz increasing VGPU from 1.3V to 1.38V using original bios cause my limiting factor was the locked bios, I could reach 860Mhz before.

As of today I've reached 780MHz on the GPU unmodded.
I will do a combination of both my own bios and a hardmod.

Now, could you please look at those values for me, they are written on the capacitors that are marked with red squares in the picture I posted.:up:

Have you cooled any of the voltage components on the card? I will definitely try this mod when I get an Accelero S1 rev 2 and will make sure to cool everything I can.

Is 900Mhz the upper limit of what you can achieve with the stock cooler? Do you think you could go higher with a better one?

I am going to email Gigabyte to see if they can release an unlocked BIOS for the card so we can OC without voiding the warranty. Hopefully, they will work on it, as they have released an 8800GT with overvolting capabilities etc.

That was the top to reach using pencilmod at 1.42V I'm going to harmod it now..

I flashed my 3870 w/ 3850 BIOS, edited clock to 780/950 and I got now 1,339V in 2D and 1,381V in 3D:D

Real clocks are correct, set by BIOS 780/950, but GPU-Z and ATiTool shows def 670/830. When I click "Default" on ATiTool, then clocks drop to 670/830, but after bootup they are again 780/950 :rolleyes:

i have a GeCube HD3850 512mb, and it OCs quite well, i was thinking.. would it be possible for me to flash it to a 3870?? I dont think my card can take some of the 3870 oc BIOS, or is there a way for me to set my own clock speed in the bios?

Hi MadCow, welcome to XS.

Look in this thread for the Bios editor http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=175531. This will allow you to set your own clocks and voltages to a point. On my Sapphire 3850, the actual voltage would not go up over 1.241 volts (stock is 1.214) no matter how high I set it. Depending on how high you want to go with your clocks, you may need to do a VoltMod on your card http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=166623

Nope, the only bios for 3870 w/ DDR3 comes from mine gigabyte ultra durable and it is locked, that's why i changed it to an 3850 bios..

check out if yours is version 71 or higher then u don't need to change it, just save your own bios using ATi Winflash and edit w/ Computerbase bios editor to get max voltage avaible...

when you say locked bios, are you referring to the HD38x0 bios which doesnt OC past 860mhz? If thats the case, then dont worry, beacuse im not intending on clocking my card to that kind of speed. Right now im running 750/950 @ 39c with two 120mm fans blowing at the card. The card OCs to 800/1003 which is the max that ive done, im not planning on raising too much voltage so that locked BIOS does not really trouble me.

Having said that, is it safe for me to flash my card(gecube) to a gigabyte 3870 bios?

How bad would it be to flash my hynix equipped gigabyte HD 3850 with that Sapphire 3850 512MB DDR3 Qimonda Bios given in the first post.
And would I be able to recover from bad flash with vnc from another pc?

If you first modified that bios to a lower clock on the memory it might just work, I've seen stranger things than that.:D
The voltage given is the same on both chips, so it will not burn for you.

Even if you get black screen you will most certainly be able to flash it back to original bios using another card.:up:

Overdrive wont work because 780/950 is way pasted the HD3850's normal speed range.

ATI Overdrive only detects up to 735/950, you will need to flash it to 3870 to detect the OCed speed.

What about checksums. I mean, would it work if i just download and flash it, or i have to modify its checksum to make it work?

Nah, checksum on that bios is ok I believe.
You need only to worry about cheksum when you start hex'ing the bios yourself.

The ATI 38xx BIOS editor will adjust for checksum for you as well, so if you edit clocks with that you need not to worry.:up:

I assume the chips don't even get very hot?

Now, if you give the mems 2v or so you will see perhaps 1050MHz-1100Mhz I believe.
The Hynix 1.0ns version of the exact same chip is running at 2.05v...so it's even specced for it. (max rated voltage is 2.15v for this chip)

Hynix have simply binned down a better chip due to demand from producers with lower budget cards in mind.

What i voltage given to GPU now, and what is your max clocks?

I tried the bios now and it result in black screen, thx I have an ATi Rage PCI to rescue me....

well I've edited to 900Mhz in mem only, and will try again later.

Everything is pink now, even when I use the monitor with my laptop...haha!
It seems like the monitor got a "pink virus" from the card..who knows?:ROTF:

All is solved!:up:

Pink color was from bad VGA cable, Riva tuner don't like 2003 OS.

After voltmod I get:

1.27v gives 871MHz
1.35v gives 931MHz

all under a modified NV Silencer 5, load temp stays under 58C ;)

Same as mine, it did 930Mhz for 3D06 loop using 1.38v but ceemic has a bigger cooler...

P.S. > Don't try latest ver 76 bios, I got blank using that @780/900Mhz

To get recovered use a USB cell-phone and a PCI card (for those who don't have a floppy)

Rev. A12 R670 is coming and it should bring some extra clock

Yup, ATI tool stable.:D
It's pretty obvious Gigabyte aint binning the cores, they only slap the Hynix mems on there (actually downbinned 1.0ns chips :)) and change a few caps to lower the costs, this is a classic product differentiation to meet the market.
I had a hunch about this when I saw that the Ultra Durable design was the same on both 3850 and 3870.

I get a little bit lower stable clocks on the memory with this bios than with the original one...a 2.0v mod on the memory should solve that.
They do not run hot at all @ 950MHz, barely warm actually..so I'm pretty confident they will perform as 1.0ns versions when given their rated voltage.
I'm going to grab a couple of trim pots and do some proper mods instead of pencilmods next weekend.

In my opinion 3D06 is crap, too much weight on CPU....benching gfx should only be about benching gfx.

I decided to edit my Gigas ORIGINAL BIOS and changed the GPU clock to 880! (limit is ~86x)

Right, I now have an Accelero S1 rev2 on my card and it is begging to be overclocked further (850/1000Mhz currently). I have emailed Gigabyte asking for an unlocked BIOS and one that gives 1.3V in 3d mode, but haven't heard back, so I may go with the unlocked Sapphire 3850 one unless anyone has a better ideas?

Not sure about the above, but my card won't allow me to flash to the Sapphire 3850 BIOS. I am also getting some Powerplay issues, where the card will drop down to the 2d clocks for a tiny period of time, which causes stuttering in Trackmania. It's a pain.

Is there any unlocked bios out there who is for samsung mems ?
Or can i flash with a gigabyte that dont say qimonda memory ?

I just hate them! Still having to use an 3850 bios on my 3870, no way to use CCC and when I change memmory speed using the editor I've got some artifacts... so I need to overclock it manualy everytime i wanna play...

Is it just me or is trackmania really easy to crash when overclocked. Stable for absolutely everything else but as soon as I play trackmania for 15 mins or so it crashes. Have resorted to getting rid of any overclock when I want to play. :shrug:

Maybe its because it keeps downclocking or something if it wasn't stressing the card enough, I'll have to monitor it with rivatuner or something next time I play. Or whack AA/AF to their max and see if it still does it.

I just can't believe that nobody found a way to fix the 860Mhz barrier without changing bios yet...

Don't edit memmory frequency using the compbase bios editor cause it might result in artifacts...

Trackmania United is 100% stable for me. They only game that I am having trouble with in terms of stability is STALKER, but I am not sure if that is CPU/memory related or my graphics card.

The 8.3 hotfix driver solves Powerplay issues, which makes Trackmania playable, but I'm still not 100% happy with the performance of my 3870 @ 850/2050Mhz. It's not a big improvement over my old card, a x1950xtx.

Gigabyte refuse to supply me with a BIOS to unlock the card, which is bloody annoying. I wish they would, as I feel there is a lot more potential in my card.

No, none so far. Gigabyte flat out refuse to do anything about the clock lock. It's disappointing for a company that specifically designed their own card, rather than just using the reference design.

ok, There is a new board in the market.... 3870 PowerColor... using 512MB DDR3 we only need to know where to find it bios, if it got qimonda chips and if it is version newer then .71

I used the Gigabyte flashing programme located here.

The BIOS source version is the same as the F1 BIOS I was running (010.700.000.003). I'm not sure if it will have added any other features or removed the clock lock limit, but it does mention some changed memory timings. Not sure if these are for better or worse yet!

The new BIOS didn't change anything for me. Highest stable clocks are 850/1025Mhz. Will load it up in RBE and have a play around to see if I can get any better results.

/Edit/ I raised the 3D voltage settings for the BIOS in RBE to 1.25 from 1.21, but still get a black screen when trying to overclock past 865Mhz. Obviously the BIOS lock on clock speeds is still there!
