Some QX9650 results with MSI P35D3 Platinum, STT DDR3 1600 and 2-Stage Cascade

So, I've received this motherboard along with 4x1GB of DDR3 from one of our hardware distributors.

First of all, I've tried the combo under Grosse Bertha 3-stager but something's gone weird under lets say -120C and at -130C saving bios parameters became very difficult. Also, I was require to turn off 3rd stage each time I needed to reboot. I think there is a motherboard cold-boot at about -120C. It happened once under the smaller unit.

Nevermind, I'll try it again, but to gather preliminary stuff, I've used the Petite Bertha 2-Stager ("Petite" because R1150 evaporating pressure during benching time is 'only' ~0.49bar which means about -115C :rolleyes: )

Here are the results.

As you can see the performance isn't very good... Bandwidth is too low. I've tried to improve it in looking into the MCHBAR and succeeded. But not enough, something else is needed.

Despite of the crappy bandwidth, this board isn't too bad; I mean, Vcore can be set up to 2.01V bios (Vdroop is awful anyway; the need for a mod is critical); and memory stability is pretty good even with 4x1GB.

Looks good, but sad about the vdroop, and like your also says, seems to scale okay with 4x1gb.

How much vdroop is there?.

Vdroop depends on Vcore; the higher the Vcore, the higher the Vdroop... 1.92V Bios corresponds to 1.81V during Spi 32M.

I'll do some work on the 2 stager to continue. I think I've found something to reduce the Vdroop.

I've calculated your Pi-product, its 46241, which is quite good with yorkie, close on the japanies guys at around 45500...

I have to ask you... maxmem=4096, thats should be the exact same effect as not setting an max mem? How comes you've configurated it?

Your sticks are D9GTR, right? Any chance of getting GTS?? It'll sure aid your result, however, not a bad word about your sticks, seems very equal to the ones I use..... Havnt got a yorkie tho'

Yes, DDR3 benefits quite a bit, I belive its around 2000-3500 in average Pi product...

In 32M DDR3 is quite faster than DDR2, in 1M not and definitly not 2000-3000 in PP. I've seen a lot of people hit 45k performance product with DDR2 and these were not übertweakers :)

Thank you buddy. May be you're right, but I find these scores to be kinda slow because of the motherboard bandwidth (or problem to deal with Yorky L2 cache). :)

Dunno if it helps or not; just testing. Looks like what OPB and those who tried his CDT method wanted to do. So maxmem can do it way better. I think it's working while you try to force windows to use more memory than what it can do.

About the chips used for the memory modules; I've got no clue.. :p: .

Nice cpu before and also nice benches as always... :toast:

Im still having lots of problem with mine running her on the DFI P35, very similar to what you went through using the P5B... but so far its looking good with -125c coldboot and ~ 145c coldbug at idle...

Should have clicked one more time in setfsb lol....

Still playing. :)

Results aren't fast as they're supposed to be. Memory read bandwidth seems me a bit low. I can't figure out what to do in order to improve it. :confused: Also, dunno if that's revealant or not, but Everest is unable to run L2 cache. May be, there's a matter with the board and its 45nm support.

Do you ever check how much the temp rises during load from idle? My temp just shoots up quite a bit even with 1M, way more than it did with C2D.... Not sure if thats just the quads are or I got a bad mount, worst yet maybe my container suck.....

Evap pressure of the R1150 is set to about 0.55bar which corresponds to -113C, no matter the load thx to the CPEV. In fact, it only varies within 0.5 to 0.6bar (-115C to -112C).

Vdroop is a real problem even with 2 cores. That MSI allows for very high bios settings (up to 2.01v), but loaded Vcore is about 0.1v less. A Vdroop mod is needed. :) Also, the board won't boot under 3 stage cascade under lets say -130C. BTW the chip is also out of breath at this level of temperature. I think -115C to -120C is the best interval.

I didn't try the cascade on hard 3D benching with 4 cores enable, but will do it next week. :D

Yeah; a bit too cold sometimes. 0.4bar, i.e. -118C is too cold to boot. Pressure is usually within 0.6 to 0.8bar (-112C to -107.5C) during 3D load.

Thx ;) In fact, the board clocks very high in a very smooth way. I've to figure out what to do in order to improve that crappy bandwidth and then I'm sure it can be a nice piece of hardware.

BTW, I've just figured out the MSI P35D3 Vmch mod and started using it. Dunno but I may be able to catch the bandwidth deficit with more volts on the NB. In fact, 1.65V (the max available) set by the bios was 1.57V actual... that's a bit low, isn't it? :)

OMG!! The Vmch mod gives da trick!! 596FSB on water with my E6700 L633A :D I've never got better than 592FSB IIRC correctly, on a DFI LP P35...

I've set the Vmch to 1.776v and managed to get a CPU-Z validation at 593FSB under watercooling. (596FSB validation failed...)

That's the highest FSB I've ever reached with this CPU under standard cooling conditions; none of the following boards did better: Asus P5B, Asus P5K, Gigabyte X38-DS5 and DFI LP-UT P35.

Finnally got the trick to use the 3 stager without making the chip running out of breath.

Time is awful!! :( F**cking low bandwidth. BTW I may have figured out a way to improve it. Will see tomorrow. :D

Found something interesting on this board... :rolleyes:

Started with a boot @460FSBx11 to perfrom Everest benchmarks and then rebooted @450FSBx11; and so on; down to 380FSBx11. Last boot was done @399FSBx11, and system was overclocked with setFSB under windows up to 440FSBx11. (Available) Timings were the same, divider remained unchanged; I've just played with PL but results are given individually.

It looks to work only with FSBSEL jumpers set to 333. :)

A boot at 399FSB shown to be far more efficient than anyothers. Memory Read, Copy and Latency appeared significantly improved (even with PL8).

I've got tons of things to do; so I didn't had the time to bench more on this board. BTW; I've added a second solid aluminium capacitor to the vFSB area; and made some investigations on MCHBAR coding.

So; the memory bandwidth/latency is definitely better while booting at 399FSB with FSBSEL jumpers set to 333 strap. Of course, this setting also adds more stress on the MCH, and obviously varies with CPU multipliers. That's odd indeed.

In fact, stability is quite good with 10x multiplier, but becomes bad with 13x multiplier using the exact same bios settings... Why? ;)

I've made registers dumps to perform comparisons. Here are the differences (quite a lot for only a multiplier difference :rolleyes: )

I'll not come to details, but the first one which shines on my eyes is offset MCH+24A (FED1424Ah). Just check line starting with 24A. In fact, as you can see offset 24A = C6 with CPU multiplier 13x, and = C7 with CPU multiplier 10x. What does that mean? :confused:

So, let me tell you. AFAIK this particular offset is where the CAS Latency (tCL) timing is hard-codded for memory Channel #0. It's a Read/Only 8bits value which requires electrical reboot to be changed. Basically, C0 = tCL1, C1 = tCL2, C2 = tCL3, etc. to C6 = tCL7 and C7 = tCL8. So, as can be seen tCL for channel #0 is 8 while booting at 399FSBx10 but 7 while booting at 399FSBx13. That's odd; knowing that I set tCL to 7 in the bios... :p:

Then, I've tried to boot at 399FSBx13 with tCL set to 8 in the bios; and the system became stable :yepp: 24A offset was correctly set to C7, just like while booting at 399FSBx10 with tCL set to 7 in the bios.

Guess there's a matter of bios coding here.

BTW dunno why, but LargeSystemCache (LSC) = 1 causes unstability again. :ROTF: The memory controller might be out of breath. What's interesting to note is that Spi32M can pass successfully with multiplier 13x and LSC=1 if I don't boot at 399FSB. It looks like something related to MCH data transfer limitation. I'll try with more Vmch; but I don't really like it. Actual tests were performed with 1.75Vmch (DMM).
