!!FOUND: Source of G3/8 BSP 1/2" ID metal thermochill barbs & shroud!!

I've finally found a source of REAL G3/8" threaded 1/2" ID brass barbs that fit the thermochill PA120.x rads!! No, these do not use an adapter and they are not the small ones that are being sold on NCIX.

I wish Thermochill would just sort it out and make it G1/4" instead of using their stupid 3/8" BSP size. It is only making it more hassle for us consumers and more than likely losing Thermochill a few customers.

I prefer the 3/8" thread.. I just wish everyone else would switch to it, as my local plummer has loads of different stuff for 3/8" :p

Finding fittings for 1/4" BSPP is as easy as it is to find them for 3/8" BSPP.

Still, there's people that insist on buying Pizzas in Amazon. Or ice skating uphill.

There's plumbing shops, chandlers, pneumatic/hydraulic equipment suppliers... probably your local brothel stocks fittings as well...

It only makes more hassle for those who'd rather NOT use their brains.

2. I have the small barbs from NCIX right here sitting on my desk. Just by comparing them to the pictures on GAM, you can easily tell the shaft is wider on the ones pictured at gam (based on how far a point on the circumference of the shaft is from a point on the perimeter of the hex nut that is perpendicular to a tangent drawn on the original point on the circumference of the shaft).

No worries. Unless the pictures are wrong, these are the real deal.

Naw M8 I think you will be sorely disappointed.

Unless you physically are in possession of them and have measured them I would seriously doubt they are different.

Marci stated that Thermochill gets them made for them from a distr in UK: If these barbs are from Thermochill I would have to think they are the same as the ones I got from NCIX.

Not willing to spend $30 to find out either...

I did order them. The shipping wasn't a problem, because I was ordering the PA120.3 shroud as well, so it would have been the same without them.

I will of course let you guys know the results of this, but I can say 100% conclusively that they are not the same barb based on the picture at GAM alone.

If you will notice, where the shaft is affixed to the hex nut, there is a very noticeable slope. On the ones from NCIX, it is just a straight 90 degree angle. Also the shaft is noticeably shorter.

Other than the 2 extra ribbings on the shaft, linear slant where the shaft is connected to the hex nut, longer threading, and lack of an o-ring the shaft looks exactly like the ones from NCIX.

And there is more. NCIX has stocked them since well before september. Gam just got a new shipment of thermochill parts on 11/29, and since there were 20 of these barbs in stock when I ordered (now 18), I would be willing to bet they just had gotten their stock replenished. Thermochill could have by this point very easily had their barb manufacturer make the barbs bigger.

7/16 would be a snug fit on the NCIX barbs and an almost impossible fit over a real 1/2" barb without first stretching the tubing.

btw I don't even know NCIX for that matter... here in the Netherlands I order other barbs from a local store, 3/8 thread with 14mm OD... my 7/16 tygon fits snugly around that...

That is a BSPT ("R") fitting, not BSPP ("G"). It would be wise not to mix them with each other during assembly

You think so huh? I bet if you were to go into any ACE across the country and asked for a BSPP("G") fitting, they'd look at you funny and say "sorry, we don't stock that, but we have a wide selection of NPT". There just isn't enough money to be made on metric fittings for States side hardware stores to carry them in stock. I have Home Depot, Lowes, True Value, ACE, and Valu in my area and can't find a metric fitting at any of them. Heck, even Mcmaster carries a very limited selection of metric fittings, and that place is huge.

Eddy has just added to his shop some G3/8" barbs for 1/2" tubing. Perfect for thermochill rads.

I've been suggesting the US guys try getting them from GAM for a while now. He doesn't have a 6" cube box as his minimum, like some US online shops. So post could be quite reasonable to the US.

I just recieved my NCIX barbs. I was kinda upset I had to order them from Canada and they would not even take my credit card and I had to have a friend order...

Oh yea I found this Au link online before I ordered but I may as well order them from the moon. Thats about as far away as I could have possibly orded them from lol.

I did not measure with a caliper (don't have one) but my plastic NPT barbs are 6/16ths of an inch ID at the barb end, and the NCIX ones are 5/16ths of an inch (roughly no calipers).

How much will 1/16th of an inch really affect performance? I'm using 7/16th inch Masterclear tubing and hose clamps so I should be able to get a decent enough seal over them. more worried about restriction in the loop.

I already blew $25 on these barbs and I don't really want to spend anymore money. I mean paying $50 or more for more barbs is a bit ridiculous I could have just purchased a second swiftech radiator and crammed it in there. I like the design of the thermochill but when you start getting nickled and dimed on barbs I can't really recomend them as a practical radiator...

Great to hear, this does give me confidence, because I can easily apply and remove 7/16" ID tubing to the NCIX barbs by hand, and without any heat. :clap:

$5.95 AU is just under $10US for a pair. Email GAM for postage cost. I think it'll be a pleasant surprise. Last pair he sent to me was in a padded envelope, very small.

Ill keep it in mind if my $25 NCIX barbs don't work out, but for $25 I think I should try them first...I bought 4 I have 2 thermochills (although one is sitting on the desk)

Who's freaking idea was it to use G 1/4 barbs on the MCR320's??

Ya the ones I picked up from NCIX about a month ago where too small for 1/2" tubing. Using some worm clamps sealed it, but still I would like it to be a tight fit. I am just hoping they get some more from another manufacturer.

What ones?

I'm grabbing the D-Tek 1/2" OD high-flow. Using 7/16 ID tubing on them though.

To further back up my statement, ACE Hardware doesn't even list NPSM (American straight thread fittings) or BSPP ("G") fittings on their website.


STEvil, MCR's are actually NPSM threads. NPSM and BSPP ("G") are compatible to a point. I believe if the threads were somewhere around 7/16"-1/2" long is when it would start to become incompatible.

G 1/4 threads on MCR320's now. They changed a while back apparently.

Yes, that's what I wanted to suggest when I said that this fittings appeared on Eddys Shop, probably the solution for us TC rads users, not only in the US, also here in Spain (EU) it´s hard to find proper (watercooling target) G3/8 fittings. They just appeared on EK yesterday, so perhaps it will take some time to be esle where.

too late for me, but maybe I will pickup a set to install next rebuild if I can get them for a decent price.

Also all of the advertised barbs are G 1/4 none are NPSM 1/4. I also tried NPSM 1/4 barbs yesterday while searching for barbs and none would fit quite properly.

I'm looking at the TC G3/8 1/2" barbs and Swiftech 1/2" T-piece here and there's something strange going on with the NCIX barbs.
This TC barb is a match for the T-piece end. No way it fits inside like that pic and no way 1/2" tygon is loose on it.
They are really quite nice barbs. Have a good o-ring land and clean threads etc.

Yep, the previous version the MCR QP rads had 3/8" NPT, they then switched to NPSM 1/4". Many sites still say 3/8" NPT like FrozenCPU, P-PCs, Sidewinder, SVC.

The only ones that actually have it right are Petra http://www.petrastechshop.com/swmcqposerab1.html

As for NPSM fittings, the only ones I'm aware of are these from Swiftech (go figure :rolleyes:). This is a link to a somewhat obscure page of Swiftech's site about threads. http://www.swiftnets.com/products/NPT-NPSM.htm. Like they say, the threads are short enough on the BSPP fittings that they will indeed work, it's all one big happy coincidence(?:para:).

If they used 1/4" NPSM on their Apogee (that's actually the original version they're talking about), it only stands to reason that all their products would have the same thread for uniformity.

Yeah, I'm hoping the EK g3/8 barbs are the same style as his regular barbs. Tubing goes over them very easily.

The manufacturer does! You guys are just getting screwed over by a local distributor. DD can bring in TC barbs any time they feel like it.

I've fixed what I believe is the last reference to any 3/8 thread type in the MCR320 product description. Most of them already said G1/4 compatible.

Linus, the tap used to make the threads in the MCR "hubs" is a NPSM 1/4". It's merely a coincidence that G1/4" happen to fit. It would be nice, if your site (and all the others), reflected the truth.

It's a 3/8-19(BSPT) to 3/8-18(NPT) nipple. Go to your local brothel, get a 3/8 NPT female to 1/2" hose barb (or whatever size you need) and life is good...

There are more suppliers of fittings than McMaster-Carr in the US, just look around a bit ;)

There is a link to the catalog page on there that will show you all kinds of interesting metric to American adapters and they are quite a bit cheaper than most other places I've seen...enjoy

Why pull hair to get a adapter to NPT then NPT nipple if it's simpler to order a 3/8" BSPP to 1/4" BSPP adapter then use any G1/4" barbs which is the standard ? McMaster sell them under 4860K657 ;)

There are many ways to get from fitting size A to hose size B....I was simply offering an alternative, since this thread seemed to be discussing different adapters and where to get them and such. Additional options are always a good thing IMHO ;)

Has anyone tried just tapping the ports on a TC rad? To either 3/8-18 or even 7/16?
