Phenom doesn't support DDR2-1066?

The admin at MSI HQ forum says Phenom does not support DDR2-1066 and everyone is wrong who says it does.

It's pretty fuinny and stupid at times. Bas (admin) pointed out something I overlooked.

So only SPD programmed DDR2-1066 is supported and not until JEDEC spec is finalized?

I'm not in the best of moods honestly. Someone clarify this for me before I end up selling my chip or my board or both. :mad:

It was my understanding that AM3 chipsets (like the AMD RS780) will have 'official' DDR2 1066MHz support due to the JEDEC standard. It will also support DDR3 1333MHz.

KTE as far as i know there is no JDEC standard for 1066

so it is normal that you run the 1066 on SPD settings. To my opinion that is exactly the same on any nvidia and intel chipset.

now you are stating that you are unable to get it running on MSI but you can on dfi/gigabyte?

RD 790 chipset supports DDR2-1066 perfectly.
MSI Platinum cannot run 1:2.66 divider which gives DDR2-1066 at stock HT ref for Phenom.
Gigabyte boards run 1:2.66 divider fine with RAM that is not SPD DDR2-1066 prigrammed, so you get DDR2-1066 at stock.

Crucail Ballistix Tracer that I have are not SPD programmed 1066 but EPP 1066 (attached). Like most people.

I would understand the info as this: The MSI board don't support 1066mhz...

The gigabyte board does, I ran @ 1066 with 2 sticks of 8500 ballistixs ... till I added 2 more and it stepped down to 800

KTE is right. There is no JDEC standard for 1066 PC-8500. However, you will notice that Phenom and 790FX support the EPP (Enhanced Performance profile).

If you have your DRAM sticks in the correct slots on your motherboard for *Unganged Dual Channel Mode and set your bios to Optimal, it will default to 1066 Mhz SPD. My Gigabyte MA790FX-DS5 does. Since Bios F2. I will post a screen later if you request.

*see my thread on Gigabyte MA790FX-DS5 about the dual channel slots. Gigabyte's mobo manual is incorrect, you have to have the DIMM sticks in both the same color slots. not 1 orange, 1 yellow. but both Orange or Both yellow. The bios would always default to 667 Mhz SPD on auto, UNTIL I did this.

Officially the CPU supports the 1066 mode with the true-1066SPD DIMMs (and at 1.8V +-100mV). the MSI board works fine @1066 if a 1066SPD module is used.

there will be a BIOS fix to allow 800SPD modules to be manually adjusted to 1066Memclk mode. this is not guaranteed to work and usually requires using higher than spec Memory voltage. So its an Overclocking option.

there are some 800SPD / 1066rated @ 1.8V DIMMs out there though ;)

and yes, certain board makers have the manual 1066 mode working already.

I understand your frustration having bought the Plat MB and DDR2-1066 RAM but it's early days and these technicalities will cause head-aches. Hang in there, once people start using Phenom (there are not that many with MSI yet - mine is still in the box) there are talented BIOS tweakers around like SideEffect who may help us out one day.

The guy nicked Bas (admin) there sent me a PM full of personal abuse out of the blue when we proved him wrong here in this thread and after he abused posters here he banned me. First time I've been banned but I don't care becaue he's a "Chief moron" as he perfectly recognized himself.

I was trying to help other users like here because I'm more familar with how Phenom runs on this board and can explain and test rigorously. So much for "user to user" forum. :rolleyes:

I'm sure with time there will be better developments. The board is very good otherwise, the design and layout is fab.

I got the MSI for the 4PCIE slots and teh 1066. I clearly saw online that 1066 was an avilalbe mem divider. Something that wasn't present in the nv590. When I popped in my memory and didn't see the 1066, I was a bit frustrated.

Hopefully they will get this fixed w/ a new bios.

The divider is there. It's just not working - can't boot no matter what the mem settings are. Though I've been using an Opty and on Gigabyte DS5 board with F1 BIOS 1066 divider was not available at all. Maybe opterons do not support 1066 :shrug:

everyone listen very closely.

If you are unable to run at 1066 on your 790FX chipset, WITH a phenom processor, try putting your DIMM sticks in the same color slots. this seems to be affecting more boards and I am finding out.

Try this, then tell me if it works or not.

I am making a list of motherboards that this is affecting.

I am not going to hate on MSI for this one mod and crikey, that is lame. :down: Unfortunately, that is a user to user forum so you aren't speaking with folks who work for MSI.

specs are below.. memory's only running at 6400
2x2gb crucial kits.. paired modules in the same color slots on my Asus M3A board.. gone into bios and manually set it.. boot into windows.. back to 800.. check the bios.. still set for 1066..

I feel your pain KTE(about the MSI forum).I was in the same place 1 year ago,looking support for one MSI Neo board.They not only showed rude behaviour for simple disagreeing ,but banned me and a few other posters.I had the link for the thread,but i lost it after last format of my drive.All in all,that Bas dude is prime example of person who shouldn't be an admin.But he is,and that's too bad.In his eyes,it just can't be MSI's fault,just no way(even tho it is 100% their fault).

Yeah, I see what you are saying. It may be with just the Gigabyte 790FX boards that the colored slots are mis matched. And yes, my 1066 SLi Ready 2 GB Kit does have 533Mhz EPP SPD.

I only resorted to the forum because MSI UK transferred me to MSI technical support (tw) and they deleted my first query about Phenom when I asked why DDR2-1066 does not work.
I opened one again a weeka after and they deleted it again, no reply.

That is daft and just silly. This is the sad thing about technology. They couldn't have done that had I been standing right infront of them... or ;)

I did do bro, I mentioned it here earlier. ;) I could've picked it up a few days ago but it was failing bootup with Phenom installed and I only had 45 minutes to decide whether to take it or not. I chose to leave it (I'd have to drop MSI board off if I took it). After 45mins of messing it still had not booted up with Phenom and yet worked fine with X2.

This is my second one as it seems to be a running pattern with me and D.F.I Boards that the Second one is always the charm;) Don't have a clue as to why its just been that way since NF4:p:

Besides the 6400+ BE are about the same as the Phenom they don't O.C worth sh**t!

If things are better later and a higher multi Phenom is released (12x+) then I'll give the DFI another try. :)
I like the design of the board quite a bit and their BIOSes are usually fun to play with.

Does yours run DDR2-1066 with Phenom that you know of?

Sorry KTE but I am a starving white man and no sponsorship yet;) Maybe some day so for now I opted to focus in on the Power end of the Platform and spend the money on 2 3850 in XFIRE for review instead of Phenom which is riddled with issues until maybe B3 rev so I wanted to focus on strong points of new Platform and show how well cross fire scaled and gotta admit its kick ass and you will be quite impressed with the numbers when I post my Review;)

I can show you how to do a 1066spd, thats dead easy, the issue is the hex value to change to.

in EPP 1066 is 1E, im sure someone mentioned to me that 790fx bios needs to see 17....but this does not = 1066

So Sami...if you have time just drop me a line quoting which value is needed and I will help the guys out here and do up a test 1066spd for them to play with on their D9 modules ;)

Hmm, reading the K10 Dev Manual i found that register F3xE8 stores the max supported DRAM data rate in bits 7:5.

So i opened wpcredit walked to Dev#24 Func#3 and inspected those bits.
They are set to 100b here.

The mapping is as following:

000b unlimited
001b 1600 MT/s
010b 1333 MT/s
011b 1067 MT/s
100b 800 MT/s
101b 667 MT/s
110b 533 MT/s
111b 400 MT/s

So my 9500 is max capable of DDR2-800 ram, according to this.
