Where do we stand on phenom compatibility with AM2 and AM2+ boards?
One of AMD's biggest talk point was Phenoms drop in capability. I've got couple of rigs and do few of my friends.
I'm just wondering if that is still true.....

yep, all socket AM2 boards should be compatible.
At most, certain models may need a BIOS update.

Edited to Add: I do know the ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe is compatible straight out of the box
just upgraded the bios in my Gigabyte M55S-S3 am2 board. It's running flawlessly with a 9500 in there..
won't overclock though. Didn't expect much joy thogh as it was :banana::banana::banana::banana: for OCing K8 also.
I'm trying to run a 9500 in a Crosshair and am having my fair share of issues.
They are all bios related though.

Have Phenom support, but pressuably its more difficult to code so is most costly hense why support for cheaper bords is most likely to be non existant.
Even those above boards with new bios causes bad problems gone back to old bios for Crosshair as latest one reduce my game performence by half due to HT only X1 and few other little things.
Please explain Aussie FX. Can you boot at all?

It's just an immature bios that's the problem.

MSI K9N Platiunum & K9N SLI Platinum don't work, there's no beta bios for the phenom either... That's why I upgraded to a 790 FX mainboard
HI guys,
Ok I have a M2N32SLI-Deluxe mobo, and Phenom 9500...
I've flashed a M2n32sli-premium bios to it, and have managed to OC the Phenom to 3.0 GHz, but the HT issue is still a problem, and the BIOS is still a cause for problems....
The CPU Multu appears to be unlocked in the BIOS, and I've used this to OC it, but CPU-Z doesnt seem to work properly and Everest still displays the multi as stock but a higher CPU Freq.
Heres some screenshots of what I mean.... can someone please tell me if my CPU is multiplier unlocked upwards as it appears to be....!!!!!!

Ok so you can see what I mean about the whole multiplier thing right....!!!
Now the latest I got is 3013MHz bu using a x15 CPU Multiplier, which Everest tranlsates as a CPU FSB of 274MHz on a x11 CPU Multi.....

The eVGA (and possibly all reference) 590 sli boards are not going to support Phenom (or the 6400+ windsor) ever, officially from eVGA. All support of the board has been dropped it appears (you can't even download the drivers for it anymore :p:)...

The 1503-bios has some serious issues at performance department too.I had to downgrade to 1402 while using 5000+ BE.The difference was around 1000-1200 2006 3d Marks.Hopefully Asus will do something about it.Quote:

@Kazgirl: Believe bios is showing bs, and everest is showing the right values, ie htt speed of 274. If you set "cpu speed" (htt ref) in bios to auto, I'm sure its just you wanting/hoping for it to unlock itself :)

I'm getting some strange results with Everest such as photoworxx giving me 29429, but superpi is showing 35 seconds.
I'm sure Everest is wrong and cpuz is correct.

Then I started getting bsods, so I loosened ram timings from 4-4-3-12 to 5-5-5-15 and still no luck
The bsods started at 235HTT and now I'm getting them again at 225. Only stock speed is stable now, so I'm not sure what's going on.
This board/bios is very strange with Phenom right now. Even raising the voltage doesn't help.

Apoloies for the delay in replying, but I've been quite perplexed by this for a while....
After a bit more digging it seems its a BIOS problem, I posted the same details over at the AMD forums, and also did a bit more trying things, and theres even an example of a 5GHZ CPU speed where another user tried the same thing, using a x25 multi....
So all my dreams were shattered...!!! :sob:
I also came across a post where someone has used ntune to change the HT Multiplier which was another problem, and I tried this after re-setting the BIOS back to defaults.
It did seem to change my HT link to 1000MHz, but then another problem cropped up, random BSOD's "Clock interrupt request not received from secondary processor in allocated interval"
This was with a ntune OC to 210 x 11 = 2310MHz and 1050MHz HT Link
The BSOD initially happened after the 2nd CPU test in 3dmark06 had completed, but is now happening even when Vista idling with nothing running...
And another user has tried the same workaround and has the same BSOD problem.
So it seems as though its still a case of waiting for a better BIOS from ASUS... so I'm giving up on it for now and following Aussie's example and putting my 6400+ back in until either ASUS give a working BIOS, or I get a new mobo, whichever happens sooner....... :(
Hi kazgirl, if you follow my overclocking attempts last night, when I got to 235HTT I started getting that same BSOD. I was lowering the HTT incrementally but still kept getting it, even after previously successful overclocks. In the end I had to revert to stock speeds to get it to boot.Quote:

I had real trouble with my mobo and Phenom when I first installed it, that's why I went back to the 6400. I put the Phenom in last night when I saw your post, just to try to confirm what you were seeing. thanks for posting your results, it helps to know that the BSOD problem is a common problem, with mine I only got as high as 215 HTT, before it started happening, someone else has had it happen after installing FEAR, so I'm wondering if its a problem with processor synchronization, you know they had the dual core optimizer for the X2's to set the RTC, just wonder if maybe they need something similar for the X4's now as well.... seems that the BSOD message is pointing to a synchronization problem with a core, but could it be CPU Cores, NB Core, or GPU core, maybe this is where the whole NB>CPU thing is an issue.
Anyway, back to the 6400+ for me for a while.....at least then I can use my PC for something more than a pretty typewwriter.....:yepp:
Its' only about manufacturers support. Support code for Phenom is around 30KB, but some manufacturers filled their 4 MB BIOS chips full, and don't want to optimize... On the other hand all 8MB BIOS based mobos will work flawlessly... ofcourse, some manufacturers will manage to squeeze Phenom support in to a 4MB chipQuote:

Based in this I can confirm that setting CPU multi in bios dont make any difference in performance, the only advantage is for show off an Phenom @ 3xxx Mhz :rofl:

- EPP memory option can be set in bios, Gskill modules was recognized and set @ High performance.
- HTT 5 in ntune also make BSODs in my system, I couldn't end any 3D benchmark.
I notice another bug in this bios, not only the HTT multi is not working but HTT link speed is set @ 8-8 and not @ 16 -16, can be see it in AOD 2.0.0.9.

There is no 3D benchies because the bios bug scores to low.
Unless ASUS bios team work in a good bios for Phemon or some of the Bios Masters here in XS can help us, we SLI users are in deep trouble using Phenom CPUs.

aGeoM, what version of overdrive are you using?
I have got 2.10 and it will only work on a 790 chipset based motherboard.
You have a good overclock there for an AM2, i get bsods at 230HTT. It's not the chip either as it's still on stock volts @2.5+ghz.
Also I can't use ntune on this board, it simply won't work, it doesn't lockup at all just when you hit apply it does nothing.
ps I just noticed you have 2.0.0.9 version of AOD.

That 1M is about right for those MHz. :) Same with wPrime which is +1s quicker in Vista over XP. But your AOD is vey buggy there.
I am starting to feel game to do some oc'ing i have msi K9A2-cf-f (790x) with bios 1.1 i have ht multi of 13 in bios but i would much prefer to have so decent cooling via air before i try anything any suggestions ? (currently with stock cooler with AS5
